  • Richard says his six-year marriage to Kelli ended mainly due to Kelli’s obsession with keeping “stuff”! The couple has been divorced for 12 years and is considering getting re-married, but only if Kelli can stop hoarding once and for all. Then, four siblings say their mother's hoarding is so out of control that nearly every inch of her 9,000-square-foot home is filled with junk, and their father says he moved out of the house two years ago because of the mess. Finally, soap-opera actress Tracy seeks Dr. Phil's help for her hoarding 71-year-old-mother, who could be evicted from her home at any minute, and tells him what it is like growing up in a home full of filth, chaos and animals.

@@perfectlyimperfect9129 But they don't care that it hurts the ones they love enough to get well. Alcoholics are very selfish people too but an alcoholic has a higher likelihood of recovery than a hoarder. My brother is a recovering addict and got into treatment before he met his wife who turned out to be a hoarder. He left her (and the hoarder house they own together) and got a new place and she followed him to the new place. Wo they pay over 2k a month for a house that is being used a storage facility. She is starting to hoard the new place. I guess they will abandon it and move to a third place.

Trust in Christ who died on the cross for our sins and rose from the dead the 3rd day and ascended into heaven where he now sits at the right hand of the Father to mediate for our sins.

I believe in many cases hoarding isn't fixable. You can clean a hoarders house and as soon as you turn your back they will fill it back up again. Their junk means more to them than any human relationships. Unless they are willing to go on medication and have frequent therapy and work with a professional organizer continuously- they will not recover.

I haven't watched my tv in about 3 yrs because of all the clothes. They're in every room in my house except for the bathroom & kitchen. Not thrown down in the floor. Hanging on clothes racks. On the backs of chairs. On the bed in one of my bedrooms. My other bedroom doesn't have a bed or any furniture in it because there isn't room. I have plastic crates stacked up to the ceiling in 2 bedrooms. I've spent too much money to just donate them. They still have tags on them. I am 68 yrs old & if I wore a different blouse/sweater every day for the rest of my life I wouldn't wear the same one twice. I WANT at least 3/4 of this STUFF out of my house! I want a normal, organized home again. I've ALWAYS hated clutter! But I am so OVERWHELMED til I can't do anything with it because there is literally nowhere to put it. Every space is taken up. @@user-np9mq3oz3iif you were our neighbor my husband and I would help you prepare a plan to clean and unload. There are other people out there that are in your area that would help you out. Sometimes you just have to let your guard down and open up some if your vulnerability and allow people that care to step in. Usually houses like yours require small highly dedicated teams. But it can always be broken up from room to room, or simply one corner, to the next corner. Realistically speaking, you have too much to resell on your own. Find someone in your area that is a trustworthy reseller of items and clothing, invite them to come into your home with the intent that they will buy a large bulk of items. The thing is, when selling your things to a reseller the prices go pretty low, but your gained sense if order and peace will be priceless. There is a massive sense of freedom once you can shed the loads of things that are smothering you and your home. Just done ideas from working in a few hoarder houses. I get totally overwhelmed in these houses, but with a ton of perseverance and hope somehow it always does turn out good. You must write the goals on a calendar that you look at daily. Make a plan and pick a day to start implementing new habits to unclutter. If you don't voice the plan out loud and initiate a step forward, you will continually, for months and years put the task off, put it off. Stop losing all these years and peace you can and will have. Once the ball gets rolling, it will keep rolling. Step out in faith and ask others for help, and pay others for help. You could even pay people with barter system. They work for items/clothes in your home. Just throwing some ideas out there that I've personally dealt with. Hope at least one thing I mentioned plants a seed.

Patricia, owning it is half the battle. Being embarrassed, knowing it's not right, they're all good signs.
You have plenty of reasons why your place is in the state it's in, but you now need ru look forward, and stop beating yourself up on getting here.
You will need help, there are professional cleaners on tik tok that will empty and clean hoarders houses for free, without the occupant being shown, and they love this stuff, they do it without judgement.
If you can be part of the tidying process, that often works to not allowing this to happen again, because you know what its like to do that break back cleaning. But if you can't, that's OK too. You might not be physically able to, but bigger than that, you might try to stop them throwing rubbish out.
Let it all go. I promise the feeling afterwards you'll have, and the life you'll get to live again will be more rewarding than that stuff.
      You can do this ❤

My ex mother in law was the same. Even had dried dog and cat poop smashed into the rug everywhere. One time we decided to clean the living room for her because it was literally just trash and old newspapers stacked taller than the dining room table. Afterwards she got angry saying we threw out her newspapers from the 80’s. I explained they were soaked in cat pee but she didn’t care. After that I considered her a lost cause and never returned. Over 20 years later my ex husband told me nothing’s changed.

One thing is that you continue to have those tendencies but you learn to recognize your triggers and to not let things build again. You stop being “clutter blind”. I function fine at work but it has taken me 4 years to be able to get back in the routine of deep cleaning my house. It wasn't hoarded it was pretty cluttered. I just couldn't get up and get started. Thank God watching some motivational cleaning channels on RUclips tube has helped me a great deal. I don't go to bed until my dishes are clean and put away. I don't leave my house on the weekends until my floors and bathrooms are cleaned. I am now helping one of my Aunts deep clean her house. It's not unlike addictions or disorders which are mentally rooted. Some people hoard stuff, other people have shopping addictions, others are obsessive compulsive. Some people feel safe having a lot of stuff even if it has no monetary value. They may have had a hard life, suffered abuse or have been or become poor. These people need some sympathy and understanding.instead they are being laughed at by the audience and their own family. No wonder they have a disorder.shame on you "Dr" Phil.

This isn't really an issue about selfishness.. that is something the person can change. Hoarding is much deeper and a mental health issue.

Excuse me animals aren't at a down level! They are full of unconditional love and they're smarter than a lot of humans I know!

I don't understand how a spouse or family member can except not only a messy house, but a hoarding house from the very beginning! Do they tell themselves? Oh well, I can live with this until it gets floor to ceiling. Then i'll put my foot down.

Hoaders do not see their hoards as stuff, each piece is valuable to them... I don't get it but I have seen it....

The dentist claiming she's had a hard life irks me. A child of mine is in her grave, and I don't hoard. Her "giving" is just another way of controlling people.

I have never thought of this in this way. I don't have a hoarder that I'm dealing with but what you said about controlling other people with the goods they have hit home. It is a way of controlling other people.

This would give me SO much anxiety. Id report her when their son didn't have a place to sleep ! Him putting her before their son is despicable.. Hoarders number 1 on their list ARE THEIR THINGS - not their family. Oh yeah - SO funny.

'Their things' serve a purpose and fill a need in their minds.. and they need help to deal with the control of keeping things and need to learn other coping mechanisms to deal with their mental health issue..

The father should have prioritised their son. He needs a normal, clean home. His own bedroom and bed!! Mostly, he needs to know he's loved enough to MATTER. To be taken care of, given loving attention. To be able to bring friends home. BOTH these 'parents' have failed him and, undoubtedly, damaged him somehow.Dr. Phil should have addressed THAT

There's so many who judge and criticize. People rent storage units without realizing it's all very similar. There's shame and pain and denial involved in this problem. There are good intentions to do better but just like losing weight, it is easier said than done. There needs to be more compassion for this condition.

I can understand these hoarders to a point. I used to hoard media-books, cds. and blu-rays/dvds. Then I started watching episodes of the show "Hoarders" on RUclips. That inspired me to get rid of the bulk of my media with the assistance of a junk removal company. However, the hoarders shown is this video are delusional, out-of-control and unreasonable.
