Chris Hillman is one of the most underrated musicians ever. He made every band he was in better, and worked with some of the biggest egos in the business!
This is real music. Thank God for Chris Hillman & Roger Mcguinn. Miss you David Crosby. You should've been here. Thank you all for all the great music. The Byrds.
You know Chris Hillman just looks like the son every man would be proud to have. He is just an awesome person who can play and write songs like everyone would love to be able to. As a father I would be proud of him.
Chris Hillman has a nice voice. I never knew until now. I would have loved to see him and Roger do a Desperado-type album. I think they really could have given the Eagles good competition.
Have watched Sean Colvin, Roseanne Cash and Mary Chapin Carpenter perform this in the 1992 Dylan concert (on dvd or Youube that is). I believe this is what they watched or heard of back then. Roger may have taught them. Anyway, i love this performance bu Chris and Roger!! Been playing along to the video tonight. 02-06-24.

I don't care for how Dylan did it even though he wrote it. I don't care for him as an entertainer/singer at all but he is a great song writer...The Dirt band did a version of this song that's really good also.
They blend together so well -- but then they also did on Notorious Byrd Brothers ! ---Who knew - back when the shy Hillman stood in the background , almost hiding when the Byrds hit the scene - didn't write songs or talk much . What a pleasant surprise when Younger Than Yesterday came out .
I have all of Chris’s solo albums as well as the ones he made with the Desert Rose Band. He was also in an early group called The Hillmen with the fabulous late Vern Gosdin. Chris H is one of my all-time favorites.
this was just one of the miracles of the 1960s..rock musicians which included the blues etc channelled country and bluegrass music. just like that they captured the spirit of basic American country jug music. the grateful dead especially Jerry Garcia did the same thing.
'Pack up your money, pick up your tent, Dylan'! I love that McGuinn mistake that lives on in this song and the tributes that many have made referring to the mistake of swapping pack and pick...
I think the closest we’ll hear is when Marty Stuart plays anything and especially any time he’s collaborated with Roger and Chris. They did a tour in the ‘teens.
McGuinn sings "pack up your money and pick up your tent" by mistake n Dylan called him out when he sang "pick up your money and pack up your tent" then added "McGuinn" that's why McGuinn added Dylan.
I just checked that out. I had heard the version on "will the circle be unbroken" album where he tells about Dylan being laid up with a broken leg, but I love the part about him screwing up the lyrics and Dylan calling him out on it. I always wondered why he said "Dylan" after that line on that recording. I'm heading to Loveland Co to see Jimmy Ibbotson and John McEuen this Friday evening. Really looking forward to that!
Have you seen the live version from 1968 (LA I think), with Clarence White and John York? The footage is poor but it is by far the best version I have heard.
Don't bother with just one song from this wonderful album. Go out and buy it and listen to it all. YOU'LL BE DELIGHTED..... Will The Circle Be Unbroken volume 2".
Love the comments coming from people who blindly fell for the music back in the 60's and 70's and were not aware or interested as to what was really happening in the US music recording industry during that time period, or their $$$. Fools who did not see how they were being minupulated back then and NOW giving "explanations" for their failure to learn while trying to "sound wise". (My excuse? Forced to march to Bossa Nova music in high school which lead to an interest in World Music vs US rock's Fantasyland.)
Hard to believe that Chris was on 15 years old and Roger was 12 when they started the Byrds. But then again, they were so much older then they're younger then that now.
Chris Hillman is one of the most underrated musicians ever. He made every band he was in better, and worked with some of the biggest egos in the business!
Agree.
wish he was still touring
Loved him in Desert Rose Band. He graciously signed autographs after concerts. It was a joy to meet him.
Total class guy. Jim is also
Right

So well said...
the irony here, is, his father committed suicide in 1961.he talks about this a lot in his autobiography.
He was in SO many incredible bands, and he never turned into a drunk or a junkie.
You might want to read his book Time Between. Amazing human being...
Fantastic performance by all
It's after midnight, can't sleep, perhaps a dozen more listens, and see what happens. Love love love this version.
This is the absolute best version of this song! Thank you Hillman, McGuinn and the NGDB
Sweet! I see Roy Husky Jr there on the big bass fiddle. He was marvelous musician, and gone too soon. RIP
Roger McGuinn makes this the best rendition of this song ever !!!!! Thanks for this!!!!
I always have had a special place in my heart for Roger and Chris together.
Masters playing a Masterpiece from another Master.
Agree.
Mark OConnar on fiddle!
@@dontall71 you are correct about that and I did not notice him until you mentioned this and I took a second look at that video.
Chris Hillman has a nice voice. I never knew until now. I would have loved to see him and Roger do a Desperado-type album. I think they really could have given the Eagles good competition.

Love how he returns Dylans "namecheck". "Pick up your tent Dylan"
Hillman has a beautiful voice too. Blends prrfect with Mcguinn and Parson
Hillman has a beautiful voice. Purty and I always love him and his singing.
I wasn't a big fan of country western music when I was 20 (1975), I learned. Thanks for this post.
Simply beautiful , man . Two of my favorite musicians of all time
Clouds so swift, the rain won't lift
Gates won't close, the railings froze
So get your mind off wintertime
You ain't going nowhere
Ooooo ride me high
Tomorrows the day my bride's gonna come
Oooo are we gonna fly
Down in the easy chair
Buy me a flute, and a gun that shoots
Tail gates and substitutes
Strap yourself to a tree with roots
You ain't going nowhere
Ooooo ride me high
Tomorrows the day my bride's gonna come
Oooo are we gonna fly
Down in the easy chair
Well I don't care how many letters they sent
The morning came and the morning went
So pack up your money, and pick up your tent
You ain't going nowhere
Ooooo ride me high
Tomorrows the day my bride's gonna come
Oooo are we gonna fly
Down in the easy chair
And genghis khan he could not keep
All his men supplied with sleep
We'll climb that hill no matter how steep
When we get up to it
Ooooo ride me high
Tomorrows the day my bride's gonna come
Oooo are we gonna fly
Down in the easy chair
Ooooo ride me high
Tomorrows the day my bride's gonna come
Oooo are we gonna fly
Down in the easy chair
'Roger McGuinn had a twelve string guitar, that was like nothin' I've never heard'... .
My favorite is with the Scruggs family! Still cool
that line was changed from the dylan song, pick up your tent Dylan @1:36
Great cover of this Dylan tune. I love both Hillman & McGuinn.
I love Chris Holman.
He was so awesome at Great American Music Hall after he released an album in 1977.
I pray she will come home
It is great that it is recorded live and not overdubbed.
I would love to see this re-mastered on DVD.
what a roomful of great musicians...Chris said "you try to capture a live sound on tape"...I like when he said "I would like to do this all the time"
Talent always endures and creates history.
A piece of musical history. It's a great song , and I enjoyed hearing about the original recording experience !
The best version there is of this great song!
Gram always said Chris has a lead singer’s voice but always wanted to sing back up.
Great rendition. Love it!
Je préférais l’époque des Byrds ❤
I absolutely love this song. Both Dylan and McGuinn' versions!
I don't care for how Dylan did it even though he wrote it. I don't care for him as an entertainer/singer at all but he is a great song writer...The Dirt band did a version of this song that's really good also.
@@jchavins Counting Crows has a joyful version

Personally, I think Hillman has had and continues to have the most successful after Byrds career of them all.
He was definitely in the shadow of the big three there: McGuinn, Crosby and Clark.
I have all of Chris’s solo albums as well as the ones he made with the Desert Rose Band. He was also in an early group called The Hillmen with the fabulous late Vern Gosdin. Chris H is one of my all-time favorites.
Chris wasn’t into the spotlight he just liked doing good work he’s a musicians musician
Great to see a young Jerry Douglas on dobro
this was just one of the miracles of the 1960s..rock musicians which included the blues etc channelled country and bluegrass music. just like that they captured the spirit of basic American country jug music. the grateful dead especially Jerry Garcia did the same thing.
Best version ever
'Pack up your money, pick up your tent, Dylan'! I love that McGuinn mistake that lives on in this song and the tributes that many have made referring to the mistake of swapping pack and pick...
I love this song. And look at all the musicians! Never gets old. Thank you Bob Dylan! 🎼
love this song
That beautiful McGuinn tone.
Superb piece of history!
The memories this song brings..
This is excellent, thanks for posting rip Gram Parsons
His entire mission is encapsulated in this masterwork.
very nice cut.... the late great Roy Huskie Jr on bass makes it especially cool....
awesome performance; miss this sound.
I think the closest we’ll hear is when Marty Stuart plays anything and especially any time he’s collaborated with Roger and Chris. They did a tour in the ‘teens.
This Is Very Best Song Of Them 👍👍👍
McGuinn sings "pack up your money and pick up your tent" by mistake n Dylan called him out when he sang "pick up your money and pack up your tent" then added "McGuinn" that's why McGuinn added Dylan.
Margaret McIlroy : you recall that quote from the marty stuart gig where McGuinn was?
That's super interesting, I always wondered what that was about.
One of the greatest, most impactful albums ever.
"Two 8 track machines" 😆. Love that moment.
Nice !
My little Chris!! Blonde bombshell! ❤️❤️❤️
May be a Dylan song, but the Byrds owned it.
Masters at work
So Glad to see this !!! God Bless you .... and THANKS !!! Best Regards, Phil
A stand up bass is unusual to nonexistent in today's music.
Excellent ! Live in the studio.
Thanks Nick, let's see, I was six years old in 1968. I will definitely check that out. Great voices!
have not heard this in years.
Its Rapidly becoming A Long Time Ago.
I just checked that out. Right before he said "Dylan" it sounded like he did a brief Dylan impression...I think that's why he said it
or maybe just a joking jab at dylan, who mentions McGuinn in his version?
Superb!
Awesome song
Hey! It’s Jerry Douglas!
This is a super version of this song
Have you seen the live version from 1968 (LA I think), with Clarence White and John York? The footage is poor but it is by far the best version I have heard.
Great version! :o)
One of best versions
Gorgeous. XX
Beautiful
Very nice

glad this was a hit the second time around
Awesome

I see the great Jerry Douglas on dobro and Mark O'Connor on fiddle!
Crystal Longdon And Roy Huskey, Jr. on bass.
Roy Husky on Bass
Best version ever!
Wonderful!!!
..... love it.
This appears to me to be from the sessions from "Will The Circle Be Unbroken II" sessions by The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band".
wish chris would tour again.
Superb muscianship !
McGuinn's mullet is pretty fierce.
The late Roy Husky Jr. on bass.
Roger had a mullet? Great tune!
Pack up your money and pick up your tent...😄
Chris and Jim sound good together
thank you for posting!
Proper Americana 🎸🇺🇸❤️🇺🇸❤️💪🏻👊👍🏻❤️🎸
Couldn’t get no higher
Hard to believe that Chris was on 15 years old and Roger was 12 when they started the Byrds. But then again, they were so much older then they're younger then that now.
👍❤️super! ❤️👍
I think I see Randy Scruggs, too, sitting down in front,
YES! AWESOME
I keep waiting to hear Earl Scrugg's banjo in there but it never comes.
The great Roy Huskey Jr. on Bass. RIP
The original Circle album featured his father on bass, who also died early, just before completing the album.
Flux on dobro and O’Conner on fiddle, too. Quite a lineup.
Cool so cool
Superb, but the caption might mention Bob Dylan.
Looks a lot like Jimmy Ibbotson among the guitars.
Please post the rest of the VHS tape if you can! I always kicked myself for not snagging a copy when I had the chance!
Pick up your tent Dylan.
The controversy will continue so long as they are both alive.
