I grew up with the MD/GEN loved the consoled everytime I see any video about it I got to checked it out all the time so much nostalgia and yeah I grabbed the Mini MD/GEN console I was happy with it and agree with everyone it’s a-shame we missed out on some great Mega/Sega Cd games Popful Mail , Snatcher , and others thanks for the video enjoyed it 👍🏻
I feel like Clayfighter is a game that KnightAttack would have wanted on the Mini 2. It's a shame that we didn't get Snatcher, Konami dropped the ball on that one. Good mix of games and Sewer Shark and Crusader of Centy both give a lot of reason to get this.
🙂 I don't think I knew anyone that liked Sewer Shark but now watching Greg's video and reading your comment and now I know at least two people that enjoyed the game.
Nice video! I'm happy to see the Shining Force games so high in your rankings. Also, if/when Victor Ireland contacts you to complain, give him an earful from me. Depriving us from Lunar is almost criminal! 😜
Nobody had a Sega CD here in Sweden when I was growing up. Still to this day I have never even seen one. I've been curious about the TerraOnion MegaSD, but it's a lot of money to put out for a piece of hardware without that special ingredient; nostalgia. Good episode though. And, yes: Phantasy Star II is a kicker of a game. I played it for the first time a few months ago (switch version with 2xspeed option for fast grinding) I absolutely loved it, without any nostalgia attached to it at all.
Yeah a MegaSD would be a lot to risk on something you've never tried before. I'm glad that you've had an opportunity to experience these games, though :)
21:10 Yes, you can. The CyberStick was released at the same time and is selling for totally reasonable sums now..... 😱. Your list, your opinions, but Desert Strike that low? Really?
The one game I would have loved on the Genesis Mini would have been Road Avenger/Blaster. Both because it represents the quick time event FMV games of which we had loads on the Sega/Mega CD but also because it is in itself an iconic game to me. That intro cut scene and of course the title track are stuck in my mind forever.
Alien Soldier isn't that hard on easy, considering I was able to beat it. I'd say give it another chance, learn the moves and when to use each weapon. If you have the patience for HZ there's no excuse! T&E2 is pretty fun for what it is, taken as a 2d collectathon platformer with a lot of personality and some of the first rhythm gameplay in games. But they should've kept more aspects of the original at least as an optional mode. Some pretty harsh takes here. EWJ2 is one of the better ones to me and better than MR for example, only things I'd change would be to make the bonus levels optional and add the weapon switching from the SNES version (which there is a hack for since years back). Overall some picks could've been better for this one or at least touched up like M2 is doing on the Switch since they already did it for Space Harrier 2 here. AB is smoother than on SMS but what happened to the boss fights? Why not improve the scaling in it and the other scaler games? Why not a CD OST option for the poor sounding SSF2? etc.
Good video. I'm a bit bummed they included Sega CD with so few titles and such a limited selection. I believe Joe from Game Sack confirmed pretty much everything you said about Victor Ireland and the Lunar fiasco. Victor did say he only owns the rights to the audio and Sega could have easily just done subtitles to include the games so I think this is a good point to show Sega doesn't love us :( I also enjoyed the rankings. We are on the same page with a lot of this game list though for me Night Trap and Sewer Shark are at the absolute bottom of my list. I couldn't wait to play Alien Soldier and I haven't given up on it but yeah, those controls and the overall difficulty take some getting used to (I'm also having a similar issue with Ranger X). I also really enjoyed the first Earthworm Jim but have a hard time getting into the second.
Thanks for the comment. I totally get Sewer Shark and Night Trap being at the bottom. They're objectively bad games. But I have a real soft spot for early multimedia stuff from the 90s so I love them :)
I was impressed with what we got. A lot of these rarer titles were a pleasant sight to see. Like many others, I would have liked to see the Working Designs titles, but I know a thing or two about Victor Ireland's stubborn attitude, and the limited production run would have just lost SEGA a lot of money to cowtow to whatever his demands would be. Same for Snatcher, given Konami's relation with Kojima these days. I was happy to see the console included a tribute to Rieko Kodama. She was one of my favorite creators, and it was a very sad day for me to hear of her passing.
Still holding out hope that Vic refused because someone else has already purchased the rights to release a standalone collection...Digital Eclipse? You listening?
Great video! Thanks for all the hard work this must have taken. I've finally made a purchase and can't wait to play Final Fight CD on my big TV (disclaimer: I'm normally a CRT guy but i can't resist the Mini 2). I'm pretty obsessed with Final Fight and i love the CD quality audio soundtrack that came with this version. It's almost the entire reason i bought this unit, as i just can't face getting into Sega CD original hardware collecting. Anything else on the Mini 2 I'm seeing as a bonus... But things like Ecco (again, CD soundtrack ftw), Splatterhouse 2, Fantasy Zone and Night Trap will be fun to sink some hours into. Ngl although I hate the LOOK of Streets of Rage 3, I'll be interested to see how that wild experimental music feels in-game! Although I've ordered the Japanese unit.... Is S.O.R.3 even on that one? 🤔 I'll find out soon enough I guess! 🤓
Very cool mini console in terms of history. I just wish that it wasn't so rushed and it's so sad that some of the most coveted Sega CD titles are not here. Great list, too! Your tops always have Yuzo Koshiro involved and I love it :)
I desperately wish Sega would rerelease actual arcade OutRunners so it's kind of depressing to see the Genesis port that really doesn't even meaningfully qualify as a conversion.
Yeah, fed up of all that history nonsense. There's only so much anyone can listen to all that recycled blah blah. Same goes for Hollywood movies as after a 50/50 opening scene, most movies spend the first half hour introducing the audience to the characters, getting up in the morning, what a man, woman and family are, etc. Artistically atrocious.
On this one, Yuzo Koshiro went a bit futuristic and used some kind of random generative music techniques to create some experimental but sometimes quite jarring music. I love it, and I love the fact he used an experimental technique to try to push brave new territory in composition... But it certainly seems to be a love or hate kind of soundtrack! I've just bought a Megadrive 2 Mini and I'm really looking forward to hearing the soundtrack in-game, as until now I've only listened to it as a standalone album. It has to be said though, my favourite SoR OSTs are still those from the first two games. Absolute beautiful classics! ❤
Can't really disagree with much on that list. Revenge has always been the best (Shinobi 3 is flashy but sort of meh) thing on there I finished it every time I sat down to play it for years. I also prefer Shining Force 1 to 2 for the characters even if the gameplay systems aren't quite as polished. I've never played Shining in the Darkness that's something I might try some day because those enemy designs and menus are still endlessly charming looking.
Thanks for watching! I'm currently playing through Shining in the Darkness on twitch (and uploading VODs to this channel). I'm not a dungeon crawler fan, but I love me some Shining in the Darkness :)
@@worsethanhitlerpt.2539 Really? I never had a genesis. But my cousins and friends did so I just presumed Sonic was the default pack in because that's what they all had. None of them had Altered Beast. Interesting.

Bonanza Bros over Rolling Thunder 2 ? That's puzzling 🤔.

I've been yelled at by Victor before.
Super Locomotive looks bonkers. I got into Train Sims last year and this will be the first game I take for a spin when I get time to hook mine up.
Nice! I tried to get into one of the train sims last year. All I really learned is I should never be in charge of a train.

I feel like Koshiro is one of those rare composers who manages to elevate the games he's part of to a new level almost every time.

I actually have OutRunners on an Arcade1up machine down in my game room. I should probably give it an honest try sometime.
Was Desert strike 2 at the arcade? Looks vaguely familiar.

Popful Mail sort of looks like a cross between Athena and Monster World 4
There's such a thing as a bad ost in a SoR game? Never played 3 so i don't really know.

Alien Soldier is kind of a milestone in game development it should be high even if it played bad which it doesnt
Ohh the Genesis mini 2 got a Splatterhouse game, while the first mini got stuck with Altered Beast?Uncool Sega! 😾
Altered Beast was the pack-in game for Genesis so it would obviously be on the MINI 1

Clay Fighter looks weird
EWJ2 is awfully low. :/
