Just wanna take a moment to appreciate how consistent your groove was for the demo. Despite the multiple cuts, if I hadn't known there were any edits, i would've thought it was a continuous shot. Simple groove but consistency is really really really important, with or without the click.
I can highly recommend upcycled percussion. I use a few of their products, especially liking the beer cap ring and shaker. It's cool that you made your own but just felt tedious.
Personal faves: the bells on the snare and hi-hat gave it an awesome sizzle/jingle almost sounded like a muted tambouring AND the castanets on the snare and ride respectively like simultaneous claps and a rain stick 😂
I really liked the contrasting sounds between the bells on the ride, and then the castanets on the ride. They both sounded good, but especially switching back and forth. It’d be sick to have them both on the kit, and just ride them back and forth.
I liked the bottle caps (cool 'thwack' on the snare 6:49 and interesting 'breezy' effect on the ride 8:06) and the castanets (sizzle effect on the ride 8:23). Those were the two that I could see myself taking the time to make using the steps shown. To each their own of course; trust your own ears! Thanks again, rdavidr!
I bought like 50 brass bells for just a few bucks and did something similar. It works pretty well and costs so much less than buying a premade percussion-specific instrument.
Nice! All sound cool and can have a place in many different applications! Bottle cap hi hat was dope. I have made some stuff too and most of them don’t sound too good. Upcycled percussion does some great stuff and I own a shaker from them!
If you're trying to make a bunch of those wrapped bundles faster, look into a fly-tying tool called a "Bobbin" (it's not like a sewing bobbin). This tool is specifically made for quickly wrapping strings around a loose or bundled object. Since fishing flies are generally held in an articulating vice for wrapping, and your project uses floppy strings, you may wish to replace one of the strings with something that resembles a large diameter, single strand, "piano wire", as it's sold under in hobby shops for use as a "Model Rocket Launch Rod". Once you get the wrappings on it, attach a string to one end of the rod before pulling the completed assembly from the rod. This will reduce the amount of "re-dressing" you have to do to the wrappings, as some of the space will now be filled by the final string. I've never seen one of these "bobbins" with a size appropriate for this application, but they are simple enough - in concept - that it should be no problem to build one.
Something that occurred to me while watching you make the loops. Check out some videos about making your own bow strings for archery. I think there is a fixture/jig used to help make the loops for traditional archery equipment.
It would be cool to take multiple takes like you’re doing in the video, and randomly have each configuration come in and out throughout the track. They all sound good together, so it isn’t an extreme change, it would just be some ear candy, that most people wouldn’t notice, but I think they would hear it subconsciously.
i think bells sound best on both the hats and the ride the fish castanets sound good on the snare, a little more decay that the bells, but still a nice sharp attack
this has got me wishing I kept that mason jar full of beer bottle caps I had haha. I feel like the metal caps would look cool on the string, and I'm curious about the sound.
none of them sounded the way i thought they would sound, the bells and bottle caps sounded the best to me! The bells on the ride has potential to be used quite a bit, maybe take off a few of the bells and it'd be more usable?
My faves were bottle caps on the hat, bells on the snare, nut shells on the ride. That being said, I'll now exit the comments before I'm overcome by the compulsion to make a StepBrothers reference to the nutshells on the snare ... crap. I failed.
Drum Set Maintenance Course:
www.drumeo.com/rdavidr
please do a video of a monster drum set
What's that bossa nova music playing???
Do you ever plan on making a cocktail drum kit (stand up) with your spare parts.
What ride are you using in this video?
I love how the spray syncs up with the kick in the background music at 5:14
Can we just take a sec to admire the effort of lining three hits in the music with three sprays of the bottle at 5:15
Bravo David
"Busted those nuts" lol
😏
I have like a broken pc speaker so I cranked up the volume. It decided to fix itself the moment david said that.
Alain Garcia 🧢
@@rdavidr lmao
Thanks so much for the shout David! You are 100% correct, they are a pain in the ass to make :)
The castanets on the ride sound best because it sounds like bacon.
I do like myself a good bacon ride
“Mmm...Bacon!”
YES
I didn't know bacon had a sound, just by itself. I think you mean the SOUND of frying bacon.
I agree. If it was smaller (less castanets) I’d use it.
I loved the trashy sound of the brass on brass, bells on ride personally... raspy sustain so nice.
I totally agree.
That's the only one I'd use.
Has a kind old smokey be-bop kind of sound.

I was watching the snare and never noticed he was swapping them to the hats until the third cut 🤦🏼♂️. Consistency is key.
Agreed!
All that wrapping should help in the future when you cornrow your beard and add bells or castanets
I like your pug pic!
@@Ohms_vs_Draaggs Thanks straight off google, but I have had the pleasure of owning a few. AWESOME dogs!!!
The castanets on the ride sounded like an applause with every hit. Nice!
I wonder how many drumkeys he’s lost in his beard
😂😂😂😂😂
He doesn’t lose them, that’s where his emergency tools are (drumkeys, sticks, heads, spare drum) you name it

The sync on these little types of things are why David has 200k subs
The plastic caps on hi hats and ride are really nice.
It makes me want to try it at home.
Cheers from France
Really liked the bells on the ride. Made it sound like rain on a window.
I really like the castanets on the ride. It sounded like a electro sound.
I like the bottle caps on hi-hat and even on the snare. For electronic music and old style funk.
Greetings from Sardinia (Italy)
The bells on the snare really remind me of something you'd hear in Hey Arnold.
The bells on the ride were my favorite by far I loved the springy rattled sound you get kinda like rivets but not as intense
If you ever revisit this project, How about taking some metal bottle caps and bending them in half. You could add a BB or two inside of them.
I really liked the contrasting sounds between the bells on the ride, and then the castanets on the ride. They both sounded good, but especially switching back and forth. It’d be sick to have them both on the kit, and just ride them back and forth.
I loved the sizzle the bells added to the ride.
I really dig the bottle caps on the hi hats sounded _very_ cool.
I love how few of his words were in rhythm with the drumbeat at 0:28
the bottlecaps actually blew me away lol, i would have guessed that would be the worst one
overall they all sounded great dude! you rock!
1. I WANT HIS STUDIO & WORKSHOP SO BAD
2. Dave's a fucking GENIUS
I liked the bottle caps (cool 'thwack' on the snare 6:49 and interesting 'breezy' effect on the ride 8:06) and the castanets (sizzle effect on the ride 8:23). The castanets would be great for a foot jingle. You were spot on about the rest of them. Great job brother. Now I’ve got to save some bottle caps...
I bought like 50 brass bells for just a few bucks and did something similar. It works pretty well and costs so much less than buying a premade percussion-specific instrument.
bottle caps on the hats...!!! sounds almost like reversed audio with that chick :-)
Nice! All sound cool and can have a place in many different applications! Bottle cap hi hat was dope. I have made some stuff too and most of them don’t sound too good. Upcycled percussion does some great stuff and I own a shaker from them!
5:15 the spray with the beat looks so cool
I actually really liked the effect produced by the castanets on the ride. I could definitely use a sound like that somewhere.
I like the bottle caps on the hi-hat.
your drum sound and playing is very groovy, i love it
Castanets on the ride and the store bought ones on the snare is the winning combo
You know its gonna be a good day when Dave uploads
Already watched the drumset maintance 2x Dave!
love kick in time with the aerosol can.

something about your videos is so satisfying
Something that occurred to me while watching you make the loops. Check out some videos about making your own bow strings for archery. I think there is a fixture/jig used to help make the loops for traditional archery equipment.
Busting nuts and playing the hub theme. This is what I subbed for
Castanets on the ride is SICK!
Those bells on the hats sounded great to me.
Very nice man. Love the bottle cap one. I gotta try these at one of my shows.
digging the bottle caps for sure.

i really dig the bottle caps on the hihat.
You have such a great channel man. It is so salt of the earth. Thanks for doing what you do!
I thought the combo of plastic caps on the hat and castanets on the snare sounded fantastic!
Okay, but I' loving the bottlecaps on the ride. Might have to do this myself
On computer speakers the castanets on the ride and snare actually sounded musical and interesting. Same with the Indian bells, on both.
I love the look of your kit!
Love it when you make stuff!
Upcycled percussion on Instagram has beenndoing this for years. High quality rattles and shakers 100% recycled
Edit: oops lol
I liked the sound of the bells on the snare. For cymbals I still prefer the sizzle of my old wallet chain over anything else I've tried.
I'm convinced that rdavidr is essential to the drumming community. 🤷♂️
Great video! Those things are popular lately.
I feel they all work best as either a Shaker or on the Snare.
I like the bottle caps.
5:15 that was smooth
Enjoyed this. Thank you. 👍👍 ~Marz
All hail the beard!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 🧔
8:22 pretty cool fx.
I used beer bottle caps/ lids wired together as a rattle. Bud light sounds best.
6:32 so close, yet so far away.
“Busted those nuts”
Rdavidr please can you do a video of a monster drum kit thanks
those nutshells! great!!!
5:13 So satisfying
The songs in this one got me haard, so cute bro
I’ll bet you could use acorn shells! I’m might try that soon
The castanets on the ride it my fav ha.
Beautiful.Thanks I try this procedure
The Mighty Castanator!
Those hi hats! I need a pair. Except I don't know what they are : |
My guess: vintage Avedis, maybe 13"?
Theyre zildjian new beats. But they're old. You won't be able to find them for cheap
Super cool video
i think bells sound best on both the hats and the ride
the fish castanets sound good on the snare, a little more decay that the bells, but still a nice sharp attack
I thought the bells on the snare sounded sick!
I've been trying to figure this out for a while
I really like the bottle caps and the "bells" look great what cha mean!?
I like the sound of this one on snare 7:21
What hi hats are you using? Sound so good. New beats?
My mom came in my room at 2:47 and we had an interesting conversation conversation
do you make all the music thats in your videos? its always great
Do DIY of a wood block screwed into bass drum hoop
this has got me wishing I kept that mason jar full of beer bottle caps I had haha. I feel like the metal caps would look cool on the string, and I'm curious about the sound.
that cacho comes from Peru!
How about beer bottle caps?
Someone noticed that great sounding ride?
Which one is it?
Cheers
none of them sounded the way i thought they would sound, the bells and bottle caps sounded the best to me! The bells on the ride has potential to be used quite a bit, maybe take off a few of the bells and it'd be more usable?
Amazing!!!
Dave when will you use an evans head?
How do you attach it to your snare?
My faves were bottle caps on the hat, bells on the snare, nut shells on the ride. That being said, I'll now exit the comments before I'm overcome by the compulsion to make a StepBrothers reference to the nutshells on the snare ... crap. I failed.
