The only award the Color Purple won that year from 11 nominations... it was nearly shut out like the film was when it lost every Oscar it was nominated for. White audiences had a hard time with a big budget musical centered completely on blackness. Things are changing but we owe it to shows like The Color Purple for paving the way....
