It is, but let's not get carried away. The facts here are that the Gotland Class submarine uses an ultra silent propulsion method to avoid cavitation in comparison to other diesel submarines. It's a fun story to think about how a smaller nation like Sweden could sink the mighty nuclear carriers of the United States. But that's all it is. The war game that's talked about was when a Swedish carrier was put in the perfect situation to attack the Reagan: - It had predetermined knowledge of where the carrier would be operating - It was able to attack a ship that was not traveling at its top speed, and therefore was able to keep pace - War games do not take into account countermeasures or weapon system failures The entire point of this story is to foolishly undermine the US Navy. In reality, the Swedish submarine would have no idea where the Reagan is. It doesn't have fuel to be wandering around the oceans for weeks hunting for it. And United States Carriers rarely travel at speeds with which the Gotland can match speed without cavitation occurring. None of these factors mean anything anyways because Sweden is an ally to the United States, no other country has such capable submarines besides the United States and their Seawolf class submarines. Let me ask you something: If it were as easy to sink American Carriers by just making stealthy submarines, why hasn't China kicked the United States out of the Pacific by now? Why does Russia refuse to challenge the United States for the seas? It's because it's not that simple. United States nuclear carriers are the most powerful and well protected weapons of war in the world, and every single Admiral, General and defense member would not argue that. It's an interesting story though, nonetheless. I've just seen it dozens of times now because it's easy to get views with making videos on this topic.

Outmatches everyone in Red Flag and Loyal Arrow air force wargames and now we have the best equipped sea vessels to take out the largest navy on the planet.
I remember that we were told one thing while I was in the Navy, "It doesn't matter how many defenses you have, if the enemy launches enough missiles or torpedoes, a few are bound to go through". That's not what happened here of course, this was a precision attack, but it's just a saying to show us that nothing is invincible and that assumptions and cockiness cost lives and ships.

The biggest deterrant is Corona virus. It is a stealth killer. The Roosevelt carrier has been taken out by the virus. The Chinese is being degraded by the stealth virus
Problem is any time we've intentionally tried to sink a carrier ourselves it has been much harder than expected. So a wargame "Kill shot" is much different than a real life shot from a sub.
@@DurzoBlunts well, inevitably, the methods used to 'simulate' attacks don't account for all variables. for instance, air-to-air missiles in real conflict have a pretty poor track record, but how do you accurately simulate how the real weapons and defenses function in a wargame where actually firing at the target is off limits? There's limits and factors that cannot be accounted for by any test that doesn't follow through on the actual attack. You can of course, try computer simulations, but that presents a different variation of the same problem - the simulation is only as accurate as the data it's based on, and almost never perfectly reflects reality...

Nuclear submarines can't be detected either, it's been that way for decades. I'm sure this video makes all this technology seem new and cutting edge but stealth submarines aren't new. The thing that makes this submarine design unique is that it's not nuclear powered and can be produced cheap in comparison to nuclear subs.
@@Bitchslapper316 nuclear subs are always more loud than diesel electric boats, the only class that sort of circumvented the problem is the russian Typhoon class, only one of which is operational at this moment. they used a naturally circulating water system for their powerplant, meaning that most of the pumps could be shut-down at low speeds, meaning you only hear the screw blades and the electric engines.
@@arjentromp12 The typhoon class is 45 years old and was the largest submarine class ever built, modern submarines have adapted similar technologies. I’m thinking it’s best to have your vulnerabilities exposed early so you learn to defend them - I'm sure this is a good thing in the long run (thank goodness we have friends like Sweden as well!)
This vessel is actually a good example of the Swedish way of doing things. We are a small nation in size, so we compensate lack of numbers with very high levels of technology and science. We dont build ten things, we build one that does the job of ten.
Jokes aside, maintenance and durability is so to speak "scienced the shit out of", and that gives Swedish equipment cheap and long usage. The Swedish SAAB 39 Gripen fighter jet cost about 4800$ per flight hour, while only the fuel costs of the eurofighter Tycoon is about 18K. And American planes are ranging from 11-35K in maintenance
You might want to actually listen to the vid and try to think a little. These subs have very limited capabilities. Then again, the Sweds don't need much.
As a former submariner ( USS Flasher SSN613, 1977-81 ) I’m not surprised a modern Swedish submarine can ambush a carrier. We’d get very close to aircraft carriers. Non-nuclear submarines are more quiet than the boat I served on.
@@lostinspacestudio non-nuclear subs don't have a turbine in them but nuclear have an infinite range comparatively well only limited by human consumables

@@lostinspacestudio Nuclear subs and ships have machinery that has to continuously run because of the reactor. Diesel subs can shut everything off to become noiseless. The three rounds you were talking about were against Norwegian pilots. Now lets be fair. The Gripen A version which was what the article was talking about, is even with some and better than most of the fighters of its era. Meaning these were planes with 80s and 90s tech. The Gripen E is comparable to the F35 and Sweden themselves say it possibly isn't quite as good, most of which has to do with the stealth technology that the F35 and F22 have which the Gripen does not have.

People often dismiss diesel-electric subs as some WW2 relic. That couldn't be farther from the truth. The reason nuclear subs are generally 'better' is mostly due to the fact that they tend to have newer components. A well designed diesel-electric sub with the newest technology is just as good as a nuclear-powered one. In fact, since a nuclear reactor cannot be easily shut down, modern diesel-electrics are actually significantly quieter than nuclear subs. So if you only want to use your subs defensively, diesel-electric is very much the better choice. Add in the fact that a nuclear sub still has to replenish supplies for the crew on a regular basis, which significantly negates its main strength of infinite range, it's very reasonable that everyone is investing in diesel-electrics again.
For a blue water centered navy (USN) nuclear is the way to go. Supplies can be replenished at sea, in a small port overseas or large port at home. The gotland excels at defending its nations home watets, what it was designed for. Nuclear subs are for long extended duration missions. They'll stay under the waves longer than a diesel can for air before needing supplies only. 111 days is a long time without needing to surface. Nuclear reactors dont need to be shut down for very quiet running... They shut down cooling pumps under no speed or very slow speed and let natural convection current of water cool the reactor. Thus allowing them to disappear into the noise of the ocean.
@@DurzoBlunts I thought that even with no pumps working, nuclear reactors will vibrate unless shut down completely, and as such still be more noisy then a non-nuclear submarine can be. The Swedish sub as most likely a diesel electric submarine that can indeed be very stealthy. I was stationed aboard the USS HADDO SSN604 and the only time we were ever detected when stalking a CVN was when we were spotted by a helicopter due to the extremely clear water in the Caribbean. Exercises such as the one high lighted in this video are extremely valuable in the development of both technology and ASW tactics. One possible correction to the video is that surface craft use ACTIVE sonar, that is the rely on the sonar “returns” or pings to echo locate an intruding submarine. The efficiency of active sonar is somewhat mitigated by “Own Ship’s Noise” which is proportional to the speed of that ship. However, my information is somewhat dated and I suspect that sonar technology has changed in the intervening years.

Surprising? No! During war games an Australian Oberon class sub penetrated a carrier battle group,(simulated) sunk the Carrier, resupply ship, 3 destroyers. The only reason that the US Navy knew that losses had been taken was that after every shot a flare had to be launched by the sub. This was back in the early 90s.

Some other folks have commented on wargames vs real life, so that's a dead horse. But here's another: The white "low-side" AAR will reflect what the US Navy wants to release. In this case, a sub penetrated our picket and sank our carrier. This can be done as impetus to tighten up SOPs TTPs etc. Or nefariously, try and convince Congress that more money is needed to secure the fleet. The black "high-side" AAR reflects a total different result and data set. You (RUclipsrs and this Channel) will never know if the task force spotted it or not. The absolute margins of capabilities are closely held state secrets. Similar to the actual top speed of the SR-71 which is still classified decades after its decommissioning. So take whatever you read about these claims with a grain of salt. It is in no one's best interest, if they work for the US Navy, DOD, or US R&D to EVER tell you what they can and can't detect, and what they can and can't do.
As a son of a man who have been on submarines for years as a profession in Sweden.. Yeah they don't get spotted. Check the games with the Russians as well for answers.

Or maybe it was all one big false flag in an attempt to convince our adversary's to pursue this sub's technology to their detriment. Who knows?
Frank Hoy, i'm with you on this. If the U.S. Navy is leaking the tactical capabilities and weaknesses of its primary platform for projecting power, it has much bigger issues than losing a war game with Sweden. Your suggestion regarding budgetary increases is very plausible, but I also see a possibility that a video like this is part of a global disinformation campaign, a "false flag" sort of thing.
@@natskivna Oh it is true, in the open seas and oceans diesel-electric subs are fairly useless against even conventional powered aircraft carriers, let alone nuclear ones. At least half a dozen navies have scored hits during wargames against the US navy, including their carriers, that's nothing new. What a lot of people seem to forget is that it isn't just the qualities of the subs which make them so stealthy and efficient, but that the superior tactics used by their captains is what really turns them into such incredibly powerfull naval weapons.

I served in the U.S. Navy as a Sonarman 3rd class on the U.S.S. Greenling, SSN-614. She was a formidable ship, but the Gotland class could have killed her without beaking a sweat as she is that quiet. Trust me. You don't want to go up against one of these Swedish boats.
In two years the next generation of this Swedish submarine is delivered to Swedish deference. The Saab A26 is something extra. Very cheap for a sub, much longer distance and even more quiet. Connected with the fighter jets and surveillance system also made by the same company. US military is one of the largest customers, and only country in war that Sweden sells this technology to.
John - It's as if Sweden is selling them to Sweden, because in the 1800's, 1/2 of the population of Sweden came to the US. That's when my Swedish ancestors immigrated here. Times were hard in Sweden and rich oligarchs owned most of the land, and most people were like slaves to them. At that time, the US government wanted to settle the midwestern US land, so they gave the railroad millions of acres to develop the land. The railroads went to Sweden and offered people land that the railroad financed with no money down. The poor people in Sweden moved to the US and had large farms in the midwest.
Jim Jackle Yes, very fascinating. I’ve been to Ellie’s island where all the Swedes (and all other Europeans) disembarked. Many heartbreaking stories on the walls. There are movies and books about the families that made the journey over the sea, what they left behind and what they got when arrived. Can’t imagine it’s so much easier today, just jump in an airplane and fly back a few days later. The first 50 years of 1900 was really a raise in standard for Sweden, coming from a poor country with not much food, to one of the highest standard in the world. Of course much thanks to the politicians that managed to stay “neutral” during both world wars. But as late as 1970 there were still used outhouses in central Stockholm capital and houses without running water. A weird thought. An apartment in the same house today costs 20 years of salary.
And unlike the Gotland who can only be underwater for about 7 days like most diesel-electric subs of it's time, The A26 will be able to be underwater for 18 days. And there is an option to add a tomahawk module.

Why is that you would think that nuclear would be quieter?
@@lostinspacestudio non-nuclear subs don't have a turbine in them but nuclear have an infinite range comparatively well only limited by human consumables
Christian Hogue ... Diesel Electric non-nuc boats are quieter when operating on batteries. Nuc boats as I was on had steam turbines and seawater pumps operating. Electric motor propulsion operating off off a battery are quiet in comparison. However nuc boats have much greater endurance over diesel-electric boats. I left submarines before the newer AIP boats were operating. I can’t speak on those.
@@lostinspacestudio Nuclear subs and ships have machinery that has to continuously run because of the reactor. Diesel subs can shut everything off to become noiseless.

@@markj2093 Yes, pumps can be loud but not always. Even a passively cooled reactor can create noise from bubbles or flow through the coolant lines. I was mostly thinking of (diesel) electric subs.

All of that and managing to remain undetected and unharmed while getting away scott free. Brutal....
Who would win.
A top of the line navy technology and an entire escort group.
One Ikea Sub.
The Imperium of man, under the leadership of the God-Emperror.
Underrated
The top of the line technology. Which wasn’t allowed to be used during this war game.
Never underestimate IKEA 🤣
Once I was talking to my friend about the Us equipment and how good it is.He replied:"US has the best best equipment until a war happens".
The classic biblical tail of David vs Goliath. Well done Sweden 🇸🇪. God bless America 🇺🇸 and Long Live The Republic!
When we all realize that all ships are still steam ships.
No, only nuclear ones. Most ships use diesel or diesel-electric
lol
“It was shipped back in a mobile dry dock”. They literally tore it apart no doubt haha. BLOODY good thing this was a training exercise. Our American brothers obviously learnt how to mitigate this specific threat. I think this shows the priceless value of these exercises well done guys
Zr Ms Walrus, a submarine of the Dutch navy did something similar back in 1999. It 'sunk' Aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt and 8 escort ships during exercise JTFEX 99-1
Alex Postma correct.
When you realize that the IKEA approved submarines are sinking your entire fleet of aircraft carriers....
Did this man seriously just say “unfortunately didn’t result in any financial or human life” 😬
Fortunately
And fortunately
...he did, but put it in a respective context, ..it seems the USN outwardly/publicly learned little since it didn't cost lives or money that would force a more visible change or adoptment of certain technicalities. ..Likely the US has some semi-burried greyer than black program spawned from this.
That is not saying it should have or didn't. The sub was loaned with an additional 12 month extension, thats going to have cost something somehow, somewhere from the US to Sweden, and or with a reduction or write off of WW2 or Coldwar debt, or someother exigence of classified deal to do so.
No worries, it only would have been Americans, no losses either way.
Adrian Klein - Thank you Xbox warrior!
US Navy Captain: Any report?
US Navy guy: Sir, everything is normal, but our sonar guys are hearing a boss music...
Surprising?
I can't wait for the day when they make USS Donald Trump
ReXwa sir we detected a US supercarrier.... oh wait no, the radar sais it’s fake news. Never mind.
The USS Donald trump is just gunna be the largest McDonalds in the U.S.
Like Trump, itd try to call in bone spurs so it didnt have to fight. itd sit around the dock all day. judging others. and lie about what its done, even say its done things that other carriers have done. Then itll get slat armor skirts around its hull and say its keeping out all the foreign navys. Then itll try to commission the first spacecraft to launch off its deck, only to flop. like the Space Force. Itd go out and do alot of War Games instead of actually doing its fucking job to protect the citizens of the US. even when a hurricane runs through Florida and Porto Rico.
Then will hold back all aid and medical supplies when those US citizens need them, saying that the surplus stockpile on the ship is only for the crewmen.
i think it will happen because:
3 of USA's aircraft carriers are named after Republicans who led USA into a recession = Ronald Reagan, Gerald Ford, George H W Bush
Trump is also a Republican who has led USA into a recession
1 carrier's named after John C. Stennis = a senator "a zealous supporter of racial segregation"
Trump's similar in that he wants a wall + he told some Americans of colour to go back to the "rat-infested countries that they came from"
1 carrier's named after Carl Vinson = a congressman "influential in the 20th century expansion of the US Navy"
Trump pledged that he would expand the navy too but
" The Pentagon on Thursday slashed billions of dollars in funding for 17 Navy and Air Force aircraft and other military programs to free up money for the construction of President Donald Trump’s long-sought U.S.-Mexico border wall, angering not just Democrats but also GOP defense hawks."
5 are named after historic Presidents:
associated with WW2 = Eisenhower, Truman
on Mount Rushmore = Theodore Roosevelt, Lincoln, Washington
@Craig Hondo his name is carlos so ofc hes gonna be mad...
I wish to comment that since the inception of Dark Docs, the videos have been consistently great, and in my observation, becoming steadily better.
Also, I very much like the narrator's voice; his delivery incites within me a sense of suspense and mystery, and my preference for this over the Dark 5 read-only content cannot be overstated.
Finally, I have been favorably impressed with the selection of topics.
I hope that you will keep this great channel going.

The Swedish army is so underrated
Aug? Lol, no, it's generally a pile of gender fluid garbage. I served in the FDF and for us the Swedish army is a total joke. We could beat them all in 1-2 days and Finland is a smaller country by almost half. The Swedish navy is a different deal, and likely better than ours by quite a bit, but their army is almost worse than no army at all.
US Navy : Haha,Super Carrier go Brrr
Gotland : I'm about to end this man's whole Carrier
Exactly what I was thinking ... We don't know many things here to make a conclusion
As a son of a man who have been on submarines for years as a profession in Sweden.. Yeah they don't get spotted. Check the games with the Russians as well for answers.
Imagine how destabilizing this is if true. Yeah, your 13 billion dollar floating airfield is obsolete..... Something tells me that if true, then new anti sub tactics have been figured out by now.
However in the coastal areas for which they were meant, diesel electrics pretty much rule supreme, and especially those build by Japan, Sweden, Denmark, the Netherlands and Germany.
The crew must've felt so tense as it snuck through and then super pimps after doing what they just did
"super stealth" = A normal, less complicated, diesel engine submarine built in the 90s.
my brother showed me this video without watching the whole thing and thought that Sweden and the US were actually at war and I've already seen this video and told him ww3 has started, that was 2 hours ago and he's still looking for information bout it, he's also 12
Well done Sweden. There always room for improvement.
I thought my playback speed was messed up at first..
The Aussie submariners are renowned for doing this.
Made by Kockums (SAAB).
Jim Jackle
Yes, very fascinating.
John Eriksson - Thank you for the information. Like the old saying goes, we learn something new everyday.
And unlike the Gotland who can only be underwater for about 7 days like most diesel-electric subs of it's time, The A26 will be able to be underwater for 18 days. And there is an option to add a tomahawk module.
Mr. Hemlig
Extra tomahawk module, is that another 18 days submerged?
_Ahh yes!!! Perfect on a Saturday at lunchtime._
Australian, British and French submarines have also all successfully “sunk” US aircraft carriers during war games.
John Smith oh yeah? Well the Canadian submarines do even better, they sink themselves before they get very far outta port! Thats a libtard govt "derelict Brit sub purchase" outcome for ya.
But that gives us a 100% success rating....
@@bsc4344
I mean that was because the Canadians crewing the vessel back to Canada left both the bridge chamber hatches open and flooded the sub with over 2,000 litres of sea water, which subsequently started a fire. The sub was also running on the surface in seas rough enough to damage the Irish Destroyer responding to its mayday call.
@Till This Day
They actually often come out and describe the findings of these sorts of games. In 2012 an Astute under trial went head to head against the USS New Mexico during the Fellowship exercise, her commanding officer described the crew of the New Mexico as being "taken aback, blown away with what they were seeing" by Astute's capabilities. "Our sonar is fantastic and I have never before experienced holding a submarine at the range we were holding USS New Mexico."
The german u24 did it to
Friendly fire! friendly fire! 😂
in real life, swedish submarine kills US Aircraft Carrier, 1 hour later swedish capital city has the shape of a mushroom cloud.
True lol
LOL I GET IT
I think the point might be we need to do a better job with carrier contingents lol. Because we should be worried about bigger adversaries than sweden.
"The Americans never saw it coming, and never saw it leave" who they will bomb?
Hahahahahahahhaa
I was a submariner back in the day and this is very normal in war games.
Cool, I was a Commander officer. We used AC-130's. Had some nuclears back in the days.
We are proud of our submarines in Sweden :) Top of the line!
Great engineering! Educating your people pays off. Short sighted republican asshats in America have forgotten that. We had low cost or free education after the war and it gave us a cohort of engineers who won the space race and jump started the computer revolution. Then republicans thought they would get rid of the freeloading socialists and we imported lots of engineers from China and other countries. That's how China got to steal our trade secrets. Republicans love cheap, foreign labor. Trump sure did at his resorts. Asshats!
this goes to tells that there are only two types of ships in the ocean, Subs and targets.
”Russia, America’s eternal advercery has ordered two diesel electric attack submarines, scheduled for completion by 2022” 😳😬
Wow I had no idea... to be capable of evading detection by not only Surface ASW units, but also the aerial and U.W. ASW picket defenses.... wow.... that's friggin IMPRESSIVE!!!
Great video. Love it. Keep them coming!!!
Sweden: Hahaaa gotchu!
USA: i don't wanna play this game anymore
same in the 90's with Germany ^^
Last time I saw a submarine launched cliff hanger was at the end of Ace Combat 5
You obviously haven't got the DLC for the Ace combat with the submarine Alicorn
@@nuclearTANK I have, but there was no cliffhanger since I sunk it. Besides Alicorn never sunk a carrier, just yeeted a nuclear shell at Hoffnug
@@BusterBuizel exactly it yeeted a nuke
@@nuclearTANK But, it's not a cliffhanger since the story got wrapped up.
You mean Scinfaxi aircraft carrier sub?
Expensive bigmac boi ship with airplanes or
A viking boi.
Seems like the us carrier strike groups aren't as invincible as they think lmao. A german submarine managed to get a torpedo on CVN-65 and made a nice picture during JTFEX 01-2. The Americans were shocked when the sub emerged right next to them. The American admiral is said to have been absolutely furious lmao
Edit: They did the same thing in 2007 again
Edit 2: Another class 206 submarine circled an american Los Angeles class hunter submarine several times at a short distance without them noticing.
That happens more than people think. A carrier goes out to sea for war games, the sub attached to the battlegroup will routinely make mock attacks against the carrier, and they do sink the carrier. It's called practice.
Ah Swedes!!! Great fighter planes, great subs and OPETH!!! Thank you Sweden
