I'm not sure how the algorithm directed me to these videos as I am a Chemical Engineer with not even a passing hobbyist interest in locks. But then I got hooked on these videos and have to admit I am close to ordering the lock pick kit just to have fun. One conclusion I have drawn from the various defeats of the broad range of locks included in the series is that no lock is able to withstand a determined attack. What they do is keep honest people honest. I've always thought about the merit of increased security doors on homes when a rock through the window is a faster way in anyway, which is exactly what happened at my work when they climbed through and then took the conference TV off the wall.
I'm actually more impressed by the mounting hardware used on the fence. The fact that the welded hasp broke before the fence, bolts/screws, or lock did is pretty surprising.
I've been recommending these as a budget padlock for about 35 years, I have one on my shed (the shed you could open with a tin opener so security is a moot point) it gets used only in the summer and has been in use for over a decade with zero maintenance and is still as good today as the day it was installed.
When nothing breaks and he can't get in with the wrench: "I still don't recommend using this lock because I can easily get in by using this truck to drive through the fence."

He basically doesnt reccomend any lock and shits on all lock companies just because he is an extremely talented lockpicker. I also like this series. Most burglars don't pick locks. They use Brute Force, or bypass the lock completely, like jumping over the wooden fence... LPL is just showing us some of the more realistic attacks against locks by criminals. I read about the guys that go into an apartment building with a hockey bag containing a few sections of 4x4 and a hydraulic jack. An admittedly ballsy technique, ripe with risk of discovery during the minute or two it takes them to almost silently force a door open, but if they make it inside, they're golden. No skills required.
True. 99cent hammer, 99 cent miniature pry bar and 99 cents worth of wire can get u in just about anything. I used to do foreclosure renovations for a local credit unions mortgage dept. Never came across something "inaccessible". A Pipe wrench could've been useful a few times.

the cleverest setup I've seen for the disc padlock is to surround it with a short piece of heavy steel pipe, so that the lock is not susceptible to most types of mechanical attacks.
Have been waiting these type of test and proves my point ... why waste hundred on a huge padlock and then only spend 10 to buy a cheap chinese hasp that falls apart when you sneeze on them. Would like to see Abus 135/200 hasp in similar test ... is is worth over hundred dollar or not .

Interesting. I while in maintenance used to work around coworkers who would drill out bolt locks on entry doors. Seemed to take forever. I figured out to dimple the top and bottom of the lock casing with two sharp hammer blows, then id apply my pipe wrench and give it a firm turn ... Thelocks mounting bolts would snap and the lock turning would either unbolt the door or just disintegrate the plunger. Either way open within 20 seconds with hardly any noise. Occasionally on cheaper doors there may be some damage. But in a emergency it became my goto. Thank God now ive got you. Thanks for the help.

In all fairness to the hasp, you have stressed that thing so much twisting all of those other locks that eventually it had to break at some point. Just a suggestion, but replace that hasp/gate lock and then give it another try with the same lock.
Yes, because everyone replaces a hasp each year or more often to make sure they aren't already stressed out. You aren't being very creative with your trolling if that's what your aiming for
Dosen't matter you can put a pipe on end of the wrench for unlimited amount of stress on the hasp and lock any way. It's a common thing to do with wrenches for bolts etc.
I was working for a fiber optics installation company. I ran the warehouse and did basic care on their fleet of vehicles. We had a man quit and he left locks on a bucket truck's tool bins. This had happened before and normally I took care of the problem with a pair of bolt cutters. However he had used Masterlock disc locks and with how they fit I couldn't get to the locks hasp to cut it. I broke the locks off with a hammer. It was harder than opening a normal padlock with a hammer and it totally destroyed the locks (often you can reuse a normal padlock after popping it with a hammer). I broke the hasps out the sides of the case. I didn't hurt the bins. On the other hand most Masterlocks are garbage, so other disc locks might have been much more of a challenge.
Still "in like Flynn" its always the weakest link that breaks. Seen lots of expensive locks on wothless hasps in my life. You has was still quite good viewing the amount of force needed. Great series.

Seeing that the hasp broke and the padlock was unharmed "doesn't give much confidence that a disc padlock will provide significant additional protection" is an odd conclusion. For a door with a stronger hasp, he has no evidence that this disc lock is vulnerable to a twisting attack. Would need to test that first to draw any conclusions at all.
I used to repair wheel magazines for an explosives company. There were two locks on the doors of these mags and you had to reach up and inside the bottom of a bottomless boxes welded to the door to get at the padlocks. The boxes prevented you from using a pipe wrench or a pry bar on the locks. Another very good method of preventing someone from using force of this kind is to put the lock and the hasp inside the door. You cut a hole about six inches in diameter through the door so that you can reach in to unlock the padlock but the placement of the hole precludes the use of a lever tool since you cannot move your arm to operate it. The hole is covered with a tear drop shaped cover that gravity holds in place to keep the rain out. Most hasps can be defeated with a file or battery powered grinder, a pin punch, and a small hammer. Simply remove the riveted over edge on the top or bottom of the hinge pin with the file or grinder and drive the pin out. Hasp falls apart an in you go. Exposed hinges are much the same.
A mechanics tool set is 150 bucks or so, a cordless drill or impact driver is another 100 or so. 24 inch pipe wrench~ $25. Even taking these to a shady pawnshop would pay for the wrench 3 fold on the first use.
If you saw someone walking down the street pushing a mower, would you assume theft and stop them? If you don't spot them taking it from your shed and no one sees them doing any obvious lockbreaking shenanigans, all they have to do is act casual and they've already won. Thief skills are only about 10% breaking and picking. The other 90% is manipulating the expectations of the honest. You will never be as good at predicting criminal behavior as they are at predicting yours because you probably have an honest job, whereas their job is to spend all day every day coming up with ways to get away with stuff that isn't theirs.
I use those on storage units. Basically you have to pick or destroy the door. Glad to see some validation of my choice. Only as secure as the hardware youre attached to
Mine storage with this lock was nearly broken into with crow bar they bent the metal so much I couldn't open the door when I removed the lock. Manybof the units near mine same thing. To me it looked like they could of gotten it ope. Of they pulled harder or had two people and two crow bars at once. But I don't think they got mine opne unless the facility pushed it closed. They are telling .e they didnt
I have several Brinks Disc padlocks. One on my shed where I store my motorcycle, lawn mower, weed eater and leaf blower. and my tool box on wheels. I also keep my propane grill in the shed as well. I also made a motor powered dead bolt to secure the door to the other door I use large nails to secure the door to the floor and door frame.
If only you had a computer and access to all of the world's knowledge so that you could just type a word in and have the definition pop up on your screen... too bad nothing like that exists.
Many years ago I was working on a building site. When we came down from the scaffolding to get changed and go home, we found one of these circular padlocks on our lockup. It took us nearly an hour to cut it off with a lump hammer and chisel! (the only tools readily available) The incredible thing was, that nobody called the police! There we were in the street (this was in London) taking it in turns with the hammer. When we finally got in, we found that somebody had nicked half our tools.
Excellent videos. Any padlock need to buried inside a steel shroud cover / steel box which provide protection against physical force and access and also makes it very much more difficult for professional pickers. Such a great channel.

This one is a classic on padlocks in Europe ! Work like a charm, the lock can only be picked (not many people know how to) or drilled (extremely loud)

Thelocks mounting bolts would snap and the lock turning would either unbolt the door or just disintegrate the plunger. Either way open within 20 seconds with hardly any noise. Occasionally on cheaper doors there may be some damage. But in a emergency it became my goto. Thank God now ive got you. Thanks for the help.

I really enjoy and appreciate this test, I have a similar disk lock on a storage container box. I intend to beef up the box with a bar and recessed lock where implements can not reach it.

In all fairness to the hasp, you have stressed that thing so much twisting all of those other locks that eventually it had to break at some point. Just a suggestion, but replace that hasp/gate lock and then give it another try with the same lock.

Yes, because everyone replaces a hasp each year or more often to make sure they aren't already stressed out. You aren't being very creative with your trolling if that's what your aiming for
Dosen't matter you can put a pipe on end of the wrench for unlimited amount of stress on the hasp and lock any way. It's a common thing to do with wrenches for bolts etc.

A rail spike puller would defeat most locking devices. Locks keep out lazy thieves and honest people
so would a crowbar and I suspect those are more common than rail spike pullers unless you been working on the railroad.
These types of round metal padlock are the best cheap paddocks available Imo. Of course nothing will hold up against a massive pipe wrench.

I was working for a fiber optics installation company. I ran the warehouse and did basic care on their fleet of vehicles. We had a man quit and he left locks on a bucket truck's tool bins. This had happened before and normally I took care of the problem with a pair of bolt cutters. However he had used Masterlock disc locks and with how they fit I couldn't get to the locks hasp to cut it. I broke the locks off with a hammer. It was harder than opening a normal padlock with a hammer and it totally destroyed the locks (often you can reuse a normal padlock after popping it with a hammer). I broke the hasps out the sides of the case. I didn't hurt the bins. On the other hand most Masterlocks are garbage, so other disc locks might have been much more of a challenge.
IF that Lock picking lawyer would just buy things with a key-fob, his life would be so much easier. I mean, he can never seem to find them darn keys.
Still "in like Flynn" its always the weakest link that breaks. Seen lots of expensive locks on wothless hasps in my life. You has was still quite good viewing the amount of force needed.

Seeing that the hasp broke and the padlock was unharmed "doesn't give much confidence that a disc padlock will provide significant additional protection" is an odd conclusion.
For a door with a stronger hasp, he has no evidence that this disc lock is vulnerable to a twisting attack. Would need to test that first to draw any conclusions at all.
Exactly! I love LPL's stuff but this video really bothered me.
I used to repair wheel magazines for an explosives company. There were two locks on the doors of these mags and you had to reach up and inside the bottom of a bottomless boxes welded to the door to get at the padlocks. The boxes prevented you from using a pipe wrench or a pry bar on the locks.
Another very good method of preventing someone from using force of this kind is to put the lock and the hasp inside the door. You cut a hole about six inches in diameter through the door so that you can reach in to unlock the padlock but the placement of the hole precludes the use of a lever tool since you cannot move your arm to operate it. The hole is covered with a tear drop shaped cover that gravity holds in place to keep the rain out.
Most hasps can be defeated with a file or battery powered grinder, a pin punch, and a small hammer. Simply remove the riveted over edge on the top or bottom of the hinge pin with the file or grinder and drive the pin out. Hasp falls apart an in you go. Exposed hinges are much the same.

The wrench is more valuable than anything inside, you're not gonna walk away with a lawnmower
A mechanics tool set is 150 bucks or so, a cordless drill or impact driver is another 100 or so. 24 inch pipe wrench~ $25. Even taking these to a shady pawnshop would pay for the wrench 3 fold on the first use.
If you saw someone walking down the street pushing a mower, would you assume theft and stop them? If you don't spot them taking it from your shed and no one sees them doing any obvious lockbreaking shenanigans, all they have to do is act casual and they've already won. Thief skills are only about 10% breaking and picking. The other 90% is manipulating the expectations of the honest. You will never be as good at predicting criminal behavior as they are at predicting yours because you probably have an honest job, whereas their job is to spend all day every day coming up with ways to get away with stuff that isn't theirs.

Mine storage with this lock was nearly broken into with crow bar they bent the metal so much I couldn't open the door when I removed the lock. Manybof the units near mine same thing. To me it looked like they could of gotten it ope. Of they pulled harder or had two people and two crow bars at once. But I don't think they got mine opne unless the facility pushed it closed. They are telling .e they didnt
I have several Brinks Disc padlocks. One on my shed where I store my motorcycle, lawn mower, weed eater and leaf blower. and my tool box on wheels. I also keep my propane grill in the shed as well. I also made a motor powered dead bolt to secure the door to the other door I use large nails to secure the door to the floor and door frame.
Me, knowing nothing about what a "hasp" is:

The hasp is what the lock locks into.
If only you had a computer and access to all of the world's knowledge so that you could just type a word in and have the definition pop up on your screen... too bad nothing like that exists.

No The Lock Picking Lawyer doesn't make recomendations. He only shows people how he picks locks and points out design flaws in locks.

Many years ago I was working on a building site.
When we came down from the scaffolding to get changed and go home, we found one of these circular padlocks on our lockup.
It took us nearly an hour to cut it off with a lump hammer and chisel! (the only tools readily available)
The incredible thing was, that nobody called the police!
There we were in the street (this was in London) taking it in turns with the hammer.
When we finally got in, we found that somebody had nicked half our tools.

Excellent videos. Any padlock need to buried inside a steel shroud cover / steel box which provide protection against physical force and access and also makes it very much more difficult for professional pickers. Such a great channel.
