What a wonderful, thoughtful and nostalgic video! My very first Sonic game was Sonic 2... and almost everything you said in your video paralleled my experience: playing Mario at a friend's house but not feeling the need to get it... later seeing Sonic at a friend's house and being blown away... being unable to contain myself as I looked for a Sega Genesis under the Christmas tree... and then, of course, making my way through the levels one by one and studying everything about the game as I went, from the character designs to the instruction manual. I'm still playing Sonic to this day and, like the title of your video says, it's a game that changed my life. 🙂 Thank you for your loving tribute!
Awesome stuff! Love Nostalgic stories like this! When I was a kid, my older sister had a Mastersystem, which I ended up inheriting as she wasnt interested in it. But like you, I dabbled in gaming rather than had a passion for it at that time. In 1990, I recieved an early Mk1 Megadrive (with the High Definition Stereo Sound writing along the top), which was a bundle with Altered Beast, and i got Batman from my uncle. My mother considered Altered Beast too scary for me. (seriously, I even caught my parents and friends playing on it when I came down for a drink late one night...felt so unfair at the time.) One day in 1991, I was at a friends house and like you, he had Sonic The Hedgehog. I couldnt believe what I was seeing. I wanted to be as cool as that hedgehog, and that's the moment my passion began. I became a sonic fanatic, and I remember all those "Sonic the hedgehog With Attitude" stuff. I even still have the Black chequered bed spread that has sonic reaching up with a starry night behind him. I also remember having some Sonic the Hedgehog trainers, which I used in sports day at school, because I BELIEVED they made me run faster! I'm happy to report that I still own my original megadrive (and the mastersystem I got given), and it gets used every single week, of every single year I've owned it. And, I've even told my family, that the day I die, my Megadrive is getting buried with me! 😂😂😂 As for what you said about Robotnik, I thought he had eyes on his belly too! AND, you know how an animal pops out when you destroy a badnik? Well I used to think the white seal were Casper the friendly Ghosts....🤦♂️😂 Love the videos as usual! 😃👍🍺🍺🍺🍺
Sorry for my slow reply on this. I continue to believe we are more or less the same person haha. I know the bed spread and trainers you refer to, as I also had them. I'm impressed you still have the bed spread. I don't know what happened to mine. It got thrown out I guess - not by me though!! Hahaha so I'm not the only person who thought those were eyes on Robotnik's waist!!! Thank you for watching as always!
I bought a Sega Megadrive just to try this game out after reading computer mag reviews. I loved it, the speed, the loop the loops, the way the rings explode everywhere etc. Sonic quickly became part of my life for several years afterwards.
I didn't discover Sonic until I was a kid in the early 2010s. I discovered the original trilogy + Spinball on an old Genesis at my grandmothers house, and loved them. They were my first video games I'd ever played and it was a fun experience. It wouldn't take too long for me to discover that there was more to the Sonic universe than Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Doctor Robotnik (which the Wii Shop Channel also called "Doctor Eggman" for some reason). I guess my Sonic obsession was pretty obvious, and once I got my Wii, I was able to play Colors, Unleashed, Sonic 3 & Knuckles, the Master System games, and my favorite of them all, Black Knight. My father also got an Xbox 360, and that allowed me to get Generations and the Adventure games too. I guess my Sonic addiction was inevitable with that perfect storm of games blasting my mind.
My first experience was after the parents of my dad saw a commercial with me for the so called Magnum Set incl. Sonic 1 and Mega Games I. After the commrcial, when they saw stars in my eyes, they only said : "Son, we don´t know what this is, we don´t know how much it costs but go to a shop with this thing and buy it. We will pay the price". On the same evening I got my Mega Drive, which works till today on my TV. On the first evining, I could play til 3 in the morning. Sadly my grandparents passed away a few years ago. But if my Mega Drive will ever break in 100 pieces, I´ll keep them as a priceless treasure till the day I die, because of this wonderful memories and as a honor to my beloved grandparents.
Dang i cant believe you beat sonic 1 as a kid. As a kid i grew up with sa2b and the mega collection and i never made it past marble zone, while i could beat all of sa2b
To be fair, playing Sonic 1 was basically all I did outside of school haha. I was extremely dedicated to beating it! I would have been 7 when I beat it for the first time I reckon. I'm impresses you beat SA2B as a kid. That last stage where you play as everyone can be pretty brutal! Nice one!
I love hearing retrospective of games like this from people who experienced the release of the now iconic games first hand. Thank you for the great video 👍👍👍
My very first experience playing Sonic was in 1992. I was at my dad's apartment and his roommate had a Genesis with Sonic 1. As soon as I started playing, it was all I did that weekend. Fast forward to 1994 and my dad bought us kids our own genesis bundled with Sonic 2, and it was all downhill from there...then up into the stratosphere ofc lol!
My introduction to Sonic was at my friend's birthday party. It was time to leave, so I went up to his room to say bye and found a group of kids watching him playing Sonic 1. It was the first Robotnik battle, and I remember finding it incredibly exciting, and also a little bit frightening. I ended up getting a Master System that Christmas I think, and my brother got the mega drive. I don't think I really got to play much of sonic 1 until much later because we owned the second game first
Thank you! I think I'll definitely do one for Sonic 2 in this style. I have stories like this right up to Sonic '06 (probably up to Frontiers actually!) so I may do a few of these. Thank you for watching!
This was a great video! I really enjoyed listening to your history with the series. Sonic 1 was the first game I played at about 5! I could not beat Labyrinth Zone for the longest time as the drowning theme made me cry and turn the game off.
This was a fun listen. I wish I could remember my first experiences with Sonic that well. I was born in mid 90's and we had a Sega Mega Drive that was handed down from my aunt. We had Sonic 1, 2 and Knuckles. I remember looking at the pictures of Sonic 3 on the back of the box of S&K and dreaming about it. The console broke before I was old enough to get any good at the games. I re-discovered the games much later when I found Sonic Mega Collection Plus for the PS2 at a local Hypermarket. That's when I was finally able to play Sonic 3 also. It did not disappoint!
less of a "what did i think robotnik was" but since my first sonic game was adventure 2 battle, i had what i thought was a pretty firm idea on what eggman was, so playing the first 3 games on mega collection plus i was like "who is this robotnik person and where is eggman"
I am actually a relatively recent fan. I got into it like... shortly before the second movie came out? Okay, so I watched the first movie with my mom. I didn't expect much from it, I wasn't a fan at the time and I still had that horrible first trailer in my mind. But it was a pretty fun time, me and my mom enjoyed it (she particularly loved the "I'm wet, I'm cold, there's a fish on my head" line, haha). So a few months before the movie released, I also noticed that one of my friends was a fan of the franchise and both me and my mom were preparing to watch the sequel in theaters. And I thought "Eh, I might as well try out some games when I'll have the money". So when I had the chance, I bought Sonic Adventure. I think it was because it was seen as an imperfect, but still good game, so I figured it would give me an idea of what an average good Sonic game is like. And at first it confused me and I wasn't sure what to make of it. I had fun, mostly, but there were parts that frustrated me (Big... I am better at his gameplay now, but I still don't like it). However, despite the game being somewhat dated, even despite how somewhat goofy the cutscenes were, I couldn't help but find the story and characters fun and charming. Like, I loved Tails' and Amy's arcs, I actually thought Big's story was also oddly fun despite how much I hated his gameplay and I absolutely loved Gamma's story. And I also enjoyed the stuff with Tikal, Chaos and echidna tribe, I thought it was really interesting... And so, I finished the entire game. All 6 stories. And honestly? I don't care if I have to go through Big's story again, I'll gladly go through it again, I have already done so at least two times. The final boss and the ending were so worth it... Okay, so, slight detour - obviously, the Sonic movie wasn't the first time I heard of the franchise. It was always there, following me around. After all, Sonic is a hugely popular character. Similarly to, say, Bugs Bunny, even if you've never watched any Bugs Bunny cartoons, it's very likely you have seen him before SOMEWHERE. As a kid, I loved playing Flash (rip) games and I also loved games that let you be creative - make your own stories, characters, etc. So, I stumbled upon this game called Sonic Scene Maker or something like that and even though I didn't know many of the characters, I still loved making my own dumb stories in it (I went the Crash Bandicoot route, where Sonic was a genetic experiment created by Eggman who rebelled against him, and also, I did correctly guess that Amy had a crush on Sonic, hah). And what was the song that played on title screen? I didn't know it at the time, but it was a remix of Open Your Heart. So when I got to the Perfect Chaos boss as an adult and heard the song, I got quite the whiplash. I think I skipped the intro and I wasn't fan of how loud the song was on the selection screen, so I didn't listen to it much beforehand. As it turned out, I had more of a nostalgic connection with Sonic than I thought, hah. Another side note, when I was a kid, I stumbled upon the infamous "Elise kisses Sonic" scene, but I didn't think much of it. I couldn't speak English at the time, but I seeing Sonic dead and the fact that everyone, including Eggman, were so torn up about it, tugged at my heartstrings somewhat, so, y'know, do with that what you will. I think that's actually what helped me figure out that Amy had a crush on Sonic, as she seemed the most upset out of everyone. Also, when the friend who was already a fan asked me what my favorite Sonic character was before I played the game, I answered "Knuckles". Somewhat randomly, I didn't know enough about Knuckles at the time, actually, but he seemed cool. After I got to know about him and his personality - that he is this last descendant of a dead clan who is super stoic and serious compared to Sonic, but also a bit gullible due to his social isolation and strong sense of honor, and also has a bit of a temper - I started loving him even more, so even though the choice was kinda random at first, Knux is still my favorite character. I was SOOOO happy when I finally got to see him on the big screen, hah.
My best friend had a Sega and he introduced me to the blue blur. (He also introduced me to other classics such as: Rocket Knight Adventures, Mickey Mouse World of Illuison, and Ristar!) He was far superior to the game play then I was. I had no issue watching him play. It was fun! I didn’t get my own Sega until the summer of ‘93. I did have a Game Gear though which I sucked at! Hehehe. I remember when I got the Game Gear. It came with Sonic 2. I couldn’t get past that damned claw. So I asked my Dad for help. He couldn’t beat it either. He was totally furious and baffled that a game that hard could be released for kids. When I was teenager, I finally showed that claw who was boss. The summer of ‘99 I finally sat down and beat Sonic 1,2, 3&K, all the Chaos Emeralds, without the use of the Game Genie or in game cheat codes. I had arrived. Sonic has always been a part of my life. I’m almost 40 and I still play the classics with just as much joy as I did when I was kid. It keeps me young and is my Time Machine when I need to turn the world off for a bit.
My first experience with Sonic was: I guess, playing the demos of Sonic Lost World, Sonic & All-Stars Transformed & Sonic Boom: Rise Of Lyric on my Wii U, but my love of Sonic began with the second trailer to the first Sonic Movie. After that, I instantly became a fan of the franchise. And I still am to this day. Currently, I'm anticipating the release of Sonic Origins Plus, Sonic Prime Season 2, the Knuckles spinoff series, Sonic Superstars, the rest of the Sonic Frontiers updates, & Sonic Movie 3, Alongside some other stuff.
Awesome to hear from someone who got into Sonic more recently (I guess Lost World was a while ago but when you're my age... they feel recent 😅). Glad you joined the Sonic fanbase! So much good stuff is coming our way! Thank you for watching!
Thank you! Arrrrgh what a shame. I put so much work into this and missed that blooper. Maybe I can crop it to just show the Scrap Brain bit. I think the audio will work okay. The scanlines are missing from the GHZ and LZ bits too. Argh!!!! Haha thank you for letting me know. So frustrating. Thank you for watching!
My first experience with Sonic was my cousin trying to show it to me on his Sega Genesis and me saying that I wanted to play Batman. Hello! I'm 38 so I've got a few years on you. Sounds like you had quite a wait for S3&K but glad you got to it in the end. Haha well I am revisiting all of AoStH at the moment and have fairly enjoyed it so far so who knows... maybe I'll join the AoStH appreciation side? At the footage of the PAL Mega Drive, the credit gets overlapped by the footage itself. but good still video!

Old Fart Club FTW 🤘
We have boxing day in Canada as well.

I beat somic 2 as a kid on the game gear.
