This list would have been 20 minutes long from other channels, for this to be 3 minutes now that's minimalism
RUclipsrs make their videos extra long so they can place additional ads in the middle of them. We don’t do that here.
I thought the same thing. This video is fantastic in every way!
duh, minimalism
Thank You.

Thanks for listing for us!
Thank you! I was about to write these down but instead I just took a pic of your list lol
Thank you.
I began my journey into decluttering, creating a capsule wardrobe, and living a more minimal life in 2016. It was a monumental shift for me given I was a collector, sentimental about everything (thus holding on to anything and everything), an idealist (‘I’ll be that size again someday), and someone who often purchased out of emotion.
Your content has helped change my entire life. I now have two kids and see how this change I embarked on years ago has continued to serve our entire family. I can clean the entire house easily. My daughters friends often remark about how our house is the “clean one” - they really mean that it’s minimal and uncluttered - flat surfaces are clear. My anxiety is less. I don’t feel the need to constantly purchase, consume or keep up with anyone. Getting myself and the kids dressed is simple. Decision fatigue is gone. Friends can drop by and I’m not embarrassed if they open a door or closet/drawer. My kids (5&2)are able to play easily but also pick up all their toys and clean their rooms in under 15 minutes. We purchase gifts and items with intention and purpose. I finally reached a place where I go to bed feeling no stress about stuff /a mess because my home is decluttered, peaceful and has been reset for the next morning.
Thank you so much for the inspiration and value you provide in this space. It’s transformative!
Sounds like paradise, well done 👏🏻
Great job, Rebecca. You give me hope. I started in 2020, some 15 months after we'd lost the mother of our 2 sons, just days after her 40th anniversary. I came in slowly, but gradually discarding things is going a bit more easily. My main reason, apart from the things you say, is that I want my boys to be left with things that matter, when one day I'll be gone. Thanks for having shared your story.
Please do donate all your towels and blankets to animal shelters. They desperately do need them. I can verify that.
towels, pillows and sheetws don't throw them away..take it to your nearest animal shelter..they will appreciate it.
We live in a 2br 1950s cottage in QLD, Australia. I had a week (for the first time in 8 years) home alone over xmas while the family went away and all I did was declutter, clean and watched tv 😂 I didn't have to think about anybody else, I didn't go to the shops. I just stayed home and it was bliss. So I did all of these things before NYD. It feels so good! 💃☕✨
Minimalism has changed my home and life! Happy New Year Joshua!
Happy new year!!
Please donate old but clean towels and blankets/throws to your local animal shelter!
I just got a planner that has a monthly “get rid of 25 things” goal built in. One of my goals for 2024 is to complete a 25 item list every single month. 😊
Where did you get the planner?
I’m going to add a page to my existing planner. What a great thing to have included. I was just thinking of that this morning. Thanks!
Oh woe where did you get the planner from?
What brand is this amazing planner?
Tell us where to find this planner
Remember to donate towels, washcloths, blankets to your local animal shelter, they need them desperately.
Great tip.
I wish we have shelters in my city 😢
Yes We do that about once a year. ❤
wow thanks
I did this !
Just a note on old towels, sheets etc. Keep some. You never know when a toilet will overflow, a pipe will burst, a window will be left open in a rainstorm or your water heater will decide to burst.
For sure. Maybe just keep them tucked away elsewhere (not mixed in)
We keep a few for washing cars/ rags but they move to the garage.
says the hoarder
They became "dog" towels for drying , cleaning the dog after a bath or after they come in from the rain.
Tip. You can create 6 categories for all the items in your home (for example, clothing, food and medicine, electronics, paper...), and go through one category each month. This way you do a full declutter twice each year.
Thank you for your RUclips channel. I am near the end of declutter. I did not know presence of empty shelves can be so peaceful. I also have more time in my hands and less brain fog. I know where everything is. ❤
Thanks for the continued inspiration on this journey.
You are my favorite minimalist, and I often quote you when communicating with others, including commenting on RUclips.
My tips would be:
Do a little at a time; you can always keep going during that session of decluttering, if you want.
It’s an ongoing process: if you open a drawer (or closet shelf) and see a bit of clutter, take five minutes (or less) to quickly declutter that area.
Try not to let things build up again by doing quick pickups before you leave a room.
And enjoy your clutter-free home.
Happy New Year to you and your family.
Declutter before you leave a room. Hmmm. That will take getting used to but it’s a good policy. Maybe take a radar look at the room to see if anything is out of order. Then either do something about it then or make a mental note for later.
@@fashehc this is where “will it take no more than (one min, two mins) to do?” comes in handy. Even just picking up dirty (left behind) cups, glasses, bowls will help.
I found making a place for the things I wanted to keep a good start. The surprise came when I put others of something in that place too. My husband was not on board until I showed him 11 tape measures . His strategy was just to go buy another one. He found he liked the money he was saving by putting things back into it's proper place. We also had 15 hammers too. He always blamed the kids (we have 4 that are long gone) when he couldn't find something. I still find things in the wrong place and have to put them back. I eventually decluttered to no more than five. Now he asks where are my 15 hammers? I reply, maybe one of the kids have it and walk away.😊
the same here
I refused to buy an item that I know I have already!
btw, working as a food buyer for a multi-state chain, I learned non-perishable foods in the pantry do not "go bad" by the listed expiration date. Most condiments in the fridge don't either. Those dates are designed by the food industry as a 1) marketing and 2) risk management tool to encourage people to buy new packages. Foods stored in a dry, dark pantry or cupboard may get stale, but that generally happens way after stated expiration dates. If it's something you'll never use, toss it, but otherwise it is probably safe to use.
I disagree. I had a box of cornbread mix, and it was passed by 1 year. I made it anyway and it was heavy and did not rise. Had to throw it out.
What a great list!! Personally, I find the "old cellphones and electronics" most challenging as in security concerns (don't they need to be "wiped") and where? Best Buy used to take a lot of electronics but now they limit them. There seem to be few other choices in my area.
Thank you! All the very best for 2024 to you, your team, your subscribers & your viewers.
And to you 😊
Always ensure that you recycle cleaning supplies and electronics responsibly.
Awesome!! But my roadblock is what to do with the stuff I have decluttered. I don't want to fill up landfills. Thoughts or a list? Thanks s bunch
What types of things specifically? You can typically Google “what to do with old _____?” and get a good list of ideas.
Loved this video! I've been decluttering my books recently but today I picked up your book, Things That Matter and I can't wait to read it! I've read your other book The More of Less and loved it! So far I've been a minimalist for about a month and I'm never going back! 🙂
I got rid of 10 plastic water bottles. The water tasted like soap and was terrible. I replaced them with 1 glass water bottle and love them! No yucky aftertaste !
Staying on top of those issues year round means we don't need to do a year end purge.🙂
Joshua, I still think about what your neighbor said to you in one of your videos. You don’t need all this stuff! Wow it’s so true. Thank you for all you do to help us understand we don’t need all the stuff!!! 😁
Kudos for me!!! Joshua, I met you in 2018 when I took a Professional Organizer course in Brazil and on your list of the 24 things, there are only two left that I haven't been able to let go of yet, which are power cords (I`m an IT worker) and books (inheritance from my grandmother). Bonus points for never having a junk drawer. Thank you for your value lessons!!!
I don't know if anyone has responded to the books being decluttered, but my town's public library has book sales event 2 times a year, one in Fall one in Spring. It lasts for 3 days. The last day if you bring a bag or I believe they have some donated there, when you fill that bag with books, you get that bag for a very small price. The sales events monies, 2 times every year, is to contribute to the public library!! The books come from the library but mostly from donations from people!!! Donations are also tax deductible, but ask your tax person on that to be sure. So if you do get rid of books and do not sell them at yard sales, try giving them, to your local public library or (children's books) to your local police department, child protection services, grade school, church for Sunday School, any place where children are and in need of education, distraction, uplifting. 💖 Keep circulating books!!!
GOOGLE in your area for recycle places. Best Buy takes old electronics & cords. Walmart takes excess bags. One place here recycles unused paint and chemicals, batteries. Free for the public to reuse!
Its books are difficult for me.😊
Look around the family and invite members to help themselves !
A little short after Christmas, but my tree was very dry. So i undecorated ( right word?) today and sorted and decluttered christmas decoration. All these stuff now find place in one box.
Blessing from bavaria Germany
I feel like you were talking directly to me. Lol
When we moved across the country about 1-1/2 years ago (and after I had read his book), we donated, sold, gave away and threw out almost 1/2 of the stuff we had so that we didn’t have to pay to move it, and we figured if we weren’t using it perhaps others would. Some of it had been in boxes for years.
It felt great to arrive at our new home with much less stuff.
I have been living by a few simple rules:
- if I buy something (like a pair of shoes) I have to get rid of a pair of shoes to make room for the new ones.
- no impulse purchases, I wait a week or more before an inexpensive purchase and much longer for an expensive purchase.
- I keep a list of things I call my wish list and every few months I go through it and cross off a lot of items. I rarely actually buy one of the items on that list.
I will do another walk-through of the house armed with the list from this video. Thank you.
Have a happy new year, Joshua! Thanks for the fantastic content.
Great tips
I live very intentionally. Although I'm intentional, I do love collecting dvds, ty beanie bears, and board games. I have a place for everything, and everything is organized. I only keep what I love, but I do have a nice collection of the things I listed above.
We’ve donated our (grateful) but unwanted Xmas gifts to a local charity
Wow - didn’t realize how I love to be organize - all 24 were done before I heard this video ! ❤
I struggle to declutter when it means throwing items right into the landfill. Are there recycling programs or companies you advise using to avoid adding to pollution and waste? Of course there's donating, but many places still throw items away. This tree hugger is open to any advice!
Re purpose if possible ! Exchange among friends and neighbours . Use up cleaning products , if possible ...
Many could cause various concerns .
I found the list a little fast and couldn’t absorb the content as easily but good list
Thank you. I started this event last fall, just finished up this week, ready for 2024.
Please give ideas what to do with the things mentioned
Becoming Minimalist and The Minimal Mom have helped me SO much on my decluttering journey and simplicity. Shedding the excess and unnecessary has given me more time and money to focus on service to others and hospitality. Thank you for your content, Joshua. I look forward to every Friday post.
When you list items to get rid of, consider taking it a step further and suggest the best way to "recycle" so they don't end up in the landfill. It is so very important know all the options!
It could be a good idea to re purpose items such as mugs ... they could become plant pots!
Hi. I started to declutter a few months back. But I feel Im too far from minimalism. Im still organizing sometimes instead of declutter. My credit bill was just $20 last month n Im shocked. Its never been less than $65
Its difficult to think of living with just few clothes. But Im gonna try. It
Look foward to ur vedio every week ❤
Thanks. Happy New Year !🎉
Oh n I read The Alchemist. First book I read in a long time. One thing new I did this year. U had mentioned it in one of ur vedio.
I like how fast paced this was, a good quick video with good info.
Kudos to the wonderful video....but it's more inspiring n refreshing to read the comments section....so full of life...
😊
It's the best community on all of RUclips by far.
I have done all 24 of these. I try to stay minimal. And It saves money too. Yay!❤
Processed food is good after the date. Research this and don't waste food.
Within reason .... it's certainly bad policy too eat harmful stuff !
I now ask myself what will it cost in time and resources to clean, maintain and repair an item before allowing it in my house.
My grown up son (quite inspirational on decluttering for me) keeps commenting on our really tidy spare room. It was a work in progress last autumn. Worth it because he notes his shock daily! Thanks always for your motivation. 🎉
You are so right!
Minimalism has been the best thing for me!! I get dressed so much faster and get more use of my clothes
Remember to delete some kind of minimalist that do advertise, and set you on to by stuff. To be a minimalist you dont need much😊. Stick to Jochua and you be fine...
The inside that helped me the most is that decluttering is a daily journey that I have to stick to. Just like washing the dishes or cooking. I don’t feel the ambition any more that I should do it in one session. Just keep going and watch it develop slowly.
In last 4 years I have hit every item in your list. Thanks for inspiring me to a calm, less stressful life Joshua. Grateful.
“Less is more.” Expect for money, more is always better 😅😂
90% of my attic could go with no problem!
I can’t help but smile while you’re mentioning the 24 items joshua. Cuz all of them are applicable to me. 😅😅😅
I have actually decluttered most of them in the past years (since the lockdown due to covid 19 pandemic) but, somehow, I discover that there’s more of the same things cluttered in other areas of the house. 😢
Thank you for this reminder Joshua. You have always been very helpful in simplifying my life. Hurray to becoming a minimalist!!!🎉
Well, I don't have any of these items mentioned! So I'll have to try another area 🤔 😄😄😉
This is my 2 .5 year decluttering journey towards a simpler home. I have more to declutter, but I am now conscious about what comes in the house.
Absolutely spot on when he said minimalism helps you see how little you really need! I''ve discovered i dont need alot to be content. 🙂
I like how you captured everything in 3 mins. Thx.
Great inspiration, Joshua! Thank you and Happy 2024 to you and your family.
I never get tired of your advice!
I love how quick and simple this video was!!
"Almost everything in your junk drawer." Truth! Lol!
How about crafts? I volunteer for different organizations, make gifts, canned foods etc...how do you deal with paper for making crafts, ribbons, fabric, threads...what's the catch?
How about when you only need to buy 1 item yet Amazon sells them in a pack of 3 or 5? Do I toss the extras in hopes that the 1 I've kept never breaks, and then when it does, buy it again?
So true!! Great list and one I'll be checking twice. I decluttered 5 years ago in preparation for selling my house - but fell in love with it all over again, because it felt so good! At the time, I had packed up some boxes of things that I figured I'd need for the new house but knew I would not need on a regular basis (I'm not a minimalist, because I refuse to pay for things twice, especially when you're retired - or don't have a You Tube channel that provides s steady income. As long as I have a place for something that I may need - someday - and it is out of the way, I keep it as long as it is in perfect working condition - besides, they don't make things as good as they used to). Five years of enjoying the fruits of my labor and I am finally ready to say goodbye to my house of 37 years. First thing to go through was those boxes that were packed 5 years ago. It was great - since I found several things that I am positive I would never use, unless I grow younger - lol - as well as sorted the things by room to make the move easier to unpack.
I’ll be working on those things tomorrow!
Don’t just toss away those “expired” food. They don’t have expiration dates. They have “best by “ dates. Why would you throw away, say for instance a can of beans that “magically “expired a month ago? Food is expensive.
You get to the point, Mr. Joshua!
Thank you for refreshing our memory, no time waisting...and giving us a push...to ACTION!
Happy & Free New Year 2024!!! (from clutter and heavy loads), a serene year with your family and nature!
helene :)
These things seem an obvious thing to get rid of and yet... thanks for the video
I must be on the (good) way because have none of these !!! (anymore) Thank you Joshua... and as someone said, always right to the essentials (3 minutes)
Very useful list handy for declutter home👍🤗
It would be great to know where donations can be made of the items decluttered from your home. Of course unusable items should be tossed but some items could get a new home!
Local charities , among others ?
I use Greendrop. They pick up.
Josh I did this a couple of years ago after watching your channel - continue to do it on a regular basis - it’s a game changer and you end up saving money as you don’t over buy
I will add to declutter and donate the toys your kids no longer use!
Good one.
With their knowledge and consent , please !
@@maureensamson4863 of course!
Ty! We accidentally broke our junk drawer a few months ago. Too much crap! All we go looking for now is tools and batteries. And finding new places that work better. Much success and blessings to you
That’s actually a useful list of items. I need to do all 24. Love #24: almost everything from your junk drawer lol 😂
Just love this man and his channel. I’ve been watching him, Josh, Nick and Leo for five years now in some fashion. I constantly declutter yet there is always more :). I personally like the aesthetics the best, and that keeps me motivated. Happy new year! Xo
Nice video. Nice that it doesn't have that annoying background music.
I’ve been following your YT channel for 2 years now. Thanks for another year of valuable content and for the inspiration to adhere to minimalism. I don’t comment a lot but have watched most of your videos, some even twice or thrice. May you have a prosperous, generous, and productive year ahead, but don’t forget to rest, too. 🎉🎉🎉
2:06 Thought you were going to say: "You can declutter your pets..." 😭
Sadly , too many believe in doing just that !😢😢
Its easy to know that inshould declutter and to say what to declutter but i dont want to trash them. Would be nice to have ideas on where to send them
Many of the things listed here can still be used. Think creatively who may be able to use them and keep them out of the landfill. A little more effort but so much more joy to know they will have another purpose
I did the dog toys and candles and some mugs. I can't look at junk drawer and my husband is the "keep that nut" type of guy. I do like many pens and 2 scissors (one always walks) but good tips on other things for people. My dog hated or wouldn't play with some rubber/harder toys and I dropped them at pound or put out on a neighborhood "free day|" Same with harnesses he outgrew. I realize I put out less and less every year for Xmas so will work on that next.
I agree about the pens and scissors ! Keep one in each place where it would be useful !
@@maureensamson4863 Because you grab one and it doesn't write and then you are searching for another, lol. It did write before! Scissors at Xmas, need 2 or 3. ; )
Looking Forward to all You have to say. 🙂
Except for the paperwork (which I dread,as I always think I will end up tossing someone important) I've done it all....and I still feel as if its TOO much stuff🙁
tjis seems like a repeat, and yet, a good reminder...well done Joshua!
I have done just about every category on this video over the past two months. Only thing I have not touched is the junk drawer because nothing in it belongs to me.
Minimalist videos like this! Common sense!
I've given many books to family members who appreciate , enjoy and treasure them !
thanks for this - i think i'll need to watch it a couple of times to keep motivated. happy new year to you, when it comes.
Hi last few days I've been busy, what I find so amazing is I've boxed up several items that have been just sitting here, when l look at my space it's definitely calm but I can't really remember what I boxed up. Several items there nice and will definitely help someone else out.
Happy New Year Joshua . Here’s to Health and Happiness
I'm good I have none of those 😅 I'm doing good
Thanks for the great list Joshua. Happy New Year!
❤😊
Seeing inside your cabinets makes me feel “ahhh”… you can actually breathe!! Wonderful list.
Joshua always looks restrained & calm,
but somehow slightly perturbed,
Like a pot on a hotplate, slowly simmering,
just below the surface.😮💨
His patience & perseverance is being tried & tested,
to form the true diamond that lies on the inside 💎
"Come on guys! 🤯
Get it together 😮💨
This is the 2nd time this hour that I've asked you to clean your sock draw.🫡
Come on, son.
Pull up your socks 🧦
Actually💡🤔
Better still, take them off & put them in the "Goodwill Donation Bin" 🕺😅
Only some lighthearted stirring, Monsiéur Becker.❤
Love your work 😍
You are a inspiration that adulting & organisation are obtainable in this life 😇🙏👏😊❤
(I'm already feeling judged by that the length of my comment could have been minimised or somehow recycled into compost 😁)
Most likely I'm just a little bit upset that nobody has a glass of water close enough to me when I need it while recording these videos :)
@@JoshuaBecker
I was actually hoping that you would've gave my comment a "❤️", 😮💨
at least for effort 😂
Please make sure you are well hydrated...& nourished, even if you have to take a break 🕺
Remember, we all need to show each other grace, patience & understanding,
my friend 😇
(PS: Thanks again for the fantastic & encouraging advice 🙏👏)

Done 😊
