  • Many dismiss the value of cross-chokes for self-defense, seeing as the standard variation doesn't work with an opponent in a t-shirt. While the standard cross-choke works great for any bad guy wearing a jacket, coat, or other top with 2 thick, grip-able lapels, there are many ways to modify the choke for use with a t-shirt. In this highlight from a Gracie Street Choke Seminar, Rener and Ryron show how to perform a killer ezekiel-style choke variation from the bottom of Guard, with an opponent wearing a tee.

I wonder why you don’t furl the shirt with your left hand and only then pass it to your right hand in order to secure a steady head control? If there was g&p involved, I would see why it is important to keep the left overhook. Just asking, not trying to be smart. Pretty sure there is a reason for why you do it this way.

Why do you think they would be talking about scenarios in which a t-shirt can be used, buddy? Probably because they're talking about defence for street fights. What would happen if a fight got taken to the ground in a street fight..? Ground and pound!

@@lachlannossiter2842 Thank you first of all. Well, BECAUSE of probable GNP I was wondering about that short lack of control during „stage1“ aka furling the shirt with both arms before going back to neck-/head-control. Maybe in the video this is demonstrated in an exaggerated manner in order to make clear what you do with the shirt; nevermind in that case.

@@thebeastian2632it is exaggerated to show you what to do and how to achieve it properly. You use your right hand and secure the head while pulling up the shirt with the left and once it's all bundled you feed it into the right hand that is still securing the head and pass your arm thru for completion. It works on people who have absolutely zero training, especially boxers and wrestler types. Pull guard and put them to 😴 💤

Force choke is one-handed, but it's similar and, possibly, IBJJF-legal.
