My story. When i was training to be an architect I had a pratice that i DREAMED of working for. I even had a picture of the practice logo that i stuck up near my bed for manifestation purposes. I applied to the practice multiple times and never got a job. 1 day i received an email from them. I asssumed it was another rejection but then i opened it and it was from the director themself! They said "dear hanna, im writing to you because you father has writted to me...!!" I was currently unemployed it was the recession and my dad was so upset for me he had got the details from my bedroom and written to the director asking for them to give me a chance. Very sweet and also CRINGE! I went to the interview and got the job. I then processed to completely self sabotage as i felt like an imposter and everyone knew how i got there. I was fired within 3 monts. On my last day as i was packing up my stuff (in a deathly silent office) my earphones fell out my ipad and it blared out snoop dog, move b***h get out the way. MORTIFYING. Lesson: Believe in yourself and don't let your dad interfere with your career. 😅

@@furrylittlepeach definitely! Just happens when you’ve both heard each other tell stories again and again, sometimes it’s like “wait this part won’t make ANY sense unless you add this”. As long as it doesn’t bother them (which it clearly doesn’t!) then I don’t see the problem 🤷🏻‍♀️

My cringiest moment was actually in college, doesn’t really apply to IRL work, but it’s a good story. Stefan Sagmeister was a speaker at our college and I was so excited. I saw his talk and left so inspired. Next day I was one of a handful of students selected to go an in person thing with him. Out of the blue he starts talking about a students work he saw hanging up of a magazine. I’m think okay cool…and as he keeps talking he says it has these peaches and they are drawn … jt dawns on me he’s talking about MY piece. He’s telling everyone how UGLY this piece is and how this person has no creativity. And what they should have done is gone to a pool and filled it with peaches and photographed it. I’m becoming more and more embarrassed and my teacher who KNOWS he’s also talking about my piece is also there. I felt horrible about myself for ages, until it dawned on me that even if he hated it, my piece stuck with him enough to be remembered. 😅

If the only way he can make his point is to drag someone else’s work I’m thinking he needs to turn his critical eye on himself and ask himself why he is so lazy in his presentation/instruction style. There are ways to criticise work without demeaning someone…

Okay so I started this video and had to pause to take my children to swim lessons. At the end of the lesson as I was getting them together I slipped and fell into the pool in front of all the other parents! 😂 luckily I saved my toddler from falling in, but I was mortified. I got back in the car to recoup and listened to the rest of the stories as we drove home and they had me laughing so hard! The next one I heard was Rocket falling in the hole and it made me feel better so much faster! 😂😂😂 a thank you for sharing!

My like first year into freelancing, I was contacted by a local magazine to do some illustrations for a magazine after I met one of the owners at a market. They asked me for my rate, and having never done something like that before, I googled the rates for doing magazine work. I quoted them something WAAAAAAAAY higher than their budget and definitely more than warranted the project. I ended up having to back track ask their budget to keep the job. It was reeeeaally embarassing. Moral of the story is don't be the first person to throw out a number if you can help it, unless you are trying to scare a client off.
Thanks for sharing your cringe stories and about your avoiding a big connection. I've been struggling with a similar issue recently and feeling pretty down about myself and my career, so it's really great to hear!

My most cringe work story actually started my career. When I was 17 working as a housekeeper the company I worked for hired a design agency to rebrand - I decided that it wasn’t good enough and sent my own work to the director of the company. Bare in mind I had no previous experience in art outside of drawing still life at school let alone graphic design or branding. On reflection my proposed rebrand was obviously awful, but at the time I fully believed in it. Believe it or not they didn’t use my rebrand but they did give me a job working in their marketing department which led me to get my degree and start working in graphic design. Honestly it makes me cringe to think about how confident I was that my work was better than what they had paid for, I also found out a few years later that members of the team had been laughing at my work when I sent it 🙈 (honestly I don’t blame them). Ultimately though I’m so happy I pursued graphics and it’s my favourite thing to do now, if I hadn’t made a bit of a fool of myself I wouldn’t be doing what I do now. 🙌🏼

  • @lumorias
    @lumorias Год назад +5

I'm a graphic designer and when I was in my second year of uni, I interned in the marketing dept of a company that has just rebranded. They had hired a well-known designer to do their new logo and brand identity and he sent me the new logo file to use (I needed it quickly for a piece so he had yet to package up all of the different file types). Anywho I opened up the file and because I was a brand new baby designer, I didn't know that the typography in logos was supposed to be outlined. He forgot to do that, so when I opened the file it said I was missing the font. I thought I was being awesome in fixing the problem and so I called him to ask if could send over the font files. He was FURIOUS and yelled at me and told me not to touch the logo - he thought I was messing it up on purpose. He apologized the next day when he discovered he had sent the wrong file so cringe moment for both of us!

My cringe moment when I worked customer service: I was going to school full time had two jobs and was particularly sleep deprived/stressed one day. I was working alone at peak lunch rush hour when a customer excitedly ordered the last cupcake. I was in autopilot mode so I quickly packaged up their cupcake and went to throw my gloves in the trash. BUT instead of the gloves I threw the cupcake container into the trash like Michael Jordan where it busted open and made a horrible noise. The lady looked at me like I kicked a puppy. I apologized profusely but I think she thought it was malicious. I felt so bad!

loved this!! it was so cute seeing sha'an so excited about rocket's stories. i hope you do more long form/podcast-y videos like this.
my somewhat cringey story happened a few months ago. i was starting a summer job and had picked one of two training days from a scheduling form that the director had sent. i thought it was a little weird that the form was set for eastern standard time (EST) instead of central standard time (CST), which my state uses. i didn't think about it too hard because i'm used to switching/using EST since my friends and past jobs were located in the east coast. i (and my coworkers) filled this form out about 2 weeks in advance to the actual training.
i usually like to arrive early to any kind of scheduled meeting (mostly because of anxiety, haha). on the day of my training, i got there about 15 minutes early. now, this center has 2 buildings. i have NO IDEA where i'm going because i haven't been there before. i just know that i'm supposed to go into "studio 1" or something like that. i walked into a building that's called "studio school" because that seems like the most logical answer. i walked in and saw a receptionist.
i asked them, "hi, sorry, is the training going to happen?"
"um, i don't think so. no one told me about any training." they look super confused. i don't blame them, haha! i did get really anxious when they said that though. i was so worried that i had arrived the wrong day. that's, like, one of my worst anxiety-fueled fears.
"oh...well, the email said to meet at studio 1." i pulled out my phone to show them the email.
"studio 1? ohhh that isn't in here. that's in the other building."
and at this point, i am absolutely flustered. it's been a while since my last in-person job, and i feel so awkward and a little embarrassed that i don't know where i'm going. it's like one of those moments when you feel like everyone is looking at you, even though no one actually cares.
i walked across the (dead-end) road that separates the two buildings in the heat, stressing about how red i get when i get warm. i'm panting by the time i make it to the other building because i'm speed walking. i'm worried that i'm gonna be late and look all red and sweaty. not a good first impression, especially professionally.
i see the director talking to someone at the front desk once i make it inside. i hang out, awkwardly sipping my water while i wait for them to finish talking to this other person because i'm STILL not sure what room i'm supposed to be in and whether it's okay for me to wander around this building or not. there's really nothing to look at in this lobby area, but i was doing my best to pretend that those white walls were the most interesting thing i'd seen in my life. (this is a contemporary building, all white and grays and steel, lots of open space + glass; not a super welcoming vibe tbh) i'm awkwardly standing around because i'm not sure what else i could do?? i didn't want to interrupt anyone's conversation
after a few minutes, i finally get the chance to talk to the director; this is the first time we're meeting in-person. and then they tell me: the time zone on the form was wrong, and i'm an hour early for this training. an hour!!!! i felt my soul leave my body
director told me that others pointed it out to them, and that they meant to send an email out about it (they had not before i got there :/). i was mortified. i didn't have a car that i could sit in while i waited. i felt like one of those kids that comes into the classroom too early, and it's just them and the teacher @@
i had to sit in the empty studio room mostly by myself while the director popped in and out while they prepped for the training. i couldn't bring myself to make conversation because i felt so embarrassed + i didn't want to get in the way while they prepped. i didn't even pack my headphones with me since i wasn't expecting to have downtime. i listened to pump up the jam quietly whenever the director left the room to try not to succumb to my embarrassment/awkwardness. i was pretending so hard that i didn't exist in that moment
i know it's not a big deal, but it felt so awkward with this being my first experience back to in-person work!!! lesson: don't be afraid to ask questions when you're not 100% sure about something. good employers will be happy that you're willing to ask questions. and don't forget to pack your headphones/earbuds.
shorter story: i was going in for an interview at a college library. the campus wasn't big at all, but the buildings were right next to each other. i checked the map to find the building the library was in because i *thought* the interview would be there. you'll notice that i have a trend of getting lost and not knowing where i'm supposed to be.
i walked into the building the lib is in and walk upstairs bc the lib covers the top 2 floors. i'm trying to find the conference room the interview is supposed to take place in. i'm wandering around the 3rd floor, absolutely lost because i can't find the conference room on the floor map, and i'm getting uncomfortably close to actually being late. i stop someone who looks like they work there and ask them where the conference room was. they tell me i'm in the wrong building ;-; the wrong building like an absolute dummy!!!!
i was RACING to get to the right building (being careful on the stairs though, i've sprained my ankle on stairs thrice now). it's the middle of summer, and it gets HOT where i live (26 c and up). i arrived to this interview out of breath, sweaty, and so, very red. the interviewers, of course, are a little concerned for me. i TRIP getting into the chair because i didn't realize that it had wheels on it!! i was honestly so relieved that i made it in time that i didn't think about trying to get into the chair elegantly. the chair (and i) rolled across the floor a bit because i just PLOPPED myself into it (or tried). the chair almost rolled out from under me. it was so embarrassing. i think seeing that, the interviewers realized that i needed a mo' to get myself together lol
in that same interview, i was trying to take notes but my pen was OUT OF INK. i didn't want to look like i suddenly didn't want to take notes because they were talking abt scheduling, so i just kept PRETENDING TO WRITE AAA i was HOPING, PRAYING EVEN that they wouldn't notice that there wasn't a single word written on my paper
lesson: idk look at maps more closely?? i swear i'm not usually this direction-challenged, but for some reason when it's work-related, i have the hardest time finding where i'm supposed to be. truthfully, i think this moment really solidified my need to be early. be early so that you have time to run around like a headless chicken if you need to
i hope anyone who read this enjoyed!! buh-bye!!

Really loved how you shared your stories in such a vulnerable manner! However (and I say this as a longtime fan of you, Shaan!) I felt that you could have given Rocket a bit more airtime to tell his stories without cutting in all the time and interrupting his speech. I felt bad for rocket e.g. when you burst in to say "and then you cried!" when he was sharing his worst experience shooting for a client at a red carpet event, and then rocket kinda said something like "well yeah now we got to the end of the story". etc.

I loved this so much! It reminded me of once we were shooting for a custard advert, we did an MTV styled theme where we would visit peoples fridges to see what they have with their custard. The once scene was a wanna be rapper and we shot in a student accommodation. When we got there the client decided to join us as they were the transport for the cast. When we got there it was so disgusting there were cockroaches all over the place. If was like Joes apartment the movie! We tried our best to get the cast and client out to do a coffee run while we did our best to rid the space of the cockroaches. Definitely one of the worst video shoots I have been on and the quickest we managed to clean and dress a scene ever! We will never use student accommodation ever again! luckily the client and cast has no idea what really went into that day.

Okay I’m late to this but here goes. I am a graphic designer from a relatively small town in South Dakota. I had an interview in a bigger town about an hour away and I was super nervous just to even drive there and find my way, not to mention the interview itself. I arrived (way before google maps or GPS) and thought the building seemed odd for an advertising agency. I got my giant portfolio out of the car and went in and it looked like a … retail store with VERY inappropriate things for sale! I told the guy at the counter (again, ???) that I was here for the interview. He looked at me and started to laugh out loud. Which seemed rude until I realized I was not in fact at Media One, the place where I was supposed to interview, but Studio One, the local PORN SHOP. 😂

I have many cringe moments in my life. basically I am shy and really tried to overcome that, so I often made bad decisions when socialising. But a huge cringe moment that I had put out of my mind for 50 years now 😳came back to me after watching this video. I was 16, and had my first job (this was the 70's) and because I all I wanted to do was art I dropped out of College (Art School was too expensive for my parents) and enrolled in a typing and shorthand course. So my first job was an assistant typist/secretary to the Head of the Atomic Centre in Pakistan. One day, I was the only one there and got called in to take a letter from the Head guy, and it had to be written in shorthand because thaose were the times. Shorthand was a different written language completely. So I could write in shorthand but had major trouble reading it (obviously I had a learning disability, but who knew about that then). I typed up the letter as best as I could and just left blanks where I couldn't read the words and handed it in. I told the Boss, sorry, I missed a few words. What else could I say?!!!! OMG! Anyway, the main Secretary had to have a chat with me and I told him I had trouble reading the shorthand, He could read it mostly and helped re-type the letter. Thankfully I didn't get fired, the Boss was a kindly old guy of 70 or so ( like I am almost that age now myself) but I still blush and get anxiety thinking of that. I bet no-one can top that story! 🤣 Also a great long hilarious chat!

For my portrait drawing class in university, the midterm project was a self portrait. During class critique, my professor was trying to explain how to tell when you've nailed the composition and likeness. He used mine as an example and said, "Just look at Beth's. Whenever I see it, I'm just so attacked to it!" Class went dead silent, and I quietly went, "awwwwkward." We all errupted into laughter and my professor found a different way to word what he was trying to say. 😂

Tiger sharks are my FAVOURITE so I excitedly whipped out my camera and only realised my flash was still on when I had already blinded the poor shark and scared her away 😭 I was so mortified I felt so bad for the shark and everyone turned to look at me and pointed at the no flash photography sign. I loved the long chat! This was great, especially as a 24 yr old starting in my career. It’s good to know confidence will come with experience. My cringe is being rude to my superior because I got some bad advice from a coworker/mentor. I was inexperienced and didn’t understand that she was unhappy with work and told me to do something she herself wasn’t willing to do. The cringe makes us human.

this was fun, i love a long chatty video! i worked at the front desk of an art gallery and one day a guy came in, i said hello how are you etc and then he showed me a keychain he'd bought at the gift shop and said "i just bought this for my girlfriend." when he said that, i immediately assumed he was the boyfriend of my coworker (who i'd heard about but never met) and so i said "oh nice, are you [name]'s boyfriend?" he suddenly looked confused, paused, and said "no, i'm here for our meeting." ofc i had TOTALLY forgotten we were expecting this guy who hosts events to come in and have a meeting about a potential partnership! i felt so silly and just had to laugh it off, but it was definitely cringey. then i felt awkward the whole time he was there :')

As an IBS Girly, I felt that Immodium red carpet story so much. The sweat, the panic, the stress, the paaaaaaaiiiinnn - it's awful.
Not a cringe moment, but it's always fun to tell people, that I'm a NSFW artist and mainly draw men. The reactions are mostly positive, but it's so entertaining to see people's first confusion ^^

Love all your content. Loved this video.
Just yesterday I was recording a radio play for the bbc (I'm a professional actress-oh so may cringe moments, but great ones too).
I've been fortunate in my career and have been very busy lately.
I was convinced I knew no one in this cast, company.
Introductions were done and I confidently said to the writer "It's lovely to meet you! Looking forward to today!"
She looked at me as if I were mad and replied, "We met yesterday."
    I died inside.
tbf, I had come in the day before for a different job. I had a lot going on and we'd briefly met in the corridor.
Still feel awful! Still feelin' cringe.

Once when i was in high school and my intonation and bluntness was trash, i was with a summer school feminism club shooting for them for a week of programming and trips and shit.. anyway i got to know them really well and at the end of the week long programming we did a quick group photo, but after i took the one of the group they wanted me to get in one of the photos. So i set up the camera and at the time i didnt know much and I hadn't realized i effed up the shutter speed unintentionally... so one of the guides took the photo for us and we were packing up to leave when i was just flipping thru the recents on the viewfinder and I realized my mistake.. (this isnt even the embarrassing part) so I went up to the guide who literally just pressed one button and I just straight face told her, "Hey. This is really bad." and I just saw her smile crumble I felt soooo bad I was like NOO I set it up bad!!!! its not your fault!!! and she was like 'no its okay :(' and I literally couldn't explain myself and why it was my fault good enough because she was so sad the rest of the trip back I apologized so many times.... I still think about this one even though its been a million years.
