- Yes! At long last! A CBC Newfoundland sign-off from late April 26, 1993! And exactly as you remembered it.
A word of note: if you were kicking yourself not knowing some of the music that ran during the test pattern, this particular piece is an excerpt from "L'Oggetto" by Giancarlo Nicolai and Regula Neuhaus. Развлечения
Good old days. Unreal number of transmitters, sadly not operating anymore.
My goal as a kid was often staying up late enough to see the end of the TV. Thanks for the memories!
The music during the color bars is so.majestic.
Both anthems are beautiful. God guard thee Newfoundland. God bless Canada!
This is easily my favorite CBC sign off, this along with other videos have generated an outsiders interest in Newfoundland and Labrador. I used it as a design base for my sign off mock. :)
I saw your mock up and it sucked! What a rip off artist you are!
Beautiful piece at the end! No singing, just calm, peaceful music.
I am in love with the music at the end! Perfect for a late night!
thetoolbox112394 The music was from CBC Radio 2 St Johns.
***** Thanks! It is beautiful. I live in the United States and was not around in 1993. I would have loved to hear it on TV!
Gotta love that music during the test pattern!
Thunderbirds501 Yes, The Perfect Late Night Music
Love the classy music over the colour bars! Nice touch by the CBC! Our sign-offs in America were usually so harsh with an end-of-the-world quality. The arrangement of "O Canada" was very moving. Thanks for sharing these gems!
Analog Child In america, all color bars need to arrange a tone as a LAW But some networks in america broke it.
Cam Frazer Because I felt it really represents the era I'm so fond of. :)
No, haha, I was only 10 when that happened! I just used a screenshot as my avatar for laughs.
Analog Child btw dude if u don't know, the variation of O Canada was those of the 1978 Montreal rendition, hence the O Canada video has some videos of Montreal and the Olympics there.
Some stations do (or did) use music.
Thank you for this. Especially god guard thee newfoundland.
8 transmitters on the peninsula, 15 in the south, 16 in the east, 18 in the midlands, 13 in the west, 7 in the north (all in Newfoundland)
10 in Labrador proper (9 without St. Lewis)
Actually, it's spelled "St. Lewis". St. Louis is somewhere else.
Oh, I knew that.

CBC loved those flea powered transmitters. Apparently it is cheaper than a handful of higher powered ones...
@@someguy23475 Depending on the local terrain low powered transmitters were probably the only way to ensure reliable reception in many areas.
This is the sign-off for the CBC's St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador Station CBNT Channel 8, which we never get to see on our Satellite Dish years ago. And it was the only station unaffected by the transition in Network Affiliations serving St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, after CJON-TV became an independent station, after it was disaffiliated from CTV Television Network in the Fall of 2002.
I recently obtained a bunch of videotapes from a relative, some containing several movies that aired as during the old CBC Late Night block around 1990-92. I looked through one such tape and at the end of a movie found part of an EVEN OLDER signoff which was a simple scrolling list of the CBC stations in Newfoundland. A shame that it was taped over with another CBC Late Night movie. Since there were a bunch of old movies recorded from that block, I'm sure that there might be a complete version somewhere.
FragglevisionReturns I would love to see that partial sign-off.
I'm sure that the full version might be on one of those tapes... there was a LOT of movies from that block on those tapes
FragglevisionReturns My fingers are crossed in the hopes that you manage to find that full version.
I did eventually, at the end of a 1991 showing of the movie "Frontier Gal". I hope to get that ripped and uploaded in the near future.
Let me know when it's up. (personal note: if you can do it in 640x480, I can transfer it to my phone)
3:54 - "The Ode to Newfoundland" is the provincial anthem of Newfoundland and Labrador.
8 transmitters on the peninsula, 15 in the south, 17 in the east, 18 in the midlands, 13 in the west, 7 in the north (all in Newfoundland)
10 in Labrador proper (9 without St. Louis)
Correct
now that's what I call a sign off
This sign-off was probably made years prior because it still has the original CBC logo at the end.
That logo was used until 1992, in monochrome blue. It stands to reason the new logo had not been rolled out completely yet as it would have been new that year.
I remember that Ode to Newfoundland segment from the late 80s. I wonder when it originated?
That One has the most transmitter site in Newfoundland...
Watched alot of Cagney, Flynn, and Bogart movie on CBC back then and before........
Can I ask what the piece of music between the Canadian Anthem and the Colour Bars. Thanks in Advance or if alread answered.
That would be the "Ode to Newfoundland", our national anthem when we used to be a country (before becoming a province in 1949).
Glenn Tilley used to be the anchor of 'Here and Now', the CBC regional TV newscast for Newfoundland and Labrador...I wonder where he is now...
He’s an executive producer for arts entertainment and music at CBC St. John’s Newfoundland.
@@wolfywolf2sda I see.
@@wolfywolf2sda thats a different man with the same name.
I stayed up like that too at Grandfather's...I secretly prayed for all Canada to remain united and 'Under CHRIST' no matter what.

Anyone here because of Oddity Archive? Just me? Hmmm.
On the caption after the transmitter list it just says CBC Newfoundland and not CBC Newfoundland and Labrador. Was it not a shared service for the two areas?
Mark Pentler Labrador was a part of CRC north to my knowledge.
the name of our province was newfoundland until 1999 and then the provincial government renamed our province to newfoundland and labrador, back then cbc had main operations including master control from st. john's and operations in corner brook at cbyt, happy valley goose bay had cblt for labrador, today the only thing we do in st. john's is provide local news on tv, websites, and local cbc radio, corner brook cbyt and cblt for labrador 100% simulcast cbnt, master control and all other operations are done from toronto, very different from when each station did its own individual operations until september 2000.
I swear i'm the only one who was singing along with Ode to Newfoundland 🤔
No me as well.
The very end of the CBC Newfoundland had the TWANG/sound of new age music. "I doubt that you would be making fun of us Canadians for long, once you find out that all odmf you South Park animation crew members are getting away with being really crass. Thus you'll find out just how redundant we are on making some improvements. We also noticed that you're getting away with insulting evety country in the world. For us, progress is everything" 🌎
I thought it would be like a carbon copy of BBC 1, being a former British colony.
Chris Henniker If you ask me, CBC's sign offs are more American-style. However, Radio-Canada's sign offs are more European-style, and are a lot more like the BBC.
Are you American? LOL
sweiland75 No, English, to be precise.
By tundern jesus. To quote my dad.
What is the name of the national anthem that plays after the sign-off?
EricEbac22 "O Canada" is the national anthem, while "The Ode to Newfoundland" is the provincial anthem.
Shane Spencer Hmm; I didn't know that the provinces had their own anthems. I know the name of the national anthem, "O Canada", but as I said I never knew that the provinces had anthems of their own, just like half the states here in the United States have songs/anthems of their own.
I see.
EricEbac22 I am from Saskatchewan and we don't have an anthem
What is the song that plays right after O Canada, but before the bars?
Ode To Newfoundland
thank you. It is a very pretty song. Do the other provinces have their own songs?
Yes They Do! 😊
School Squad I'll have to look them up. 😊
Look For Québécois Anthem! Gens Du Pays!
Was that movie A Tale of Two Cities?
"Return of the Scarlet Pimpernel" (1937) was the film.
retronewfoundland I thought it was the other because I saw Robespierre in the cast.
Seems like too many transmitters in such a small place.
Due to the hills in Newfoundland.
@@doppelganger3992 I could see how that could necessitate that many towers due to elevation
Do you have any videos from RFO saint pierre et miquelon?
3:55
The last couple of seconds of video is of the screen going black. Is that when they cut the transmitter?
the local cable company always did that, on satellite it would be colour bars all night til 6:15 am.
"random island"
@@ChristopherSobieniak nonono I'm just making fun of it!!
