Thank you for watching this video! If you enjoyed it, likes, comments, shares, subs etc. are greatly appreciated! What are your thoughts on Sonic 3D Blast/Flickies' Island? Do you prefer the 16-bit or 32-bit version? What Sonic games would you like to see me cover next? I'm thinking of making my way through ALL the non-mainline ones. Thanks again for watching!

The hilarious voice crying "SEGA!" came from Sega's aggressive 90s marketing in the USA. Most American commercials for Sega games or hardware ended with that clip between 1993 and about 1997 or so.
I remember playing this in NYC on an in-store Saturn -- and being mindblown by the fully 3D special stages, replete with a tune that goes hard as a worthy successor to the Sonic 2 special stage tune. It was like a fleeting glimpse into the Sonic that could've been, but alas this game was a harbinger for the late 90s Sonic Winter.

Used to play the Saturn Sonic 3D blast a lot back in the day.
I started playing the megadrive version a few years ago because it's a lot easier find a way to play.
    Still really like it.
    It's very playable.
I like to imagine that it's the real sonic extreme by playing that soundtrack over it. Great times!

It might not be an official sonic game, but I highly recommend Sonic 3D in 2D which is basically this game but plays more like a normal 16-bit era sonic title and also serves as a nice bridge between the two main eras of the series!

That SEGA shout, every time I played this back in the day I always thought it kinda sounded like Homer Simpson.
I wasn’t a big fan of this and yes to me it was complicated but thought it was visually impressive.

I got this for Christmas as a kid. I was totally blown away by the graphics at the time. Soon though, the shine wore off and monotony of the game play set in. I always thought the controls were soapy which lead to frustrating platforming. I still love the music and there is room in my heart for 3D Blast even if it isn’t my favorite from the Sega/MD era.

When I get back there Sonic 3D Flikies Island, it just blew me up. The Graphic was top and the music was great. Especially Rusty Ruin, Diamond Dust, Volcano Valley AND Panic Puppet Act 2. Strangely, I could go to the gameplay very easy, although the red birds were sometimes hard to catch. About the Saturn/PC version, I would say, they´re ok. Also for me the ultimate version, is, thanks to the mod of the original main programmer Jon Burton, Sonic 3D: Director´s Cut. I would never say, Sonic 3D is the best Sonic game out there but:
    1. It´s in my eyes better than it reputation
    2. The Game shows one last time, what a powerhouse the Mega Drive was.
    3. It was the first good step for Sonic, to enter the 3D-Era.

The MUSIC on the Mega drive version, oh my freaking god! Rusty Ruins starting out with that ethereal verse, transitioning into those woozy arpeggios and then back again. Then you have the Act 2 version which is like the 'crystal' version of it. God damn.
Then you have Diamond Dust which has one of the most beautiful choruses ever put into a Mega Drive game. When people say the MD soundchip sucks I show them this, because the amount of layers going on and just expert use of the soundchip is just unmatched.
But I think my heart unfortunately goes out to Volcano Valley Zone. As someone who absolutely fucking loves the TREASURE games, I cannot get over the heart pounding use of drumming, dread inducing bass and metallic melodies.
Then the crescendo of probably one of the best "I'm literally floating" melodies I've ever had the joy of hearing.
Sorry, I know that was a rant, but this OST does not even get even CLOSE enough the love it deserves.
The game has 5 composers and it shows.
Honestly on the Mega drive the only OST that comes close to probably Rocket Knight Adventures or Sonic 3.

    • @HillTopTerebi

The way you are able to talk about these soundtracks is brilliant. I really enjoyed your Spinball comment but couldn't find it when I looked to reply to it! I wish I was as eloquent when talking about the music. It's definitely my weakest part in these videos (probably because I have listened to almost nothing but punk my whole life) but yeah - the layering in this soundtrack is masterfully done! Volcano Valley is an absolute banger. Thanks as always for watching! I always enjoy reading your thoughts on these games. Cheers!!

@@HillTopTerebi Honestly it's mostly because I'm super fucking defensive of the MegaDrive soundchip.
As someone who has been in the retro community for so many years, I've noticed that there's a strange bias towards calling MD music 'shitty fart sounds' which don't get me wrong, that's the fault of a few games. But if we judged the entire soundchip on a few shit soundtracks, then the SNES would be in the same camp.
I guess my bias is that I listen to a lot of heavier/more raw recorded music (RIP Steve Albini) and the MD is filled with a ton of teeth grinding synth goodness.
I mean, have you heard Flood of Power from the Midnight Resistance soundtrack? Whoever heard that and says the MD chip sucks is a liar.
Keep making videos and I'll keep watching and commenting hahaha

When this game came out, I was blown away by the look of the game, I had a lot of fun playing it and I still have fun today. I prefer the Mega Drive version, both in terms of visuals and the soundtrack. I bought the Saturn version years later and I love the Rusty Ruin Zone music. And why the purple Flickie change color in the volcano stage?
Also years later I noticed that in the game Metropolis Street Racer, the song "It Doesn't Really Matter" has some vibes from the song Green Grove Zone act1 version of the Sega Saturn.

I had this game on PC (based off the Saturn version) and loved playing it. For nostalgia reasons, I prefer the Saturn version soundtrack, especially the Rusty Ruins zone music. It was a bit of a shock when I played the game on a Sonic collection disc and it was a different soundtrack. I didn't realise at the time that the game had been released on different consoles. The PC version had similar half-pipe special stages to the Saturn version but the graphics were unfortunately massively downgraded in comparison.

Awesome! Watching this while building a new Arcade1up cabinet I got with a beer!
You know, even though its not the greatest sonic game out there, I'm hugely nostalgic for it, and like you, I had it when it launched. Agree with you completely, the controls are mainly the main frustration with the game.
However, I actually think the soundtrack is criminally underrated, with more people preferring the Saturn version, I too prefer the Megadrive version. After all, it uses the S3&K soundfont, and anything that reminds me of the GOAT is a win in my books. I actually do make my own Megadrive music, but I dont have any of it on YT, maybe one day?. Funny thing, I used to be able to activate Level select almost all the time by simply nudging my cartridge when I powered it on lol. And yes, I found it out by pure accident! Love the videos man, there so nostalgic to me because your perspective as a Sonic Fan in the 90s in the UK is something I share! "I was there man..." Miss the days of running down to Dillons or a One Stop (remember those stores?) for my next Sonic the Comic lol. Take it easy man

And I've just got a Golden Tee XL, mainly because with the trackball, I'm tempted to make it a SegaSonic cab in the future! And man I hear ya, I've got a Street Fighter 2 cab as well, but the Capcom Legacy version (the black and Yellow cab) I've added a subwoofer inside, extra speakers on the panel below the control deck, and a Sega logo in between them cuz....ah sega made arcade machines so why not ;)
Ps. Jealous of the Time crisis cab ;) always wanted that, and wished they would release a Daytona USA cab and I'd be all over it haha

I wish we got more of the Sega ones in the UK. Time Crisis is great btw - even though a bigger screen would have been better!

@@HillTopTerebi Thanks man :) I was quite surprised by the reception it got. Even though it's more Sonic CD esk in Sonic Overdrive, I do actually make more Megadrive stuff but never release them. It's the reception of Overdrive is why I'm considering posting my Megadrive tracks. I like to create original tracks, as well as recreations of Sonic tracks, that have added compositions in them, making them longer, as if they are some newly discovered prototype haha (at least, in my head). You'll see on Demigod Studios channel (when he posts the OST videos) I'm linked directly in his description, and I'm down as AniFae_Kusanagi_ in the game credits. Hope you like what you hear anyway, especially the theme for Never Lake. Also, I have planned to learn how to use GameMaker Studio, as I'd love to make my own 2D sonic game. I've a few ideas cooking, such as turning all the 2 player Zones from Sonic 3 into a full game, with Act 2 remixes and added zones. Think it would be cool to do :)
Haha man if I do I'll sure make some kinda video, but I don't think that'll be in the works anytime soon, but we'll see ;)
Yeah same, I know they did Outrun but we never got that cab, and it was a Gen 1 cab anyway. Is the screen in the Time Crisis the BOE monitor? I'm not sure if I've seen people put a 19 inch in them. Might be worth looking into? I know with this golden Tee xl, it doesnt have a BOE monitor sadly, so has not very good viewing angles, but it is a 19 inch. However I've seen videos on changing the monitor out, and its soo easy from the looks of it. Got your eye on any more cabs? Thanks for chatting with me Hilltop!

Im sorry but you are actually incorrect Sonic 3D blast was not made by Sonic team or any of the in-house Sega developers it was only by travelers tales
And another thing the only reason why the game exists was because this was originally supposed to be the concept for Sonic 3 when the Japanese team was working on it it was supposed to be an isometric game but it required certain chips to be included that would have been more expensive than the actual game itself
So Sega decided to give the concept to travelers tales because of their success with games like toy story which was the game that got sega's attention because of how they were able to replicate 3D-like visuals on the Genesis so Sega gave the license to Sonic to travelers tales based off that concept and that's how
    3D blast was born
    And also final note
More proof that Sonic team didn't work on this game?
Sonic team was working on a bunch of other games that weren't Sonic related one of the most well-known games from that time period was nights into dreams
I hope that clarified a few things
