I was about 16 at the time and remember Ivan Cooper , Finbar ,Eddie McAteer in Duke Street that day when we were all brutally beaten off the streets by thugs in RUC uniforms. John Hume was one of our teachers at St Columb’s college and there were so many strategy discussions going on in his classroom which was #10 that we called it Downing Street at the time . All of these men were fearless civil rights activists who denounced violence in the pursuit of equality and civil rights for all citizens, only a sick dysfunctional, gerrymandered , sectarian state like Northern Ireland was then would see these visionaries as threats , if the Unionists had listened to them and worked with them the Troubles would have been avoided, it would be fitting to see a monument in Derry in appreciation of Ivan Cooper and the Civil Rights Association.
It's a pity that both sides of the political spectrum don't see it that way. I'm a firm believer in children learning together, playing together and sometimes having the odd scrap as a good thing. Where you hang your hat on a Sunday shouldn't matter, but what you do on a Monday should.
@@geordiewishart1683 Hello Makem, your not very bright he was associated with John Hume etc he was more for Irish Nationalism than Irish Republicanism you do know the difference right ? He also recognised that in Derry there was blatant discrimination
Ivan was brought up initially in Kilaloo. This is very much in the periphery of Londonderry. Not Derry. You say you are a Derry man living in Australia. Well which is it? You must mean you are now Australian?
@@Derryman63I stayed in Seven Kings Road with you,Noreen and Lisa Keating,I was the wee Scottish Celtic supporter that you opened the door to all those years ago. Hope you are well Gerry and still supporting the Hoops.HH!

Yes indeed.
A truly special man as a Republican I realise he must have got some flak from some in his own community
I met him about 30 yrs ago at a ceili in the Union Hall (is it still there?) on Shipquay St.
Good decent man.
Londonderry, he made it clear that his community was the Irish republicans
