Any and all STL Files for this project are now available for download on my website! I also apologize for the Anakin quote. It was something of a running joke at work, because hey, how often do things actually work perfectly on the first try? I'm big on movie quotes, so... yeah. You'll come across one frequently. Even bad ones.I'm also so sorry about the audio issues. It's far too late now to do anything about it, and I certainly understand all your frustration, but I sure appreciate your sticking with me on this one.
i have the exact same monitor from a HP here. Just wondering why not leave the TFT enclosed in its original black housing. This way the hinges can be reused and its better protected for cleaning the front side.
The man put in his time and effort to provide this information. You didn't pay anything for it, so don't complain about the content. Great work Mike, and thank you. Please keep it up!
Zamma123 Here's a more straight forward and easy to follow tutorial that this video looks like it was based off of: ruclips.net/video/CfirQC99xPc/видео.html
"You can see that building an external monitor is really as simple as buying a controller and plugging it in...... as smart as this video is Mike, I think that this build is slightly more difficult than plugging a controller in. awesome build by the way
it actually is that simple. You kinda just need to know what to buy. What was kinda of glossed over in this video was getting the right power connector and power supply. I had a lcd monitor and controller sitting on my desk for a few weeks because I didn't have the right charger. Got one now, tho
Depending on the laptop you use for this you can sometimes reuse all or part of the original screen casing/frame(i don't know what it's called). It probably won't fit the controller but considering you have to build something anyway, modifying it can be easier.
I'm only half way through the video and your portable secondary screen looks incredibly similar to a pc monitor! Good thing you had all those fancy tools to save you from having to buy another monitor!
Appearance:neat old school suite and hair (and face). Articulation:loud and clear. Video duration: not that long, ample. Sense of humor: enjoyable. Content value added:confirmed, inspirative. Instruction step by step: sufficiently detailed. Like:yes. Subscribe:yes.
I took this exact laptop apart yesterday with the intention to make an external monitor of it and have now been recommended this video. HOW DO YOU KNOW RUclips
That's actually a really good design, I've been sitting here for 5 minutes trying to work out how I was going to build mine, this is a really versatile and best of all portable design. I'll be hopefully using a small step up converter so I can run mine off a 2a usb plug though. Thanks for the inspiration
I just thought about this and was sure that someone had already done it. Thanks Mike for be the pioneer for me. 😎 I have loads of dead laptops that I will use to do this too.
I have seen at least 3 other videos about making a portable monitor from old laptops and I have to say your build is the cleanest and best looking. I have one old laptop which I can actually use to make a portable monitor but the process is too complicated.
Most downvotes probably are a response to having to quickly lower the audio volume when "it's working, it's working" tears up the speakers. That being said, thanks for the video.
Thanks to your channel, I solved a problem where LCD controller board (ext. monitor) and laptop have their own power supply. So, I branched my laptop's adapter cable, one line to laptop (19 V), while the other one to external monitor using step-down XL4015 CC/CV (12V-1A). Previously, I used LM2596 (CV), but the module exploded due to overheat. It's my first time did some project like this.
2:20 Jeeeeeeeeez you woke up the dead. Nice video by the way. I've made something similar but I don't have these many views. mine is powered by USB type C, and another one can be powered by both type c and 12V. Also, they have room to store the cables.
not sure if mike will see this, but i would LOVE a google doc for the 3D models he used to accomplish this, especially the corner clamps and standoffs. been wanting to do a project like this with 3 old laptops, and being able to duplicate the process this easily would make it go by so much easier/smoother.
Hi! I looked all over my computer and I cannot find the files anywhere. It looks like I got rid of them, which is so unlike me, and it's now got me worried what else is missing... Sorry, but thanks for watching!
Very good video showing how to reuse that hp monitor. I do have same hp laptop and I don't use it cause is too old. You gave me great ideas. Thank you.
I have an entire 3d printer, just wish I knew how to use CAD. I'm getting a few IPS laptop displays and I'm planning on using one to make an external display .
what if you just took the keyboard off then just sandwich the two pieces together. You will still have access to the USB ports power ports and headphone port. If you did a wireless connection between your main setup and the now sandwiched laptop, all you need to make is a stand for the laptop.
Hi, I've seen similar videos in which they use Step UP modules. I still don't understand what would be the difference of using one or the other. Great video as usual. :)
Transparency adds to the LCDs true image quality. Good monitor choice. If you sell an A.K. Post link. I'm trying to add my Deloreans Plutonium using windows 10 to a first gen Xbox console shell.

Hi.after seeing your videos I got an idea of making android TV from broken android device and connecting it to DIY laptop screen.
i have the exact same monitor from a HP here. Just wondering why not leave the TFT enclosed in its original black housing. This way the hinges can be reused and its better protected for cleaning the front side.
Sir , i have one doubt for that how can i ping you

Hey Jack! How about that?! Have you seen the movie "The Social Dilemma"? RUclips knows everything about us.
I’m so glad I saved all the components of my laptops, now let’s get to thinking along with this video to help :)
That's actually a really good design, I've been sitting here for 5 minutes trying to work out how I was going to build mine, this is a really versatile and best of all portable design. Hmm a USB step up to 12v sounds nice. So I can power it up via my desktop computer, via a USB charger, or via a USB power bank.
I'm impressed, a very clean and good job.

Thanks! I did go to a bit of extra trouble to make it look as nice as I could. I still use it as my teleprompter screen.
Thanks for the tips. Just salvaged my old HP screen tonight and found your video! This will be helpful

“ oh and for the heck of it, i also installed a quadcore multisonic triptomonitor for holographic imaging technology” cool!
Wow my model was 01,& your model 02.what a co-incidence
Sound and video came out from 90's.

why my first thought this is video from 90' advertisement or something
LOL, me too. He seems out of one of those 90's infomercials
It does but I love it

Thanks dude, this is what I needed to know. I'm going to put a desktop inside a briefcase and had a few laptop screens lying around.

"Im saving disk platters so I can build a telescope or a death ray"
Subscribed. Only wanted to figure out how to reuse my laptop screen, but this was more than I expected.
Good job bro. I have an old lab top at the house that I couldn't see myself throwing out. (I'm very frugal) thanks for the hard work.
Absolutely awesome Job Sheldon (Cooper). Looking forward to your death ray tutorial ;-)
Great ideia, and your presentation was straight to the point.
that's awesome! I'be been meaning to try this project out for my work laptop.
Very good video showing how to reuse that hp monitor. I do have same hp laptop and I don't use it cause is too old. You gave me great ideas.
Thank you.
Mike, this is excellent and I look forward to building one of these. The parts acquisition was what I was missing.
Thanks for video, is truly a good starting guide for me with my plan of building a smart mirror .
you are a born innovator.
Gonna give this a try, I will update when I do so.
Thanks Mike! I appreciate the method and the insight, looks great!
Good luck on the death-ray.
3:49 Never forget Murphy's Fourth Law. 'When you make something idiot proof, they will make a better Idiot'.
yeah, nothing is idiot proof. hell i'd manage to somehow build a nuclear reactor and blow myself up somehow...
This man was the last person to ever be seen inside a radio shack in 2017
This feels like something from the early 2000s to 1990s
You got to be kidding...
That's exactly my laptop!!!
Seems like one need to have whole factory ! To build this

From the Sir G display to the keyboard, you can find long wires to connect the display and keyboard

Some things so confusing i wish they would make these but no i dont think they ever will.
Nice work!
you could also have used the original shell of the monitor
Not sure if it's intentional, but the video style is quite retro, funny though.
I died from the intro.
Brilliant idea. You made a breat job. :)
wow..so easy!
That low profile stand is better then apple istand.😅🤣
Tell me more about this telescope from HDD platters...
