  • In this episode of Cruising Off Duty, we will explain the issue that kept us locked in Cape Town for 10 extra days. We finally get the paperwork to leave and we have a fiasco getting out through immigration where one of us is deemed "Undesirable" and told they may never be allowed back into the country. Yikes!! It is insanity and it's so bizarre, it has to make you laugh.
    Stay tuned for the story and Day 1 and 2 of the sailing voyage across the Atlantic.

    Stop trying to imply that South African customs are fickle. Have you ever been through US or Australian immigration. I say this as a South African from Cape Town living in the UK. I personally have been through a lot worse elsewhere. Nothing personal but your problems are first world ones.

      Cruising Off Duty i has help in Miami for half a day by immigration coming back into usa from Jamaica on a diplomatic passport. Been working in usa on official permit for 3 years already. So totally legal. Yet still held. All i got was a “ sorry mistake made”. If an American diplomat was so held in SA Hell would have been made. This man broke immigration laws so live with it

    G'day Craig.
    By any chance do you serve in a traffic division?
    Back in the early 1970's I met one of my longest standing and best buddies at a State run Australian academy.
    We were 16 year old cadets at the time and have been good friends since then and you remind me greatly of him.
    He retired almost ten years ago at 55 after serving in traffic his entire career of around 40 years and specializing on motor bikes for most of that time.
    They had a great pension scheme back then but naturally it changed for the worse in 1989.
    My buddy now divides his energies between travelling about Australia with his better half in their RV, a bit of surfing, taking overseas trips (he loves Hawaii and has been several times) and restoring old motor bikes.
    I left the job and did other things such as bush flying for a while then I re-entered service and remain a sworn member with the same organization but non-operational now due to chronic vocation-related injury.
    I couldn't help wondering if you serve in traffic too since you seem to have a distinctive personality similar to most of the 'speedies' I have been acquainted with.
    In fact you could almost be a doppelganger for my old mate.
    Just curious.

    Wow, that was one heck of a bunch of plastic bags!! Curious if the owner was astute enough to demand all the cardboard containers (cereal & pasta boxes, etc) be left ashore & disposed of?

    • @Bowmans-Woods
      @Bowmans-Woods  5 лет назад +2

      Yes. We took everything out of cardboard before it came on the boat and froze everything that was in paper bags, like flour to kill anything that may have been living in it.

    You mentioned already your preference for the X5 over the Bluewater 50. I watched those vlogs of your former crossing and remember you complaining about the slamming noise. Could you please compare the X5 and BW 50 briefly in terms of performance and comfort. Thx

    • @Bowmans-Woods
      @Bowmans-Woods  5 лет назад +3

      Hard to say performance. 1st passage was mostly light winds. Both performed well. Less slamming on X5 for sure.

    I am pretty sure that they use an OBD11 style conection to monitor the engines though thats a bit of a ,isnomabecause the yanmar is a common rail engine it has an on board engine management computer this allows the engine to run as all the information the engine needs is held in this comp (AKA) ECM/ engine control module for those who have little about diesels you have mechanical single injection or common rail multipoint injection electrical injection

    • @Bowmans-Woods
      @Bowmans-Woods  4 года назад

      OK. I will take your word for all that. You have far more knowledge than I have on engines. I know how to check and change fluids and the basic understanding of how a diesel engine works on compression.

    Pnp.. I dought very much you would find wheavils in it... everything is fresh... actually we are more first world than what you think not including our gov.. lol.. but you could point your finger in any direction an Im sure you would find a mall or a supermarket in that 10 klm radius.. can you do that in Greese Italy Spain. Russia.. think about it.. yes you have allot more high rise buildings but we not that far behind the rock

      Sorry, that is an old video. Did we say the food had Wheavils? If it was about taking off the cardboard off food packaging? That is just a good policy on a boat no matter where you buy the food. Cardboard gets soggy in high humidity. Its not about SA being less than a 1st world country

      Understood about unboxing... to refrigerate for bugs.. my reference to PNP is that this store has a good reputation for its quality and could easily be compared to the quality you would find in Woolworths here in SA..thuss the chances for bugs are minimal..and stock rotation happen in the store so you expirey dates should be good..

    Walking around somewhere like South Africa with a police cap on is bold, possibly even illegal. It would be illegal in UK, Australia and New Zealand. The ottawa font is not readily visible compared to the POLICE text.
    I like the idea of pre freezing the food to kill the bugs.

    Well we finally get to see the leaving video!!! I'm not sure I would have gone for the upgraded engines. On one hand it is likely they would last longer, but probably wouldn't provide the fuel savings of the 50 hp models. I guess a fuel usage chart relating to relative speed vs price would have helped me make up my mind.

    • @Bowmans-Woods
      @Bowmans-Woods  5 лет назад +2

      Ya. I assume the 80 will do the same speed at lower RPMs so I dont think the fuel would be much more. But the cost of 2 80HP engines vs the cost to buy 2 50or55HP engines would be very noticeable. But it is built into the price. They decided to only offer 80HP.

    • @realulli
      @realulli 5 лет назад +1

      The guys from Cat Greatcircle once said they'd always go for the maxumim sized engines for the boat, just in case the power is really needed, e.g. to keep the boat pointed somewhere in bad weather. They have a Lagoon 52S with twin 110hp engines.

      It’s extremely easy to get out of SA at immigration. Just don’t break the immigration laws. Try getting out usa or any other country where you over stayed your visa or your entry permit. EU Citizen’s and US/ Canadian etc do NOT need visas for South Africa for visit NOT exceeding 30 days. You think you going over that because of a unavoidable delay, ask for an extension BEFORE you break the law. As simple as that.
