Fun fact: Lin explained that the Sondheim message over the phone didn’t satisfy the man himself (he said he wouldn’t word it like that) so he decided to write and record it the way he would have say it. That’s some great and unexpected cameo! Especially since he passed recently
That moment when you realize all the ticking was never about him making the deadline for his musical, it was about how his life expectancy was coming due sooner than expected. Or, alternatively: how we got to see all his blood, sweat and effort, only to have the timer suddenly go off right when we stopped listening for it.
That right there is why I can never bring myself to criticize RENT despite there being plenty of things about it that I could criticize. But how can I say anything bad about the legacy of a man who literally DIED for his art? I never speak ill of the dead unless they truly deserve it, and from what I can tell Johnathan Larson was a decent guy.
@@ninakrishnamurthy6674 Lot of critics forget that the issues with RENT all have a simple explanation: the musical was and has remained unfinished all this time.

Andrew Garfield can do everything! He's, in my opinion, one of the best actors in the industry. Every performance he's committed fully and brings out such depth and relatability to his roles. Loved him and this movie and I hope he wins an Oscar for this
Different cameos in that one scene: Bernadette Peters (“Sunday”), Chita Rivera (“Chicago”), Joel Grey (“Cabaret”), Phylicia Rashad (“Into the Woods”), Brian Stokes Mitchell (“Ragtime”), André De Shields (“Hadestown”), Howard McGillin (“The Phantom of the Opera”), Chuck Cooper (“The Life”), Bebe Neuwirth (“Chicago”), Beth Malone (“Fun Home”), (“Rent” original cast members)Adam Pascal, Daphne Rubin-Vega, Wilson Jermaine Heredia, and Miranda and Renée Elise Goldsberry and Phillipa Soo (Hamilton). FYI I can majorly nerd out about this musical
Also Tick Tick Boom was a one man autobiographical show he wrote and and produced after Superbia was turned down and before he started Rent. It was later moved to off Broadway after Rent took off where they added the two accompanying roles to stand in for Karessa/Susan and Michael/Roger. I’m the movie they based it off the off Broadway version to make it more appealing. All but the song “Swimming” are from that show, though I think it was just cut from the show. Oh the fact that Stephen Sondheim himself recorded the voice message to Jon on the phone because he thought the original lines on the script was not something that he thought himself would actually say... And that he passed away the same month shortly after this movie was out, just makes my heart broke and heal itself at the same time TT I cried almost every time watching this film

Being an artist in this awful society and having a movie that represents that funny feeling of never actually living is an awesome thing that Lin made, not only is the whole story heartbreaking but it also can give you hope where you thought there was none
I didn't truly appreciate this movie until the end. Because, mistakenly, I thought this was going to be about the creative process behind making Rent. But not only was I wrong, it turned out to be the story of the thing he had to do first so he COULD make Rent. You get what I'm trying to say?
It's actually funny that you inserted that clip of Raúl Esparza in Company at the end, considering he originated the role of Jon off-broadway for Tick Tick Booms first run. He's the one you hear on the OG cast recording. ...also interesting is the parallels between Jon and Bobby's anxiety. It makes me wonder, with how close he worked with Sondheim, if Jon was influenced by Company for the premise of Tick Tick Boom
4:12 it originally was the rock monologue they keep referring back to, then in 2001 it was made into a 3-person musical. There were 2 revivals, and now the movie :)
Andrew actually learned how to sing for this movie and you missed “Chris Jackson “ sitting in front of Stephen Sondheim at end of the movie. Jackson is another Hamilton Alum, he plays “George Washington “ could you also review “In The Heights” it was Lin’s first hit on Broadway before he did Hamilton
I love how lin manages to include chris in all of his projects haha especially cuz he literally told chris that if he's in charge- chris will always have a job!
4:33 the character of Roger is based off of the real-life actor, Roger Bart. Jonathan and him were actually friends back in the day, both working at diners and helping eachother with their creative projects
And Roger Bart sang the background vocals for Jonathan’s autobiographical “rock monologue” show where he (Jonathan) originally performed many of the songs that are featured in this movie. You can find video of their original performance on RUclips!
Roger Bart also won the Tony for playing Snoopy in You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown in 1999 and even thanked Jonathan at the end of his acceptance speech... in the movie, if you look closely during the first diner scene during the 30/90 number, you can see that the customers in the background are Roger Bart and James Nicola (the artistic director of the New York Theatre Workshop, where Jonathan Larson presented his original Tick Tick Boom monologue as portrayed in the film and where Rent had its Off-Broadway debut - they were able to film all the main performance stuff at the actual NYTW... the space wasn't initially available and they were originally gonna film it on a set but b/c of the pandemic, they were able to get the space and film there)!
One of my favorite things I saw in an interview about this movie goes right along with what you said about Lin doing an amazing job adapting it. Lin said before they even filmed, they workshopped it for quite a while and treated it just like any one of his new musical projects. If something didn’t work, it was cut, if a song needed to be placed somewhere else they did it. So essentially, he did just what you said- took what was great about the material, but allowed what needed to be changed to change. May all future adaptations take note of such an amazing creative process!!!
This man’s gone from Peter Parker to Desmond Dawes to Jonathan Larson. Andrew Garfield has some of the most impressive range I’ve seen, all that’s missing is a horror movie and he’s pretty much hit all bases
@@MoviesinDepth I’ve been singing all my life and when I tried to record a cover of Therapy from this movie and that is probably the hardest song I’ve ever tried to attempt. The fact Andrew learned to sing and play piano in a year and performed this well is astonishing
so if y'all didn't know, tick tick boom was a musical written by Jonathan Larson and the parts where they're on the stage singing are parts he wrote, everything in between is biography from lin. also, the brunch scene, every extra is an extraordinary mind from the musical theater life that lin was friends with.
Jonathan Larson actually took videos of his whole apartment for insurance purposes, and they took those videos and recreated an exact replica of his apartment. That was really Sondheim on the answering machine.
The answer to “how many of these people are cameos” is ALL OF THEM. There isn’t a single character in this movie that isn’t a broadway star, or Larson’s actual friend/relative, or Lin’s kent. And that Sunday scene is literally the greatest and brightest of all time.
I couldn’t believe that Andrew sang the song Why live in the movie. They filmed this shot in the first week if shooting!! That just shows how amazing Andrew is as an actor and singer. He deserves an Oscar. End.
The movie is incredible in every way, and there's something that just extra gets me about Lin, having basically taken up Jonathan's mantel of bringing in the next generation of musical theater lovers, being the one to tell his story, and the fact that Sondheim (who mentored both of them) featured so prominently and the movie came out just before he died ... just the energy of 3 theater legends and the impact they had on each other, it gives me chills
I love how the way they end it. I didn't fully notice it until watching a couple reactions, but I think it's kind of ingenious. First, they cut off the final number just before the resolution note. Then, Jonathan is playing happy birthday, and stops playing right before the resolution note. Then, it shows him breathe in to blow out the candles and make a wish, but he never breathes out. To me, it symbolized Jonathan Larson's life. He died before the resolution.
Oh my god ... I love this film. I cried at the end. Because ... we always think we have all the time in the world to fulfill our dreams and live our lives, when in reality: We could die at any second. (Sounds dramatic, but ... sadly it is true.)

I'm pretty sure I rewatched this movie more than any other movie in my entire life and counting. I watched it 5 times in less than a week of first seeing it. That was the last week of December into new years lol. 4 times with different people and 4 times by myself in between (well, one was a watch party) so far. I’m not sure if you know this but this is already a musical by John Larson before he created rent. Just with you saying “I can already see them making this a musical” it is already one and the movie has been made as a celebration on John Larson and his life/legacy x

The most favorite moment has to be seeing the actual Julie Larson (Jonathan’s sister) watching Andrew act as her brother towards the end of tick tick boom.

11:16 - fun fact, in the screenplay the direction for this is "Jon, wearing an identical pink hat turned to the side, raps with a mic, hopelessly Caucasian."
Roger who is backing vocals is based on actor, singer, musical guy Roger Bart & if you go look at tick tick boom footage of Jonathan on RUclips you'll see Roger behind him doing vocals. The guy from pitch perfect(Utkarsh/UTK Ambudkar) was originally meant to be Aaron Burr in Hamilton. But he was having issues with addiction. He's in Lins improv hip hop group Freestyle Love Supreme. Roger also makes a cameo in the film he's in the diner behind the scenes. I want to see tick tick boom live even though it's different to this movie.
7 months later, how long have you been listening to that playlist on repeat. For me, since "Tick Tick Boom..." released on Netflix. Everyday, everywhere, anywhere.
I loved tick tick boom❤️❤️❤️ not to mention rent is my third favorite musical of all time. The filming of this is so perfect along with west side story, and in the heights.
I fell in love with Tick Tick Boom when I was 17 and now I’m 32. Never did I guess it would’ve ever have been made into a movie. I’m SO happy it did though!!!!
Roger is based on Roger Bart ( desperate housewives, the Producers, back the the future the musical) he also does a cameo he's sitting at the table at the moondance in the beginning of the movie)
Rene elise goldsberry was also mimi in rent at one point... the original cast members of rent were in the sunday scene... 2 from the original cast of chicago... andre de shields famous for Hair and currently in Hadestown and there's more those are just the ones I remember off the top of my head
Hi hello I know it's been a year since you posted this video but I just stumbled across it and let me just say: the reference to Drew Gasparini's "It's kind of a funny story" took me so off guard you don't understand. That's such a niche reference and a show I absolutely adore and I just had to mention it haha.
I’m pretty sure that buzzfeed about all og the cameos in this movie and it’s facinating that almost every one in the diner and in the audience the first time we Stephen are all musical theater people. And the woman in the videos of John and Michael from school is lin’s old teacher
You know who Roger Bart is? That's who the character of Roger is based on. He was a real buddy of Jonathan and did back-up vocals when Jonathan performed "tick...tick...BOOM". Roger would go on to win a Tony for "You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown" and be in the original cast of "The Producers" and "Young Frankenstein" (as well as the singing voice of Young Hercules in Disney's Hercules") not to mention lots of TV and movies.
Look up "no day but today" on RUclips. It is about the life of Jonathon Larsen. I saw it before watching this and I caught a lot that had more meaning to me.
i see your 3 personal favourites and raise you with my 4 personal favourites; musicals, lin-manuel miranda, andrew garfield AND you commentating my favourite movies :)
if you watch any of the original videos of jonathan larson performing the songs from tick tick boom (there are a few on youtube!) and compare them to andrew garfield's performance you can really see that he truly BECAME jonathan. its wild. andrew garfield is SO fucking talented and this movie is SO fucking incredible

"When are they going to turn this into a full musical" Funny thing this is a full musical already, it was released around 1990 at least that's what Spotify says but yeah it's pretty cool and has some songs the movie skipped out on.
Everyone in the diner and everyone in the scene where you spotted Steven Schwartz is famous - the diner is performers and the other scene is all writers I think
I've been waiting for this!!! But I'm also mad at you. So I'll be watching this with my mean mug face - i hope you know this. Thank you.

5:08 i find this HILARIOUD because i went from theoretical astrophysics to theatre
Omg how did I miss that u watched this. Its my absolute fave movie of the year!! Its fantastic. So relatable and well made, story music. Everything. Im only a few mins in but Im excited to watch your reactions. I loved it! And cried a lot.
Just came here to say that I love Andrew Garfield, thank you for coming to my TedTalk
Glad I could be here
11:16 - fun fact, in the screenplay the direction for this is "Jon, wearing an identical pink hat turned to the side, raps with a mic, hopelessly Caucasian."
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH YOU'RE DOING THISSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS IT DESERVES SO MUCH PRAISE
andrew was truly amazing in this movie. im so excited to watch u react to tick tick boom. love you
also, it's crazy how good of a swimmer Andrew is. The stunt did not do it for him cause he said that Andrew could swim better than him
Roger who is backing vocals is based on actor, singer, musical guy Roger Bart & if you go look at tick tick boom footage of Jonathan on RUclips you'll see Roger behind him doing vocals.
This was my favorite movie that came out last year
7 months later, how long have you been listening to that playlist on repeat. For me, since "Tick Tick Boom..." released on Netflix. Everyday, everywhere, anywhere.
This.
I also loved that swimming scene. And i that time i thought that u would say the same.😂
Also good catch at the end :) I’ve always compared Tick Tick Boom to Company which makes sense since Larsen admired Sondheim so much ❤
I loved tick tick boom❤️❤️❤️ not to mention rent is my third favorite musical of all time. The filming of this is so perfect along with west side story, and in the heights.
Not to mention Andrew Garfield..yum
0:00 I can relate. My friends recommend things they know I’ll love but I refuse to watch it after a certain point. I do it all the time
I fell in love with Tick Tick Boom when I was 17 and now I’m 32. Never did I guess it would’ve ever have been made into a movie. I’m SO happy it did though!!!!
Honestly there are so many cameos that there are youtube videos about it. Basically everyone you see is a cameos or an easter egg
Roger is based on Roger Bart ( desperate housewives, the Producers, back the the future the musical) he also does a cameo he's sitting at the table at the moondance in the beginning of the movie)
I enjoy Andrew Garfield acting.
Respect.
And welldone.
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻🏆🏆
Andrew played Spider-Man, Eduardo Saverin and now Jon Larson. He really deserves to be in more movies.
Also, during the end song, Julie Larson is sitting in the audience
Whaaaaat my heart
PLEASE IM BEGGING FOR AN "IN THE HEIGHTS" REACTION! ITS ALSO A
14:59
NO PLEASE MICHAEL THAT WAS TOO SOON- 😭
The soundtrack is on re-peat since i watched the movie 😱 so goooood!
ME
It's on repeat in my brain !!
7:09 yep!!☺️
I've been waiting for this one!!! What a great birthday gift for me. Unintentional, but still.
Happy Birthday♥️
@@MoviesinDepth Thank you!
Hey love you and your videos.
Your videos are always so entertaining fun and funny to watch.
Your videos brings me happyness joy and laughter.
Thank you♥️♥️
Rene elise goldsberry was also mimi in rent at one point... the original cast members of rent were in the sunday scene... 2 from the original cast of chicago... andre de shields famous for Hair and currently in Hadestown and there's more those are just the ones I remember off the top of my head
In case nobody let you know the man Michael is based on Matt O'Grady is still alive and well today
Hi hello I know it's been a year since you posted this video but I just stumbled across it and let me just say: the reference to Drew Gasparini's "It's kind of a funny story" took me so off guard you don't understand. That's such a niche reference and a show I absolutely adore and I just had to mention it haha.
You are a legend
I’m pretty sure that buzzfeed about all og the cameos in this movie and it’s facinating that almost every one in the diner and in the audience the first time we Stephen are all musical theater people. And the woman in the videos of John and Michael from school is lin’s old teacher
I need to see that
You know who Roger Bart is?
OHHH you. I see what you did there♥️
20:11 Another Hamilton cameo! Chris Jackson aka George Washington is sitting in front of Sondheim. Never noticed it and I've watched the movie twice.
🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯
He directed and created in the heights
if you watch any of the original videos of jonathan larson performing the songs from tick tick boom (there are a few on youtube!) and compare them to andrew garfield's performance you can really see that he truly BECAME jonathan. its wild. andrew garfield is SO fucking talented and this movie is SO fucking incredible
"I'll tick tick boom you all later"
....is that..was that a threat?
People you have mussed in the "Sunday" number: Lin-Manuel Miranda, Phylicia Rashad (aka Clair Huxtable), Bernadette Peters, Chita Rivera, Bebe Neuwirth, Beth Malone, Brian Stokes Mitchell, Chuck Cooper, Howard McGillin, Joel Grey, Renée Elise Goldsberry, Phillipa Soo, Adam Pascal, Daphne Rubin-Vega and Wilson Jermain Heredia
"When are they going to turn this into a full musical"
Funny thing this is a full musical already, it was released around 1990 at least that's what Spotify says but yeah it's pretty cool and has some songs the movie skipped out on.
No, the 1992 version is Jon’s one man show. The 2001 version was the off Broadway show
Sondheim is known for mentoring other talent. The movie is as much a homage to Sondheim as to Larson. Rewatching this movie frequently.
Me
Everyone in the diner and everyone in the scene where you spotted Steven Schwartz is famous - the diner is performers and the other scene is all writers I think
It’s like a where’s Waldo of theater kids
19:09 Sondheim’s actual voice🥺🥺
That intro!!! Sir! Go ahead and speak the truth! Andrew Garfield is stunning and he is a brilliant actor.
