    Shenmue III in a nutshell:
    1. Run around talking to people who will stonewall you at every opportunity.
    2. Grind money and catch chickens over and over to learn martial arts
    3. Finally confront your father's killer and fail to land a single hit before he gets away.
    4. Swear vengeance as the credits roll and be told to buy Shenmue 4 in 50 years.

Shenmue was groundbreaking at the time for doing something no one else had done at the time: giving you a town that you interacted with as a normal person. You could talk and interact with anyone and everything, and you realistically had to wait for time to pass and work a day job to get cash. It was an interactive slice-of-life simulator.
Only problem now is, between games like Yakuza, Animal Crossing, and to a lesser extent Skyrim, we have games that do that better, and without all the shit that sucks.

    • @cameronb851
      @cameronb851 4 года назад +24

I never understood the appeal of 'slice of life' simulators. Why would I care about a game that just shows the tedium of most people's average lives? Like I need another job, or lawn to mow. If someone wants to make a day in the life of an astronaut, or James Bond, then hell yeah, but for some batshit reason people just make slice of life simulations for pastry chefs or insurance salesmen ... or in this case, witless gomers.

      @cameronb851 4 года назад +8

@@Ray-tf5wu - Fair call, though I would think that they at least would contain a moderately interesting premise and/or game-play, which this game does not. It doesn't have to be shootouts and ultra violence. Interestingly, I have noticed a few more visceral games sometimes include elements that I think are of this nature.
I've been playing through Far Cry 5 a bit, and while the core game play loop is of course running and gunning, there's a whole separate mini game where you can just fish. Given the often stunning natural environment that the game has, I imagine you could sit down for hours at a nice in game fishing spot and just relax. And to me, this would be far more enjoyable as a meditative soothing experience than a tedious dull routine.
There's even a few in game pets, such as a dog, that you could take with you and between the roaming activity of the dog, the weather /night and day system in the game and the visual of fish jumping on the surface, it could be quite relaxing for someone who doesn't have access to this kind of environment in real life, or even if they do, being able to jump on the game for an hour before going to bed and get a bit of soothing time just relaxing.
But, I see your point, even if for me, I think there are far better games to get this relaxation in.

I was like "wait, hold on, is this an anime TV show? Because an anime that takes 12 chapters to reveal a mystery and avenge a family member is pretty seasonal. Taking 12 games to avenge a family member is surreal."
Seriously, even Assassins Creed 2 was about under covering a conspiracy involving bankers, politician, nobles and the church, spanning multiple cities of Renaissance Italy, involving magical artefacts, taking time to train the protagonist AND having him assassin dozens of people and learning to better empathise with his victims *IN ONE SINGLE GAME* .
But if you are telling me the author doesn't play videogames it all makes sense. This was done by a person who keeps everything. EVERYTHING. all the filler training and tests are not only there, but they are slow.

It moves like molasses so you can follow it even if you're only lucid for part of it, its moral worldview is that of an 80-year-old grandma, and Ryo's personality, to the extent that he has one, conforms to the standards of what some fans call "mommy porn," i.e. upright and hygenic young men fulfilling their obligations.

Here's the thing - If the game's director had any game directing talent, he could have his cake and eat it too.
You CAN create a game with a lengthy story detailing a slow life while uncovering a murder's secrets and also at the same time keep it to one game.
You'd need centralized mechanics and the writers willing to do more work through a three year development cycle than your average fanfic writer on a cold sunday morning. Mesh the two together, and you have a well flashed out set of mechanics along with a story that can go on for months.

Especially when you realize you never really knew your dad or what he did to deserve it. Following his path in life and learning of the wild ties that now begin to tether to your own life in pursuit of vengeance, remembrance, and kinship through the art of perseverance, combat and compassion.
That in this quest you know the kid being bullied in the park doesn't deserve it. That the stray by your house deserves a saucer of milk on your way home. From a job you took at the docks just to be closer to the mob, and learn their secrets during your breaks and off time.
This stuff is intriguing to me. You only had so many hours in the day, and if you wanted to fuck around and hit the games, the visceral feeling of choosing to break from a clearly driven main quest to fit 'life' in for my health and welfare as a person was tied to Ryos experience as well. At no point did it feel like Skyrim and doing a hunch of side activities in a game. I was just enjoying Ryo's time off from his quest. Tomorrow would be another day, and perhaps that day, will be *the* day.
Maybe not. In that routine, getting a call that your girlfriend has been kidnapped at the docks, because they knew you've been spying and having to go there in the middle of the night to fight them by the dozen. Retainer of a family friend at your side, begrudgingly arriving 'to help you just this once' as 100 men surround you, back to back. A real Double Dragon moment.
All just to bring her back on your motorcycle, bruised up and cuts all over you. Your job at the docks was no more. That chapter is done. The sun coming up in the horizon on the way home as she squeezes closer. Turning the page. Yeah, I dunno. It was magical to me.

Me and my brother actually had a discussion about Shenmue I and II a few days ago. We may have nostalgia glasses firmly embedded on our faces when it comes to this franchise, but we remember it being mainly story-driven. You got to learn lots about various side characters, play out a love scenario, play a few old arcade games, quick time events (the first to innovate them - they were new back then) and just exploring the city of Yokosuka (which I visited and yes, it was taken from that exact city, I lived there and when I first walked around it felt like deja vu until my sister said she also felt like she remembered this place) so you essentially got to see out a real life city, or at least a section of it.
It was the first game that blew my mind with the side characters because during the day and during the night, some people were around and some weren't, just depending on the hours. But that also included various days. The side characters you got to talk to as if they were real people, had schedules outside of Ryo's realm - you couldn't find them on some days, because of weather or just because they were elsewhere running errands in town. The game made you feel like they were more than just stationary AI with new information every other day to progress the story.
The combat system was fun for what it was. Learning new moves by practicing in the park was just fun for me - but that would be a biased statement because I also took various martial arts before and since. Practicing was just a diligent things and your moves evolved after you got to a certain proficiency and then again after you mastered it. It showed his fighting progress, and those bouts were far from a button mashing fist-fight in that nature. The 70 man fight with Gui Zhang at your side was fun and the music for it was epic, and got your blood pumping. The fighting itself wasn't perfect, but wasn't overly clunky and was JUST fun enough to enjoy.
You could work some odd jobs, the harbor was the one I remember being the most beneficial. The job was tedious but could be fun if you made it as such, which is why I kept going back. With the money you earned from your little job you could buy food, gifts and little easter eggs out of the toy capsules, or play video games in the arcade like Space Harrier and Hang On, or shoot some dice. The weather changed with the year's passing and if you procrastinated to a certain date, you got a bad ending.
The graphics (for it's time) were admittedly high end. Though it looks like there wasn't much innovation in terms of graphics since then, looking at Shenmue III, which I'll agree with people on that, but back then it was amazing. The Nozomi side character is a childhood friend which you can develop a romantic feel for her or not - but inevitably, Ryo leaves at the end of the game so nothing happens of it (spoilers for those who didn't play the first game). But you have to realize that the game itself was basically an interactive detective movie, first... You needed to solve puzzles later on in the game, but clue-gathering was the priority at first. It had enough other elements thrown into the mix to be considered an actual game - and that's why it has a large following.
It had a lot going for it - and hot damn, was most of the music catchy. The Dreamcast version had a 4th CD with all sorts of unlockables like galleries and art concepts, all the music (even those cut from the game), interviews and development... It was a nice gesture to include because all the music was fitting and was nice. I can say I thoroughly enjoyed the game through it's flaw of not holding up today because of how innovative it was and how much time it kept me busy. If the controls were fixed up a bit for fighting (Yahtzee never said they were clunky or anything of the sort) and glitches were as hard to find in this game as the previous ones, then I'd say it's worth a buy at least at $40 - but that's if you know what you're getting into... Also, this is from me who is just a guy who never buys a game at full price anymore.

@@JeiJohnson The day/night cycle and NPC schedule mechanic completely break the pacing and sense of urgency in the story. Other games with said mechanics are usually open-ended ones like Animal Crossing or The Sims. It doesn't fit a game that boasted to be "Cinematic RPG", Yu Suzuki should have decided to create either life simulator or story-driven game not both. Because the mechanics ruin each other. And the whole NPC schedule thing was only impressive for a short while before becoming an annoyance (and realizing it's only strict programming not something alive). And about that bad ending you mentioned if you procrastinate too much, the game encourage you to enjoy the life simulator aspect but also discourage and punish you at the same time if you enjoy it too much. That's stupid.
The detective part in Shenmue 1 is nothing clever and often pointless, it baffles me why Ryo need to confirm that the bad guys who ransacked his home are Chinese. Lan Di put on full kung fu warrior getup and I assume he speaks Chinese to his underlings when he was at the dojo. Is our brave protagonist too stupid to put these clues together? And correct me if I misremember this, but after doing his "detective" work around town in early chapters, a mail came that explains everything and rendering Ryo's previous investigation pointless. I don't know why you're impressed with Nozomi's characterization there. The whole "childhood friend with unrequited love" trope is overused in anime and JRPG even back in late 90s. Ryo himself is walking shounen protagonist complete with spiky hair and all the mannerism. Shenmue is revolutionary in some aspects, but definitely not in character and story.
In the end while I don't know behind the production story, but I think Shenmue would turn up much better overall if Yu Suzuki had co-writer(s) and his team willing to disagree and give their own input.

I played the first two Shenmue games 20 years ago and they were good at the time. However, some games age better than others and Shenmue has aged very poorly. The fundamental problem with Shenmue 3 is that Yu Suzuki appears to have learned nothing from any game that has been made in the intervening 20 years, which actually may not be that surprising given that he apparently doesn't play games.

No, they sound horrible on paper. I mean, what is on that paper? "Let's make a fighting game where the core gameplay loop is asking people questions they can't answer and grinding boring minigames, until you end the game without progressing the actual story"?
The game is designed to waste time, not to be enjoyable. Shenmue1 had sections where standing in a corner for several ingame-hours was a valid strategy to progress the story.

The first game especially is basically a waiting simulator if you try and beat it as fast as possible.

This might have been acceptable if i didn't know ahead of time (based on the predicted 12 or so games in the series) that there was going to be no satisfying resolution to the main plot. Had the series only promised 3 games, i might have been willing to put up with the flaws just to see how it ended.
