It is true, I was purchasing a new guitar at Guitar Center and tried 3 guitars.
A Gibson Les Paul Studio (~$1600 retail)
Epiphone Slash Les Paul Standard (The $800 big brother to the guitar in the video)
and the Epiphone 1959 Les Paul Standard Reissue. ($1000 retail) that has Gibson Burst Bucker pickups.
I played and swapped between the three for a couple hours before I made my decision based on what both felt and sounded the best. My decision was the only one with Epiphone pickups the Custom Alnico 2 Pro-buckers and the overall feel with that Slash neck profile etc. sounded better and felt better to play than both the other options. So I can say it is true, the Epiphones pickups can sometimes sound better than the Gibson options for sure! So as a result I bought the Epiphone Slash Les Paul Standard despite the fact that I could have bought the 1959 Les Paul standard or Les Paul Studio both having Gibson pickups, one actually being a Gibson product but the Slash LP Standard was just better in how it played, and sounded and looks absolutely stunning!
Btw I’m on my personal account that isn’t tied to anything musically right now but this is coming from someone who has a $10k studio, has played guitar since age 5, and although taking a break rn due to some personal life things but for the last couple years has produced countless songs for other individuals as a rec/mixing engineer so my ears are very well trained.
Glad I made the choice I did as it sounds unbelievable in the studio! A higher price isn’t always better for music gear, but its hard to know that when you don’t have coming up on 19 years of music experience, a trained ear and a well develop set of preferences in terms of instrument choice.
I tried gigging with one of these to see how it would perform and it sounded really good and I found that the neck pickup is amazing for doing lead parts when the tone is rolled all the way off! But it's a killer guitar for someone to start out on!
You are very on time and a perfectionist and also knowledgeable so thank you, I have the same guitar
Just got one of these used (brand new condition) for $130, is that a good deal? I haven’t even played it yet but damn, what a beautiful instrument. Good attention to detail Epiphone.🤘🏼
Had mine since 2016 i love it sounds great still holds tune no complaints. i have found it has quite a nice range of sound too lo fi jazzy and great edgy blues and rock sounds!
I found this kit randomly and bought it some years ago with a discount. Then I searched and understood it's the cheapest version of the afd les Paul , which actually impressed me. But the actual finish is in a Gibson model only and we talk about a lot of money. Now I'm thinking of buying the vermilion burst Epiphone cause the afd Epiphone has a very very similar colour with my starter Epiphone special kit guitar. And it doesn't make any sense getting it as an upgrade , at least the colour is not an upgrade, it's still the yellowish- orange
Thanks for this video mate, I'm gonna start playing again, I'm 24 and haven't played since I was 13 so am excited to get started again. Will probably start with this pack!
It really is a fantastic pack. I'm still very satisfied. Thanks for watching!
I've had mine going on 2 yrs no complaints with the way it plays and sounds. 1st thing to do is a good setup with new strings. Great around the house when I just want to mess around on the guitar . it won't replace Gibson LP but I won't get rid of it .
How much does it weigh if I may ask?
@@bluwng it's just under 8 lbs. know where as heavy as my standard
Mike, that Slash LP really came to you in overall good condition and except for maybe a few sharp fret ends there's really not much to do, it's pretty much ready to go out of the box.
NEW SUB! Glad to have run across your channel, we have similar lines of thinking about guitars and value. I have several Epi Specials. I passed up a great deal on one of these amber top AFD models a year or so ago (they were either $249 or $269 new at GC without all the stuff in the 'player pack') and I have kicked myself in the butt many times over it. Never seen one used out in the pawn shops and that may be saying something: these are keepers for most folks, evidently. Enjoyed this deep dive very much, thanks!
You are very welcome. Thanks for watching!
I stink at guitar but I bought this one back in 2018. It’s perfect for a beginner, best bang for buck out there imo
Got one last yr I changed the keystone knobs to the Jade like slash an the tone treb cap to an orange cap 0.22 instead of the 0.45 it comes with ,sounds more like slash guitar but would change anything else neck frets were fine one this is the toggle switch needs replaced it don’t select what u want all the time. My best guitar besides my Dean vx. Love this guitar got my money worth out of it.
Bought my one today . Very happy with the overall look of it . Cant afford a real Gibson Les paul 😅 As a long time fan of Guns n Roses and AFD being my best album . Im really excited about this guitar . $499 in New Zealand not bad for the price
Great review! Lot's to consider. Thanks.
Thanks for watching brother!
My second ever guitar was the Epiphone Snakepit in '99. It looked awesome but I didn't vibe with it, eventually sold it and I've seen them going for like, $1,200 used now. I wish this was around back then. I would have had no problems hanging onto it.
Newer Epiphones have got so much better. I had a 2010 SG that I got used for next to nothing. It just needed some fretwork, but was otherwise a total ringer.
I found that Guitar "left for death" on the Street, and i brang it home, it is in best condition, just one string i have replaced. Also i have the matching Amplifier.
Im But hurt but its because I slipped and fell on the ice. Rock on brother Mike
Lmao 🤣
I agree 100% any one that thinks the more cash we spend the better the guitar we get is Bull Hockey! LoL" I'm glad you are reviewing this one I been eying this one since they came out that's Awesome the pickups are killer ones out the box.. I love the look of this Les Paul a lot super low price tag on it 2.. I don't mind fret sprouts it gives me something to work on to set up to my liking... Hendrix liked 3/8th to 1/2" string height imagine that one a half inch high?! 😂 SRV liked a little less I think... i changed some of my guitars to a higher action and they sound better can't beat the clarity LoL" Sweet guitar FSB! Organic coconut oil I got to look in to that stuff 😎 Awesome video as always & honesty at its best also love how you roll FSB!
Thanks for watching brother. You would like this for sure. The Amp that comes with is is very nice. I expected it to be crap because the guitar gods mostly said it was crap compared to their 10,00000 watt Marshalls. It turned out to be a very very solid well build Amp that sounds great. Now mic it up and its absolutely beautiful sounding. The clean tones are spot on. 👌 Once again the gear God's are wrong. 🤪
@@FultonStreetBeats I laugh every time i get the Guitar shop's flyers and see the outrageous unnecessary custom signature guitars with the custom paint art price for 30 grand! LoL" what a joke you can buy a new car or a piece of recreational land up north or south for that 😂.. they aren't worth a quarter of that price it's crazy.. like you said you can only go so far on a guitar build your spot on that one FBS..
Really??? "Bull Hockey!"??
I haven't heard that term in years and years LOL
I truly thought that it was kind of a family thing to use.
Me and my Cousens wore that saying out when I was a kid.
Too funny to hear it again..
@@randyhaney5767 Hahahaha! Well I'd love to swear like a sailor but I keep it cool in public 😂
It is a Great player.. just went to Guitar center to get a drumhead I played the slash Wow it's Awesome! They had a used one for $179 I had to walk away my drums are first on the list! 😂
Just got, what seems one of the last new ones in the UK. Fret ends not as bad as thought. Put slinky's straight on, only thing is the selector for the treble pickup is a bit temperamental. Otherwise a stunning guitar, great action for me a returning intermediate player. I've had a Gibson before and this is my favourite guitar I've had. May take it in to have a pro look at it, but seems ok to me.😊
Another great video 🎉
NICE AXE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Good Video!!!!!!!!
Thank you 😊
@@FultonStreetBeats
Was looking for an honest review thanks!
I don't mind the bolt-on. Especially as someone who HAS broken a headstock 😉
The pickup selector is "odd", though I can see why they would put it where they did as a beginner guitar.
While that does bug me, the only thing that really irks me is the dot inlays. No LP should have dot inlays!
A serious question though: does it feel "weird" playing a flat LP? I've never played Specials.
I am looking for a guitar to teach my child on. I have been looking at Harley Benton SC's but since seeing this I may go for this kit.
But I would also prob use it for practice, or just strumming around the house, but I am curious if the feel would be a lot different than my regular LP's.
Does it matter if the oil is refined or unrefined?
Virgin Organic unrefined is the best.
I eventually bought the expensive Epiphone slash appetite burst because I just can’t get over the 2 knobs instead of 4 and the dots on the frets on a les Paul
@@slandaa that’s the guitar snob in you. Especially the fret marks as that makes no difference in playability. Enjoy your upgrades
Very informative video man.. as far as the coconut oil goes do you use refined or the pure virgin coconut oil?
Thanks in advance! 🤟
Thank You . I use Organic refined because it goes through a deodorizing process.
Great in depth review thanks alot. Can pick this up locally for 220 on special just bow or the les paul special satin e1 sbony vintage. What would your advice be?
Not that bothered about the additional extras with this package doesn't have the amp just bag, picks etc. Can get the kit minus amp for 220 or the ebony satin e1 for 149. Just looking for a les paul entry tempted to pay the additional if this guitar has alot better pickups etc. Thanks
Personally, I loved the sound of these pickups for blues and Jazz. To me it was fantastic. Unfortunately, I let it go. Now, I find myself wanting another. Ot never hurts having the Slash name on it. But every one of these guitars is very acceptable. Some do require a bit of fret end filing I have found.
great film brother!
what did you apply to the fingerboard after the lemonoil?
the 300D should be here friday bro!
Expert review
C I have a question where do you buy your coconut oil from? I have looked it up and I can't find that brand anywhere.
I get mine from Hannaford Foods
For the same price, should i get this or an epiphone les paul studio lt?
I doubt that you would remember, That in previous postings;
I have clarified my feelings about the GibsonOfaB!t(h corporation and their Bastard companies.
I will qualify that with, A good guitar is a good guitar.
And the afore mentioned company; has many many outstanding guitars to their name; as have their subsidiaries.
And I have no problem buying used ones. From a private seller,
But the price is usually too prohibitive for what you are actually getting.
Case in point...This very guitar ..
The asking price for the guitar alone or with strap and gig bag "used"?
Is generally more than the new with amp bundle,
You have acquired and are featuring now,
Just one more reason to steer clear of " the GibsonOfaB!t(h corporation and their Bastard companies." Used or New..
(Just an opinion from someone that doesn't matter anyway)
Peace Out...And sorry for the long diatribe..
I totally understand. Believe me, I've had my fair share bad words with Gibson. I would scare you to know just how many companies they are involved with. Even pickup companies. Maybe I can do a video about it sometime .
Never saw anyone use coconut oil lol Lemon oil with Steel Wool
Now you have
Hate seeing that type of fretboard on an LP
Why is this review necessary? This isn't the first "Slash" Epiphone. It's the second nearly identical model. Same problems, same price range. I bought the first series at guitar center a long time ago.
It's necessary because it's my job here on RUclips review the guitars I receive. That's what this channel is for. Unbiased reviews and insights.
It's good to get fresher and newer reviews. I dont know if a same guitar from a review made 5 years ago is now worth the money or not.
i have one..had it for 5 months now, i think it's brill for the price after checking out a lot of reviews before i bought one, ..if you want to go buy expensive Gibson's etc for the head stock logo then please proceed to buy with your hard on..but dont be a troll on any good channel to try to get a result for your insults..just stroke yourself and feel good about being one of life's turds 🤘
yes I am a subscriber to this brill channel and LOVED this review as many others will, who are thinking about buying this guitar and are hitting on lots of reviews to make their choice!
Epiphones are made to much, much higher quality now. I speak from experience.
The review is fine what is not necessary you watching it if you don't want to.
