    What I like about this is that you can bring along a "passenger" who can have his own independent head tracking. This could not only be useful for recreation, but search and rescue as well. Four eyes are better than two.

      I'm building one of these single axis setups now but would love to figure this out. More like a professional camera drone where the camera is piloted by a second controller. I'm wondering how this would be done. As i think about it, you could just have those 3 channels on a second TX, buddy boxed, or trainer ported into the original tx.

    Dude I've been thinking about this too! I bought an Arduino BLE Nano that I could hook up for head tracking pretty easily, tested only with PC games so far though (another cool use feature of the free software out there).
    I've been trying to work out if running a "passenger" VTX would work. A whole second DJI Caddx Vista setup and GoPro with smooth 360deg head tracking, bottom-mounted to a larger explorer drone (6inch+ I guess). The passenger/camera operator would have some of the coolest views looking down while you cruise them around.

    Since the DJI FPV drone has a single axis gimble, do you think it would be possible to connect the head tracking to that somehow?

  • @Alf-Dee
    @Alf-Dee 2 года назад

    A bit convoluted, but maybe useful, idea:
    Use head tracking for the tilt than push a button to lock the tilt, and transfer the angle control to an “automated mode” that use FC gyro data to keep the same camera angle.
    This way when doing backward shots you can maintain the same angle without neck aches or without loosing the video link behind walls.
    The subsequent application of an automatic leveling using the FC Gyro would be to use a lightweight AR hardware (maybe magic leap does light enough stuff) and use automated human subject tracking.
    Maybe It would be too heavy for a cinewhoop, but for a cinelifter maybe not.
    (Well I’m an AR Software engineer, and now I have an higher purpose in my life, let’s do it 😂😎🤞)

    Keep practicing! It gets more natural as you get used to it. It took me 15ish packs before I really got into the groove of it.
    One of my favorite moves is to fly full speed at the subject and come to a dead stop, then fly backwards all while maintaining the framing of the subject. it takes some practice to synchronize your head tilt and finger movements but becomes second nature eventually.
    I want to explore adding a second axis to allow for pan and well as tilt, because i find myself trying to turn my head left/right to look in that direction, I noticed Winston trying to do that once or twice in this video, lol.

  • @djbis
    @djbis 2 года назад +3

    so tricky to fly like this. In addition to the normal but very high spatial awareness needed to fly FPV, you now have to be able to use your head in a completely separate way, while your hands remain steady flying just like normal. Not being able to properly keep track of what the two things are doing will mess with altitude and angles. It really is a whole mind-f*ck of a piloting trick. But Nurk pretty much nailed it already, proving once again that he is from another planet and is determined to showing us mere mortals how deep the FPV hobby can go. 👍🏼👍🏼

    Here’s an idea for a video: Try to wire the head tracking receive into the FC so you can fly the drone by looking around, all you have to control is the throttle from the normal rc controller.

    I think what would make a head tracker top notch is a VTX that interfaces with a 360 camera and the flight controller, transmitting only a small FOV of the 360 camera, but changing that FOV with your head tracker input from the FC/RX.

    To be honest, that was really fun to watch. My wife an I had literally just had a talk about head tracking an fpv yesterday. We both wondered what it would be like an could be useful for when flying fpv.
    Awesome 👍 just awesome! Great video, fun And informative.

    What you need is a permanent frame of reference to know exactly where you are looking in relation to the position of the aircraft. I can see this being accomplished by either placing a physical plastic bubble with tic marks over the top of the camera or developing a software overlay that moves with the camera. If you could adapt the same camera gimbal to the quadcopter that you have on the fixed wing, you could literally fly it like a fighter pilot, watching exactly where you'd be flying, and hovering with your viewpoint horizontal rather than just looking up at an angle.

    I wonder about using 360 camera, then the head tracking gets recorded as a suggested framing. Using head tracking (and some reframing), the flight could look less mechanistic and more natural, like looking into the turns before making them. Or, tracking objects of interest independent of the flight path.

    For use on a drone, using an OSD horizon indicator might be helpful, of course, that eliminates DJI with their limited OSD.

    WTF, epic! I can't wait for you to use this on a shot on a job. Would be sooooo scary and epic to fly with a RED. Leave it to Nurk to make a two opp drone and fly it single pilot.

    I would want this to transition from faster to slower flying. plus for maintaining position during high flying where I wouldn't normally be able to see the ground. To just hover around, scope things out and line up some free falling descents would be a lot of fun. seems cool but I think it would be enough to just have a switch to go from, say high upward tilt, low tilt, and downward tilt. And it would keep things less nauseating probably.

    Man, I wish the DJI fpv drone had this integrated. They would just need the head tracker and that would be legit

    When I got started I was getting serious motion sickness with quad fpv. Got a headtracker and mixed pitch, roll and yaw from the headtracker into the sticks. Could literally fly the drone with head movements just needed throttle on the sticks, no more motion sickness. Over time reduced the mix until I was just on sticks.

    Is it possible to use a 360 camera and have the head tracking reframe the shot? Insta 360 one r can live stream and reframe

  • @frogsshadow4189

    would it be easier to use a 360 camera and then set up a virtual camera that streams the view of where the head tracked view point is going to? though it would probably require a lot more bandwidth

    most f7 have enough uarts for this setup 2 diffrent rxs ep2rx 2 seprate vtx and gymbal servo so you can get the full rotate pan and tilt fov footage while the other pilot can focus on getting the shots and try make the second pilot sick lol

    Gotta appreciate how good you both are as pilots. For you two to both have a take away of wonder and newly challenged to fly like a real pilot would actually in the cockpit. Humbling and exciting VR
