    I really appreciate the extra effort you've given in your videos! It helps solve so many questions. The polyester fiber will be a solution to many problems I had encountered in my own design.

    Hey, one more thing... I didn't mention this in the video but I actually ran this test with damp wood because we had a big storm the night before I did the last test for this filter video. I can say this much, water or damp wood is a no no for a gasifier because it kills any chance for a clean burn. In Video 6, I burned dry wood and not only was the water levels very low but the paper filter stayed white and the PVC pipe for the paper filter looked like it was never used on the second test.

    There are a lot of ways to do the ash port. Some people use ammo cans that are welded into the side of a drum. I made my own door just because I didn't want to be trying to weld on the thin barrel material.

    This is the beauty of experimenting. The sky is the limit with things to try but in the end you want it to be cheap and easy to clean.

    Thanks, I am still collecting "stuff" to start making a wood gas unit

    This was a wake-up call for me after seeing all of the tar in my first test. This is why I decided to construct this filter. Speaking of constructing, the new gasifier is finished sir and if the weather is good tomorrow evening I will test the unit out so wish me some good luck!

  • @flash001USA
    @flash001USA  11 лет назад

    The best filter is probably a venturi scrubber. I had a lot of water in the test wood that I burned in this test so that didn't help things. The best way to
    have clean gas is not to build a low temperature gasifier like the FEMA because they produce tar just by their design but the trifilter that I built
    really does remove the tar. The key to removing tar is to cool the gas down to room temperature BEFORE you filter it. Once cooled the tar can be stripped out of the gas and make it sparkle.

    This is one of the best ever after run vids i have seen anyone do! Keep up the great work! You said you think that the flame got better and you think it was due to that there was moisture in yr filters one way to test that out would be to prewet the filters b4 starting up! If your flame get blue faster then yr right and u have a way of good cold filtering. Cold filtering would have alot of good things to it. I now want to try out the polyester myself looks very good for a washable filter.

  • @flash001USA
    @flash001USA  11 лет назад +1

    Thanks for the reply. There are many filter mediums that would probably work really well so it's only up to your imagination. The polyester filler is very cheap and it cleans very well with Oxy-Clean too. I have recycled the same polyester fiber somewhere around 10 or 12 times so that's not bad.

  • @flash001USA
    @flash001USA  11 лет назад

    Yes sir I have! I am going to try to design one since electronics is my profession. The problem with the electrostatic filters is the gas can cause them to short out and once that happens, the filter quits working but I think I have an idea that will allow it to NOT short it out during long runs. That's another story and I still have a long way to go with the gasifier build first.This is on the job learning for me.

  • @flash001USA
    @flash001USA  11 лет назад

    I mixed the different filter medias up just to be able to get an idea which one would filter the best. I even thought of using straw in the tube instead of wood chips. The stainless steel wool along with the polyester fiber can be cleaned and reused over and over. House insulation would work too but the polyester fiber won't get onto your skin like the insulation will.

    Hi me again, Just wondering if you soaked some wood with the excess water then let it dry out will that make that would easier to burn (once dry)? may me a silly question but Im always looking for ways to re-use waste in a good way.

  • @flash001USA

    cvpages I was flying blind with all of these ideas so there is where the different setups come from. I came to the conclusion that I didn't need the double cooling towers just by trying to clean and cool the gas. As far as the filter media is concerned, I used steel wool in the first part of the filter to capture the larger stuff followed with wood chips to help capture moisture then I used the polyester fiber as a finer filter. This is all a learning curve for me: Cont

  • @flash001USA
    @flash001USA  11 лет назад

    Tough Case thanks for the reply. This is one of my much older videos. I no longer use this FEMA and I'm working on a really good cooling system for my new setup. The only PVC pipe will be the filters along with the gas output at the end of the system so the PVC pipe will not see any heat. If you get a chance, check out the video links in this video. Thanks.

  • @flash001USA
    @flash001USA  12 лет назад

    Thanks for the reply. I still have a lot to get done with the new build but I'm having some fun with this so that's what matters.

  • @flash001USA
    @flash001USA  11 лет назад

    And in the end, I want to shrink the filters down but that won't happen until I fine tune the new Imbert gasifier I constructed. The Imbert gasifier is a much hotter unit then the FEMA by a long shot but I did get the gas cooled so that's one part of the puzzle. Hot gas has two downfalls. First It expands the gas and makes it burn inferior like an extremely low octane poor quality fuel. The second thing is hot gas carries a lot of moisture which ruins the quality too.

    One thing you might want to try, I saw something like it in another video is a water filtersystem. It made me think of a water pipe/bong from the 60's. run your gas through it befor you run it through your filters. Also you might be getting tar added to your gas from the wood chips in the filter, maybe try to use the S/S pads in two of your tubes and the poly in the third one to see what the results are. Just a Thought, Great Videos. Thanks.

    No but I seen one in a video just the other night. I honestly can't comment on that type of setup but the one I seen wasn't constructed very well. I made a short video "video-8" where I constructed a new Imbert design with air nozzles to feed the ember bed instead of the downdraft setup in my videos but then I came up with what I think will be a very good design that will be ultra simple with the bare minimum of tools needed. Shoot me a personal message if you want some info on it.

    This is in reply to something you just sent me. Why in the hell is his flame so yellow? Mine burns like that burning from the prefilter port but even mine has some blue in it. I know that these units have to warm up too but that flame is not clean looking. I'm sure that he is burning before it gets filtered or at least I hope he is. The unit does look tuff and I'll give him that much. One more thing, the idle on the generator is all over the place in the video too.

  • @YukonCornelius72
    @YukonCornelius72 11 лет назад

    I was thinking, instead of the loose polyester fiber fill for the tube, what about the spongy foam cushion type pad coated with vegetable oil. I would think it would be easier to clean and longer recycle life.

  • @flash001USA
    @flash001USA  11 лет назад

    I didn't want to remove the carburetor because I wanted the generator to stay original so that it could be ran from gasoline too so what I did was to replace the filter intake with a piece of Lexan that would accept the new external wood gas carburetor. If I decide to run on gasoline the woodgas filter replaces the original filter and to do this you simply shut off the woodgas fuel intake and make sure to leave the woodgas carburetor fresh air intake wide open.

  • @flash001USA
    @flash001USA  12 лет назад

    Once again tecknowfreak you read minds. I thought of trying just that but a part of me also tells me that just like rich people have a tendency to hang out with other rich people, the tar has the same tendency to stick to itself so the tar vapors might also play into this equation as they attach to the filter.

  • @flash001USA
    @flash001USA  12 лет назад

    All kidding aside I thought of that. Here's one plus with the tank. Once it puddles up in the bottom with water, the particles along with a lot of other garbage stick to the water surface.

    • @flash001USA
      @flash001USA  9 лет назад

      +david lahey You could but with the Imbert design these filters don't have any goo or tar in them and I can just rinse the filter media off with Oxy-Clean and let them dry for the next run. As far as the wood chips go I just allow them to dry out and reuse them.

  • @TecKnowFreak
    @TecKnowFreak 12 лет назад

    You must be reading my mind lol that was my second thought as i typed that last night thinking tho with how my filters are warm i wondered if it was my water or that they got alot of tar fast from the startup lol wow we think too much alike lol. I thought like how water vapor builds up faster when there is a light condensate film my thought was bet its the same with tar just takes a little to make alot. So try one run with a clean damp and one using one or 2 peices of used filter by inlet.

  • @owakefie
    @owakefie 10 лет назад +1

    Have you tried using just plain baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) to clean your filter media? I use it as a scouring agent when cleaning pots and pans and the grease under the range top - and it is the most effective cleaner I have found (even better than "oven cleaners"). I know that it is also used in industrial processes (along with caustic; NaOH) to separate oil and water, which I think is the goal here. Im in the process of building a tri-filter like yours, so I will let you know how it goes if you don't get to it first

    • @flash001USA
      @flash001USA  10 лет назад

      No I haven't tried using baking soda. The OXY-Clean nailed the job because it just dissolves any tars on the filters or the filter media right off. This video was made before I built my Imbert gasifier so I really don't see any tar issues like there is in this video but I still use Oxy-Clean because I reuse my filter media with the new system and that's a good thing since I no longer have the need to purchase polyester fiber and the Oxy-clean works great on the stainless steel wool pads too. I just dry my wood chips out in the sun and reuse them too.

    That tar water can be bad for most plants but adding the biochar to soil makes a big diff on how plants grow. I do know that the dark water full of tar can work great as a weed killer lol from what i have tested it covers the plant with a tar residue and stops it from breathing lol and in days it dies lol i tried it on grass and killed about a 4ft area used a bucket and threw it out 2 days later wife was mad as hell at me for killing the good grass.
