Hello, everybody! Today I show you all my anamorphic lens workflow. I cover how to set up the lens as well as editing the footage later. Anamorphic is a niche technique but it is definitely one of my favorites!
Be sure to check out vid-atlantic for anamorphic accessories! They aren't a sponsor but they helped me get my anamorphic rig set up last year.

I swear you are the only one on youtube that mentions the focal length being halved. Thank you
Its not fully true. Its halfed in width but not in height.
It’s not a good practice to scale down footage, nest, then blow it back up. That is a needless resolution loss. You should instead interpret footage as 2x anamorphic as in your first step, then throw it into a sequence with proper DCI settings. Then just shrink the clip to 55% (assuming it’s 4K footage), or to taste to get rid of any anamorphic vignetting. There’s no reason 4K footage should ever go over 100%
2K DCI settings:
2048 width 858 height
Square pixels
Those settings will just make the sequence a SCOPE container, so picture is just edge-to-edge and you can resize shots without worrying about the bars.
Thanks for the info James! I'll have to apply this to my next Anamorphic test.
Another video on youtube, where people upload wrong tutorials because of dangerous half knowledge.
I had this same thought, interpret the footage for the anamorphic de-squeeze and place it in a sequence that has the correct resolution settings and then scale down
Damn bro. Talk about knowing what you're talking about. You sound pretty experienced.
@Alex Taylor Desqueezing is possible on loads of cameras and external monitors already. But you still need to know the aspect ratio and multiplication factor. Automation should really not be a path to less knowledge.
If you're wanting to finish in 2.39:1, you will always lose the edges if you shoot 2x anamorphic with your a7s, since it's a 16:9 camera. Perhaps using a 1.33x will yield better results.
Yeah, I didn't know about the ratios on 16:9 until I had already received the lens last year. I would love 1.33x to see how much of the edges are preserved but I don't have any projects requesting anamorphic to justify it! It just isn't the same with those edges trimmed off.
The difference between 1.33X and 2X anamorphic is night and day, well worth losing some pixels over
Always desqueeze to the same ratio as the lens, not the sensor.
I still have my 1975 edition of the American Cinematographer Handbook.
The Panavision aspect ratio for 35mm film production was established and has always been, 2.35:1.
Just curious from where the 2.39:1 has become the stated ratio?
I used to shoot anamorphic Super 8 film on a Nikon R8 super 8 camera using the excellent KOWA Prominar 16H ( wish I had never sold it).
That gave the projected image the classical 2.66:1 ratio of the original Cinemascope format. ("The Robe" was the first commercial feature to be presented in CinemaScope in 1953, all shot with a single Bauch and Lombe anamorphic lens)
Later Panavision adopted the 2.35 apect ration by changing the film gate dimensions with the 2X anamorphic squeeze.
thanks for the tips and great (mini)tutorial!! thank you!!
great video Taylor!
Hey Taylor, thanks for all the great info, this is the first I heard of this adapter, I have the Sony A6300, will it work with my camera?
Not sure if it was mentioned before but there's an option for A7s to turn on the APS-C feature.
Hey! Great Video!
How did you apply the Color Correction so quick?
Cheers
Good job.
3:05 I have coined a new term for this effect. It's the Dizzortion Effect.
Thanks a lot!
I there, I know it's been a while since you posted this, but I just discovered your video to discover I've got exactly the same set up (except that I own a A7SII and a FX6), and I've got a question : do you have vignetting with the 85mm when you are fully closed at f22 as I do ? Best
Really good video. One question -
With the right adapter, would you be able to attach the isco-optic filter to a lens like the Canon/nikon/tameron 70-200?
Yes, you will need some step rings to adapt them together but so long as the barrel end of the lens will not rotate during a focus pull is the biggest thing.
I have the Sony 50mm on aps-c do you think its necessary to buy a Helios 44-2 or can I just use the 50 without vignetting?
Hey, i have a question. I recently bought the same isco model you have but I don’t know how to detach the spherical element from the anamorphic, how did you achieve that?
what is the best anmorphic set up lens and lens for a sony a6500?
I think you need to make more anamorphic videos :)
Hi, please what kind of 1dapter u use to mout this lens to the sony a7 s ii?
So I wouldnt be able to use a Helios 44-2 58mm on a full frame without heavy vignettting?
instead of desqueezing you can stretch it, and it will not give you that rectangle on youtube. It will actually take up most the space on youtube and when you go fullscreen you will see the bars
Cool
I have a gh5 and new one of the firmware update has 16x9 markers available when shooting in anamorphic mode.My question is I don't have a external monitor can I still shoot in anamorphic and desqueeze in premiere
Yeah, when using the monitor it only is a display option. It won't code it into the file unless you shoot in an anamorphic format such as RED. I desqueeze everything in Premiere!
If you have to crop so much of the sides to get the 2.39:1 ratio then you should be able to use a taking lens with a wider focal length than 50mm on full frame mode. Also with the clear image zoom you should be able to get an open gate like super 35 fov for a true 2x anamorphic look using full frame mode. Can you please comment and confirm this?
I actually have the same set up, the side crop won't hide the vignetting of a Helios M 44 (58) if you open less than f11
I trying to get infinty focus on this SETUP:
Canon 7d - Takumar 120mm 2.8 - Vid Atlantic Clamp - Ishico Proskar 2x.
I get to focus ok on close and mid distance objects but not on infinity.
This is one video that went perfect on closer focus: instagram.com/p/BbQJuJcBN4Z/?taken-by=drunn
This one went wrong on focus at infinity: instagram.com/p/Bbls2G-BImy/?taken-by=drunn
What I could be doing wrong? Any ideas
You live in Portland
Amazing tutorial. I also have nikon ais/ai lenses and I would like to adapt them in anamorphic. Could I ask you the name of your anamorphic lens please? I would like also to ask you if the ring adapter has differente diameters for the anamorphic and dslr lens. I mean: you have to check the diameter of your lens and also the diameter of your anamorphic lens and buy the right ring adapter? Thank you very much and very compliment for the video
The aspect ratio you stated isn't quite correct.
4/3 = 1.333, multiply that 2x and it's 2.66 aspect ratio.
With a 16:9 aspect ratio you get... 16/9=1.777 x 2 = 3.5556.
Been shooting anamorphic for a while, still tons more to learn though.
Don't crop! Go 3.55:1! haha
Y d taking lens?
so many errors in this process, as mentioned in the comments, you have all the gear yet somehow the end image comes out looking like shit?
I suppose that art is relative to one's perspective 'shit' isn't very descriptive. If you mean that the squished image isn't quite up to standard or that scaling in is improper then I suppose the image is 'shit' but as far as educating people on the very basic terms of applying an anamorphic projector lens to a modern body and camera this isn't quite 'shit' instead is rather 'not fully informative'
Are you still using this scope? can I buy it? 🐸
I'm still using it!! But if you're looking for a quick solution VidAtlantic has the anamorphic filters that screw on the front element that I recommend!
What's the actual anamorphic lens? It's not mentioned
It's the ISCO 2x Anamorphic lens
Sry man, but you have to reimport the footage once you modify it, otherwise it will not change in the sequence.
Cinemascope does NOT equal anamorphic. That is misleading.
I beg to differ.
CinemaScope was the patented anamorphic film process which 20th Century Fox developed and
"The Robe" was the first commercial feature to be presented in CinemaScope in 1953, all shot with a single Bauch and Lombe anamorphic lens.
I only learned how to attach a lens what gives?
I decided to not go into that detail just because it really is a learn by doing sort of thing. But in my experience, I focus the anamorphic lens to roughly where my target is and then use the other lens for more accuracy.
I've had a lot of follow up questions in the past few months regarding anamorphic and have been thinking about doing a follow-up video in more detail. If you think that would be interesting let me know what more you would want to be covered!
Me trying to figure wtf was going on with the colors.
Says he's shooting on Sony.
Me "ah"
Cray McDaniel yeah it's even worse with a vintage lens and an anamorphic attached. That's my biggest issue with Sonys Alpha sensors ☹
