    I chose not to touch on the final twist regarding Nish's Mother because I genuinely thought it was really stupid that she was in there all along. It ruins any form of independence Nish had and just seemed like a very unnecesary aspect to include. It also seems weird that she possesses a technology that CLEARLY had more negatives than positives, and yet was somehow convinced that putting Mum in there would be a good idea? I thought she was supposed to be smart!

      Also didn't she say the mother overdosed on pills from the grief of seeing her husband in the chair ? Does that mean you can transfer the consciousness from a dead person or maybe she managed to transfer the data just before she died and if the mother did kill herself what makes us believe she would want to live on inside her daughter ? Seems very stupid to have it in alright , great analysis btw keep it up

    • @vingram100
      @vingram100 6 лет назад +101

      That’s a good point, but doesn’t that make it scarier? The pain and damage from her father’s wrongful treatment prevented her from having any independence until she killed Rolo Haynes whom she never met but is obligated to have an vendetta against due to the pain and injustice that her parents went through. It had nothing to do with her and yet she ended up a murderer in the end, unlike her father. Her mom being in her head actually gave me an existential crisis when I first saw it. Like Killmonger and Nish, that’s what it feels like to be young and black. Should I devote my life to avenging injustice or move on and be happy? Nish can’t, there’s always something there to remind her!

    I'm going to choose to believe Nish transfered Carrie to either the cloud or a BRB style robot after taking her out of the museum.
    Also I wouldn't call Carrie a souvenir for Nish. You failed to mention that Nish's mother was inside her head the whole time, presumably to see justice for her husband (I highly doubt anyone would want their mom inside them forever and am fairly sure her mother lives in the cloud most of time and this was an exception.) Carrie was also a victim of Rolo and deserved Justice just as much as Nish and Nish's mother
    And remember when Rolo wakes up we see Nish placed Carrie in a position where she see what was happening too, even getting a close up of her monkey staring at him as he gets electricuted. Once they leave the building she gave Nish a thank you in the only way she could by saying monkey loves you.
    If anything Nish is Carrie's rescuer. And as I mentioned before I highly doubt Nish would keep her in that monkey for long. If she can transfer Rolo, into Clay's hologram, she can get Carrie into a better vessel it would be far easier.

Pretty horrific when you think about it though. She would have been better off just dying in her original body, because her fate was worse than death.

      I, personally, hated the analysis. He seems to have completely missed the allegories of catharsis running all up and down this episode. Yes, the title was a reference to the show itself, but not as a nod to Easter Eggs, but as to how the show questions what it is.

      No shit her fate was worse than death lol. I thought Carrie's story was the most horrific part of the episode because isolation is one of the absolute worst things that can happen to humans. Not to mention that she can see other people but they would have no idea she exists, and she can't communicate at all with them. And she can't kill herself either, so she's stuck like that. And Rolo said they have to be able to communicate at least 5 different emotions, not just say things.

      They literally talk about cookies from White Christmas, which has a technological progression from tech shown in previous Black Mirror episodes. It's not just an Easter egg. It's a plot point.
      Why are so many people so against the "shared universe" thing anyway? Then it would be like any other show. Them all being completely separate universes is the more weird thing to do. And as long as they don't go too overboard with it, and try to do their own MCU crossover mashup thing, then I don't see what the big deal is. It rewards viewers who watch all of the episodes in order, but it's not like it disrupts people who just watch singular episodes.

    Out of all the stories, Carrie and the monkey absolutely have the most potential in more ideas for the series. Just like how cookies were introduced and are just kind of a 'thing' now. Some unholy meshing of that consciousness-transfer and (maybe a beta version of) the MASS system would be goddamn brilliant, probably ending up with people in ecstasy comas, too unwilling to exit game.
    I for one love the theory that all the episodes/seasons share a universe, and it's my opinion that they're one full timeline, just dated out of order - probably with Metalhead at the very end, bc of, y'know, robo-doge apocalypse. If not that, then parallel universes at least. If there's another episode that basically throws humanity/survival down the drain, then that kind of fucks that up.
    But something like San Junipero being a wholly North/Central/South American thing and the system in 15 Mil. being something in a European or Asian regime (for examples) is also possible, since we're given pretty much no context of country as well as time period.

      A pretty terrible theory actually, the existence of the museum to begin with makes it's destruction/the symbolism of it's destruction irrelevant within the theory. By that logic you could just say that at one point it was a shared universe, with the museum being symbolic of that.

      @akshay Viswambharan I disagree. I think in the context of the show they are implying that the prisoner actually has feelings and actually experiences the electrocution every time as if he were alive. The same with the key chains. Of course, as I said it's sci-fi so can be interpreted however you like.

    This episode did annoy me. It seemed as though everything that happened to the woman in the coma was designed specifically to make her existence as painful and dehumanizing as possible, with no regard for practicality, logic or empathy. Even today we have machines that can be controlled through the brain, and her brain was already digital. It makes no sense that they would have put her inside a stuffed toy with no agency besides two preset phrases, when they could have given her a robotic body she could have moved and spoken through. There's no way a stuffed toy was the pinnacle of medical and robotic technology.
    The one redeeming thing in the episode was the pain doctor story. It was outlandish and disturbing and it had some great dark humour, but importantly it was believable. Years ago I thought it would be neat if a doctor could inhabit the body of his patients for a moment to more accurately diagnose their symptoms. If this story was made into a full episode it would have been my favourite of the season.

    I feel as if the scenes where people pull the lever at the museum weren't real, but a sick, twisted version of what Rolo thinks people reacted like when they did such an act of cruelty, think about it, how many people do you know would actually enjoy themselves and smile as a man screams, suffering the most horrible of pain as they slowly realize they were the ones to cause it? Only a minority of people like that exist in this planet.

    • @WitchLunaEstrella
      @WitchLunaEstrella 4 года назад +1

      I dunno, with the way some places on the internet get, I can believe people could rationalize their way into enjoying it. Reasons like "he deserves it" and "it's just a copy, not the real thing". I mean, this episode takes place in the same timeline as the Justice Park so it seems that there was a time when that society was pretty into cruel and unusual punishments.

  • @rosskitson8545

    The finale of Black Museum wasn't just about people's sadistic obsession with execution, it was specifically about America's sadistic obsession with black suffering. Often black men who were lynched weren't even given a trial; people would give their kids the day off school, the bodies were also usually burned and mutilated and people would even take pictures and send postcards to relatives. Generally even when a white man was sentenced to death his body would be treated with some respect, the local preacher would make sure of it. Black bodies on the other hand were a vehicle for white hatred, people took pleasure in seeing the person suffer. That's why they emphasise the fact that Rolo and others don't care if there were doubts about the trial or the evidence; because they just want to see a black man suffer. (See also, Trump's reaction to the central park five and his refusal to apologise for his comments even after they were found innocent.)

    I'm glad you touched on the digital divide between generations in relation to Nish's tech savvy-ness! Personally I preferred Black Mirror as a set of unrelated installments a la twilight zone because I feel like it gave the writer(s) way more free range in terms of creative approaches to the ways human nature and impulse can be shaped by tools and tech. While I'm very interested in the exploration of consciousness the writers are now going for, I worry that the focus will be less oriented towards creating compelling narratives about hypothetical (and real) technologies/how they relate to humanity in exchange for over-produced attempts to tie everything together.

    The whole ‘transfer a dead/comatose loved one’s consciousness into your brain’ thing had an uncanny resemblance to Karl Pilkington’s film pitch starring “Clive Warren” but when Carrie was put in that monkey it really depressed me to see how they completely dehumanised her, just to make myself feel better I like to think that after Nish avenged her dad, she uploaded Carrie to San Junipero (or a similar virtual world) so she finally has peace. I also found the ‘pain addict’ story intriguing and honestly wished it was a full-length episode to itself, that self-harming scene was REALLY hard to watch.

    It’s been heavily implied in the other episodes of the show that BM is in a shared universe, so getting the confirmation in Black Museum was great! Rolo definitely serves as a devil/demon-like entity in the episode, but when he starts helping Neo-Nazis and sadists get their fix, you can tell that even he was really uncomfortable with what they were doing, and by extension, his enabling of this behavior. Nish was also an interesting enough character, whose tech prowess is fully explored in Black Panther, a direct series tie-in ;)

    • @KookiesNolly
      @KookiesNolly 6 лет назад +1

      Anthony Gonzalez it’s not about a shared universe. Black museum is a metaphor for the show itself. We, the audience, are the visitors, who love watching others (the characters) suffer because it causes a catharsis inside us. I mean read your comment again. You are literally happy that all those devices that were mostly used to hurt people exist in one universe. You are thrilled by the stories of people’s suffering and like many others binge watch it. You just distance yourself from it by thinking « it’s just fiction » but still... this episode also comments on the purpose of black mirror itself. That’s rather dark when you think about it.
      So many people miss this, which makes it pretty ironic and funny in a dark way.
      This video misses it as well and just basically summarizes the episode.

    Thank you! One of the things that bothered me a little about this episode was the conflation and confusion of cookies and transferred consciousness. They're treated like the same thing in this episode even though previous episodes like San Junipero and USS Callister portray them as separate concepts.
    If they really are just cookies though, that does add a somewhat dark and depressing underlayer to San Junipero. These people are being sold an afterlife, but it's not them that gets to experience it despite that being how they're being told it works. It's the false pretences that are troubling in my perspective since they're choosing to die early because they're under the impression that only their body is dying. To me, it'd be a bit less grim if they were being outright told that it was just a copy since I've sort of come to terms with the idea of iterations of myself living on even if it's not my current consciousness that experiences it, but I'm willing to accept that's possibly a niche opinion.

And ultimately he will will repeat this each season. I know it sounds dumb written down on here but it sounded cool in my head lol
