Hi Dave, Here is what Rebel T3i for Dummies says about Metering timer. pg. 104 Metering Timer: By default, exposure information such as f-stop and shutter speed disappears from the display after 16 seconds if you don't press any camera buttons If you want the exposure data to remain visible for a longer period, you can adjust the shutdown time, but only if you shoot in the following exposure modes: . P, Tv, Av, M, orA-DEP exposure modes: Look for the Metering Timer option on Shooting Menu 4. . Movie mode: The option lives on Movie Menu 2. You can set the timer to values ranging from 4 seconds to 30 minutes Just keep in mind that the metering mechanism uses battery power, so the shorter the cutoff time, the better. pg.129 1_ Metering Timer. This option is the one that adjusts the auto shutoff timing of the exposure meter, as explained in the earlier section "Customizing the Live View display." By default the meter shuts down and disappears from the display after 16 seconds. Regards, Ken
I'd personally like to take the time to thank you for uploading these videos and responding to some of the questions posted by other youtube users, it's helped so much. Thank you!
Thanks, this is helpful. I would love a tutorial on the best settings to make a portrait video (i.e. a youtube video with a person talking to the camera). I have not been able to find a specific tutorial on this and I think many new youtubers would find it helpful
Me too! Seems to me that the college went over what they thought was important,, just the very basics. To me all is important considering the wide variety of things you may be trying to accomplish. Tnx a lot!
My husband has just bought me a T3i as a surprise gift and your videos have been fantastic, thank you. We both went out taking pictures today and he was really impressed at how much I knew. I must say, for an entry level DSLR it is a great camera with amazing functionality.
Saw your first video the other day, didn't get to the second & third, but decided this was the camera I wanted. Thanks for the help deciding...bought it today & LOVE it! I had the Rebel Xti and the Rebel 35mm until they were stolen. Great videos and they are very helpful! By watching all of them this evening, my camera is all setup & good to go!
Bought this as my first DSLR to play around with videoing. Thanks for the in depth tutorial. I understand a lot more and for the things i still dont understand, I will just follow your lead in settings lol.
I brought the 600d thinking you could zoom in and out like a normal video camera lol, was a little dissapointed but after watching over this vid a few times manual zoom and focus will be good. thanks for the uploads.
@Back Eddy .....When you are using your T3i, if you use your dial and put your dial on M, for manual, you will see more menu tabs. If you keep it in A, auto err, you won't see them.
I lovedddd this! It was simple but not too dumbed down. I’m a complete beginner and I’m doing a lot of video recording for a vlog, mostly just in the house. Any advice on settings??
The best and most cost efficient lens for video is the 50mm 1.8. It gives you great depth of field for that filmic look and the image quality is absolutely stunning for the price. You can pick one up for like £80 I believe. Or you could also do what I do, which is a bit pricier £170 odd for the lens, and use the Nikkor 35mm f 1.8 with a Nikkor to EOS converter (£20). Or if you don't like the plastic feel of the Canon 50mm, get the nikon one for roughly the same price, again with a converter!
10:50 The metering timer sets how long the light meter will stay on after pressing the focus button.( The focus button is the one you half press, not sure what its really called)
Phew, this is camera is not as user friendly for me. But this is the best the tutorial I've seen and I thank you. Only into the first 7 minutes and still got a lot to learn I feel.
Great instructional video - but if you have the latest version of the T3i software, the screen settings are different and harder to follow along. So if you have the latest version of the camera OS, you need to be prepared to pause this video a lot in order to figure out the differences.
I just bought the 600D and i am interested in any video lessons on how to use it especially the different features. Which video tutorial out there would be the best to buy.
Thanks for this, very informative, I like the fact that you explain why you use the settings you do. A little picky of me but, you kept saying NTCS instead of NTSC.
Thanks so much for the vids... they helped a lot. Only thing I have to add is an audio tip. When you're recording a video, you should NOT rely/trust the camera's audio levels. When filming a vid, you should ALWAYS use headphones or ear buds. I know people that have shot films/documentaries and trusted the camera's audio levels and when they go to post production they had super quiet audio. Don't trust audio levels and always wear headphones!
Hey how you doing? Thank you so much for your videos I just got my T3i few days back & m learning how to use it. Was a bit confused with the lens as I got a 18-55mm lens with the aperture of 3.5 . Didnt know that it couldn't get to 2.8 which is much more brighter. Any ways got my doubts cleard from canon itself. You are doing an awesome job with the 3 videos uploaded have watched them like 10 times now. Have you uploaded any video on the 18-55mm lens would love to hear from you on it. Thank you
wow wow i just went through all parts n i feel like i know all i wanted to know about a 600D thanks a lot buddy u doing a really good job ill be grateful if u can tell me more about canon 1200D
Just a suggestion...I struggled with the first part of this video because I didn't realize the Movie exposure had to be on Manual and mine was set for Auto. I checked my manual and that's when I figured it out. Other than that, I've really enjoyed your tutorials and I've liked your FB page and am now a subscriber.
Thank you very much for the wonderful 3 parts tutorial on the 600D. I recently used the 600D camera to record training videos. For some reason the recording comes out with a background noise, kind of a hissing sound which is quite disturbing. Is this typical of this camera ? Is this something that you are familiar with or experienced ? Is there anything that can be done, like changing configuration, to reduce that noise ? I tested the sound with an external mic unfortunately the noise is even more prominent with the mic. I don't know what camera you're using for the tutorial but the sound is excellent. Thanks, Michelle
Hi thanks for the video... I bought this camera and I will be doing RUclips makeup videos while sitting infront of a bright window... Can you please tell me what my ISO and shutter settings should be on because I can't seem to get a good one. Thank you
There's actually a menu option that allows for Auto Focusing while recording, but once you enable it you still have to half depress the capture button like you would for focusing in on a picture.
Great work...! Just a thought...You by pass a few of the menu settings only saying..."I have it set on this one..." It'd be great if you could do a video, not only explaining WHAT all the menu settings do, but, perhaps, even SHOWING what they do. In other words, if you would take the time to experiment and allow us to see what happens in certain settings, etc... Just a thought..but..thanks!
I'm watching a lot of your videos because they're so informative. I appreciate that you keep the volume on your introduction low enough that it doesn't blast me away while I have my headphones on. Some of the trolls who read this will increase their audio just for the startle value, but when they do - that's the last of their videos I watch. lol Near the end of a long video your voice gets so low in volume that I have to increase my computer volume and the youtube volume to the maximum. I tend to talk with a lower volume, too after I've been talking more than about 10 minutes. Keep p the good work.
When you half-press the shutter while framing a shot, it turns on the light meter in the camera. The meter will then stay active for 16 seconds, and shut off if you don't take the shot within that time. It is a battery saving setting... the meter uses battery power, although not much.
Thanks So Much for these videos!! Upgrading from a Canon SX20 after messing with manual settings on it and seeing your videos 1st thought...EEEEEEK?!?! But your videos made me think...Ok..I might "got this"...Thanks!
It will depend on what software you are using. By software (if you are a windows user) I recommend Sony Vegas Or Adobe Premier Pro. If you have a video editing software you can edit whatever you want and then render it to an appropriate file size. To do this, let's say you are using Windows Movie Maker, click on File > Publish > and then save as a movie. If you are using Sony Vegas, click file, render as, and it'll give you options such as wmv, avi and then youre done. 1min1080HD wmv = >50mb
How to do exposure compansation in video? I could figure it out for photography but not inside of the video mode! Would be extremly helpfull! Nice vid helped me already :)
Hey thank you for replying can you please tell me how I can set up my camera to focus on the object I'm holding in my hand then back on myself again. For example: I want the viewers to be able to see the writing on the product I'm holding then when I remove the product I want it to focus back on my face without stopping every minute to Manually focus it. I hope I made sense again lol thanks a bunch
Nice videos, congrats! How can one find info about a MOV file after the shoot is finished? I mean, I'd like to know how was the f-stop, ISO, etc from a shoot. The info options from the Finder/Mac and from the FCP X didnt work. Tks!
really helpful, I do have a question I do eye makeup tutorials so if I want to zoom and I use the zoom buttons and then manually fix the lens when I press record will I be able to see myself zoomed in the view finder so I can see what im doing.?
I will like for you to cover how to do continuous shooting with the CanonT3I. Because when I start shooting, the camera will shoot for a few seconds, then the 'Auto Stop' will stop recording. Also cover how to use the "Zoom In and Zoom out functions.
This was a very useful series of videos. I've had this camera since it came out in 2011, but I haven't used it in a couple of years. I'm trying to use it for shooting some videos, and I know it can be done. I think I'm almost there. In this video, though, when you went through the menu settings, you didn't explain at all what the AF Modes or the AF/AE lock do. You only showed which one you were set on then moved on. Those are definitely not self explanatory.
My friend, what is the difference between the t3i and the 60D? I think the 60D is a bit better but it seems to me they are about the same. I am of course talking about the video format.
Hi thanks for a great tutorial! I have a question regarding the video settings. See, I have turned off video snapshot, where you can chose recording for 4 secs, 8 secs etc. Still the camera will only record 4 seconds and then it automatically stops.. What could be the problem??

@Haly Gross You mentioned low light photography. Yes. With the proper settings, it's fine. I shoot in just candle light and no problem. But again, remember, you must have the proper settings. And you will have noise(grainy look) if you try to blow up your pics because sometimes, the pixels are fine in a smaller pic but when you try to stretch the pixels, you will get poor image quality.
Could you mention all the items that were supposed to come with your Canon Rebel T3i? I got one a few months ago, but I'm not sure I got everything I was supposed to get.
hi david, nice to meet you and i watch your video and i learned a lot.. and i just want to ask because, i have a canon kiss x5 and have a flash 430exii.. and i just want o ask you and teach me witch is much better i will to have a nice shot..thank you so much i do appriciate that i learn from you as a lot...Godbless..
You will need to change your setting to ntcs instead of pal this will allow you to shoot at 60fps Put your camera in M mode and it should be the second yellow wrench
I watched all 3 parts. Very good videos on getting to know the basics. I just got my t3i in the mail. I plan on shooting tech reviews and other stuff as well. Also, do you have the little remote control for manual focus? Mine came with one from the seller I went through.
hey great video man! there are two green/blue lines on my lcd when previewing an image before I take the photo know any way to get rid of this? and also it takes awhile between when I press the button to when it actually takes a picture, any ideas on how to fix these two things?
Hello ! You were really helpful but I have a quick question. If I want to record at night ( like a mini interview but in a dark setting ) what kind of flash would I need? Or how can I set the flash while recording ?
I haven't gotten the camera yet, but when you take a photo and it comes up on the screen for whatever you choose (you chose 4 seconds), can you take a picture while previewing the other one, or do you have to wait 4 seconds to take another?
Hi Dave,
Here is what Rebel T3i for Dummies says about Metering timer.
pg. 104
Metering Timer: By default, exposure information such as f-stop and shutter speed disappears from the display after 16 seconds if you don't press any camera buttons If you want the exposure data to remain visible for a longer period, you can adjust the shutdown time, but only if you shoot in the following exposure modes:
. P, Tv, Av, M, orA-DEP exposure modes: Look for the Metering Timer option on Shooting Menu 4.
. Movie mode: The option lives on Movie Menu 2.
You can set the timer to values ranging from 4 seconds to 30 minutes Just keep in mind that the metering mechanism uses battery power, so the shorter the cutoff time, the better.
pg.129
1_ Metering Timer. This option is the one that adjusts the auto shutoff timing of the exposure meter, as explained in the earlier section "Customizing the Live
View display." By default the
meter shuts down and disappears
from the display after 16 seconds.

Ken

Hello !
You were really helpful but I have a quick question.
If I want to record at night ( like a mini interview but in a dark setting ) what kind of flash would I need? Or how can I set the flash while recording ?
you need a camera light look up the CN-160 made by nweerer
Thank you for replying 👍
Would I need any other special type of material? Lens? Etc and is it nweerer or newer?
Can I use the T3i for a podcast?
I haven't gotten the camera yet, but when you take a photo and it comes up on the screen for whatever you choose (you chose 4 seconds), can you take a picture while previewing the other one, or do you have to wait 4 seconds to take another?
Thank you for the introduction! I'm excited :) I love RUclips!!
You can also render to MP4 or AVC, or any other if you ment this. No need to render to mov.
