- In this episode of my series “ Walks Dorset” , I take a “Winter” walk in and around the village of Cranborne. Once again I am accompanied by my Whippet, Logan.
My 5 mile circular route commences with a look around the village. I start with an exploration of the Church of St Mary & St Bartholemew. The site of the old medieval Abbey is just to the south of the church on private land.
Passing by both pubs in the village (the Fleur-De- Lys & the Sheaf of Arrows), my route takes me past the Jubilee Gardens and out into the countryside.
I head West close to the banks of the River Allen & catch a glimpse of the impressive Cranborne Manor House - one of the oldest domestic buildings in England.
At Cranborne Farm I was hoping to continue on a detour North Westwards to find the source of the River Crane but sadly a bridge over the river was broken & it was too deep to ford!
Instead, I follow initially the Jubilee Trail Northwards to Jack's Hedge Corner (where there was once a Romano British settlement - long since gone) and then Eastwards to the small hamlet of Boveridge.
Although I was unable to view Boveridge House, I was able to walk by the delightful St Aldehelm's Chapel (now a private home) and the pretty thatched Almshouses.
My final leg took me through the enchanting woods at Burwood before returning to my final destination - The Sheaf of Arrows pub in Cranborne.

Have to say Dave, hearing my music playing over the landscape I grew up in was very special and quite emotional. Thank you.
Thanks Mark. Yes, I think that the "Martin Down" music clip always goes so well with Dorset rolling landscape.
Hi Dave, just finished this walk, it's one of our regulars and just to let you know that the new footbridge is in place, but over a dry river bed! Still water running in Cranborne itself. Lots of blackberries too for Logan. We love this walk through all seasons, so much nature and amazing views. Thanks for all your beautiful walks and for all the effort you take to make them so interesting. Logan and Fiver are the best, such good dogs, we love seeing you all having such fun.😊
Thanks Lynn. Glad to hear that the bridge is back!
Lovely walk Dave and Logan. Catching up with you both is such a wonderful part of my Sunday. The church was amazing and the history of it was so interesting. Love each one you go to Dave. Thank you so much for taking us along on another beautiful walk. You and Logan have a wonderful and sunny week☀️👏🏻
Thanks Melissa. Certainly we are keeping our fingers crossed for some sunny weather soon as we have got so many walks ready to do!
Hello Dave. On the two cast sign posts you showed near the beginning of your walk, they had a number displayed. I just wondered what it related to?
I believe that they may be Grid references (OS Map)?
Not a care in the world, what a life...I'm talking about Logan of course. That pint looks good. Living in France I miss the good old English pubs, but then we've got wonderful auberges and bistros. Take care both. 🐸🥐🍷
Yes, as long as he gets his crisps at the end, Logan is happy!
Fabulous, informative and engaging walks and talks Dave. Thank you!
Thank you & indeed thanks for watching.
I'm disappointed Dave! I'd have thought a man of your calibre would be undaunted by the lack of a bridge. Boots and socks under one arm, Logan under the other, trousers rolled up and across you go 🙂. Used to go to the Fleur De Lys in times past and Cranborne used to do an Open Gardens day (they may still do it, I don't know) where you could go and be nosey around other peoples gardens. Great work and research Dave, keep 'em coming.
Yes, I recall that the Cranborne Village Gardens open weekend certainly taking place in 2021.
Love all of the old signs. Yes, a very delightful village. A wonderful walk ALL of it is so beautiful. Yes, you will have to go back again! Thank you too very much.
It is great that they keep those old signs in such good condition.
🌳🌲🐾 This was such a delightful walk in the countryside! Thank you for taking us along and sharing the history of Cranbourne. The views were breathtaking and the pub at the end was the perfect finish 🍺. Have a great weekend! 👍
Thank you. Glad you enjoyed it. The Sheaf of Arrows made for a great final destination!
Another wonderful walk! Thank you Dave and Logan for sharing it and all the interesting information. It is a shame the bridge was out, but a good job it wasn’t on your main route! We have ended up getting our feet wet a few times when out walking especially in the winter! We finally invested in some sealskinz socks and were pleased with the results (well we have dry feet but the shoes still need to dry out). Thanks once again, we will definitely add the walk to our list!
Thank you. Normally Logan & I are quite bold in crossing streams but in this instance, as we would have had to cross it again coming back, we decided against it. There was another couple of walkers who passed us at the same spot that made the same decision!
Hi Dave , living near Wimborne, this is one of our favourite walks . In a while, that wood you walked through towards the end of walk , will be full of Bluebells 😊😊
I shall have to go back and check those out. thanks for the "heads up".
Amazing countryside with wonderful village and stunning beauty
Many thanks Keith.
I think Cranbourne Chase area was a favourite haunt of the late, great Jack Hargreaves and his home patch after leaving the New Forest area ? Great video Dave !
Thank you Geoff. I used to love watching Jack Hargreaves back in the day.
Lovely walk dave, we do this one regularly, Castle Hill is worth a visit, used to go up there as kids, fond memories.
Thanks. I can see why you do that walk regularly, the views around there are stunning!
Hi Dave another lovely walk in a beautiful area. We think you should have your on tv series your a natural. Thank you for all you are doing . God bless you😊
Thank you for your kind comments Ralph.
Cranborne Chase is one of my favourite areas. Looking forward to doing this walk - thanks Dave & Logan!
Thanks Kev. I hope that you enjoy your walk there when you go.
Another great walk Dave, it's a shame you couldn't go see the monuments. Southampton University have been digging there for the last few five years, some really interesting finds: pottery, charred bones, many, many stone tools. Cheers!
Thank you. So much history to explore around there for sure - I will have to go back!
All the information on Cranbourne was really interesting and that chapel at Boveridge was stunning. I also loved Logan's evident fascination with ancient earthworks whilst you were talking about cursus!! Such a faithful companion he definitely deserved those crisps at the end!
Thanks Jean. I was rather taken by that little Chapel at Boveridge too.
@bobbybigboyyes Oh yes, of course!
Stunning walk in the February sun Dave .You cant beat Dorset ,so well managed by the farmers .
Thanks Ian. It was a beautiful winter's day for that walk.

Thanks for a very interesting video. Have been through Cranborne many times on the way from Fordingbridge to the Great Dorset Steam Fair. Much better informed on the area due to your well researched video. Thank you Dave.
Thanks Colin. Cranborne is such a pretty village to visit for sure.
Thank you Dave and Logan that was a delight. Take care.
Thank you Christine.
