I liked so much about this video: Drawing it out at the beginning; the road trip; slow-mo wood throw; love the back; ending with latch closing. The functionality is great!
Blackberry Hideout Thanks Jess! Wasn't sure how that would fly but so far it seems to be good! The music I experimented with and I think the voice over was a little inconsistent but hey... progress right! Joe
Great job! I have tons of pallet wood, I have feelers out (friends and family) that alert me if they see any that might be available. I also have salvaged a friends entire cedar fence when it was replaced. The contractor was so thrilled that he didn't have to haul the wood off that he also added some old tongue and groove bead boards to the pile.
Good Joe, appreciate it. Enjoy your channel. I particularly liked the pallet wood projects, fire pit, galvanized corrugated panel planter beds, and the gabon walls. Also, thanks for the tour of your shop and tools, and for the outfit that your get reconditioned tools from...I'm already invested in milwaukees 12 and 18v batteries and Ryobis 18v batteries...thanks again, Vic
+sournote28 No prob Vic! Thanks so much! Sound like you've got a great tool collection in the works... I've always heard great things about milwaukees:) Joe
Fantastic work! I just moved to Tucson myself and love making these sort of things. I just made a farm table for my family this past weekend. Looking forward to more of your videos.
Bruce A. Ulrich Thanks Bruce! I like the contrast too.... really brought the rustic character back in since the main wood was so new looking:) Hope you recognized some stuff in the super fast drive through portion:) Joe
+Nic Ames Thanks Nic! I know.. random motorcycle…lol…it was for my distaste of painting and sanding… and I thought it'd be funny;) Thanks for watching! Joe
bro you are the pallet master. I'm so exhausted from working all these hours. I can't wait for winter usually get laid off for three to four months. can't wait to start a fire in the garage and get my hands on some woodworking tools instead of a torch and welder. you do amaze me on what you come up with. take care bud
+yoopersurvival Hey Yoop! You may not want to do it on your off time.. but some projects with welding would be cool to see. I suck at welding and like to see what good welders come up with. But it is funny to hear you wanting winter to come… like me wanting summer to come;) But you're are right the down time and a fire with some projects in the garage sounds like good times to me:) Joe
Joe,.... you make it look soooo simple.. Aunt B is impressed... as usual (so am I)... I am getting the funny feeling that she is thinking I should be doing things... You set the bar high bud....
+Randy Rought hahaha... you're giving me too much credit... I got lucky in that pallet I found was in near mint condition! Made the build much easier! And I here you on the 'hints'... Taryn has been hinting about a place to put her essential oils for a while now... I had to check it off the list:) Joe
Hi Joe, this is a better view of your outdoor work bench. A month ago I requested that you do a video of the construction details of the work bench. Hope you haven't forgotten. Great project by the way using pallet wood...free hardwood is always good...thanks, Vic
+sournote28 hahaha… Hey Vic, it's definitely not forgotten! I was in the process of adding an extension/clamping component to the table and I wanted to wait to do the video until I finished… and umm…it's kinda half way done… sorry, I got consumed on the pallet projects and that went on the back burner. But it's definitely going to be done… just not as quick as I originally thought:) Again, sorry... it is in the plans and not forgotten. Soon though..soon:) Joe
+yack f zay Thanks YFZ... and you're right about the pallets... this one has to be one of the best pallets I've ever found! It wasn't hardwood, but it sure is nice to work with non-warped stuff!
It is so nice to see another southwestern based woodworker. I found your channel from your mesquite handle knife, here in New Mexico it is plentiful but there isn't much on RUclips so thank you!
T&N Woodworks Thanks TN! The funny thing is that the main body was made with wood so new looking that I just had to get that 'rustic' look in there some how! thanks for watching:) Joe
The mesh came out a lot better than I was expecting. Was keen to see how the hinges went on though, that's something I always struggle with. Great job!
Robin Lewis Thanks Robin! The hinges weren't too bad but i did recess them on each side a tiny bit with a chisel... but other than that nothing too special. thanks for watching!
First , Thank You Slowvannah Farms for sharing the Challenge, and Thank you homesteadonomics for joining in the Pallet Challenge, Beautiful Cabinet, and I am sure it will get a lot of use, Best of Luck
***** Thanks for the challenge Sterling! It was fun and thanks for bringing more awareness to the WWP:) btw... really like your channel and I'm glad Slowvannah Farms brought me over:) Joe
I have to keep my wife from seeing this, she will want one, lol... Grits in the pantry! You choose the best music for your vids... Have a Blessed one my friend...
+CG Louisiana Thanks CG! She likes it a lot... and grits will be perfect for it... as a matter of fact I had grits a couple mornings ago. My daughter and I eat them... wife not so much;)
Cactus! workshop Thanks Cactus WS! btw... just looked at your channel (name got me;) and it looks like you have some great stuff... gonna go watch the chisel sharpener jig videos now:) Joe
Joe...a fella from LA gotta have a truck!!! Great job & great vid. I have hundreds of pallets in my warehouse, but dont take the time to utilize my resources.
+Danny Fox hahaha… I know.. the guys at work always tell me that… but I live 50miles from work and it's just not in the finances right now… but hopefully soon:) Joe
+Slightly Rednecked Thanks SR! Yes, sometimes they can be hard to come by... I like to try to hit up the businesses that get pallets in less often... like every quarter or so. The companies that get them regularly usually have everybody in the world going there OR they have a pallet pick up service.
RetroWeld Thanks Douglas! I'm just trying to get to your level of editing:) I was thinking about doing your trick during the painting process where you showed the unfinished look, then the can, and when the can is pulled away the item is painted... but it was pretty hot out and I was just going a fast as I could...thanks for watching! Joe
Thats not a bad idea, im still working up to the vids, but im close to starting i think! Haha Interested to see what happens with the new project, sounds interesting!
+gavin murray Well, I'll be excited to see it! Just remember… content is key… if the video isn't perfect don't worry. As long as you have good content people will watch:) and yes… lets hope it goes well, otherwise I will have spent several hours on something for nothing..lol!
+Stef Duncan Thanks Stef! Order is received... I'll send the bill;) OR... or send lucas up here and I'll outfit him with some pallet pieces to build one. Pretty easy project and I'm sure he'd make a great one! Joe
I just watched your video. Nice work. Just to let you know an awesome way to get some pallets. Toyota has a leaf spring recall right now and the new springs come in an awesome crate. A lot of large pieces. You should go by and see if you can snag a crate or two. Like I said they are large pieces. Wish I could add a pic to this message to show you.
Thanks Michael! I actually just called my local toyota dealership and they said they'd save a few for me! Thank you! The guy I spoke to actually had been using them for projects around his place.... I'm hoping he wasn't too bummed that some random guy called in and is trying to get his project lumber;) thanks again and you might see it on a video if they do indeed save some! Joe
Canadian Sasquatch Thanks CSB! Yeah I wasn't sure if people would like that part but I just figured it'd add some interest to the vid.... glad you liked it! PS- I'm going to be doing a prickly pear video soon.... then after that I'm hoping to do the wine or mead:) Joe
Oooo! Nice! I need to rack my prickly pear mead this weekend. And my atomic fireball mead as well needs racking, I'm a couple weeks behind on that now :/ Stupid backs causing problems!
+diy man glen Thanks DMG! Ironically the lock mechanism was my stumbling point... I wanted to do something unique and clean looking... but literally took a day of it sitting there for me to come up with that simple solution...hahaha:) Thanks for watching! Joe
+diy man glen So true... I made a pallet picture shelf with a secret compartment (for a whisky bottle;) and the latch mechanism stayed on my mind for days and then the simplest solution ended up being the best! A Magnet pulls a 'decorative' nail out of the wood to release the door. And that after hours of playing with twisting/levering/catch type mechanism...hahaha.... but in the end it was the most satisfying part:) Joe
Great project. Especially liked the ride through the Old Pueblo! I'm missing southern AZ. Do you ask permission to take the pallets? Is there an "etiquette" to it? Bear Down!
Henry Pu Yi Thanks Henry! Glad you liked the drive through! I wasn't sure if people would like it or not but I figured it is a big part of getting pallets. As for the etiquette aspect... absolutely... I always go to the front desk of the business and ask first. Some reuse their pallets and want to keep them and others keep certain ones and allow you to take the 'older' ones... and then others (my favorites!), are happy that you are taking the pallets off their hands. I also check craigslist too... but for the most part I go back to the places that I've collected from before. And the final part of the etiquette piece is that I try not to make a mess and leave the remaining pallets in a neat and orderly fashion. Maybe this will be a video idea...hmmm;) Joe
Rob Shamel Thanks Rob! My wife and I really like the contrast..... of course I kinda had to since the first pallet was made with such nice looking wood... had to get the rustic in there somehow:) Joe
Cool you must live near tucson. Im in tucson right now for training for work. It sure is a beautiful town. Completely different than my hometown in iowa
+twistedup123 Yep, I'm south of Tucson by about 30 minutes or so. My dad actually used to live in Osceola IA for a while too:) What kind of training you doing? Most that come for training are AF, Air Guard, Raytheon, or some of the other aviation places we have. Anyways, hope your stay is a good one! Joe
+homesteadonomics yes I'm here at flight safety learning systems for the challenger aircraft. it's really nice here and I kind of want to climb one of these mountains I see all over do you have any tips on a place to go and do that. or do I just drive to the base start walking up?
+twistedup123 Theres tons of hikes... just depends on what you want:) If you want more of a desert type with Saguaros and rock, etc, then Sagauro national monument (NW Tucson) or Tucson Mountain Park(W of Tucson) would be nice. If you want a tougher hike then I'd say Madera Canyon (E. of Green Valley, in my neck of the woods..kinda:) is cool... you'll start at around 3500-4000' and go all the way up to 9900+' in about 5.5 miles. But it'll put you in snow and you might not want that...lol:) Or some other nice hikes that start in desert settings and go up to tree line are Sabino Canyon (NE tucson) or Catalina State Park (NW tucson). anyways, hope that helps:) Joe
+homesteadonomics i want to thank you for your info i am now back home in iowa. we will be expecting snow soon. i loved the desert settings of arizona and the hiking in madera canyon was wonderful we went up to josephine saddle and that was about all we had time for. but it was a wonderful hike. take care and keep up the great content.
+The Little Garden Shed Workshop Thanks Harry... I just love seeing what pallets can become! And I'm not very technical woodworker so pallets fit my skill level well :) Thanks for watching:) Joe
Joe that looks great! Did you have to plane any of the boards or were they all pretty much straight? I like the back boards to break up the white paint!
+The College Woodworker Believe it or not…. no… this was probably the nicest/newest pallet I've seen in a while. Straight and smooth (except for the parts where I cut with the sawzaw). The boards almost looked like store bought lumber. But on that note, I need to keep an eye out for a planer as I don't have one and could really use one at times. Thanks for watching:) Joe
Real nice bubba! I got a new bro!mance going on. have you ever thought of doing a aquaponic, using a cistern collection system for dry season. ( I Don't know if I said that exactly) but, harvesting fish would be awesome in the desert. anyways love your videos.
+Steven Grissom hahaha... thanks Steven! I work in a firehouse and we often joke about having a bromance if a guy gets a new haircut, loses weight, etc,....lol! and to your question.. yes, I have thought about trying out aquaponics at some point. Or at least trying to raise tilapia or something in an IBC tote or something like that. Maybe I will incorporate that with the new sunken greenhouse project...of course I need to finish it though;) ... and yes, having some fresh fish in the desert would be freaking awesome! "honey, just gonna go catch some dinner!" Thanks for watching and making me laugh buddy! Joe
You're welcome. I'm pretty sure that he will not be to bummed because it is a large recall. I see at least three to five a week sitting out there. I hope all goes well and cannot wait to see what you come up with next. Mike p.s. I this you might have to worry more about people seeing these posts and jumping on it themselves. LOL, have a great one
hahaha... then I'm gonna have to start deleting these...lol...jk I'm just waiting for them to call me when some are ready. He said they had to destroy the old ones to be able to give the boxes away... in case they had to ship the new ones back.
Hey, just to let you know that I have had some issues with this particular wood when I stain them little white dots show up after. I would recommended putting some kind of sealer or something on it before staining it. Other than that it has been great. Mike
Very nice looking cabinet. Not knowing anything about essential oils, did you choose the wire mesh instead of glass to for aesthetics or something to do with the oils?
+Make Crazydays hahaha no special reason… mostly because I had it on hand in my scrap pile and my wife liked the look of it too:) But glass would look great as well… just preference:) Thanks for watching! Joe
Your videos are really inspiring to me. I actually need to make some extra money and ordered some shot glasses and got some old leather belts from the thrift store to make that pallet shelf. What do u think would be fair to sell one for?
gargar209 Thanks Gargar! For the price to sell a pallet shelf like that… it's really hard to say. It will depend on your location a great deal. For example, people in trendy areas of some cities are willing to pay top dollar for something they feel is unique and interesting. But in other areas, not so much.. just depends. It's cheap for the materials but it's the 'uniqueness' that will do the selling. Maybe offer it for a super high price and see if somebody counters you. Say you offer $150 and someone says they'd be willing to do $75 then maybe $85-$100 is a good price? But if I were selling it here in Tucson… I'd price it at least $100, if not $150 or more. Anyways, hope that helps! Joe
Hey Joe, must say i liked the little 'travel' part of the video, a bit different! I was wondering though what sort of paint did you use? I hate painting too, i think i'm too impatient to wait for it to dry! Haha P.S. Good luck with the competition, its a cool piece! 👍
+gavin murray thanks Gavin! I thought the travel would kinda add a little interest to the 'norm'… haha… feeds the creative spirit. BTW… maybe you ought to do a pallet project for your first build video? I'm working on another one…. but it may not turn out well…think diresta axe handle… but with pallets;)
Very nice video, great work. I subscribed to your channel after i saw the shipping container shop videos. How do you get all the machines out every time? They look heavy. :)))
haha... yes, that's one of the reasons I am building the shop... to have them in areas that are okay to get all dusty and be able to just blow the dust out. In the garage it gets all over my wifes car and eventually into the house...which is why I move them out into the open. so hopefully many of this things like the band saw and air nailer, etc, can stay in one place:)
+allan Salamanes Thanks Allan! free? yep… just the fuel to go pick it up:) However, not all places let pallets go for free, but if you ask around you'll find more free ones than you can use! Thanks for watching:)
Alex Johnson in the video it shows him going to get the wood in the car and then he takes his reciprocating saw and he cuts the pallets down so they will fit in the back of his car here in my state Florida you have pallets Galore all throughout the whole state you could probably fill a stadium with pallets just in one day
Kenneth Fjelde Hey Kenneth... the nice pallet boards that I used for the main body were .75" and the ones on the back were about .5 to .6" in thickness. Hope that helps:)
I think if you would have used stain instead of white paint (which is easier to use and you hate painting, and gives that nice natural look) it would looked even better. But nice job none the less.
+Marius Siauciunas Thanks Marius! I agree.. but the wife wanted paint on this one... and as the saying goes... happy wife, happy life;) Thanks for watching! Joe
Love it. Your wife is very lucky to have a craftsman type of man that can do just about anything and make anything. 👍👍👍👍👍💯💯💯💯💯🐞🌹🦂🌵
Joe
You make it look so simple! I need to find me a homestead man like you!!! Your family is so inspiring!

Fantastic work! I just moved to Tucson myself and love making these sort of things. I just made a farm table for my family this past weekend. Looking forward to more of your videos.
Good work! I like the definition between the white and the natural wood in the back. Good call!
+Scott Hillier Thanks Scott! I liked it too... kinda brought it back to that rustic pallet feel:)
Lovely little cabinet, just what I want for my tiny cabin! Great cause too.
+Anne Anderson (Foxiepaws) Thanks Anne!
Awesome idea for storing essential oils. I need to have hubby make one of these. Great video!!!
+Julie Harrison thanks Julie! We use it literally every day! And yes... get hubby cracking on this... he'll be glad he did:)
I really like how the raw pallet wood looks on the back. The contrast is nice. We've discussed Tucson before. We used to live on 39th street.
Bruce A. Ulrich Thanks Bruce! I like the contrast too.... really brought the rustic character back in since the main wood was so new looking:) Hope you recognized some stuff in the super fast drive through portion:)
Joe
Look so good Joe! the mesh and the strips of wood for the back are great design elements
+HerringBone Thanks HB! I agree, I was a little uninspired with the plain white until the wood strips were added:)
Love your energy. At 67, I wish I had mine back.
I love the sketchup/design process!
Scott Haun Thanks Scott! Much appreciated sir:)
Love the music / motorcycle sound effects?? Awesome video and great use of a pallet. Thinking outside the box!
+Nic Ames Thanks Nic! I know.. random motorcycle…lol…it was for my distaste of painting and sanding… and I thought it'd be funny;) Thanks for watching!

I love it. Very inspiring.
Great videography as well.

Fantastic use of pallet wood, what a great video!
Petals on the Paving Slabs Thanks PPS!
This is really cool! I'd love to make a dumbed down, low eqipment required version for nail polish and essential oils.
+Olifactory Thanks OF! It could definitely be made with less tools... a hand saw and a drill could do most of the work. Thanks for watching:)
Joe
very nice.. your simple design looks great

Very good indeed another of his projects I'm going to try congratulations

Some reuse their pallets and want to keep them and others keep certain ones and allow you to take the 'older' ones... and then others (my favorites!), are happy that you are taking the pallets off their hands. I also check craigslist too... but for the most part I go back to the places that I've collected from before.
And the final part of the etiquette piece is that I try not to make a mess and leave the remaining pallets in a neat and orderly fashion. Maybe this will be a video idea...hmmm;)
Joe
nice color scheme, really like the raw back wood accent.
Rob Shamel Thanks Rob! My wife and I really like the contrast..... of course I kinda had to since the first pallet was made with such nice looking wood... had to get the rustic in there somehow:)
Joe
Cool you must live near tucson. Im in tucson right now for training for work. It sure is a beautiful town. Completely different than my hometown in iowa
+twistedup123 Yep, I'm south of Tucson by about 30 minutes or so. My dad actually used to live in Osceola IA for a while too:)
What kind of training you doing?
But it'll put you in snow and you might not want that...lol:) Or some other nice hikes that start in desert settings and go up to tree line are Sabino Canyon (NE tucson) or Catalina State Park (NW tucson).
anyways, hope that helps:)
Joe
+homesteadonomics great thanks. bravo to you and your channel. I'm a big fan keep up the good work.
Great job, Good luck and Best wishes. Harry
+The Little Garden Shed Workshop Thanks Harry... I just love seeing what pallets can become! And I'm not very technical woodworker so pallets fit my skill level well :)
Thanks for watching:)
Joe
I used to work in a warehouse yard. I could have made these by the dozens and been profitable every week
Nice project joe
+The Hoosier Homesteader Thanks HH!
Thanks for watching:)
Joe
"honey, just gonna go catch some dinner!"
Thanks for watching and making me laugh buddy!
Joe
kindly provide details of the project in description or any other relevant material...... Great work....:)
You're welcome. I'm pretty sure that he will not be to bummed because it is a large recall. I see at least three to five a week sitting out there. I hope all goes well and cannot wait to see what you come up with next.
Mike
p.s. I this you might have to worry more about people seeing these posts and jumping on it themselves. LOL, have a great one
hahaha... then I'm gonna have to start deleting these...lol...jk
I'm just waiting for them to call me when some are ready.
Joe
Man, is that ceiling solid enough to hold weight? Isnt that ceiling sheet rock? 2:37
Haha
Very cool man i like it sweet :)
+TJ'S WOODWORKING SHOP Thanks TJ!
Joe
Very nice video, great work. I subscribed to your channel after i saw the shipping container shop videos. How do you get all the machines out every time? They look heavy. :)))
haha... yes, that's one of the reasons I am building the shop... to have them in areas that are okay to get all dusty and be able to just blow the dust out. In the garage it gets all over my wifes car and eventually into the house...which is why I move them out into the open. so hopefully many of this things like the band saw and air nailer, etc, can stay in one place:)
Thank you!
glad you liked it Christina!
Nice work, cheers
Paul Dove thanks Paul!
Awesome!!!!!!
weetreebonsai Thanks WTB!
ótimo projeto...parabéns
Well done.
+deounb Thanks Deounb!
How do you get it hang on the wall ?
Diresta would be proud
+helidodge hahaha… thanks HD!
like your cabinet.. the pallet wood is free?
+allan Salamanes Thanks Allan! free? yep… just the fuel to go pick it up:) However, not all places let pallets go for free, but if you ask around you'll find more free ones than you can use! Thanks for watching:)
How can i get in contact with you? I live in Tucson and I wanna know if I could have some help making a few things... please and thank you.
you can send a youtube message or an email (found in the 'about' tab). I'd be happy to answer some questions for you:)
It you don't have a truck, how do you get building materials home?
Alex Johnson in the video it shows him going to get the wood in the car and then he takes his reciprocating saw and he cuts the pallets down so they will fit in the back of his car here in my state Florida you have pallets Galore all throughout the whole state you could probably fill a stadium with pallets just in one day
Nicholas Napier that's why I asked about building materials not pallets. For example, the steel he uses on projects or sheet goods or lumber
Borrowed pick-up truck , probably. :)
How thick is the pallet boards ?
Kenneth Fjelde Hey Kenneth... the nice pallet boards that I used for the main body were .75" and the ones on the back were about .5 to .6" in thickness. Hope that helps:)
Nice project, just subbed ya.
Cool! thanks for watching Ace!
Joe
you like work the sun!
This is very nice! However measurements of the wood and detailed instructions would be very much appreciated!
You should get a roof rack so you don't have to cut the pallets down on site.
+Christopher Keene yep, that would be a great addition to the car… I'm just to cheap right now:) Thanks for watching Chris!
superb
fast and furious ,,
I think if you would have used stain instead of white paint (which is easier to use and you hate painting, and gives that nice natural look) it would looked even better. But nice job none the less.
+Marius Siauciunas Thanks Marius! I agree.. but the wife wanted paint on this one... and as the saying goes... happy wife, happy life;) Thanks for watching!
Joe
Man, how do you live in that area and not own a truck?? Come on!
+Josef Roesler haha... I would like one but I can't afford to fill the tank with my work commute:) Perhaps in the future though! thanks for watching:)
