Living in Georgia, you hear about St. Simon's a whole lot, but not because of its origin story or the horrible gentrification of the island. But because it has turned into a huge tourist destination. Knowing about what's happening to the people who actually live there would just hinder the boujee white people's ability to relax by the beach. It's just another example of oppression in the US that is entirely ignored by the masses. Can't tell you how many people I know who posted their little black square on social media to then the next day post a selfie at St. Simon's or another similarly affected area.
look I'll just say what no one is thinking... maybe someone is. but I always think about it. whenever I see any one of the jazzy/funky/bluesy/soul/jam bands featured on KEXP, they seem to be overwhelmingly composed of white dudes. which is fine and great and whatever. but also why aren't there more black dudes making this kind of music? it seems like black artists are totally outnumbered within the kinds of genres that they basically invented. except for rap and hip hop, obviously...
LazyLion Appreciate your observations... It’s not that there are NOT Black bands doing the kind of thing you described, it’s that there’s an extension of a ‘prejudice’ regarding the KIND OF MUSIC Black musicians are EXPECTED/‘PERMITTED’ to play by industry (marketing) minds, and other, (essentially racist), fear-based attitudes.
