  • I was definitely a Genesis kid, but thanks to my best friend I was able to experience the SNES as well, and obviously it was awesome!
Join me as I reminisce about the SNES games and moments that have stuck with me, how they impacted me as a gamer, and what effect they had on my career.
    Thanks for watching!

I went from Atari 2600 to NES, then Mega Drive (as it was called here) and then Neo Geo CD in 1995, before going all PC for a long time. More than a decade later i started collecting older hardware and games again, starting with a Neo Geo MVS cabinet (4-slot) and a Mega Drive (again). Towards the end ot the 2000's i also got back to buying new consoles, a PS3 and later a PS4. I did play SNES games in the early 1990's at friends and have access to multiple games today. Super Castlevania IV is the one i've played the most so far, more than Super Metroid even. It has a good library of games.

My first SNES memory was actually related to the Super Famicom. I mentioned in the NES video that the owner of the local game rental shop was a gamer themselves. When the Super Famicom came out, she couldn't wait till the North American release, so they imported it along with Super Mario World and Gradius 3 (and maybe Pilot Wings). Once they were done with it, they put it up for rent in the shop. I was able to reserve it during the week after I started Grade 7 at my local high school. The funny thing was, the high school burnt down that weekend and classes were cancelled for a number of days as they sorted it out. So I got to spend even more time playing with the SFC haha.
Later when the SNES did come out, the owner was able to still rent out Super Mario World and Gradius 3 by melting the plastic on the carts so that they would fit into the SNES past those posts they added to prevent that.
And as always, thank you for making these videos!

Great into. I really enjoy your videos and the ones from that other hot new internet show LOL. I had a SNES at launch and Super Mario World blew me away! I remember renting Actraiser and falling in love with it. Final Fantasy II and III were huge titles for me as well. I was never really a fighting game guy until Street Fighter II came out. I vividly remember picking up my pre-order at the mall from Babbage's, opening it in the car, and thumbing through the manual so excited to get home and play it! One of the biggest things I remember about the SNES is how just about EVERY game rammed Mod 7 down your throat just to have it in there. Some made great use of it and other games it was just like a throw-in. Zelda was another huge release for me back in the day.
I'm with you on the SNES design as well. After reading EGM for years leading up to the SNES I remember thinking we got hosed with the design of the console in the US and I was another one of those that wanted the more colorful controller other regions got. I was pretty much a multi-console gamer from that point on as well. Then at one point I kinda got out of gaming for a few years but they hooked me again after a trip to Funcoland where a friend of mine had me check out Resident Evil on the PS1 and that kinda kicked off my "phase 2".

    • @sewart
      @sewart  9 месяцев назад +1

      Thanks!
I never visited a Funcoland until I moved down to Chicago in 1999. I had one along my daily commute. That was back before the retro gaming market had gone insane, and it was so cool to stop in on a whim and walk out with a bunch of old cartridges for something like $30. A lot of my current collection is thanks to that place!

We got the Super Nintnedo late into it's life cycle, but because of that we had some great games for pretty cheap. FF3, Secret of Mana, Soul Blazer, Conkey Kong Country 3... Many of these games I still have my original copies of. Battletoads on the SNES was a spectacle (if not as difficult as its predecessor) but the size of the sprites really let you take in all the glory of the different finishing attacks.

I was 11 when the SNES came out and was lucky enough to get one that first Christmas, along with Sim City and F-Zero. My fun story is that I found where my mom was hiding it well before Christmas, and became an expert at carefully sneaking it out of its hiding place, carefully opening the box, and carefully slitting (and then super gluing back) the cellophane on the games to sneak in some late night gaming before Christmas. If I recall correctly, I finished Super Mario World (though didn't get all of the stars until later) before I'd officially opened my Christmas present.
While subsequent systems had better, more well-rounded libraries, the SNES will always be my favorite system. Life wasn't super easy at the time (I was a child of multiple marriages/divorces, we moved around a lot, and my dad died during this period), but the SNES (and later, I'd finally add the Genesis) was my one constant. Outside of that great wave of initial games, most of which you mentioned, the first time I was truly blown away was by the opening of A Link to the Past. It's a magical game, still my favorite Zelda, and will always be a top 5 of all-time for me.
This isn't a unique list to me by any means, but other formative games on the system for me were Super Mario Kart, Final Fantasy 3, Chrono Trigger, Super Metroid, Star Fox, Pilotwings, Donkey Kong Country, Secret of Mana, Street Fighter 2, and Yoshi's Island, among many others. All of the classics, which I know is boring, but the system was SO deep, that I think my list of underappreciated gems is more interesting. Some of my favorites that don't top all-time lists are Soul Blazer, Rock n' Roll Racing, The Lost Vikings, Shadowrun, Ogre Battle, Illusion of Gaia, Flashback, Super Tennis, and so many more. We were never rich, but I was able to get a few games a year through various holidays/birthday, and I wore out my local Blockbuster, Movie Gallery, and any other shop that would rent games. Towards the end of the cycle, I was finally earning money by cutting grass, which I needed to buy the crazy expensive RPGs that came out in the late years (that $70 Chrono Trigger cartridge would cost $144 today!).
Thanks again for the time you put into your videos and for the trips down memory lane. Love your work!

I only ever played (at the time if relevance) Final Fantasy 2 at a friends house but that overworld theme stuck with me far longer than those few hours. It evokes the openness of the world so well.
You are wrong about Donkey Kong Country and I will fight you. :P
I like the dated 3D look, how starkly lit dark everything is. The jungle feels dense and dark because of it, if not a bit too artificial, and sure, there's no scanlines hiding the jank but I think it holds up better than Super Castlevania.

Snes was my brother's system as a kid and in high school (2001-2005) me and a friend printed out a complete list of snes games and made lists of games we wanted and hunted for them at pawn shops and thrift stores. We both still have them today and I adding to the collection throughout the years. I have 90 now, favorite is super metriod, Final fight 3, The Legend of Zelda, Castlevania 4, Contra 3, King of Dragon's. Hidden gems are wild gun, pirates of dark water, Legend. Great translated import reproduction carts to get Ghost Chaser densei, Magical Pop'N. I also recommend the 8bitdo wireless controllers. I could listen to snes anything every day. Great content Sir ❤
