Fun fact: Judy’s nose twitched when Gideon was bullying her because she was scared, but it didn’t twitch when Nick pretended to be savage, hinting that she was acting.
When Dylan was talking about how Disney needs more movies where they teach kids to give up on their dreams, instantly made me think of "Monsters University" and the real message it teaches that no matter how hard you may try in life, there's just some goals you can never achieve. Not only does it teach this real message but then it shows that it's okay when things don't go your way and that when one door closes, another one opens and you begin to realize that there's so much more to life than a dream and that while you cannot achieve one goal, there's another one that's made just for you, you just have to let the first door close. It's one of the realistic pixar movies for that and also the reason why it's one of my personal favorites.
I may be reaching here, but it's also pretty great to watch as a disabled person. Obviously it could apply to anyone, but people often tell me I can achieve anything I set my mind to, and the only thing disabling me is my mindset. So watching a film where the main character can't achieve their goal, but is still happy and still achieving other things felt like a breath of fresh air.
@xeoney yes that's a perfect correlation! Def not stretching at all, the movie was made so that people who were born or just have disadvantages know it's okay when things don't turn out the way they want, they still have a purpose that they just dont know yet 😌 Mike wasn't able to become a scarer because of his looks, which is a very harsh reality, but for a kids movie, they gave the message perfectly and I rlly wish we had more movies like that. It's such a touchy topic but it's a message I wish we could see more often, especially when it's done right
Animal wise, Mr. Big was perfectly cast using the arctic shrew instead of the polar bear. They're vicious, carnivorous, at times even cannibalistic in their ruthlessness to survive in an unforgiving environment.
Definitely, they also have to consume more than their body weight everyday. Sort of reminds me of a funny tho kind of scary fact, that the dog breed with the biggest teeth per pound.. is a type of small terrier! And that one of the most aggressive dog breeds in the work is a Dachshund.

It still lends to the idea of prejudice - grouping a whole species to some idea they’re “naturally dangerous” is something like race or just judging them off something that’s out of their control
The small herbivores like Judy and Bellwether are supposed to represent white women (small, weak, incapable, can be pushed around/aside) and the specific prejudices that white women face. The predators are supposed to represent racial minorities like Black people and Native Americans (agressive, savage, “bad nature”) and the specific prejudices that they face. Minorities like white women have their own struggles and are still applicable as minority hires, but they can still be racist because racial minorities face different struggles than women and cognitive dissonance becomes increasingly prevalent the more privilege an individual has. Often those in power pit minorities against each other to maintain said power and there are also issues of things like intersectionality. The movie is accurately representing the messiness that issues like prejudice have in real life.
The reference to Godfather was actually very relatable to many people. Maybe it's more for the european audience, because we usually prefer oldschool movies rather than modern cinema.
It really annoyed me that they changed the name of this film in the UK to Zootropolis because it completely took away the fact that Judy did see Zootopia as a 'Utopia' and it turned out it wasn't and just kinda wrecked the message of the whole film
I think it would have been funnier if he says that every rookie gets parking duty, but he comes across like yeah I don’t want bunnies in the frontline.
Ok but this movie actually is one of the few who manage to catch me off guard with their "secret villain" plot twist because she is always there but she never really shows us any emotional responses
A fun fact I think Dylan would like a lot; In the original draft of the movie, the Predators all wore electric collars that would zap them whenever they got to emotionally excited. ANY emotion. The reason being that this was seen as the only way Predators could be trusted and they could co-exist. "Zootopia" was a secret theme park run by Nick that would allow Predators to remove their collars for a few hours before having to put them on and go back to society. There was a pretty dark scene that was semi-animated, with a Polar Bear cub having a birthday party where he's old enough to now require a collar. He's excited, as he thinks he can be like his mother and father now, only to get a sharp shock when he starts celebrating, at which point he realises what they're actually for. Nick and Judy can do nothing but watch him cry with his parents about it.
Yup; I remember reading about that draft and seeing an unfinished animation with the polar bear. I feel like that concept could have been even better than the movie we have today, but I can see why it was changed.
The DMV sloth scene was made to be a fun teaser for the movie, before they had an actual working trailer. The animators were just having fun with the gags. They kept the whole thing in the movie because the public responded so well to it.
Honestly wish it stayed a teaser. I do like that it gives it more groundedness within the movie, but I I'm not a huge fan of rewatching the same gag, especially a slow one that's kinda played out by the end of it.
That was somewhat plagiarized-using big brother surveillance. Disney and other writers and so-called 'creatives use a very intrusive big brother surveillance state and borrow their intellectual property bits from unsuspecting people who cannot defend themselves...Ask me how I know [why I am responding to your specific comment...]
I watched this with my parents a while back, and out of everything we've watched I've NEVER heard them laugh so loudly at a gag. We had to pause the movie so they could collect themselves. 100% successful in catering to adults lol
I really don't know why but Nick's bullying back story hits close to home and it makes me cry every time, maybe it's just the way they made him a cute and cuddly fox puppy but it just 😭🤧🤧
I’ve never seen someone predict so much of a movie and then instantly undermine it every single time, this was so freaking funny lmao Best reaction I’ve seen in a while
It kinda made me so happy that Dylan didn't even consider bellwether could be the villain (the same guy who ends up accurately predicting entire movies plot just from the opening scenes) just goes to show how great the writing is
Nah it really was the easiest thing to guess . This came out right after frozen so disney was still going for the whole "plot twist villian" thing. The first time I saw this movie I guessed it was her the first time she came on screen.
The movie was originally gonna be a lot darker; there's a deleted scene called "Taming Party" and just....man. The emotions in even a deleted scene are palpable. You feel Judy's confusion at seeing a taming party, where a polar bear cub gets a shock collar (all predators had them in this version), you feel Nick's fear and resentment and also resignation that this is how it is, you feel the father's concern....I almost wish they went with this version, but I understand why they didn't. Seeing baby Nick be forced into a muzzle is rough enough.
At around 7:40 when you said “oh, there are mice”, I actually yelled “those are hamsters you DUMB B*TCH” I’d like to apologize for the outburst, emotions were still running high from the “I’m not a botanist, idk animals” moment I’d also like to apologize for the fact that they’re lemmings, not hamsters
The great thing about the otter attacking the jaguar is that the real-world animals do actually come into conflict and the giant river otters do often drive the big cats away because of how aggressive they are. It's a neat connection
As a kid, I absolutely did not understand The Godfather reference in this movie, but my dad was laughing his head off with the random other father of some kid next to us in the theater. It’s for them.
Also, the godfather is one of the most famous movies of all times. People of all ages discover it and watch it for the first time every year. If it's a cult classic, doesn't matter how old it is, you can still reference it. That's the rule.
I didn’t know it was a reference to the Godfather, but I’ve seen that seeing like done and other movies so I knew it was like a common thing that people did with villain characters or like mob characters
@@RB01.10 Obviously. Therefore, you are right, children (main target audience for Zootopia, despite the more adult subtext this movie has) will not have watched the Godfather. They may know of it indirectly, like Dylan, through one of the many references in popculture regarding the Godfather. Even some children might already know that this very specific accent means it's a mafia boss ^^
The thing about her being assigned to parking duty first, it actually makes sense: imagine what happens if a newbie gets thrown into the worst duties first without having the-on-ground experience and the precinct doesn't really know what you can do. It's actually a way of keeping her safe and seeing just how determined she is to stay.
Funny you should mention that… In real world policing there is a thing called FTO or PTO depending on your department which is a Field Training Officer who rides with and supervises the fresh rookie for their probationary period after academy. They will absolutely throw you in the deep end of junkie town and tell you to figure it out. You can for sure get stuck with the shittiest places on night shift as a rookie because you have no seniority to pick your beat.
@@OnlyCops This is the real answer. Your FTO will usually be riding with you (you’ll be riding with them to be more accurate) and will work with you and guide you through your first few months. Then you’ll likely be put on the graveyard shifts.
Well it's implied that she's being discriminated because of her size (she wasn't the only new recruit yet only she got meter maid). And it would be more practical/realistic to pair her up with a senior office that she can shadow and learn from. Otherwise she'll never learn skills.

@@matthewvink4065 I considered it for a bit, even spent a summer as an apprentice to one who was researching forest development and regrowth. A lot of time out in the field to document the vegetation at sites that had been studied for decades as well as new ones. Specifically, regrowth from a forest fire and new land/sand/gravel bars recently formed by rivers shifting. On a new sandbar that has Alder trees(shrubs technically) just starting to take root? There can be over 500 of those tiny little tree sprouts in a 10 foot circle... I know because I had to count them. Ended up keeping my plant studies as a hobby, my interests always leaned more towards the food and medical use of wild plants anyway, but it was a great summer. 9:25 I knew I couldn't be the only one who felt she, and the movie by extent, was in the wrong getting upset over getting an easy job on her first day in the live police force in the middle of a big city. Like surely some time for adjustment is in order. And it's not like school teaches you everything you need to know. They aren't going to give a brand new, fresh from the academy cop even a piece of such a massive case on her first day. Besides, that stuff does still have to get done, policing isn't all fighting crime. It's mostly paperwork and waiting. Also, for the walter white sheep pun: Woolter white.

That Godfather reference was the thing I loved the most in this movie hahaha. I always love that reference (and any other from those movies) whenever I watch it on any piece of media, it never gets old to me.
tbh the idea of Zootopia's society has a lot of plotholes, but what really sells this movie are the fabulous character dynamics and that not just the protagonist has an arc, but nearly every single person isn't what they seem to be in the beginning. Makes it somehow deeper and more meaningful than many other movies, especially ones that are aimed towards children.

One of the things I love about this movie is that they never make Nick and Judy romantic. The focus on their friendship growing and being important is so refreshing, especially being a male/female relationship. As someone who has a lot of male friends and has spent years explaining that I've never dated/slept with them, it's so refreshing to see Edit: typo!!
They wouldn't have promoted weird relationships in a movie for the family- weird meaning kind of biologically wrong, seeing as they're not of the same species and are even prey vs predator. But on the other hand a lot of people thought they were gonna end up romantically 😭 like when they're in the sky tram and she puts her hand on his arm, when they tell each other they loved each other, and overall their teasing and witty dynamic could have been easily made for an enemies to lovers relationship. And the writers even wrote a scene where they were in her apartment, and then her parents call and think Nick is her boyfriend. But yes I agree, they had a really nice platonic bond and I stan their friendship.
@@OneRandomSam I mostly agree, but they did the predator/prey attraction on a smaller scale with all the Chief loving Gazelle jokes (It's very clear he's attracted to her), so I'm very happy they didn't even hint at that with Nick and Judy!!
Well but my problem is that they had so much chemistry in this movie they might as well have lol. Idk if it was the voice acting or animation. I mean it was prob both. But if they’re gonna do a platonic friendship at least make it very platonic

I'm two minutes in and I already agree with this comment.
Well
I thought he’ll like him too cus he’s similar to Flynn Ryder but he didn’t seem to
_Calm down, son, it’s just a drawing, not the real thing._
“I want a zootopia 2 where she has to choose between the mob family and the force.”
Mob family, easily. They treat her well and respect her
I think it would have been funnier if he says that every rookie gets parking duty, but he comes across like yeah I don’t want bunnies in the frontline.
Dylan’s ability to get things so right but so wrong at the same time makes me laugh
Dylan talking about crushing dreams and not talking about his college shutting down is MONUMENTAL
it was implied.. inaudibly 🤣

*Dylan not realizing botany is the study of flowers* “I’m not a botanist, I don’t know a lot about animals.” 😂
Oh my GOD, that’s heartbreaking just to read. I can see why they must’ve deemed that “too much” for a children’s movie.
@@Knicole927 Yup.
I totally forgot this, but I remember watching that!
Yup; I remember reading about that draft and seeing an unfinished animation with the polar bear. I feel like that concept could have been even better than the movie we have today, but I can see why it was changed.
I just watched the video and my heart is shattered 🥺
I really don't know why but Nick's bullying back story hits close to home and it makes me cry every time, maybe it's just the way they made him a cute and cuddly fox puppy but it just 😭🤧🤧
I’ve never seen someone predict so much of a movie and then instantly undermine it every single time, this was so freaking funny lmao
Best reaction I’ve seen in a while
It kinda made me so happy that Dylan didn't even consider bellwether could be the villain (the same guy who ends up accurately predicting entire movies plot just from the opening scenes) just goes to show how great the writing is
Nah it really was the easiest thing to guess . This came out right after frozen so disney was still going for the whole "plot twist villian" thing. The first time I saw this movie I guessed it was her the first time she came on screen.
Also throw in the obvious "wolf in sheep's clothing" thing
I think Dylan just fails a lot when women are the main character or the villain
For a second I thought he actually knew and was just being sarcastic
Nah, the setup in the movie just wasn't that good.
I swear there was a scene like this when I watched it could they delete it later?
dylan looking for a walter white animal pun and then not realizing the movie did it for him (woolter and jesse)
32:11 Idk why, but she would make a good villain. Maybe she turns the predators feral to get rid of them?
At around 7:40 when you said “oh, there are mice”, I actually yelled “those are hamsters you DUMB B*TCH”
I’d like to apologize for the outburst, emotions were still running high from the “I’m not a botanist, idk animals” moment
I’d also like to apologize for the fact that they’re lemmings, not hamsters
.
You ok?
My exact reaction haha every time u rewatch it
my man corrected himself and said sorry before anyone said anything
Actually the first ones were hamsters, the ones Nick wwas selling popsicles to are lemmings. You were right.
The great thing about the otter attacking the jaguar is that the real-world animals do actually come into conflict and the giant river otters do often drive the big cats away because of how aggressive they are. It's a neat connection
I see you are a botanist
That's what I was thinking too! River otters are pretty vicious
Except for the fact that South American Otters can be 6 ft long, and attack in groups.
33:35 I had to laugh so much at Dylan‘s denial phase 😂😂
As soon as there’s an awkward pause in one of Dylan’s videos I just know it’s the audible sponsorship being forced into our brains ✨
The trick is to skip over the whole thing and continue watching the movie reaction.
@@leovk5779 To be fair though, it’s an R-rated film with tons of strong violence so it definitely really isn’t appropriate for young kids
If you were a kid when this came out you still are.
Dylan's unwavering confidence when he says "fee-ral" is making me question if I've just been pronouncing it wrong my entire life
I had to go look it up cause he made me doubt 😭
nah dylan's always right
Is it crazy that I've always pronounce it that way?😭
dylan: 'beak'
thinks about it for a second: 'snout?'
Justifies his mistake with: 'I'm not a botanist'
35:55 HOW IS HE SO GOOD AT GUESSING THEM RIGHT!?😂 except for who the villain was😂😂
The thing about her being assigned to parking duty first, it actually makes sense: imagine what happens if a newbie gets thrown into the worst duties first without having the-on-ground experience and the precinct doesn't really know what you can do. It's actually a way of keeping her safe and seeing just how determined she is to stay.
For real! She's lucky they didn't have her doing paperwork the first month before ever even getting OUT there!

Fun fact, Mr. Big is an Arctic Shrew, they eat about twice their body weight a day due to having an extremely high metabolism. So even though they are tiny creatures they are very prolific predator's that would be terrifying if they were enlarged to even the size of a house cat.

I like Earth Science, Biology, and Zoology as well, practically memorized the animal encyclopedia set I had as a kid. 😋

I knew I couldn't be the only one who felt she, and the movie by extent, was in the wrong getting upset over getting an easy job on her first day in the live police force in the middle of a big city.
Also, for the walter white sheep pun: Woolter white.

dylan not being able to guess who the villain is until the end means the movie is TOP TIER 😭

Its not just a Godfather reference, its Marlon Brando reference. Which i appreciated a lot. I watched the trilogy ages ago. I just knew it existed and was one of the greatest rated films of all time, it just felt like its something i HAVE TO watch, something legendary.
Also i watched Zootopia with my older sister and mom. So yeah, it doesnt have to be grandchildren. Mom is 57 rn
I love how you can always tell when Dylan is about to mention audible cause he gets exited that he’s about to pull off a smart and funny transition to his sponsorship
It's absolutely insane to me that Dylan's wild out of pocket nuclear warfare conclusion turned into the correct ending because he just used less words each time he kept saying it.
I aspire to have the same level of confidence as Dylan saying “I’m not a ✨botanist✨”
Do those plot holes interfere with the plot at hand, though?
@@Wired4Life2 not really. But the more I think about the city’s concept, the more I’m concerned about the feasible structure. Has nothing to do with the movie itself, but if you build me a world, I’m going to think it through and look for irregularities 😅

One of the things I love about this movie is that they never make Nick and Judy romantic. The focus on their friendship growing and being important is so refreshing, especially being a male/female relationship. As someone who has a lot of male friends and has spent years explaining that I've never dated/slept with them, it's so refreshing to see
Edit: typo!!
I guess he should watch beastars
@@OneRandomSam I mostly agree, but they did the predator/prey attraction on a smaller scale with all the Chief loving Gazelle jokes (It's very clear he's attracted to her), so I'm very happy they didn't even hint at that with Nick and Judy!!
This’ll sound weird if it isn’t, but are we really doing this copypasta?
Well but my problem is that they had so much chemistry in this movie they might as well have lol. Idk if it was the voice acting or animation. I mean it was prob both. But if they’re gonna do a platonic friendship at least make it very platonic
