I'll die on the hill of Agricola love. As long as you draft the starting hands, I love the "extremely" tight work placement game. Amazing game if you love tight strategy.

I think a lot of the people on the Agricola side primarily love the cards, including learning which cards are considered good. I like Agricola's tightness, and I also like Terraforming Mars, but I don't really like either with a bunch of expansions, where 90% of the game ends up being trying to wrap your mind around what cards are out there.

    • @RaduStanculescu
      @RaduStanculescu Год назад +1

@@indef2def I feel like the advantage with Agricola is that it's one draft at the start, you see many of the cards that others will get, and can figure out some of the cards that might have based on their actions (or at least the classes of cards), so once the draft is done you won't have new things interfering with the gameplay.
That said, I do love TMars as well, but for me that one's more of a feel-good game, while Agricola is quite the opposite, so I don't consider them that comparable.

I gotta disagree, as someone who loves both Star Realms and Shards of Infinity. Star Realms plays so smoothly and is a really fast game, while Shards is a slightly deeper but much slower game. I would argue they are two different experiences, not because they’re not the same genre (and even mostly the same mechanics), but by when you might want to play them. Star Realms is a game I play with my wife when I have twenty minutes and want to play something. Shards we tend to play when we want that meatier experience.
Edit: To clarify, I know you said Star Realms is more accessible and to get it if you just want something simpler, but I would argue having both in your collection is a great idea.

Avalon is far better than Quest, since it deletes all the information around voting and adds a lot of roles that just create randomness, so it kills much of the deduction part of a social deduction games. Avalon does need more people for its best play so maybe Quest wins at smaller player counts, but overall Avalon continues to deliver memorable playing experiences in our game group in a way that Quest just doesn't.

    • @xclement1
      @xclement1 Год назад

I absolutely agree. Avalon is so much more interesting when it comes to player reading and deduction. In quest the added roles and mechanisms make it more of a puzzle game. Instead of trying read the players, everyone is trying to math the game. Avalon and resistance above quest any day.

Isle of Cats has my favorite card drafting. Taking 2 cards a turn instead of 1 for better synergies and also making a decision later on to pay for the cards or not (thus making hate drafting easier) is so satisfying. The different types of cards you can draft is really nice. Do I want to draft a end game scoring card or baskets to play more cat tiles? Really fun card drafting. After trying 2 card draft in this and Ohanami, it's really hard to go back to 1 card draft like 7 Wonders, Sushi Go, Draftosaurus (meeples not cards).

Blitzkrieg! felt that you wanted to some of the special tiles and also you could play in to several theaters at once, and may have to depending on what you draw.

That was a fun video! I do disagree with the Isle of Cats comparison in that I would rather play the original game but both options do it well. For the most part I play Explore and Draw as a solo option and the original game as my multiplayer option. I've often wondered if I would like Caverna. Agricola just didn't work for me but there was a lot about it that I like. Recently got Cave vs Cave in a Game Nerdz DOTD and hope to try it soon. Interesting what you said about Azul. The first three in the series are very similar to each other, but Queen’s Garden changes the formula quite a lot, even the trademark Azul tile drafting mechanism that the other three share. It’s also a bit crunchier. I wouldn’t compare it to vanilla Azul because they’re different experiences altogether and seem tailored for different audiences. Shared DNA, perhaps, but not directly comparable. I do like Queen’s Garden the best, but of the three similar ones in the series, I’d choose Stained Glass of Sintra because its punishing negative points make your decisions more interesting (and Summer Pavilion is neat but too easy).
Of the pairs of games you mentioned, I more or less agree with the ones that I’ve played, but to be fair, most of them I haven’t played yet.
Everyone seems to have their “Splendor killer”, and for some reason, for a lot of people, that’s Century: Spice Road, even though the two games have very little in common. 🤷‍♂️ I’d personally suggest Gizmos as a replacement for Splendor. Both games have tokens that you use to buy cards, but Gizmos doesn’t have the token-hogging problem because the tokens are randomly dispensed (in a gumball machine!). Both have the ability to reserve cards from the deck, but in Gizmos you can earn the ability to look at more cards and get what you want. Both games may give you discounts on future cards, but Gizmos also adds extremely satisfying action combos. 😀 Gizmos isn’t significantly more complex, but it adds so much flavour and life to Splendor without taking away any of the good parts. It’s like Splendor++! 🙂
    Thanks for the video!

Agricola is so much better than Caverna. In Agricola everyone has essentially the same goals, you're all trying to do at least moderately well at all of the of the 6 or so scoring categories (fields, pastures, animals, crops, house, family) - although you know you can't do quite everything so some things will be focused more than others. Then you have the cards, which allows you to come up with a plan right from the start of the game on how you're going to try to execute these goals, all while moving tactically to take advantage of things your opponents have left, or opportunities to stop them getting exactly what they want. This leads to a tense and engaging puzzle of a game every time. Caverna is much more open, you can largely ignore what other people are doing, you really don't need to worry about being over specialised in one area so much. You might as well just be playing a solo game.

Nice comparisons. Made me take a look at my own collection, seeing where i have "upgraded" and where i likely still own both...I REALLY need to get better at selling / trading the games which are just not going to hit the table often enough (or EVER).
    Where i have played both.
Cats : i prefer the original (marginally), perhaps mostly because i like the tactile feedback of the tiles
    Caverna: Agreed.
Framework: Not sure which i like more, Nova Luna or Framework. Need to play Framework a few more times, but I can see edging out Nova Luna.
Brass: dont have a clear favorite. Insufficient data points.
Others i have played one of but not both. I have played Terra Mystica and liked it, but having seen a play through of Gaia Project, i am anxious to get to try that some day and fully expect to prefer it to the original.

So much of your list I agree with great video. The only one I vehemently disagree with is Caverna as a replacement for Agricola. They are both two massively different games in both how they play, and the meta that can form around them from repeated plays. As a reviewer I’m sure it’s difficult for you two get a lengthy non campaign game to the table 20-30 times so that’s understandable but I can definitely assure you they are so different. It’s more of a personal preference tbh so while for you and others Caverna might be preferred I don’t see it as a replacement .in fact I’d say Feast for Odin is more of a Caverna replacement than Caverna an Agricola replacement.

Pretty interesting. I agree with your picks that I know except maybe Caverna. For gamers who are used to dwarves in various fantasy genres and having the extra choices, it makes sense but for newcomers who come from monopoly or shy away from anything having elves or dwarves, that theme doesn't work for them and Agricola has more of a general appeal. I think it depends on your game group. I picked up 'Welcome to the Moon' as my first flip and write, so I am happy to see I did alright there :-)

Sagrada is a lackluster "mosaic-making game" compared with the tightness of the masterpiece (at 2p only) Azul, but in it's other dimension, as a "score by multiple patterns of die assignment game", it's completely obliterated by Roll Player, which has many more interesting decisions and a clever theme that fits most of the card mechanics.

Great topic. I agree that I like Caverna better than Agricola, but I don't think it quite replaces it. Agricola is definitely easier to teach and more accessible. You basically have to teach Agricola plus another full system to learn Caverna, so while I like Caverna better and would rather play it, I wouldn't quite say it replaces it until your game group has played one, or both. If your game group is willing to take on the bigger front-load of Caverna, then congratulations though!
As for Isle of Cats, I'm curious if you've played the family mode? We much prefer that way because the full drafting mode just drags out the game, which I'm guessing is related to why you don't like drafting in the game. The family mode takes all the fun and removes the extras and makes it into a fun, lightweight game that can be taught in minutes. I'm looking forward to trying out explore and draw sometime, but my kids really enjoy all the cat illustrations from the full game, so I'm not sure it'll land the same for us.

I own both Brass games and love them both, I don't think one replaces the other. While Birmingham improves on luck factor, there is so much space on the board that it doesn't feel nearly as tightly competitive as Lancashire does, most notably when playing at 2 players. Lancashire is far and away the better 2-player battle, while Birmingham really shines and is probably my 3rd favourite at 3+ players. I'll also add that the "luck" component of Lancashire comes from the distant market, which is something that can be avoided or taken advantage of from a strategic perspective as there is a direct way of avoiding its usage (building ports). I think both games have their place, which is a huge testament to Wallace's skill as a designer!

I liked Caesar, I think it’s a good game, but Blitzkrieg for me personally is like, a top 10 tier game, I can just play it over and over. I also love teaching it, it’s such an easy teach while Caesar has some extra stuff going on that I don’t always enjoy as much. I do like the theme for Caesar more, I generally abhor modern war themes, but both games are so abstracted it doesn’t really bother me. I would say for me Blitzkrieg is a 10/10 and Caesar is maybe an 8/10. If someone asked if they should buy Caesar I’d say absolutely, it’s a great game, but Blitzkrieg is always the one I’d reach for.

Of the pairs on this list that I've played both games, I agree completely, although, honestly, for most of these pairings, I've only played one or the other, so my agreement probably means a lot less 😜
Slightly off topic, but I'm always confused as to why everyone insists that the title of "Welcome to Your Perfect Home" is only "Welcome to..." and yet the other two "Welcome to..." games are always referred to with the whole name. (with the exception of calling "Welcome to New Las Vegas" just "Welcome to Las Vegas" and forgetting the "New" part). I know that "Welcome to Your Perfect Home" was the first in the series, but that doesn't mean the whole title wasn't always on the box. In fact, the "to" part is even in the same little title box as the "Your Perfect Home" part, so I would think, if anything, it would have been shortened to just "Welcome..." 😂

Awesome list! I can’t actually speak to any comparison directly just because I haven’t had the opportunity to play both games in any one pairing, but they definitely fall in line with my suspicions or what I have heard from others.
If I were to add to the list, I would say Wrath of the Lich King replaced traditional Pandemic for me as it seems to just add more excitement, engagement, and replayability than the original. The new Star Wars one looks interesting, but I’m not a huge Pandemic fan as it is and I’m happy with WoW so I don’t really have any desire to try any others.
Underwater Cities replaced Terraforming Mars as it just does the same thing more simply and is more personal. It’s not just building something just to build it. What you build becomes part of your own private engine. I just feel like the mechanics flow better.
With that last one I chuckle at myself for the fact that Terraforming Mars Ares Expedition has replaced Race for the Galaxy for me. (To be honest, while many would disagree with me, I actually feel like Ares replaced the original TM for me as well.) RftG just feels like a point grabbing card game. While Ares is technically the same in the end, I feel like there is more substance and excitement during the ride with the different resources and card effects. Plus RftG was death-by-iconography. Ares doesn’t have nearly as many symbols in that it doesn’t need page after page of explanations, and if there WAS any confusion, there is text on the card that explains it. All in all it is much easier to get to the table and is more enjoyable.
The last one for me is Rise of Tribes over Settlers of Catan. Catan was fun originally but after awhile it started to get frustrating as I would play games where I consistently had empty turn after empty turn with no resources coming to me despite the fact that I would have both 6s and/or 8s while weird numbers like 3s, 4s, and 12s would be rolled over and over. While I admit that the dice mechanic in Rise of Tribes is kind of odd, I like it much better than the dice mechanic in Catan since you always get something on your turn. You may not always get what you really want, but at least you don’t get turns where you have no resources and so just can’t do anything. Plus the base game comes with optional modules to play with to change up the game play, including slightly asymmetric player abilities. I feel like Rise of Tribes is the game that Catan tried to be.
One other game that I personally want to add to this list intuitively is an older combination which may not necessarily be a straight trade off versus just a “play this not that” type of comparison, which is why Rise of Tribes was my “last” game on the list, but if you want to count it I would also add Specter Ops replacing Scotland Yard. Again, I don’t know if this would be a direct replacement so much as one hidden movement game versus another, but to me I feel like Specter Ops was designed specifically to go against Scotland Yard. That said, I used to have Scotland Yard and I got rid of it once I got Specter Ops. I think Specter Ops does the same thing that Scotland Yard does but better. The transportation ticket tiles in Scotland Yard always felt odd to me thematically. Mechanically it worked, but if you really thought about using a taxi ticket versus bus ticket and the timing and everything, it just felt a little forced into the theme. With Specter Ops I felt like the mechanics were designed to flow into the theme, plus the added powers really makes the game more exciting and replayable without making it too hard. That was the other issue with Scotland Yard was that I felt that playing a detective was crazy hard whereas it isn’t as hard in Specter Ops to play the hunters. I WILL say that it CAN be hard to play the agent in Specter Ops, but I still like it way more than Scotland Yard and have no desire to play that one.

I wouldn't say shards of infinity replaces star realms for me. I love the leveling mechanic in shards of infinity but i find the balance of cards off personally in the game, like your buying power on your last turn is often less than double what you had on your first turn where as star realms often gives you thee or four times your starting money by the end and its that growth that makes a deckbuilder. if there was a standalone expansion to infinity I'd happily reevaluate. hero realms would be my safe replacement but Ausonia is my preferd decbuilder, its not got many extra rules but is so much more thinky and feels tighter as you start with a deck of gems but as you get read of these gems and other cards they become perminant use cards so you clear your deck of money, have access to more money on a turn and have all your cards to combo.

The big box now only has one role - giving my wife and I a fun draft and resource management version of that smaller game.
On Welcome to the Moon: absolutely fantastic game and packs so much in a small box
Agricola vs Caverna: I feel Argicola is the more euro version of Food Chain Magnate. It's brutal in all the right ways. That's absolutely not a casual gamer sort of title so it depends on what you want out of your game. Caverna is the one where the deep understanding of the game doesn't guarantee dominance. Other than being area control games based on mythology, there's not similar. Rising Sun is action selection using tiles with a follow mechanism with a hidden bidding/bluffing combat resolution. Ankh has action selection using a shared track with a focus on controlling buildings with combat that's resolved with a set deck of cards.
Additionally, Rising Sun has an alliance focused design where players can team-up for a season. Ankh has a forced alliance late in the game where the two players with the lowest score get merged into a single entity (forced alliance). Blood Rage has no rules for alliances.

@@VaultBoy13 I really don't find it that clunky. The problems with the main game are:
Downtime in combat/diplomacy when not your turn.
Time spent grinding to ignite menhirs or simply stay alive. The latter I'm unsure how to fix as it is fundamentally a survival game.
Time spent wondering around without direction, particularly if you have travelled a long way and your only leads are far away.
This said I find the grind to stay alive much better than 7th continent. The combat themselves can be risky but generally it is slowly losing all resources that I fear most. It is tedious at times to regain these resources but it isn't too time consuming (though hunting events should be snappy).
A lot of this could be fixed by fast travel to previously explored locations and a bit of refining of the combat system.
I also don't feel a choose your own adventure book is a bad thing if you know that is what you're getting and the story and options are well written. And the writing and story has engaged me so far. It's certainly better than other games that try to tell a story.

One of my friends said that after playing Gaia Project, he hated it - and he would just much rather play Terra Mystica; Jamey Stegmaier prefers Terra Mystica - even though I mentioned to him that I think Gaia Project is objectively the better game...
In both cases, the space-themed version came out after the fantasy- themed game, and so the designers learned from their previous game's experience and feedback.
Also, another example I like to use is Among The Stars vs Fields of Green.
Fields of Green is the sequel to Among The Stars, in which they changed the "build your spaceship" theme into a farming-themed game - in which they added some extra layers to the gameplay.
However, ironically, in this case - I actually prefer the space-themed game in this case. I had really enjoyed the idea of building out your spaceship (which is different than just moving around in space) - and they had changed it into just a farming (which I am meh on - I don't have much opinions on it)-themed game. I definitely preferred Among The Stars. I felt like it was very fitting that that was the theme. It just made sense - for the mechanics and what you were doing in the game - drafting out those cards.
I am just trying to give some perspective - that theme matters... And this is coming from someone who is a mechanics first person - but I can recognize that games are a mesh between the 2.
