Eddie Albert had married only once. His wife died after 40 years of marriage and he never remarried. He was a hero in WW2, he rescued 47 Marines who were stranded offshore and was fired upon while doing it. His son Edward Albert had a long career in Hollywood. He also was married once. He stopped his career when his father had Altmeiers and personally cared for his father.
I just read that today, where Eddie Albert rescued 47 marines. That's was very nice of his son, where he can be with his father. It's a huge responsibility when it comes to be the caregiver of your parents .
I think there's a lot of himself in his Jason O'Day character -- who also couldn't move past losing the love of his life, but still had a lot of love for life and those around him.
Eva was without a doubt one the most beautiful, classy elegant women to have ever lived. I'm 69 and grew up watching and laughing my butt off to Green Acres.
Green Acres was absolutely one of the most hilarious shows I ever watched in my whole life. I used to laugh so hard my stomach hurt. Such a absolute timeless classic TV Show
The writing of Green Acres was surreal. It was MUCH more sophisticated than most comedies. They broke the "4th wall" and addressed the viewer directly. It was all tongue in cheek and enjoyable to both urban and rural viewers.
My wife is a big fan of Green Acres and watched the reruns as a kid. We bought the box set of the complete series and I've been pleasantly surprised by it. I never knew that it was connected to Petticoat Junction directly, with Sam Drucker featuring in both shows, among others. The writing and visuals get a bit surreal and even psychedelic in some of the episodes, capturing the changing times of the 1960s in a show set in rural America. I think there was something in the sugarcubes of the writers' coffee.
Same here , I watch Green Acres on ME TV . We even have our own "green acres" on the farm. We have the original home on the land , which is 140 year old home. It's still standing up, in very good condition.
Forever one of my favorite shows of all time. The writing and jokes were hilarious, and Eddie Albert was such a good sport to be the victim of so many pratfalls and other physical humor. A great great cast in this legendary comedy that was far greater than many critics gave it credit for.
No.... they knew... that's why they got rid of it. In fact I believe it was one of the top shows (if not #1) when CBS cancelled it in the "great rural purge" when any show with decency and morals and which showed regular people was wiped from the air. That was when Pat Buttram made his famous quote "They even got rid of Lassie, because it had a tree in it."
Re: "far greater than many critics gave it credit for." In fact, some of the critics trashed the show, as they did of "Gilligan's Island." But both shows thrived because of their audience appeal.
My favorite Monroe Brothers scene is one where they are working in the Douglas' bedroom and Eb comes in and says, "Can I borrow the car, Dad?" And of course, Oliver says, "No, and I'm not your Dad." And they put their tools down, quit working and sat on the floor. Oliver asked them what was going on, and Alf said, "We refuse to work for someone who treats their son like that."
My dad was best friends with Tom Lester, "Eb." Dad had Parkinson's and they went to exercise together. Tom was a part of life my whole life. The day he bought his farm, I was buying my house. We both sat there awaiting our turns to sign the paperwork. Good man. He also played Almonzos father on Little House on the Prairie.
Wouldn't it have been great in the final episode of the series if Oliver woke up in bed next to Lisa in the penthouse and he realized all this time it was all just a dream. Sort of like what happened in the final episode of "Newhart" when he woke up in bed next to Suzanne Pleshette.
I just watched that episode! You had a little foreshadowing when Lisa was making hotcakes at Green Acres. Then she made them at the diner, and you knew for sure that Oliver was going to use that on the truck!
I adore Green Acres. I watched it as a 9 yr old and laughed until I couldn't catch my breath ! 😆😆. It was so silly but hilarious. Everything clicked. Best actors ever. I still watch it on METV every nite. Pure gold 😂💛❤️
I grew up watching Green Acres and loved every episode. I loved Ava Gabor's character (Lisa). There was an episode where she made coffee and it came out like mud. :D Those were the days of good clean humor.
Pat Buttram's Green Acres character originated on a Saturday night radio program called Barn Dance. He was the same shaky voiced guy always trying to sell you something. (I have a few relatives like that)
Beloved, and yet still an underrated TV classic. The actors created incredible characters, and the writers were just off the wall funny. Best of both worlds. Thank God for reruns.

My My Mother was one of Gene Autry's "Melody Ranch Cowgirls" and traveled all over the country with Gene and Pat Buttrum in the mid 50's . To me, it was in many ways the best situation comedy of that decade, a period when most sitcoms were terribly bland and don't hold up today like "Green Acres". A marvelous cast and excellent writing contributed significantly to its success. He was so spry and nimble, it's hard to believe Eddie Albert was turning 60 when the show's first episode was aired! I wish Frank Cady could have appeared and of course, it's sad that Hank Patterson--who was marvelous and Barbara Pepper had left us long before this reunion. Speaking of Patterson, I learned he was practically stone deaf, which interfered with delivering his lines. This was such a problem, the producers were going to replace him after the first season. The cast and crew adored this guy, and it was Eddie Albert (always a decent, stand-up kind of man) told the producers that if Hank was fired, he would leave as well. Eddie and Hank worked out tricks to assist him, such as having a crew member laying on the floor and tapping Hank's foot with a yardstick when it was his cue. You'd never know it when watching the show.
Thanks for posting, I never knew that about Hank Patterson, he also played on Gunsmoke semi-occaisonally; GA was one of the Best sitcoms Ever, & as a child, I always loved watching it every week. Nothing on tv today compares to shows like this.
@@carlinbrumback8931 Eddie Albert in WW2 The battle itself started on November 20 1943 with bombardment from multiple U.S. destroyers and an air attack. After the lagoon was cleared of mines the marines then launched their assault on the beaches surrounding the pier. The marines spent two days without reinforcement pushing across the island. The initial attempts to land tanks on the island failed because but they got hung up on the reef much like the landing craft did. Eventually they successfully landed some Sherman and Stuart tanks on the island but only one was operational by the end of the day. By noon the marines managed to push to the base of the airfield. The Japanese were unable to launch a counter attack because of severed communication lines from naval fire and the loss of admiral Shibazaki. The second day of the battle the marines turned their focus to green beach on the west end of the island in order to land reinforcements there. With heavy naval support there were able to take the beach with minimal losses. Beaches Red 2 and Red 3 took more effort to take because of Japanese machine gun emplacements set up during the night but there were eventually able to punch through and made it to the airfield. The third day started with a reorganization of troops and an offensive. Pushing the Japanese back to a small part of the island. That night a counter offensive was assembled but was largely thwarted with artillery fire. On the third day the Japanese starting to become desperate started banzai charging the American troops. The Americans began to bombard the small area of the island left under Japanese control. Soon after with the help of two Sherman tanks and five light tanks the marines were able to completely take control of the island. After Eddie Albert joined the Navy he sailed to Tarawa not as a marine but as a salvage officer aboard the ship Sheridan. His first mission was to unload a group of marines and supplies on the beach. Unknown to him earlier that day a missed calculation in the tides had left many maries stranded offshore. The miscalculation in tides meant that only the LVT (Landing Vehicle Tracked) where the only landing craft able to make it past the reefs surrounding the island. The LVTs did not have armored hulls and many were taken out of action due to machine gun fire putting holes through their hulls. The Higgins boats that were supposed to be used would have been better suited for the job because they are offer more protection for the soldiers in the boat and can take small arms fire but they could not clear the reef. During his mission he came across about 150 marines, 100 of which were still alive “waist deep in the water, suffering rapidly mounting casualties from strafing by several machine gun nests on the end of the pier, in the sunken ship, and by numerous snipers in abandoned AmpTracs and LCVP’s.” (Edward Heimberger 1943, 1) Albert and Lieutenant Fletcher in a different boat began to rescue the survivors and bring them back to the safety of the ship. They made three or four trips, Eddie’s boat suffered damage to its prop and he was ordered to return the ship. By this time the tide was beginning to rise making it difficult for the marines still trapped offshore. Eddie then decided to return with more small crafts to pick the rest of the stranded marines in one trip. When they got close to the shore it was clear that the enemy had “added to their fire-power.” (Edward Heimberger 1943, 2) Because of the added fire-power the officer decided to rescue the marines one boat at a time under the covering fire of the rest of the boats. In addition to added machine guns, enemy snipers started firing on the ship sent in to rescue the marines. This slowed their progress but they were eventually able to eliminate the sniper with the boats machine guns. After the final wounded men were aboard the boat the few remaining uninjured marines, without rifles, asked Eddie to bring back supplies to fight because they wanted to try again to get ashore. Eddie headed back to the ship to drop off the wounded. On his way back he continued to be under heavy fire. “The men, meanwhile, were stamping out the incendiaries before they could do any damage.” (Edward Heimberger 1943, 2) One of the greatest concerns was incendiary rounds lighting one of the eight fuel barrels on fire and then exploding the entire boat. Eddies boat was so overloaded on the return ship that the deck of the boat was a foot or two below the water line. After doping off the injured marines “He returned later only to discover that they (the soldiers that asked him to get them rifles) had fallen under enemy fire.” (Millitary.com,1) Eddie was awarded the bronze star for his actions on November 29 1943. There is much more to this story in the battle for Tarawa.
Always loved this show! Watched the first runs in the 60's with my kooky mom (she could have been part of the cast) and still love it today. The 1947 Allis Chalmers tractor I had reminded me of Eddie's Hoyt-Clagwell, it had a mind of its own..."You stupid tractor!"
God bless all of them. As kids we would sing along as the show started. And enjoy the silly antics. Now I watch them again on reruns, and enjoy them more. Just saw one where Oliver bought lots of chicks and Lisa was going to give them a bath. Oliver said you can't give them a bath! And Lisa said, are we going to raise a bunch of hippies 😂😂😂 it was appropriate for that time.
Oh yes. This was my show! I am a 55-year Green Acres fan. Since this was from 1989, Eddie Albert was a widower. And of course, Eva Gabor was going out with Merv Griffin. But when they did the show, they were married to other people in real life. Eddie Albert was married to his only wife Margo. And Eva Gabor was married to her fourth husband, Filmways Vice President Richard Brown.
Albert and Gabor loved each other so much, that Albert arranged to be buried near Ava when he died. Eva was so much nicer than her famous sister and much more talented as well.
@@juliaflo3172 Eddie died before Edward - Edward was diagnosed with lung cancer during the last year or so of Eddie's life, but spent his remaining time taking care of Eddie, who'd been diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease.
I was just 11 when this was taped, but I have such fond memories of watching all these greatest generation performers. It's what I miss most of that era, this generation that's all gone now. Next to Ed Asner, I think Eddie Albert is my all time favorite. rip
I loved Green Acres while growing up, figuring it for a hilarious but unrealistic look at rural living. Then, at age 24 I moved to a rural county and learned that the show was quite _realistic._

He seemed like he was their real son. He had such a sweet personality. The entire cast was superb and made me laugh all the time. I stl watch the reruns every night. Never .miss them if a I can help it.
John, thanks you for rescuing this reunion special. I recall it being so great that Green Acres was getting the "so old its new" treatment in the nostalgia wave Nick at Night rode in the cable revolution. And then to start losing so many of them, so soon after this - it was a great moment of lucky timing to capture this when Nick did (even with the googie Nickelodean/Mark Summers moments). And Green Acres was so far ahead of the other "rural comedies," even Paul Henning's other ones.
Those of us lucky enough to grow up watching 1960's, 1970's and 1980's TV got the benefit of writers that had previous stage and movie writing credentials as they then migrated from those venues to the media call TV. The same can be said of TV actors brought up in stage and movie productions.
Thousand oaks California was the perfect filming locations for Hooterville and the Douglas farm, it was so beautiful back in the 60s, it's all gone now and just another sprawling neighborhood
Still to this day this show was the best.Out of the three.....Beverly Hillbillies....Pettycoat Junction and Green Acres. It is still on in reruns and never gets old.Compair to the crap on tv these days.My favorite episode was whenLisa tried to go back to school.I have two 8x10's of Eddie and Tom Lester milking Elinore......and one pic signed to a private fan.Frank Cady lived the longest of them all. This show was always such a hoot.
Great show. It was so nice to see these actors again I really miss the show and hope I can see it on television when I can or you tube if it's on here. I used to laugh so hard and would imitate Mr Kimble sometimes. All the actors were hilarious as their characters, I love them all including the animals.
One of the funniest shows ever. Paul Henning, the writer and creator of the show, should be commended for the hysterical and frankly, outlandishly ridiculous plots that were so funny you laughed during the entire show.
I'm 68 and it's July 1, 2023. I remember this show in primetime on CBS way back in the 60s and into the early 70s. The show would have continued on past 6 seasons if the knucklehead in charge of CBS television programming hadn't cancelled every rural show in 1971. It was called the rural purge. This purge made room for violent crap tv. If shows like, "Green Acres", were on tv now we'd return to commercial tv. My wife and I left commercial tv 12 years ago and haven't regretted a moment of it. We watch shows like, "Green Acres", on DVD borrowed from the library. We watch all the old favorites. It's really nice. And best of all it's FREE!!
I started watching this show recently, and was FLOORED Ava Gabor's character was named 'Lisa' in the program, I would've never guessed. I wonder if this is when that name took off. Growing up, there were tons of girls named 'Lisa' most born after 1967. In fact I don't know a Lisa who is older than that.
One of the best all time TV shows, I loved this and the other Paul Henning shows as a kid. Eva amazingly gorgeous here at 70 yo...Too bad this was so rushed....

I saw Eva on Match Game, absolutely beautiful! She was really smart and a great sense of humor too! She didn't need writers to be funny!
Yea, I couldn't BELIEVE how smart she was on Match Game considering how HORRIBLE she was on Password
One of the best shows. A simpler time. Sister shows Petticoat Junction and Beverly Hillbillies. No politics comedy from situation and characters 🤣
Hello Brian how are you doing.
Good grief.
It’s so sad that all the actors have all passed! Eb Dawson was the last to go! God bless everyone who made GREEN ACRES happen!
God bless all of them. As kids we would sing along as the show started. And enjoy the silly antics. Now I watch them again on reruns, and enjoy them more. Just saw one where Oliver bought lots of chicks and Lisa was going to give them a bath. Oliver said you can't give them a bath! And Lisa said, are we going to raise a bunch of hippies 😂😂😂 it was appropriate for that time.
fred Ziffel used her hotscakes to fix his roof
I remember Eddie Albert as the warden in the original movie the longest yard with Burt Reynolds
I absolutely loved Pat Buttram's voice.
Yeh where was E flat aka Eb
Love that show and still do. And the people were the best. May they rest in heaven together. ♥️🙏🏼
Eddie Albert's son, Edward, predeceased him.
@@michaelklein5242 Eddie was buried next to his wife, who passed away in 1985, before Eva's passing.
Next to Ed Asner, I think Eddie Albert is my all time favorite. rip
Eva my idol. I see a lot of myself in her. She's so beautiful ❤️
Do you get allergic schmelling hay too?
I loved Green Acres while growing up, figuring it for a hilarious but unrealistic look at rural living.
Then, at age 24 I moved to a rural county and learned that the show was quite _realistic._
I don't know you but I love you for posting this full reunion. Thank you isn't enough.
I loved Green Acres I loved of Arnold the pig
Hello Paul, how are you doing.
Not a single mention of Eb the hired hand probably the funniest character on the show
1 year later, they were asked to do a reunion TV-movie, "Return to Green Acres."
This show was so brilliant and a wonderful part of my childhood.
Me too, and I still watch it every night in Me 📺 TV

That show makes you young at heart. 😁📺It’s on ME TV channel.
I was lucky enough to meet Mr.Albert in NYC..years ago..he was nothing like "Mr.Douglas"..he was a sweet and kindly gentleman..and I corresponded with Mr.Melton..before he passed away.
Absolutely loved these people. Looking forward to the Green Acres marathon this coming weekend.
I just found these reruns on Tv. Love it
Such a funny show. I loved Eddie Albert and Eva Gabor together. They had so much chemistry together.. She was so beautiful and sweet. Eddie was an amazing husband for her ALso loved Tom Lester as Eb. He seemed like he was their real son. He had such a sweet personality. The entire cast was superb and made me laugh all the time. I stl watch the reruns every night. Never .miss them if a I can help it.
Great show. Mr Kimball was my favorite. I couldn't stop laughing.
I was a little boy back in the 70's watching this show's reruns with my parents.
Green Acres, Hogan's Heroes, Get Smart,Mash, Seinfeld...5 best sitcoms ever.
Awe I was waiting for Eb, he was still alive when this aired.
Loved this RUclips video! Hank Kimball was my favorite character!!!
One of the funniest running gags on the show was how Oliver could never finish his sentences before being interrupted.
One of my favorite shows and loved all the characters. Green Acres we are there!
One of greatest shows ever created!
Silliest,but not great
I still watch Green Acres to this day. reruns. Decades !!!
Enjoyed each and every episode and the Characters!!!
I LOVE PAT BUTTRAM WITH ALL MY HEART AND ALWAYS WILL
Those of us lucky enough to grow up watching 1960's, 1970's and 1980's TV got the benefit of writers that had previous stage and movie writing credentials as they then migrated from those venues to the media call TV. The same can be said of TV actors brought up in stage and movie productions.
This was really nice ! Thank you. We watch Hooterssville, on MeTV every night in Michigan.
Sadly with the passing of Tom Lester in 2020 who played Eb Dawson, none of the original cast member stars are still with us today.
It's still shown in reruns in my city. A funny show.
They show it on MeTV now, which airs all over the country on most cable providers.
Thousand oaks California was the perfect filming locations for Hooterville and the Douglas farm, it was so beautiful back in the 60s, it's all gone now and just another sprawling neighborhood
Eva Gabor lives on in my heart continuously and eternally.!!! R.i.p. loveliness!!!!!!!
My german shepherds name is Oliver Wendell Douglas. Green Acres was my favorite show growing up.
I gotta admit, this interview is a gem. Good luck with your channel.
Thank you
Rest in peace to the whole cast such a wonderful show
Loved Pat Buttram. “I just might have one of them on the truck.”
Thanks John. This is so nice.
You're welcome
I love it because it come from my childhood.
Great show. It was so nice to see these actors again I really miss the show and hope I can see it on television when I can or you tube if it's on here. I used to laugh so hard and would imitate Mr Kimble sometimes. All the actors were hilarious as their characters, I love them all including the animals.
Eva was awesome! She was real cool! 🙂
I love all Paul Henning's shows! He's from my hometown of Independence, Missouri.
One of the funniest shows ever. Paul Henning, the writer and creator of the show, should be commended for the hysterical and frankly, outlandishly ridiculous plots that were so funny you laughed during the entire show.
I was just a young lad when GA was on TV. I loved it. Great casting and acting.
Enjoyed this! Thank you!
Eva was a classy lady and that show was fantastic. Hard to believe she passed away almost 30 years ago.
Eva Gabor and Eddie Albert two special actors who were so regular and great.
One of the best all time TV shows, I loved this and the other Paul Henning shows as a kid. Eva amazingly gorgeous here at 70 yo...Too bad this was so rushed....
Eva was also great as a Match Game panelist.Sid was also Friendly Freddy (the con man)on Gomer Pyle.
