I am so blessed to have known, and been friends with this incredible woman ! Not only a great movie star 🌟, but also one of the finest ladies I've ever had the pleasure of knowing .
Yes, she was! Would love to chat with you. Just released the first in-depth biography of Eleanor, "Eleanor Powell: Born to Dance" through University Press of Kentucky.
I read that not only did she do all her own choreography, but she trained her little dog here too. Eleanor Powell just brings joy to all. What a talent! 💗
The beauty of this sequence is that she has trained the dog to respond not to words of command but to taps and arm gestures. The dance therefore becomes a further integration of her art- to include another living creature.
This is an INCREDIBLE performance! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 WHAT I WOULDN’T GIVE to be able to dance LIKE Eleanor did! I ❤ WATCHING the dancers from these times… I’m MESMERISED at how GREAT they are! W🤩W! Her SPINNING is MAGICAL! I’d be DIZZY and FALL OVER… 😂 I had VERTIGO once and I WOULDN’T like THAT to be one of the requirements of my career! 😂
This lady had it all, she was exceptionally beautiful, she had an exceptional talent, she could act and she had exceptional class. She could even out-dance Fred Astaire, I read a quote from him saying that she was the only dancer he had to work hard to keep up with. I'd love to have seen her dance with Gene Kelly, her athleticism would have fit well with his style, though he might have had the same problem Astaire did keeping up with her. It seems to me that many figure skaters must have watched videos of her and copied her movements, especially her spins. It must have been truly fantastic to see her dance in person.
I love it, Jim! What a great number! Ms. Powell is just amazing, and I love the dog! So cute! Thanks so much for sharing, this brightened my day! Take care, my friend, have a great week :))
I'm sorry, I don't speak english, I meant the image is very good, like HD. Usually black and white movies have a very bad definition. I don't know if you understood me haha
At about 3:27, Powell's pants smack Buttons. Kinda reminiscent of Ginger Rogers' sleeve smacking Fred Astaire during the Let's Face the Music and Dance number from Follow the Fleet.
Yes, - what dancers (and actors) - and singers ,. . AND some writers. . . are aiming for, or TRYING to aim for SOMETHING WHICH NOBODY ELSE HAS MANAGED BEFORE ! J.
Eleanor Powell in "Lady be good" - That scene was shot in her own living room because it was where the dog was trained to do all the tricks. Amazing tap dance and acrobatic routine
She was so very talented. I heard she developed severe arthritis and that is what ended her dancing career. Sad. She was and remains the best female tap dancer ever and, in addition, this vid shows off her great athleticism !!! Thankful you found this vid and posted it here. Can anyone help to identify what movie this is ??
Holy shit. This woman is brilliant. Better dancer than Fred himself. Yes and I dont care what anyone thinks. You also dance in sync with a dog doing tricks. All one take...one mistake and you do it again and again and again. Thats how hard this routine was.
fred astaire ,copyed this type of shot after this, making up a dance with the set ,or im wrong?fred seem to do that in every film after this 1 ,or im just seeing things ?can anyone tell me the movie befor this one where fred solos in god mode ,if not this is were he got it from ,like to know :)
Fred soloing in "god mode"??? Dancers back then were part self-choreographed and part studio-choreographed. Each dancer had their specialties that were featured. Similar things might be a result of the studio choreographers, but the dancers themselves weren't actually copying each other's work. Sets varied depending on what the movie plot/location was about. No, Fred didn't have to copy anyone! Some dancers tried to copy him!
ok i was asking . Fred said she was the best . her ,born to dance film ,is unmatched , fred is by far top man on film. as a woman she got weaker as she aged , she passed her peak after 1939 .god mode is super human .not a slur on fred
The truth is she developed severe arthritis and that is what shortened her career. Sad. Because she was and still remains unmatched at tap dancing. Her athleticism was phenomenal!!!!!
This doesn't look or sound like the early thirties at all. Film and sound quality is far better than 1931. Although the print looks way too dark, but that's a modern mess-up.
Great, Miss Powell! Imagine you hlive in the flat straight under hers - you must love all this tsps or you'll go crazy. Dont forget: She has to train very often before she can present it in this way ...
What talent .there. a lot of talent now days but it is not used . Let us see new musical films ..instead of listening to mindless moment musical and rap .

If true, yes you are blessed !!!
absolutely. true

❤ I've watch this dance segment many times and it always puts a huge grin on my face. She was my fav tapper.
Wow!! You were truly blessed! I love that she was a devout Christian, too.
2:20 - Buttons SWAYING his little behind from side-to-side here is ADORABLE! ❤
I read that not only did she do all her own choreography, but she trained her little dog here too. Eleanor Powell just brings joy to all. What a talent! 💗
The greatest tap dancer of all time, was taught by a legend. A super athlete, with percussion skills off the charts.
brilliant and joyous...what a talent and beauty she was, simply perfection!
I agree! Amazing beauty and dancer, for sure. Thank you for you comment.
Jim
Best female tap dancer of all time incredible footwork.
Absolutely the BEST
Even better than Fred Astaire + very down to earth person.@@joannetailor4094
The best tap dancer ever
@@joannetailor4094 agree Eleanor was trained in ballet before she took up tap which is a great advantage, That’s why her turns are so relaxed.
No matter how down I’m feeling, I watch this and I’m back in a happy mood again. Boy, she was beautiful
Wow, what a dancer!!!! She was simply the best.
"More stars than there are in heaven." And Buttons, too! Splendid!
Wow. That woman not only tapped incredibly but she even taught the dog to respond to her taps. Amazing.
A fabulous routine.and Buttons seemed to enjoy it too....
What fabulous rhythm Elanor has, and the look of love in Button's eyes is too precious!
okay, that dog is awesome! and of course ms powell is the best!
She choreographed the number and trained the dog too ❤️
@@4508bluesky Actually, Jackie Ackerman was the dog trainer.
WOW! THIS IS STELLAR! She is my favorite dancer and that dog is the MOST! LOVE her outfit- those palazzo pants! UNMATCHED talent! Kimberly
I didn't know that Eleanor Powell could somersault and do the splits like that! What a treasure!
Fred Astaire didn't want to share the stage with her.....she was too good!
Didn't know she was pretty much a gymnast too, amazing.
She actually started out as a child doing lyrical acrobatic dance, not tap.
She started out in ballet and gymnastics. Before tapping
It's the Hammer pants that elevate her to legend status.
Such a talented lovely dancer. I can watch Eleanor Powell all day just the sight of her brings me joy.
Talk about versatility.......she had it all. She is fantastic, acrobatic and a joy to watch with that great smile!
The beauty of this sequence is that she has trained the dog to respond not to words of command but to taps and arm gestures. The dance therefore becomes a further integration of her art- to include another living creature.
Eleanor Powell I was so lucky to be the generation which included this so very talented woman.she never got the publicity she deservered.

Untouchable lady at this game !
Wow what a great scene. I will take this over her dancing with the stiff Fred Astaire anytime. Brilliant
Fred Astaire and “stiff” cannot logically match! Consider the difference of sex and age.
She was damn beautiful and talented...hard to believe she is was way older than my mother even. RIP fine lady
childhood memories abound. i remember the beautiful and talented miss powell, and the song. thanks jim.
I love her pants. They look very much like a long skirt; and, she has full freedom of movement.
This video should have the most views on RUclips.
Stunning performance
Lovely doggie
Love it!
I'm writing a WW2 story about my parents and I was researching when I found this.
+Elizabeth Goehringer So glad you liked it! Thanks so much for watching and commenting!
Jim
Eleanor Powell never got amount of recognition she deserved. So much more talent than her contemporary dancers.
Oh how wonderful!!! Pure magic.
That was marvelous. Eleanor was a treasure.
Fantastic, brilliant!
Great performance
Damn, this woman was a dancer and gymnast combined! And she really enjoyed what she was doing- it's obvious.
The best dance routine of all time!
See her routine with drummer Buddy Rich. WOW!
This is fantastic dance.
Oh so good this lady and looking great

This clip demonstrates a person can teach a dog anything if the dog is paid enough.
Paid in treats!
Amazing!
Remarkable how few edits there are in this routine! She trained the dog herself !!! Brilliant. Extrardinary.
Gershwin, Powell and Buttons. What could be better!
That is amazing, great quality!
She was sure Something! Thank you so much for watching it!

Great. Realy great
Sigh…I wish she was still with us…so beautiful and talented with a smile that makes me smile.

The greatest female dancer ever.
Elinor Powell is an amazing dancer that can hold her own with any dancer
Simply the best dancer ever! Better than any female or male dancer. Check out other Eleanor Powell videos amazing!
cute routine.
After watching this, if ya ain't in love with this exquisite being, you ain't alive !!!
Eleanor is pretty cute too.😅😢

Well trained dog ( well trained dancer as well ).
nice pants
They called them harem pants back in the day. Eleanor liked to tantalise her male fans by hiding her gams in baggy pants now and again.
Go ahead....Cheer me up! Thanks.
Eleanor Powell was so beautiful. That is all.
She was so very talented. I heard she developed severe arthritis and that is what ended her dancing career. Sad. The movie title is "Lady Be Good", from 1941. She was amazing, for sure. Thanks so much for your comment!
Jim
I have read that she retired when she married Glenn Ford.
It was Vera-Ellen who contracted arthritis, but only during the 24 years between her retirement from films and her death.
The movie is Lady be Good
She did perform other dance numbers in a film with Esther Williams and on television!
Holy shit. This woman is brilliant. Better dancer than Fred himself. Yes and I dont care what anyone thinks. You also dance in sync with a dog doing tricks. All one take...one mistake and you do it again and again and again. Thats how hard this routine was.

@@v.gorski3050 Not true. She retired to marry and start a family. She was still able to perform professionally in the early 1960s.

those were the days...
Best canine dancer ever.
That' why the stars did not like to work with these dogs . . . every one is watching the cute dog . hahahahahahaha
She made those pants stylish 50 years before M.C. Hammer!
Dog is the best
Does anyone know if Buttons is still living?!?
Duh. He'd be about 84. What's that in dog years?
@@esmeephillips5888 I was being facetious, duh!!
@@bobbyd1019 So was I. He is enjoying a well-earned retirement in Palm Springs, but he does the odd cameo, and has signed for 'Fast and Furious 27',
That's too funny...your humor is appreciated!...😅
She was so hot then best looking fantastic dancer NOBODY gets close......I'm 72 now just a fantastic women
I wonder how many takes this took
This feels more 1931 than 1941 am I missing something?
Ten years? Film quality is def after '36. ou mean tap well that carried on into the fifties.
This doesn't look or sound like the early thirties at all. Film and sound quality is far better than 1931. Although the print looks way too dark, but that's a modern mess-up.
Eleanor is great as always but the dog stole.it!!
I'd like to see Eleanor Powell slice, story
Damn how you train a dog doing that
The dog stole the show.
They say Astaire was the Greatest but he never worked intimately with a live dog in his routine.
At one point it looked as if the dog was really having fun! Not just something taught as a routine!
Great, Miss Powell! Imagine you hlive in the flat straight under hers - you must love all this tsps or you'll go crazy. Dont forget: She has to train very often before she can present it in this way ...
The only flaw is the table at the end
Timmer
What talent .there. a lot of talent now days but it is not used . Let us see new musical films ..instead of listening to mindless moment musical and rap .
Wow, so all of rap is mindless? That's a huge genre you realize and there are a lot of talented rappers.
Sure some one today can do it, but they do in 100 re-takes, which legendary actress would have taken 1 or two
