  • Sweden is a small country, but its military industry is one of the best in the world. Just remember the A26 electric submarine! But that's a topic for another video.
Today, we're going to be showing you the new Swedish fighter jet, which should curb Russian ardor in the Scandinavian region.

Typical sweden. The greatest country in earth in many ways i would say . Building their own military forces, their own cars, staging the best music festivals, great athletes. And everything in music...The list goes on. Can anyone image another country with higher density of worldclass band/artists than sweden? I bet not. And the swedes are a very Nice and polite people. The benefits of Gripen that you totally forgot: in case of war, the Gripen can be fixed way faster than any other fighter, loading missiles are also faster and it can take off and land in short roads.

I am by no means a Russian troll who does professional cheerleading here on the internet for all things Russian, but everything you just listed is maybe true if you compare Gripen with the Western jets but not the former Soviet/Russian jets. The whole former Soviet fighter jet program was based on the principle "cheap and good". And their war doctrine was designed for the defense of vast space of Mother Russia where their pilots are never too far from a friendly base since they are fighting on their turf. The Soviets knew that their planes could not compete with the Western electronics and all the high-tech stuff, but they could make them pretty close in quality and for much lesser of a price. So since the electronics and high-tech stuff is not as complicated their planes are also much easier to fix. I'm not exactly sure how fast are missiles loaded onto the Soviet/Russian planes but I can't imagine it being much slower than the Gripen. F-16 might be way better than MIG-21, but if there are 5 of MIG-21's and only one F-16 the odds would go in the Soviet favor, same with the MIG-29 & F-15 potential match up. Most Soviet/Russian planes can also take off and land from short roads and highways, and so can F-18 and specially the Harrier.

@@robertbauer3419 that rugged and ready design you talk about was always true for Swedish warplanes, and often more hype than reality for most (though not all) Soviet designs. They weren't modular the way Gripen is, I'm not sure but I don't think Russian planes are today. But then most fighters aren't.
If you don't care if you kill a few pilots and lose a few planes, sure you can operate any plane from a road for emergency. Gripen and Viggen before that was purpose built for this use. Big difference.

The Gripen can use the same missiles as the F-15 it’s not limited to the meteor.
The F-15 doesn’t have an advantedge because of combat experience - the pilotes and airoforce does. The Gripen has a faster turn around time and can land and take off from small roads. It’s also simpler to maintain in combat conditions.
It basically comes down to if you want 100 Gripen that can operate from roads or 70-75 F-15s that can fly a little faster and will need dedicated runways for the same cost.

All i heard is that the Meteor is superior to the AMRAAM. The Ramjet on the meteor can burn for much longer and even activate in the final approach. So the missle can accelerate and has more energy and speed when it is close to the target. Thats why it has a 50 km no escape zone and is verry difficult to dodge in this range for every fighterjet.
In the end this stuff is all clasified and not possible to predict wich is better but the ramjet is a feature that has a lot of benefits compared to a solid rocket booster wich burns for a short amount of time and then shuts off.

Comparing apples with pears.. For starters the F-16, F-15 and the JAS 39E are all good planes. The latest block F-16 may be cheaper to buy than the 39E and have a slightly better radar and is able to carry a bit more payload but with close to twice the operating cost per flight hour i'd go with the Gripen, beeing able to operate twice as many aircraft of similar capability for the the same cost is a no brainer. Comparing the 39E to the F-15 well.. They can both carry the same weapons but the F-15 can bring a lot more of them. The F-15 cost more and operationg cost per flight hour (due to the two engines) will keep at least 3 JAS in the air for the same price. Aditionally the 39 can carry the RBS 15 which is arguably the best anti shipping missile in world in that size cathegory. Last but not the least! Availbilty, the 39C (the predecessor of the 39E) has been at a couple of Red Flag excercises and have performed every sceduled flight while F-16's and F-15's have been sitting on the ground becuase of maintence issues or even weather conditions. And the electronic warfare suit of the 39E is really good and so is it's datalink, enabling it to fire from targeting data from a bundle of diffrent sources without using any active systems of it's own. Enough said :)

Ofcourse soviet had a much bigger airforce and army, but they can't throw all their recourses on us, if so they would leave their backdoor open for everyone else to attack them...
Our idea was that when soviet fleet convoys of invasionforces came over the baltic sea, our AJ 37 Viggen would go out and meet them at 10 meters over the sea flying att mach 1+ and just load antiship missiles on them... If they made it to Swedish waters, our coast artillery that was built deep into the the bedrock safe from nuclear bombs would open fire and sink the rest...

Swedish fighters have always had a distinctive and attractive appearance. But there is a good reason. With the tail wings, almost always seen at the rear of any plane, first in line before the main wings, it makes for very good common sense. When the plane is slowing, if the pilot starts to approach stall speed, the smaller wings by the jet intake will lose lift and the nose of the plane will start to dip. But the larger wings still have enough lift under the wings because of their greater lift capacity to maintain flight characteristics and warn the pilot to increase speed.

    • @charlesbranch4120
      @charlesbranch4120 2 года назад +2

Burt Rutan has extolled the great advantage of the canard aircraft in his designs Moving the horizontal stabilizer (and elevator) forward of the main wing makes that a surface generating lift upward to control pitch, whilst the tail-mounted horizontal stabilizer provides down force for pitch control. perhaps that's part of the reason we think the Piaggio (Ferrari) Avanti looks so cool sitting on the ramp as we're working in the hangar nearby. SAAB and the Flygvapnet have always stressed rapid turnaround and maintenance, besides operation from dispersed locations, big runways and bases being such attractive targets.

Quick maintenance turn around with smaller crews is another feature. Very low cost of operation is also of great importance to poorer nations. Most deployment missions are not intended for toe to toe combat and for those rare mortal combat roles, American made missiles work as well on a Gripen as the more powerful warplanes.

Are you joking? Sweden remained neutral in WWI and WWII and in was leaning more onto being friendly with Germany in both wars. Fact is much of the Nazi armored forces were manufactured using Swedish steel and wheel bearings. Sweden was neutral during the Cold War too. They have also sold artillery pieces to India which India uses to shell Pakistan villages with. So much for "support freedoms".
Also, understand this. No freedom can be won from war. Battles can be won but the only freedom is won by the people who believe in themselves, their system and their rights. And you can win these things *without war* . Ceaucescu the dictator of Romania was laughed out of power by his own people in 1989 even though he had held the country in terror for decades. Salazar the dictator of Portugal was simply abandoned by the Portuguese in 1974. He didn't bother to put up a fight because he knew nobody (not even the army) believed in him anymore.
You can also win a war but not get freedom.
No army in the world can make people in a occupied country give up their will for freedom.

Especialy When it came tonintelligense gathering. A lot of wht we piked up regarding German radi traffic and other medias bery swiftly ended up in either London or Washington. I'm a kiwi so I definitely aren't biased. Quality against quantity. Experienced and trained pilots, and a reserve pool of pilots and equipment regardless of cost will win any conflict. Sure in peacetime money talks but when it comes down to total war it all depends on availability of resources and the will to carry through. Obviously Russia and America does have a point or two in their favour. So on that note I would hope that our country would consider buying a couple of either aircraft. I like the Swedish fighter and the F15 and shocking the Mig 29... to replace the ones that we got rid of a while back. The Gripen is an aircraft that the swedish has worked on to bring it to this stage and I think it is none to soon as what is escalating over the border. They need to be ready though and bring them out of the shelters and give their pilots air time.

To be fair, if you compare the JAS Gripen to F15s, you really need to compare two Gripens to one F15 (or three to two, whatever the ratio of operating costs is). That's the reality of lower costs per hour. Russia subdued technologically superior Nazi Germany with plain numbers. Better tech only goes so far.

    • @metatechnologist

@@metatechnologist Of course that is the reason. NATO has enough Stealth, fifth gen capacity already to establish air superiority in any regional conflict. Once you have that you can pretty much fly a Cessna with a bomb anywhere, you really just need to bring the munition to the target. I was a bit surprised by this analysis, but I am assuming, that the fact that the host is a former F15 pilot skewed the arguments somewhat in favor of "always the best plane for any job". But even the best plane, or particularly the best plane, is useless in prolonged conflict when you are running out of resources. Just ask the Nazi Luftwaffe: they had the first fighter jets, but had to pull them to the runways with cows, and even ground them, because they were running out of fuel.

Typically aircraft functioning as aggressor aircraft in western air exercises are simulating Russian aircraft and as such are not employing western tactics or operating their aircraft and systems to their operational capabilities. They are tying to emulate Russian tactics and systems capabilities. So the fact that the F-15s suffered simulated kills cannot be used to derive any conclusions as to its capabilities versus the Saab. It is primarily a validation of the tactics, systems and doctrines employed against the aggressor forces.

I suspect that stealth in fighters will be less important in the future because of the progress in drone technology. Drones that accompany a fighter can themselves be stealthy and fly in advance of their larger companion. Perhaps they could gather intelligence and relay it back to their control platform, the fighter. Or they can be armed with missiles that could be used to attack radar bases that would pose a threat to the less stealthy fighter. I'd guess distributing stealth among the smaller drones would be easier to do than engineering an entire fighter to contain all missiles, guns and so forth internally. If I'm right, then we can expect future generations of fighters to devote less tech to stealth, which seems counterintuitive at first; but expect these generations to be released together with stealthy drones.
