This is soooo true… i actually think some of this newer stuff is SOO dialed that it would be harder to drive as a newcomer, up to intermediate skill… the way a rear motor turns vs mid motor, is less twitchy, and they are less reactive in the air…

I 100% agree that you don’t need the newest and greatest of a lot of stuff, especially RC cars. A good driver with an understanding of the track will preform well and win. I’m jealous a bunch that you have a dirt and carpet track close to play in those. My area has only dirt and it’s forever away from me. Wish that carpet would open close to get into this again. Since coming back to RC I miss the competition. Thanks for the video.

Pretty easy to figure out.... Are the lap times getting better from 10 years ago? My guess is not really

i went with the B64, and i still have a bunch of laps til im any where near pushing its limits. Parts seem to be plentiful but i went ahead and built a whole spare car

I try to run my race buggies for around 2-3 years since I only race 2-3 times per month. When parts become scarce I tend to get a new car since the tracks I visit don’t always restock parts for older models. I enjoy tuning the handling but try to only make 1 change at a time.

Yes...ish. I'd say it's definitely surface and class-dependent on how old/unoptimized/basher-focused a vehicle can be and still be competitive, with lower-traction surfaces giving more leeway. 2wd Buggy on carpet is probably the worst class for running older equipment, but you can still get away with running last-generation's model, especially at a club level and especially in mod classes where your motor can make up for any chassis deficiencies. But comparing that to 1/10th scale "mini" truggies on dirt (actual dirt, not slick-tire sealed clay), people still win races with the old HoBao Hyper TT10e, even against the theoretically vastly superior Tekno ET410 and XRAY XT4, and I've even seen people take podiums with Rustler 4x4s. And you can easily see how "stagnant" the 1/8th scale classes have been - it's not that there haven't been improvements, but before the Agama N1 the last big innovation in 1/8th scale buggies was narrow-body buggies with the introduction of the original 8IGHT, and as a result almost every new 1/8th scale buggy that comes out is mostly a sidegrade or at best a slight upgrade, not a huge game changer.
The way to judge how far back you can go is basically 1. the amount of available traction, 2. how setup-reliant the class is and 3. how drastically the class has changed over the years. I'd say the best classes for running older equipment are 1/10th scale "mini" truggy, 1/10th scale nitro truck and 1/8th scale truggy, all on loam or 50/50 loam-clay.

Downside with older racing stuff is when parts for them will quickly become unavailable. Couple years old racing kit and all stock is out.

it's funny you bring this up... People are so caught up in the latest and greatest and think it's going to fix their driving... when the real issues almost always Driver mods.. I ran my M8 Transmitter I bought in 2002 up until about 2018.. ( off and on racing over the years) I used it through so many various types of racing I had no reason to give it up.. 1- I absolutely loved it and - 2 I was still competitive and getting podiums so why change.. of course I was the only one running crystals and antenna transmitter lol but on the podiums I would intentionally pull my antenna out and have it angled across everyone in pictures. ( it was jokes and fun no one cared. ) You don't need the latest and greatest... The screen on my M8 finally went out.. it lasted a LONG time clearly!! I got a M17 now because it was so familiar and similar to my M8 . I love it.
