In the early 80's my old band was lucky enough to open for this band at a local bar. We were not very familiar with them but we knew they were new wave and that Micheal Shrive was their drummer. Being as I was the drummer, I was very excited to be in the opening act for Santana's original drummer, the only drummer who had a solo in the theatrical release version of Woodstock. I still consider that it was a great privilege to have met and opened for him.
Finally! Somebody who actually remembers what the Police sounded like. Nice to see that somebody out there has a pair of working ears and a musical memory.
Jack Griffith the guitar player is from St. Albans W.Va. He used to play in a local band called "Skiffle", they played a lot of Beatles stuff (of course). I met him a few times in the Charleston area at gigs and I ran into him in Albany,NY a few years later while he was playing a local gig promoting this album...really down to earth guy and a great guitar player. Very underrated group...great tunes!
I met Jack Griffith this week at a friend's house in Charleston, WV. Super nice guy and he told me the story when he jammed with Mick Jagger. Very cool.
Couldn't agree more. Spoke with him a few times 3-4 years ago when he was living next door to a friend of mine in Charleston. Great guy, very friendly, very humble.
I remember Jackie in the band Skiffle with I believe Tom Benson on guitar also. I was in this band called Hitt and Runn for awhile back then. This was back in the late 70’s when I lived in Charleston. I saw him once again while visiting Charleston about 30 years ago.
Although I STILL (yes, still, and it works . . .) have a turntable, and this album is not yet available on CD, I found a service from which I could buy the vinyl album, and they would include a professionally-recorded CD. It was worth it because their equipment is more elaborate than my entertaiment system. The song "Up Periscope" was what captivated me, because some of my Navy career was spent in the Submarine Service.
thanks so much! Michael Shrieve from Sanatana. Unfortunately this band competed with the Police and Missing Persons and never got the play they deserved. Depeche Mode is here.
Ja poznałam NC przez przypadek - ktoś w necie przypisał "City Bound" The Bolshoi a ja akurat ich szukałam. Mam przegrane dwie ich płyty, od życzliwego z Internetu:)
I only remember "Tattoo", from back in the day (which I love), but I'm amazed how much their other stuff is in the vein of early Police (the rhythms and the sparse guitars). Great stuff.
I saw these guys open for Cheap Trick here in Los Angeles CA in 1892 at the Hollywood Palladium. Cheap Trick were touring in support of their "One on One " release. Novo Combo was excellent. Somewhere I still have a recording of them live during this same time from a FM broadcast on the King Biscuit Flower Hour.. That show is also excellent. What a great band .
Saw these guys in New Jersey one night at a club called Pebbles on RT 17 in Rochelle Park. They warmed up for a local band named Split Sydney who did an AC/DC show. Thought they were just another "New Wave" band. I was captivated by the drummer and was blown away by thier Power Pop brand of music, when I found out the drummer was none other than Michael Shrieve (Santana) and the singer bass player was Stephen Dees I was hooked. Pete Hewlett says legal issues are preventing a cd release!
I remember buying this album in the early 80's and lost it through a devoice. When I tried to find it again on MP3 was never able to find the song. Glad to see it on youtube...
Great to listen to atmospheric and nostalgic music like this in 2020..great respect to Michael Shrieve also for his great breadth of output over the years..
Ça passait en discothèque dans le Gers..!!! Avec Black Rose, Loverboy, Harlequin J'ai cherché l'album pendant des années.........finalement trouvé. Une réédition CD serait la bienvenue ..!
I wasn't thinking that Novo Combo's lead singer sounds like Sting. I know he doesn't. But you have to admit that the guitar and drumming sounds a little like Summers and Copeland. If you won't admit that then I have to assume that you don't remember what the Police sounded like. And leave my chagrin alone, okay?
@Just4YML Thanks for the reply !! Yeah....my experience with Novo Combo was similar to yours. I really liked them a lot. I thought the odds on those guys were pretty good to go big. In that early -mid 80's ear of the beginnings of mindless sequenced pop drivel, they were an example of a band that had a current pop mentality that combined great musicianship with it. I thought another band like this at the time was The Fixx form England. BTW....love the Wolfgan;s Vault for the KBFH shows. !!!
@HipsterDoofusNYC Yes, same for me, there're 2 or 3 like that that i look since the new radios Fm 81', as "Radio 7" and the "Voice of the lizard", i have just found the one;-)))
Victory,i finally found the last two that bewitched me and i was listening at the same time on the FM band :"disappearing" The Sinceros and "turn me on" The Tubes
this is a great album i have mine transfered to cd-r from my vinyl copy sounds good... i like the track sorry for the delay... and this one city bound e train
Dude, if you're still reading this, I have a record player with a USB conneection, so I can digitize this album for you. I used to have it, and it's a great album! I was on RUclips looking for "Long Road" and found this tune.
this is on polydor records ,surely they still have the master tape floating around somewhere,it would be great to have a proper cd release of this album
Wow, this sure brings back memories! When are they going to re-issue their two albums on CD? I still have the record but no record player! Thanks for posting this.
To the chagrin of those who say otherwise....Novo Combo DOES NOT sound like the summner/summers/copeland Blank Blank Blank.....Stephen Dees DOES NOT have that high whiny Jamician Inflection like Stingy!!!!!! If the frickin Police was NOT crammed down FM radio throats......those 'dumb' comparisons would never be brought forth!!!!!!
Had this 30 years ago. Not sure what happened to it. Then I found a mint-ish copy still in shrink wrap within the freebie bin at a local store on International Record Store Day April 20th. This tune, and Sorry (For The Delay) were/are my favourites...nice to own the LP once again :)

most definitely has a police beat and sound- and it's funny, cause I never thought about it until now-
I believe we used to play the song on KY99 in Amarillo at that time.. was in heavy rotation on MTV as I remember...
thanks so much! Michael Shrieve from Sanatana. Unfortunately this band competed with the Police and Missing Persons and never got the play they deserved. Depeche Mode is here.
Super cela faisait longtemps que je n'avais pas entendu cette chanson. Cela me fait voyager dans le passé. Génial. Merci

This song reminds of driving on the old Amarillo air base in my '71 Satellite back in '83.
This is one of the most under rated Band.
I only remember "Tattoo", from back in the day (which I love), but I'm amazed how much their other stuff is in the vein of early Police (the rhythms and the sparse guitars). Great stuff.
Listen to Up Periscope.

I agree. However, you CAN get it on CD. . . . please see the reply I left for tubemenow2007.
Who calls Madonna rock & roll?
