    Aaron, having been a nature and wildlife still photographer for over 50 years I have literally 10`s of thousands of images. Now before the Cloud flew in, my storage was on HD drives. The one thing that brought me to reality was that storing everything at home was risky. The solid-state HDs came along with more storage in a smaller space. I made copies and used my free bank safe deposit box in which to safely store my backups. A short version, a Western photographer stored everything in hard folders next to his computer. He went on a trip and came back 2 weeks later to find his log cabin had burnt to the ground with a total loss of everything he had done for the last 20 years. So I hope that you have taken steps to safely ensure all of your hard-earned work, in the event of a total loss of any kind. Love the behind the scenes stuff, and most of all I wish you and Madaline all the best in the coming weeks of your marriage.

      Yes i do! I store all originals, rough cuts, thumbnails and audio in label folders and store them on two separate external hard drives. In different places, one kept here in my safe which has a 2 hour fire rating

    • @KnifeParadoX
      @KnifeParadoX 7 месяцев назад

      I lost thousands of images, from my first images taken in photography to years into it. All due to poor file Managment and trusting a SSD too much. Dumb of me, never want anybody to go through that pain. Years of work gone!

    • @ThatsStillUs
      @ThatsStillUs 6 месяцев назад

      You are correct. I realized shortly after starting a channel this would be an issue. With the low cost of external storage the safety deposit box is a great addition

    Hi Aaron,
    Thank you for sharing the behind the scenes. I thought I would share my backup process that has been helpful for me over the years of post production work.
    1. Set up the project (iMovie, FCP, Premiere) in the Dropbox folder on my Mac
    2. Edit everything within this folder (exclude renders since they take space but can be rebuilt anytime)
    3. This automatically backs up to Dropbox and includes versioning
    4. Once completed you change the folder to "Make Online-Only" and it clears the space from your computer
    The advantages are:
    1. Versioning
    2. Direct download links to video and assets for clients
    3. Use of Dropbox's tagging to classify clips and dates for better tracking
    4. Easy cloud searchability from anywhere
    5. Restore deleted files for up to 30 days
    Cons:
    Generally the pricing of storage, can be an issue, but 3TB for online storage for $216 isn't too bad. Technically, while not redundant, it can be used as a backup since it is stored in Dropbox's Cloud and deleted files are kept for 30 days.

    Thanks Aaron, that was great!
    I created a channel this past July, still learning so much, but 90% of it comes from you, in the spearfishing/free-diving side and everything that surrounds it.
    This past weekend, I created a video, and I mentioned your channel, I hope this is ok. I said that all I am doing and still learning I am learning from you and I mentioned your channel, I hope this is ok and if you are, please let me know so I may add your channel link on the description. The reason I do that, is to thank you for all you have thought me.
    I am a 53 yo man, from Brazil came to US 34 years ago,…….used to Spearfish back in the 80s, surf, etc, back in Rio De Janeiro and always wanted to do that here, but life has up until now prevented me from it, kids, “ex wives” lol, but when I saw your channel and the way you face life, that re-ignited that passion and thanks to you, I was able to start doing. I do only shore dives for now, hopefully in a couple years to get my own boat.
    So really, from the bottom of my heart THANK YOU, my wife is loving it and so do my kids.
    God may keep blessing you two and also us with your videos.

    There are many hours of work that goes into editing a video. The part I hate is going through every video to see what is useable. It is tedious work especially when you use multiple cameras. I never knew you could edit the "Ad" popups. I'll have to start checking that. I don't do a lot of voice overs but there are times where it is needed. I ordered the microphone that you use to try it out. Great video Aaron! Thanks for the tips!

    Hey Arron
    I don’t know if you have noticed that each micro SD card have classifications to them for speed ect. This might help you with off loading and loading times. Also did you max out your Random Access Memory (RAM) in your new Mac Pro Mini so it will process and run faster for you. Also did you max out your GPU card, and your CPU as well. These 3 things can make a big difference on cutting down your speed times for waiting long periods of time.

    Awesome video man! Nice to see how you setup your videos and the whole process. I'm using davinci resolve for editing and it's great. It's free and lets you get a lot more in depth with the editing. I don't think imovie uses the full capacity of CPU and GPU, that might be why it's running slow, even on a good computer. Do you ever do any color grading to your underwater footage? Mine always turns out green, was wondering if that had something to do with the white balance or the editing. Anyways great video and keep em coming!

      after I upload to RUclips I export the entire folder (thumbnail, rough cut, and original files) to two separate hard drives.

      @@KeyWestWaterman I get so overwhelmed and lost trying to figure out do I export or copy footage to a hard drive from camera and don’t know how I’m suppose to go from there. I guess I can try and find some how to videos but just haven’t been up to figuring it out. You did show me some pointers on how you number the footage…. Cool! Thanks again bro!

    Thanks for the video. Do you take a still photo for your thumbnail or do you take a screen shot out of the video? How long start to finish does the typical video take to edit and upload to you tube?

      I normally take stills with my phone, and on average about 3 hours start to finish. depending on the episode sometimes longer

    Its crazy how it takes 3 hours or so to edit a 20 min video together. Sifting through hours of video to pick out the content is hugely time consuming.

      This is not an airport. No need to announce your departure. That opener is for the kids that watch the channel, and apparently to bother the adults that act like one.
