    I decided to start watching all of these videos right from the beginning . I know I've seen them all before , but it's really cool to watch the progression . It looks like in this test, you started to restrict the incoming air witch looks like it got your ember bed temps up. Is this a correct assumption? Anyway , just taking a little R&R break with the intention of hitting the ground running with the conclusion of the gasifier, and the start of the rest of the plumbing and filters. I'd just like to say thanks again for making this info so available to all of us, including the mistakes. It becomes a lesson for us all. Thanks, Joe

    I think the work you have done and this gasifier system you have created is brillant.
    I can hardly wait for the final details. I would very much like to see you use it in a practical
    manor, such as connecting it to a gas engine. Thank you for your videos!

    Good job. Using a prefilter flare is pretty clever. In theory it should extend the life of your filter medium.

    No kidding, any info you can come up with and share is the most valuable thing there is.
    I built a camping gasifier stove (primitive version of a woodgas generator). People kept telling me to patent and sell it but I get more out of sharing the idea with others (the vid is on this account I think)
    I like your idea using the polyester fiber, infinitely reusable and a good value.
    I personally prefer welded pipe instead of pvc when it comes to woodgas but your is a built in explosion relief safety

    I am planning a imbert myself. On the horse manure, it takes to long to compost, i have to much of it. besides in my case its a "free" renewable energy source to run my generator. I know its not as good as wood,but I have plenty of wood also and the horse poop is free.If a five gallon bucket of manure would run for 2 hours I could run agenerator about 16 hours a day without picking up a chain saw. Thanks for sharing

    On mine, I married a piece of steel pipe onto the output because of the fear of what happened to yours. I will go to your channel and check it out. I am hoping that you did a video on it good or bad results. This is why I place all of my videos up here so that people could see me experiment and tune this thing up.

    Part of the reason your condensate is "the color of coca cola" is because the walls of your propane bottle are cooler, condensation is constantly forming and dripping to the bottom. More importantly, because the walls are wet as well there is a lot more surface area for the impurities to "stick" to.
    Just thought I'd add that.
    I made mine out of a 100lb propane bottle and a 50lb car propane bottle (cyclone filter). I need to make another blower fan the get it back up running though.
    Great vids!

    Bravo man. You have made blue flame. I think the wet helped for sure on the steel wool. So really, there is no need for high temp pipe. Nice...

    I am almost ready with the new build. If you are considering building one of these hold off building the FEMA. It was a really good learning experience for me and I don't regret constructing this but the Imbert design is a cleaner gasifier. The tar will mess up an engine in a NY minute and this is why I never hooked this to a generator. I do plan on reconstructing this to be an Imbert gasifier somewhere down the road so I don't waste the materials..

  • @flash001USA
    @flash001USA  12 лет назад

    First of all thanks for the reply. I would have to agree with you because I originally had a vortex and I got to tell you that the propane tank dusted the vortex filter and I think it all comes down to a area that allows the gas to spread out and condense any moisture and with it, tar too. I'm building a imbert and that will be the real keeper for me. This was a great learning experience for me so it definitely was not a waste of my time.

    No problem with the questions. I plan on making a new video with the complete build on this filter design. Unfortunately, I have already cleaned the filters after this video but I did describe what I found in the video. Take a minute and listen to the end where I am speaking and you will hear me describe what I found in the filters after the test.

    Ali, once my system warms up there is no smoke whats so ever blowing out of the pipe. A safe rule of thumb would be if you see smoke or vapor do not run it through your engine unless you determine that it's just water vapor. Even if the FEMA I build was cracking tar (and it doesn't) I will not run anything including burnt tar soot through an engine because soot is carbon and carbon WILL scratch the piston walls over time!

  • @flash001USA
    @flash001USA  12 лет назад

    Rick thanks for the complements man! The horse manure thing may be a great fuel to experiment with. As far as how much wood I used believe it or not, I didn't use that much. I probably burned a 5 gallon bucket in a 4 hour window so not that much! I'm building the Imbert system and I'm close to finishing it and that will be the workhorse keeper. This first build was a good learning experience but I want a cleaner burning setup so the Imbert is the way to go.

    The first time I tried the filters I was burning damp wood and I captured a lot of water through the whole system. It took the filters 30 minutes to stabilize and once they did, the gas was clean to a point of no vapor whats so ever from the output. I am now moving over to a good Imbert design that will crack tar and this filter will complement the new design very well. Before I forget, the 10 gallon tank is also a "must have" with the filters because it also cleans and removes water too.

    Does your ten gallon tank collect liquids or tar if so how much and how is it emptied? I believe I have missed too much of your build. How much syn gas does your system produce in volume? Can this gas be collected and pressurised into a volume vessel like a propane vessel? Thank you for spending so much time and effort to teach others in what you have learned. You are a real gent for sharing all that you have proved.

    • @flash001USA
      @flash001USA  8 лет назад

      Running a FEMA like I was in this video the tank was collecting water and tars. You may want to check out my later videos with my newer gasifier build for more information. The tank does a good job of allowing the gas to cool and lose a lot of the water vapor and suspended particles in the raw gas. As to tar you will have very little if any when you run a Imbert design provided you use good fuel and have everything set up correctly.

    That flame looks pure enough to run a internal combustion engine. I would love to have you measure the impurities in that flame, it can't be much at all. Like I said that's as pure as any natural gas from any supplier. Good job

    • @flash001USA
      @flash001USA  5 лет назад

      Hey thanks for the reply. Something that I've learned by experimenting with this long enough is you can have other colors in the flame and still have extremely clean gas. The main thing you're looking for in a flare is that you don't see is a milky yellow. flare. Milky yellow flares pretty-much always relates to tar vapor in the gas. Burning different kinds of wood can add things into the gas that give it different colors. Ive seen red and orange flares off of the wood I harvest on the property but I can extinguish the flare and shine a light directly into the gas output and it's totally invisible. That's basically what you're looking for on the filtered end. If in doubt you can take a white paper towel and put it over the flare output without igniting the flare give it a few minutes then remove the white paper towel and look for discoloration. If it's discolored see if it will rinse out with water or with a little bit of soap and water and if it does you're dealing with fine ash but if it stains the paper towel you've got tar vapors due to the temperatures in the gasifier being too low.

    @flash001USA  11 лет назад

    The filters can clean out some tar from the gas but not if the tar is dripping out of the gasifier. One thing I noticed is that the filters ran better the longer the system ran! I'm building an imbert system now. What size engine are you aiming to run? Are you wanting to run a generator? If so, what wattage?
    I may be able yo help you fine tune your gasifier.

  • @flash001USA
    @flash001USA  11 лет назад +1

    First of all I am glad that you are having good luck with the filters. Before you run the gas through the filters though, be sure to let the gasifier get warmed up for at least 15 or 20 minutes so that you don't pollute the filters with the heavy start-up smoke. Alright, the fire popping up in the reactor is a flaw in the FEMA because the fire wants to climb up. I had this same issue too. There is a half-Ass fix that should help you. Either get a cheap skill saw blade or a round piece: Cont

    You were also asking about capturing water. It captures almost 1/2 of a gallon each time I run it and the water is full of all of the ash and debris that escape the gasifier but the biggest plus is that captures a lot of tar gas from the system too! I originally placed the second tank inline to cool things down and the rest of the stuff it does was a big surprise and a bonus to me! The new filter tank design will be a Cadillac compared to this old 10 gallon tank.

  • @flash001USA

    Hey thanks man! It's more about just experimenting with this and trying to figure the best approach to take. I just finished constructing a new Imbert gasifier and I am just waiting on the weather to give me a break so I can give it a try.

  • @flash001USA
    @flash001USA  11 лет назад

    There is no doubt about it! It works so well that I will no longer use a vortex filter on the system again. I just got in from working on the new pre-filter design. It is actually a multi purpose setup. (1) It cools the gas down to the point that it's almost room temperature. (2) it removes a large majority of the water from the gas. (3) It also removes all of the large particles better than a vortex filter does and it captures a lot of tar too.

  • @flash001USA
    @flash001USA  12 лет назад

    I tried to think outside the box with the filter setup and it seemed
    to pay off. I think the new system will be much more stable just because of the larger diameter tube. The 4 inch tube is hard to work with for many reasons but it can be made to work. I am sitting down now and trying to figure out the diameter for the air jet inlets. I'm thinking of using either six 1/4 inner diameter or 6 3/8 diameter jets. I'll know once I research it. Somewhere there's a formula to calculate those diameters

  • @flash001USA
    @flash001USA  12 лет назад

    so that I can extend the reduction zone by a few inches and possibly choke it down to 3 inches at it's output before I weld on the inverted bell. The FEMA plans say to use a 2 inch output opening for a 5 Hp and of course a 4 inch for a 15 Hp so I am considering compromising with a 3 inch hole because I feel that anything smaller will fight with it clogging up. I need to know how deep to make the reduction bell also. I have some work to do before I build this. Any ideas are welcome.

    As soon as I can set some time aside I plan on doing the new build! I just like the idea of a sealed fuel hopper because I have seen the fire creeping issue with the FEMA where sometimes the fire follows the oxygen and tries to climb up the pipe and consume fuel too soon. That's why I only feed the fire tube small bits of fuel as I go along.

I'm building a "flash design" hearth that will NOT interfere with being able to service the jets! I think you will understand and appreciate what I am going to build plus it will be simple and controllable and the ignition fan will be moved to the input side so no more dirty fans.

When I finish the new build I want to compact everything to keep it in a small footprint and if I can control the temperatures That shouldn't be an issue. For now, I have just been burning off the gas but in the final build there will be a 10 ft gas line to feed an engine with.

    For the final filter medium, have you considered sponges? As your video shows, the water becomes more clear with each stage (you won't be gumming them up too much), and water is drawn from the gas in each stage, so the sponges seem to offer a final chance to capture moisture.

    A round piece of steel and drill a 1/2 to 3/4 hole dead center of it and lay it on
    top of the tube. This can help by not allowing the fire to burn so easily yet it will allow air to feed the reactor or the ember bed. This is why I constructed a Imbert gasifier and yes, it makes a real difference. I'm only going to use the fan to start it with and you are correct about the back flash. I've seen that on my little system whenever I light it too soon. This should still allow the motor to self draw once the motor is running plus I will have a variable speed control on the fan. This won't quite be a hearth system not like you think it will be. I just found a damned good PDF file covering the information I needed. According to what I read, if I use a 3 inch opening at the bottom of the reduction zone, I only need three 3/8th inch air nozzles and I would offset them off by 120 Deg from each other so that they would be in a uniformed triad configuration. They didn't cover how deep the reduction zone was but the air nozzles are right above the reduction zone. This was how I envisioned it but I just wasn't sure about the nozzle (cont)

    the amazing thing is how you say that even your filters are not getting dirty quickly!!! this means your burning most of the tars because in my case the filters will get dirty. I still havnt understood your design but i need to look at your other clips.. but basicly those big pipes are just air cooled radiator? and you have cyclone and percipitator? so you first have cyclone then you catch the water in percipitator and cool in in radiater adn then filter it right?

    I guess it really comes down to your personal needs. For me wood is the simplest fuel because I have woods and not only that, I could pick up branches from the side of the road broken down from wind that's already dried if I chose too. In the case of creating a ton of manure per month (that's a lot), I'd say that *not* doing something 'quick' with it, like pyrolysis, could make it a bit of a problem... and digestion can take a little while, even with worms involved... Black soldier fly can speed it up but not much energy

    One thing too keep in mind too the FEMA plans are just real basic setup to get a start once you got a nice blue flame for get the FEMA or they will screw u up and just keep going like u are and look at other setups more modern to get the right numbers as to size or if u base it all on FEMA design u just might find it short on gas production when u really need more!

    Yeah, You have to in order to keep the ashes from building up in the bottom. I also use a 3/8 threaded rod poker too.

    Just so you know, my brain is fried over all of this but in a good way! Either way, I have a feeling that I am going to have a damned good Gasifier on this next build.

    One more thing that i like allot is that yr doing a cold filter setup not a warm one like most of us other ppl i really like that idea and in my next one i build i will have to try that one as a 50/50 part hot and part cold filter. By using a cold filter u then can use the pvc pipe where my setup is all metal.

    It is a great filter setup look at it like this in just a few vids u took a FEMA design and got good clean gas most spend month trying to get a okay flame u have great looking gas with just a few simple modifications no rebuild just change this or that and each time it got alot better and now its just sweet ready to start running gen or other stuff and its made in a way easy to make larger with out a big redo!

  • @dammannc
    @dammannc 11 лет назад

    See last comment...It seems like the heat from the flare flame (ORANGE) traveled back toward the pvc parts and started melting them. I know pvc should be ok at this point because I've seen several other youtube videos using pvc at this point. Any ideas?

    Flash, I have a question. Hope you can shed some light. I am in the process of building a gasifier and did my 2nd test run today. Last time I was not able to get it lit. Today I got it lit, but it only bunred a minute or so, then the pvc from my blower motor melted and fell off. It looked almost exactly like yours. A marine bilge blower motor between 2 peices of pvc. The bottom pvc from the filter, the top to a peice of steel exhast pipe. See my next comment for the rest.

    I've watched all the gasify vids on here i can find. This rocks! I like the idea of the pvc filters. Low cost and easy take down. I have a ton of horse manure a month to use as biofuel. Also the band thing, listened to your tunes sounds good man! I would like to know about your fuel consumtion. How many pounds per hour does it burn?

  • @flash001USA
    @flash001USA  11 лет назад

    I agree with you. This is a FEMA and it's nasty! I have constructed a Imbert that doesn't produce anymore goo. The one good thing with playing around with the filters was that they stripped all of the impurities from the gas to the point that the gas was invisible once the flame was extinguished. These filters are good for the FEMA designs that produce tar because they can't reach the high temperatures to crack it.

    Fantastic Videos flash001USA!!
    I built a FEMA stratified downdraft gasifier and copied your tri-filter. It works fantastic!! Using a lot of sawdust.. I am having an issue with the gasifier itself. I have a 6 x 24" reactor tube with a 4" restriction at the bottom. While trying to get a flare, a fire pops up in the reactor itself. It has happened with both pellets and small sticks and chuncks. I have tried increasing air and reducing air... Any ideas??? Thanks for the awesome videos!!

    I read somewhere in my past that once you have a flame, you don't even need a fan . ??????
    Also isn't smoke unburned fuel? Then by trapping in your filter you can burn it in you reactor, since you have to clean out anyway. A kind of bio- char.

    • @flash001USA
      @flash001USA  5 лет назад

      Keep in mind that this is a very old video. If you get a chance, check out the newer gasifier videos The system as a whole has been much improved Including the filters. The fan or blower is only used to start the gasifier up. Once the gasifier has been started the engine will take place of the fan blower drawing on the gasifier like a cigarette to keep it going. As to smoke you can still have some micro soot that makes it's way through the filters and it will normally make the flare a Halloween orange. If you are dealing with poor gas with tar the flare will be milky yellow. I hope this helps answer your question.

    Looks like good info! I wouldn't call yr setup a FEMA design for a few reasons u started with the FEMA design it stopped on the drawing board once u got yr filter design thats a flash design based off the FEMA burner thats it and once u add the air jets it will then be an imbert design burner no FEMA left in it lol! Keep up the great work love seeing the nice blue flame!

    I'll go check out your video with your wood gas stove when I get off of work. On the PVC, you could never use it near the hot side but using it once things have cooled down is fine plus some of the pieces are not glued together on purpose and this would allow for a blow back without turning the unit into a bomb but other than that everything else is welded.

    Hey man great looking rig you have there! I was looking into trying to build one of these and was wondering what is in the filters or is it just air space besides the paper filter?
    Thanks! If you have answered this in another video I am still in the process of watching most and scanning alot of your info and I appoligize for this as I am impatient.

    Can you take off the lighting port cap and measure the temp inside the firebox?
    if you drill out the cap and put a piece of oven glass you might be able to take a
    better temperature reading without allowing air into the system.

    LOL most hearth setups have a flat reduction area and those with a tapper really r not a hearth atleast to me lol! I tho would not force air in as if you feed too much air in yr askin for trouble as in back flash! i use a good paint coat on my fan so it can be easy to clean up and i only use external motor fan so the motor never is in the tar! I already appreciate what u have already added to wood gas setups with yr cold filter design.

    I'm going to run a generator with it and I won't run anything over 6 or 7 Hp. I may experiment with capturing some of it the way you are doing it but that will be a while. According to the FEMA build the 4 inch tube setup I am running is technically good for up to 15 Hp. I have a 8-3/4 inner diameter oxygen tank that's 1/4 inch thick
    and it already has a reduction zone on it but I plan on cutting it at the bottom of the bell somewhere around 4 inches. (cont)

    Hi Flash001USA, you make great experiences! Great Videos and comments! Do you have now some long term experience now with your filter? I mean for e.g. more than 500 hours of Operation or so? I like to know how often (after how many hours) you have to clean the pads and can you use them again after cleaning even when you cleaned them e.g. 5 times or more or do you need to exchange them? Thank's, Pat.

    One of the big differences is just the diff types of wood the hardest part to add in to the math if its more dry or more moisture or hard wood soft wood or a heavy sappy wood! Thats why i made my simple math way having jets just a little bigger but have air inlet control so if i burn a diff wood or if it has more moisture easy to adjust more or less air in to get it right!

    Wouldn't it be more efficient use of feedstock to gasify the manure via anaerobic digestion and then feeding the remaining solids to worms or just composting it? ... assuming you have the use for the compost or worms that is. Wood just seems to make more sense to me for gasification via pyrolysis than manure. Manure seems to have too many other values to it

    Fist thing i would need to know is what is yr end use for the setup running a gen or running a gen and making gas storage how big of hp if its a gen and i have a math way to figure it all out by just knowing what u want it for and i if its for a motor just need the dia of the inlet of the carb on the motor and i can give u alot of the info and the math on how to!

    i think the paper towel filter do the best job in your filtersystem , i will use for my system 1 wood ochip filter and 2-3 paper towel filters so when one is breaking i will not be in need of an engine clean day ;D when do you run a engine on it , i wonna see how it works with a engine ;D good work
