I know, right? Something about this gets me in my essential gayness. I honestly cannot imagine any str8 guy liking this. I can just barely see a str8 woman liking this. "You can spare me the blues, I don't sing in that keeeeey..."
Folks, we won't hear the likes of this singing again in our lifetime. This is one of my favorite Streisand songs, but really there are too many to list. She is the greatest star, no doubt, with that God-given voice. We are blessed to hear it.
Folks, “MusicToMyEars”, is sucking it up BIG TIME. “We won’t hear the likes of this singing again in our lifetime.” Okay, we get it, you love her singing but she’s one of many great singers.
one of my favorite moments in the song is when she sings, "life's a bed of roses swirling perfume on me" and the horns "spritz her", then, "you can spare me the blues" and the orchestra hits it with a blues type burst, then, "I don't sing in that key", and the orchestra & her switch up the key. it's really a remarkable piece of music both orchestra & vocalist
Yuge. Just Googled this, it was written for this movie, I only wanted to know the authors because I thought it was Amerikuhn songbook classic. It is, but a more recent 1 that this lady inspired.
Barbra has the most beautiful hands. Beautiful nails. She really is such a 'once in a lifetime' beautiful woman. Has been a part of my life since the 1970's. I hate her politics but I feel so privileged to be alive in a time to have seen such talent. I mean she's just incredible.
the trick whether you think you do or don't agree with someone's politics is to take the time & effort to find out what actually motivates their views. streisand has made it pretty darn clear over the years that extreme compassion & thought & research inform her opinions, and she doesn't just express them she acts on them in the most honest & mindful of ways
"What's your secret, Gorgeous?!! Just lucky, I guess!!" Not only a great vocal, but a stunning piece of theater. The entire performance erupts from the emotion of the character. It starts from a record- and small bits of business of humming along and even singing in counterpart- but then a rush of anger and frustration brings on a new reprise of the song by the time Fanny has come to the empty stage. Shades of "Don't Rain On My Parade." Had the clip continued for a few more seconds, you would've seen the dejected James Caan overhearing everything. A wonderful clip of "Funny Lady."'
Totally Agree..I have seen her in concert 5x... Her performances get in my soul....Just Fabulous...this song is great great...FYI....just finished her book....Almost 1,000 pages..I read it in 4 nights...I couldn't put it down...She was so candid my heart leapt!!!!
I thank the stars that my life took place at the same time as Ms Streisand. She has been a constsnt source of joy (except for the rarety of her live performances, and the insane ticket prices that made attending her concerts impossible) And as someone else stated THAT DRESS!!!!
Considering it's been FINALLY been green lit, we're going to find out! Word on the street is Gaga is playing Louise and Travolta is playing her love interest Herbie. Last I heard, they're talking a Christmas 2017 release. I was never into Gypsy but being a Streisand vehicle, I'm in!
True that. Oh well, I'd would prefer to see her in a remake of Sunset Blvd. (the movie version)anyway ... with a little of the musical thrown in. Tom Cruise to play cocky "Joe". She's old enough now.
This song! That Voice! THAT DRESS!!! In 1975 "Funny Lady" was not a critical success. It did become a commercial success but, I digress. I was 15 years old in 1975; No VHS, No DVD, No streaming video. From the first screening I saw of this film back in the day I was hooked. I cannot remember how many times I managed to go back to see it but, I do remember it changed my life and I became the ardent Barbra Fan I am today.
I was born in 77... The first time I saw this I was in my teens... I saw funny girl second... (oddly enough)... I watched this movie over and over!!! I fanatically love this song and movie
Actually this was a favorite of the critics--they were so happy to see her in a musical again after five years. The exception was Pauline Kael who wrote a scathing lengthy review that managed to insult Barbra and her fans.
In terms of plot, this song and “I’m the Greatest Star” are show stopping songs where the audience is supposed to embrace Fanny. This is the moment Funny Girl works and Funny Lady falters. Streisand is the toughest of A list actresses, but she is best at being vulnerable …and off putting when playing tough. Bette Davis was opposite. So interesting.
Incredible! But this video/recording is sped up,,, up by a half step. I know this song well I've seen this song in the movie 100's of times. And the performance is even better at the original speed,,, and her voice is even richer. Videos like this should not be shared unless the original speeds of the recordings can be respected. Otherwise it leaves everything sounding distorted
everyone in those day threw there cigarettes on the floor. you could smoke everywhere and you'd see them on the floor in grocery stores and everywhere in between. that was just how it was. we had a grocery store here in Louisville KY "Meltons" I remember my mom smoking and throwing her lit butt down on the floor while shopping and this was the 2000's
Even though Barbra’s voice isn’t as good as it was say 10 years or for that matter 3 or so years ago, we have to consider that the woman was in her 70s here. And yet note perfection, unmistakably unique, she still finds the confidence and vocal strength to pull off singing a ballad. And she never ever lip syncs, which seems to be the habit of a few of her contemporaries, who I feel are cheating the audience.
In the movie "Funny Girl" Fanny is sweet and innocent and is treated with enormous sympathy. In the follow up "Funny Lady" Fanny has some real edges to her personality. Not anywhere as congenial by any means. Lots of arguments with the other characters in the storyline.
I remember going to the theatre with my parents and seeing this movie when i was 5 years old! I remember it vividly! My parents were both big fans of Barbara and we saw all her movies. I thought she was so beautiful, funny and classy! I was also obsessed with all the costumes throughout this movie! I also remember thinking Norman has big breasts!! LOL
The first film imo had far more egregious anachronisms as far as wardrobe and especially hair. The movie and it’s sequel have always been a Barbara vehicle

The problem with the movie (which really isn't bad) was how unrealistic it felt for sweet innocent Fanny to become a barely recognizable rude and arrogant bitch in such a short time span. In Funny Girl, we rooted for Fanny, but in Funny Lady, we rooted for Billy Rose (whom Fanny treated like sh*).
Yeah but it was fun! There is a supposedly a quote/ story that Fanny was walking with her friend in New York, looked up at one of the buildings and told her friend "Up there is the office if the most evil man I ever met." She was talking about Billy Rose.
Really? Was Fanny really that sweet and innocent in Funny Girl? She was already ruthlessly determined to be a star, to do things her way, to go after what she wanted. It's not a big leap from that to someone who, with more money and success, is more controlling and determined not to lose the position and power that they've fought for. Also, while the story of Funny Lady is about as far from the truth as the story of Funny Girl, the character of Fanny is much, much closer to the real Fanny Brice. It was one of the things that finally persuaded Streisand to do the film. It gave her a new acting challenge: to play something much closer to the real Fanny Brice. And those aspects included her somewhat cynical & world-weary attitude (hardly surprising after what she went through with Arnstein), her sardonic sense of humour, her fastidious sense of style, even the way she called people "kid" because she didn't or couldn't be bothered remembering names. There's also more of an attempt to have Streisand look as Brice did in those years.
This is why im happy to be a gay man.

That moment at the 1:55 mark when suddenly it's like watching a film noir musical. BRILLIANT.

In my opinion, this was the best directed-staged song in the film. Very complicated lighting and camera work.
