- Side-by-side POV video taken at Thunderhill Raceway - an epic lap battle between the automatic-transmission G80-chassis BMW M3 Competition and the manual-transmission 6-speed G82 BMW M4.
Both brand-new BMWs from the press fleet, factory tires.
*LAPTIME DISPLAYED IS CORRECT - though I swapped the graphics at the end*
Thunderhill Raceway Park - West (2-mile)
2021 BMW M4 6-speed (G82) 1:21.51
2021 BMW M3 Competition (G80) 1:22.12
Driven by SCCA Hall of Fame inductee Randy Pobst. Same day, immediately after one another.
Randy's colorful commentary thanks to bad transmission programming. 🤣
Laptimes recorded for Hagerty's "Jason Cammisa on the ICONS" series:

Wonder if throwing the auto into the sport gate would remedy Randy’s hairpin downshift frustration 🤣
Sadly not. It refused to downshift even in manual mode on a subsequent lap.
ZF slushbox is sht in manual mode that's why.
Manual > ZF all day long. Just the because the fun factor alone.
The manual is a ZF too :p
@@bengriffin5146 you know what he's talking about right. The zf torque box. Ik the manual is also a zf 6 speed
@jason your end credit is switched. Manual car was on the right, Comp car was on the left.
battle of ugliness
So the 6 speed is faster?
Impressive driving as always from Randy
But how did your lap times compare??? 🤣
The final score is misplaced, right?
I never realized you filmed these episodes in Thunderhill! Hope to run into you sometime!
Amazing driving by Randy as always
i was wondering why the comp was slower than the manual. something's up with the software on that thing.
More behind the scenes uploads please Jason!
Auto is best, not contest. Simply because i can do similar lap times to a professional driver with a manual, while enjoying the scenery and having fun, relaxed.... Sorry, but i am not a pro, i am a regular Joe, so automatic transmission all day for me.
Funny and surprising to hear Randy getting that frustrated. Obviously the auto wasn't cooperating but was part of the difference due to the M4 being lighter? I don't know the numbers on either chassis.
They're roughly the same weight 🤷♂️
@@JasonCammisa Right on.
@@JasonCammisa m4 is 5 kgs lighter. If I am not sitting in it.
Did you switch the view in the end? M4 on the left?
Nope, just the text is swapped.
Oh wow first 2 uploads in years
jason do you think this car is better than the f80. As a aspiring car designer, I think the f80 is probably the most beautiful car after the e30 in that it doesnt have any visual weight to it and has a very menacing bulldog stance. I love those headlights too
As a car, the G80 is vastly superior to the F80. (The G20 is a far better car than the F30; overall.) In design? Absolutely not. The G20 isn't bad looking (the G80's grille is poorly integrated into the rest of the design) but it's derivative and non-destinctive in its details. The F30 was a great design. I'll give it that.
@@JasonCammisa what about the f30 335i manual. I'm kinda into that. But Ik you'll give me every reason not to be🤣🤣.Nvm jason, i own a mk5 gti 6 speed and its more than fun enough
@@JasonCammisa but what I'm seeing with each succesive generation of the 3 series is the continued effort to make it a c class. And I don't think that works because then m3 becomes a c63 competitor, except c63 sounds like thunder but has completely different goals. I think if audi are clever enough to make the next rs5 a longitudinal 5 cylinder(using the 2.5 from the ttrs) and a mild hybrid system, it might be the best. Because i hate the way the m3 farts, and the c63 doesn't exactly make music either. But 5 cylinders.......oh yes.1
@@thehumanoid6543 Keey your Mk5. It's a far better car than that miserable F30. Remember: that is a car that so structurally compromised because of cost-cutting that M flat-out refused to make an M3 out of it until BMW reengineered the front structure. That became the LCI model, and it was a Band-Aid on a gushing bullet wound. Add the horrendous reliability record, and I wouldn't trade a Mk5 GTI for an F30 if you gave it to me plus a huge check. And a free mechanic on call.
@@JasonCammisa yeah i know the f30's front structure is like stuck together with glue. I read somewhere that m refused to build an m3, so the 3 series got the 4 series convertible's front subframe. What do you think about e36's. I think a late model e36 m3 with the manual and the s50b32, which sounds better than the chainsaw of an s54, is a good m3. Also, your favorite m cars?Mine would be the e36 m3 and a late model 1995 e34 m5 touring(they made one) with the 6 speed manual, the basically race car engine with more torque 3.8 s38b38 and a gorgeous wagon body. Special mention to e30 325ix wagon too
I've watched your test of the G80 for second time and discovered this video....did you discuss with Randy if he could improve the time of the competition using the manual mode?
Sadly he could not. It seems it wasn't a gear-selection issue as much as a gear engagement issue: meaning the transmission would refuse to perform the downshift regardless of whether he manually requested it.
Someone ate my lunch!
Anyone know what tires these cars are on? Looks like slicks judging by the entry speeds?
OEM tires, these are BMW NA media vehicles. Michelin Pilot Sport 4S.
Randy living his best.
Juissone Cammosse
Should’ve used the paddles smh
2 tens or so C'mon kidding me all day ZF auto M3 comp you should invest it towards. racing driver - racing track and all labor you do with your arm and leg while you owning fun to logic factor ratio absolute joke... just saying.. all the best ..
Pal , whatever you do just make it engaging, you ve just made a good video boring. And what s with the 1 sec time showing the results?? I needed to go back 3 times to see it. If you have a voice, talk.
Okay, soooo uhhhmmm, this video is a supplement to another video. I think you'll agree I took care of that issue: ruclips.net/video/u3EiY7sQWr4/видео.html
