- I needed a break from my computer, a change of scenery, some escapism, a little adventure. So I decided to get out of town for a catch and cook get-away, and maybe catch a beautiful Halibut in the surf.
One thing I’ll share from my own experience is, if you want to become consistently successful at catching all kinds of fish in the surf, one thing you’re gonna need to learn, is how to observe, understand, and respond to WATER QUALITY. And this 2-day fishing trip, was all about hunting for quality water.

I really appreciate the detailed info including your equipment. It has given me some good ideas on where to fish in my area. Thanks. I especially loved your advice on releasing the fish . It really pains me when fisherman treat the shorts roughly. I know some people can’t resist keeping shorts because they are such good eating , please don’t do that. Good luck in your hunt! Each spot tends to hold more or less big/small butts, so maybe try fishing other spots when searching for your first legal size hali. But the real secret is like I always say SLOW LOW & STEADY.. that's what gets the bigger more experienced fish to bite. Crawl it on bottom like a snail. As slow as you can go, without getting snagged ;)

Yummy. Great explanation and its nice to see an experet confirm what I have suspected for a while - a bit of churn in the water is fine for surf fishing, just not blackout chocolate milk.

surf-forecast.com and Surfline app .. the Surfline app also provides water temp
Wind - I use windy app
Tides, I have an iOS app called “Tides” you see the screenshots of it in this video.
For weather I just use the standard apple weather app or sometimes weather channel app

Your videos have been somewhat scarce. Busy or no catches? This video is super cerebral analysis of water quality and "butt" fishing. Last week I tried perch/striper/halibut fishing in Santa Cruz's super calm surf. Waters at 3 beaches were ugly chocolate dirty?? With only a few hours to fish. Not good!! Maybe I need to try AV breach or way out around the point.
I’ve been mega busy organizing a million projects. Prioritizing and planning. Not fishing as much as I was, but I’ll get back to it. Sorry to hear your Santa Cruz trip didn’t work out. Yeah plenty of halibut are being caught get out there.
