“Cemetery Gates” is one of Pantera’s best-known songs. Musically, it’s a melodic metal track that mixes acoustic and electric guitar, while its lyrics contain themes of death, doubt, and depression.
During recording, vocalist Phil Anselmo had trouble with his voice and was stuck on a part of the lyrics for a long time. He finally got it right when he took a break from using marijuana and, as recommended by producer Terry Date, took a sip of alcohol to help warm his throat.
Anselmo commented:
“This was only my second time in the studio and I hated it. There’s a note that comes up twice on Cemetery Gates that I couldn’t do for two hours. I broke a chair, I was so frustrated. Everyone was begging me, ‘Don’t smoke weed. Get your best voice.’ And I said, ‘You mean I have to do all this shit sober?’ Then Terry said, 'Well, Chris Cornell from Soundgarden used to drink port because it warms his throat.' And I thought, oh, good idea. Bingo. So I was sitting there, drinking all that damn sweet wine, trying to get a little buzz. I still don't know if it helped me hit that damn note, but I finally did it.
Guitarist Dimebag Darrell's solo is considered one of the greatest of all time and was ranked 35th on Guitar World magazine's "50 Greatest Guitar Solos."

"I came home with a really good buzz, picked up my guitar, turned on the recorder, turned it up really loud, and just played. I played three solos in a row, didn't bother listening to them, and fell down not so happy. The next morning I woke up thinking I had a lot of work to do… I almost started over, but then I decided to take it easy and listen. So I turned on my recorder, put on my headphones, and bam! There it was!" The first solo I played the night before. The second and third weren't bad, but the first one had that first take magic! So I didn't touch it."
