Learned about him studying architecture in High School; fascinated ever since ❤

I can't find the words to thank you enough for having uploaded this Documentary to RUclips, it's undoubtedly one of the best Art Documentaries I've ever watched !!!

Maurits Escher was above genius - Could you imagine if he took architecture as his career - Steps going up - at the same time - going down - Emerging inside out & outside in - Eventually twisting upside down - Finally taking shape - Downside Up -

This is pretty good too.
Is Kove to cosit rhat jouee ot rent it hmm HELLO hmm???
Joe, I've just read your suggestion, I'll certainly do so , thank you so very much !!!
the 5 people disliking this video are still trapped in the Esher staircase :(
22 are now stuck in Escher's portrayal of hell.
These dislikes could have been done by mistake, they are forgivable.
good one
maybe they disliked the adverts that are so obtrusive and loud.......
i am trapped on that staircase with Spike Milligan. its 4 o'clock
They definitely did a great job putting this documentary about M.C. Escher together.
A creative genius that 'transformed' art-definitely ahead of his time!
No. MCE ok. Most people living in the past.
All great souls show us the world for what it is...
And it takes guts to stand and stair......
In my opinion He was not only a great artist he was prophetic .
Very pleasant professional voice-over by Tony Wilkinson
Oh man. What an amazing man he was. Thank you for sharing this amazing documentary.
A singular perspective. Thank you uploader, a thank you so, Mr. Escher. Breathtaking.
Been a fan since the early 70's... Thanks !!!
This makes me feel so much better about myself, he kept drawing and drawing even tho he didn't have a job and he didn't care about society's pressures and just followed his instinct, he never gave up and eventually became a master at his medium which allowed him to focus on ideas later on, the combination of his skill + passion for geometry and his hard work made his work masterpieces, but it took him a lifetime, he only started to get recognition towards the end of his life. I just feel bad for the lack of sensitivity towards his depressed wife, probably caused by the lack of vitamin D which is common in the Netherlands and possibly menopause plus complete lack of attention from him...
Been a fan since I was a child. Always thought there was a sadness to his work. This documentary shed light on that.
Agreed.
Dream/Reality
The Artist asks of YOU where to draw the line
His early ones really showed that. Big time isolation-related depression in some of those. The smoking skull with top hat is still up there for me, along with the clouds in that landscape one.
This is a great documentary, which I've only just stumbled across by chance. I've always loved Escher's work, and it's good to see him treated so sympathetically. I also enjoyed the surreal subtitles -particularly bizarre while Escher is speaking in Dutch. I intend to transcribe these, and in the process invent an entirely new kind of poetry. What a deaf person would make of the film doesn't bear thinking about. Thank you very much for making the film available.
I am amazed at the exquisite precision of his works, so clever and sometimes with a sense of humor. He's one of a kind!
great documentary. Little details such as Escher's self-loathing notes regarding his cigarette smoking in his diaries lent this great artistic mind much humane touch.
Rest in peace 🙏
M.C. Escher

27 March 1972⚘
Beautiful film. Escher said that it would be hard to say why he like the Italian landscape but to someone with more distance it seems obvious that the verticality of it, standing up like a canvas in front of one and displaying a collection of all kinds of contrasting textures and shapes, would have appealed to his sensibility, in contrast to the Dutch landscape, which is all flat.
And very little of that boring snow
well there's the Beekse Bergen, surely these are mountains
Some countries have more respect for old architecture. Italy for example.
@@candidogalicia6502 The Dutch have more respect for their native old architecture than almost any other country in the world. Cities like Amsterdam, Leiden and Haarlem are some of the best preserved 16th and 17th century cities in the entire world. Visit Haarlem and you are literally walking in a museum time capsule of a centuries old city that has been lovingly maintained for centuries by the local people. Escher as a Dutchman grew up with this Dutch mindset of looking at and respecting their architectural history.
Thank you for uploading this documentary. Enlightening.
This video was very well done...Escher has always intrigued me. What a genius...what an artist. I loved every minute of learning about this incredible artist. Thank you!
How can things so intricate and accurate be carved from wood! My absolute idol!
great job, thanks for producing this documentary
I am amazed at the breadth of his skills, as artists nowadays need a team of people, each specializing in a discrete task, yet MCE could do it all: vision, drafts on paper, carving the block from wood, and printing copies onto paper. Amazing dude.
Thank you for this documentary, it helped a lot with my artproject inspired by Escher!!
What an interesting figure! Thank you for sharing this documentary with us.
Fantastic documentary of one of the greatest artists that ever lived!
Thank you, thank you so much for this!
What an amazing man and an amazing documentary. Thanks for posting.
A true visionary artist! He actually foresaw (and influenced) the digital imaging we see today.
THANKS FOR posting!!
always admired his work, a great insight in his personality this, thanks
this documentary was great, love the notes from his journal, humane underneath it all but extremely dedicated to his work
GREAT Documentary. i enjoyed every minute of it
THANK YOU.
Amazing ducomentary, thank you for uploading
Excellent video. Pure long-living intense creativity is not always accepted/understood by a mate. Especially, if the mate has no passion of her/his own. Most often, a true genius works alone. Thank you for sharing this video! USA
The best doc on M.C.E. So far for me.
Excellent soundtrack to accompany this genius…🥸😇😈
What a wonderful film! thankyou.
Excellent video. Thanks much.
The important lesson here is that if you wish to be a great artist, it helps to have wealthy parents.
@Wenceslao Futanaki Very well said.
it is generally quite helpful in life to be moneyed
Wow! Thank you!
Back in the 1990's our shop use to sell his t-shirts. At first I really didn't like them. Then I started looking at his work. And I thought WoW, these are extremely awesome!!!
The auto caps are so off that at 25:09 I turned them off in order to be able to see the original caps.
I usually avoid watching capless vids.
But I have many young and old fond memories of his fantastic art.
His art is like a book that is so interesting that you can't stop reading it even though you can't understand half of it.
So far the the works shown
here - that I've never seen before have been very worth watching.
He is and will always be my original favorite artist, as an artist...i never wanted to immitate just harness the sight of his abstract works if possible
BEAUTIFUL!
THANX
incredible how this amazing and so well produced documentary of this HUGE artist like Escher have got so few visits, this should be on he top 100

Wonderful documentary. Could not be better., thank you...but had to smile at some of the over-lapping translations.
Exquisite execution of very highly complex perspectives, this work is of true genius. It's also devoid of any human connection. He was a genius, and also very alienated.
What a genius, can’t wait for the release of the new doc!!!!
fantastic video, Escher is one of my favorites
Watching a documentary like this makes me proud to be European but also make me sad seeing it decline so rapidly.
As long as we are bound by time, Escher shall remain ahead of it.
Excellent documentary about this genius Escher was. Grazie
Thanks lovely film insightful
An creative genius... I love his work...
Thank you !!!!
Great doco, I want to be more like MC!
An unbelievable genius like the Einstein of art, full of intricate puzzles
how can someone dislike M.C Escher his so underrated
He is still looked down on in the ART world today!
@Wenceslao Futanaki Very true, although I work in the field of art myself. ;)
@@g.j.koster1986 Yes, but we have to admit that his figures were twee, reeking of the petit bourgeois he hailed from. I have never quite understood why he made these fantastic metamorphic landscapes and then peopled them with garden gnomes and giggling newts. My best hunch is that he actually had a keen appreciation of high art and this was his way of needling the pretence that permeates that world.
You are always awesome Kate.
Mc Escher was a genious , unevened to this very day ...He gave birth to so many artistic Ideas . I have been inspired by Escher many a time and I think any real artist was as well .Another Fresian.
I think I can really understand what Escher was trying to show us with his magnificent creations. The world is all of a certain substance--a crystalline substance of which is of magnificent structure, and from this mathematical structure fractals out something infinitely into the endless complexity of chaos. And perhaps the same is to be said about ourselves?
Intriguing subject matter presented in a quirky way enjoyable to say the least. Been a fan since I bought three prints at a very minimal cost, the hands drawing each other, classic night and day and mud puddle. I still can't understand the math but after a hoot I stare at them for hours!
Jess, The light grey subtitles are 'burned' into the video, but you can turn off the "computer-generated" ones. While your mouse is hovering over the video, in the bottom right there should be a "CC" icon. Just click on it and the subtitles will disappear (click on it again to get them back). [ Note: The "CC" icon may not appear until after playing the video for a minute or so ].
M C Escher was such an amazing man . Defying gravity and perspective as he did . He could make anything climb from his ink well ,himself inluded
I love the subtitles for when Escher is speaking XD
Thank you👍🇳🇿
Wow that documentary was very well done & interesting. 👍🏆🙋
Amazing film about a genius there is no like m.c. Escher and there will never be anyone like m.c. Escher
this film moves me deeply.
My favorite artist hands down style and substance
Just his skill at carving is beyond me. But to have conceived such things that cannot be and carved them... Esher is the very picture of being in class by himself.
Ar 17:54 you can see the wooden bird model (on the table) that will later be the subject of his "Another World."
Beautiful 🤟🏾❤❤❤🔥🔥🔥🔥
in eighth grade, my geometry teacher had that mc escher sketch of a man holding a silver ball-the one where it gives the room a fisheye-like perspective-and i sat to the far right and front of the room for two quarters, so every time i looked forward i was staring at it. i liked that class because the teacher was really funny and i got to hear the older kids making jokes and almost feel included in it, and i remember i used to check out and just stare at the artwork while i thought of a life for that man. i used to walk up from the middle school campus alone and because i have short legs and would take my time so it usually took me the whole five minute passing period. in the narrow walkway behind the softball field on the way up i would pause or sit or look up, and i had two imaginary friends that would join me-a bird and a butterfly-and in my head i’d tell them all about the class, the picture, how the clock ticked. i didn’t know what the sketch was from or who it was by until i went to new york later that year and saw a great big billboard with it and “M.C. Escher” written across as well, and i almost felt like my little imaginary world got the surprise spoiled. anyway, after eighth grade i let the imaginary friends fly away so i could grow up a little bit, and about a full year later from the new york trip i sat in the same classroom for some student council business and read the teacher’s huge book about mc escher when she left the room. i haven’t thought of him in a while, but when i do, i think of the stories i would invent about that picture, and new york, and 8th grade, and the start of high school, and now i’m here. Very interesting indeed
Girl ain’t no one gonna read this 1200 word essay double spaced times new Roman size 12 font
Wonderful.
Absolutely brilliant film
new release coming 5/4/2021 on blu ray from Kino Lorber of 2019 documentary "M.C. Escher: Journey To Infinity"
like the piece MC Esher did called "Ascending"
Maurits Cornelis Escher (1898-1972)
Rest in peace.
Wow...what a fascinating artist
My favourite artist
If he had access to computer graphics I guess his work would have been much more amazing. But it is already. I love this documentary
Imagine what would have happened if he'd found out about fractals.
Just fascinating!!
Phenomenal Score to this. Ron Ford according to the credits? Anyone any more info or can identify any other music used throughout?
It almost seams like his drawings were all first attempts without any scraps or mistakes.
"Life with a capitol L"

This sounds like the nervous laughter of a man who is hiding something, and I love that so much. What a weird guy.
SOMEONE HAS TINKERED WITH SUBTITLES - I wonder if the maker might fix this since it is otherwise a very interesting piece.
This was great! A happy ending too!
A genius and a great inspiration.
When I started dating my now fiance I told him good luck bc mc Escher doesn't have shit on my walls... And sadly he didn't get it... This was more of a joke than truth but still... I love this man, artist, inspiration!
awesome
Maurits Escher was above genius - Could you imagine if he took architecture as his career - Steps going up - at the same time - going down - Emerging inside out & outside in - Eventually twisting upside down - Finally taking shape - Downside Up -
One of the very few great artists that modern times brought to us.
A giant among insects.
Hi guys, could someone of you tell me the last song in this video? As well as with Escher, I got in love with that song as well...
Goldberg variations by J.S Bach
Intriguing bio.
Why did they take such a creepy approach with the script and the music in this documentary? It's eerie AF, like a horror movie
At 7:05 read the bottom line of captioning text.
One of my fav. artists. he was so lucky to have the right teacher. if you see De Mesquita (teacher) artworks you see how much he was the right man in the right place. as Aristotelis and Pluto used to say, teaching is the most important job in classic society, unfortunately today teaching is one of the less payed and rewarded jobs, that shows the decadence of our society.
