I've been using SU for years, but watching Square One tutorials reminds me of the basic things that I forgot or I am missing them and they will save some time when working on a model. Thanks Aaron. U R da man!!! :-)
OMG Thank you to the moon and back. I was watching another video about using the protractor to rotate things on each axis, but I did exactly what he said, but mine was not moving no matter what I did. I was about to give up. I'm looking on the right side of RUclips at the list of similar videos. I'M SO GLAD I CLICKED ON YOURS. YOU GOT ME ROTATING THE PIECE IN LIKE 5 SECONDS! Thank you sir. You have been the most helpful. Thumbs up and new sub here.
the video's are extremely helpful. so much of sketchup's functionality is very subtle and really can't be learned just by using SUp. well, at least not for those of us that are learning independently. more important, the video's are helping to raise my proficiency from basic to intuitive. to be sure, my use is very basic, mostly plans for relatively simple woodworking projects, but that is a tremendous help. i NEVER start a project without modeling it in sketchup first. and being able to model cutting diagrams is very helpful. having a plan / printout makes building projects much easier and reduces the amount of mistakes in the process. and when a project is for hire, then i can show the plan to the buyer, a reality check that i'm building what they want and a way to get their signoff on the plan. SUp is just fun. THANK YOU!!!
Rotate with the move tool doesn't seem to work if the component is glued to a plane. The rotate handles don't appear. We have to unglue each component individually for it to function. Unless I am missing something?
Hi thank you for the video but I try this with a circular shape for a roof I want to rotate with a high not an angle it rotated only from one side so the roof didn't fit the building it wasn't beautiful to see
Im new to sketchup. I want to move a component 90 degrees to the green axis, but the component wont stop at the green axis, it will return to the original axis. I just want it to stop on the green so i can then move the component into place rather than have it return to original position. What to do to make component stop going back to original? I have trouble finding where component option to select 90 degrees which i think might solve this problem.
There is nothing in a standard component that woudl cause that to happen. It is possible you are dealign with a Dynamic Component or something, though... Probably best to post an example fo what youa re seeing on our forum (forums.sketchup.com)
Aaron. I’m sure you’ve covered this in one of your thousand awesome vids. But how are you navigating all your camera angles free of your cursor. Can’t stand switching to the orbit tool every time o want to change a view.
@@AaronMakingStuff Ah awesome, thanks. I saw that pic your desk and some crazy peripherals, was wondering if it was some specialty mouse or something. Thank you!
Ah! Yeah, I thought you meant in this video! For most videos I use a 3D mouse (from 3dconnexion) to move through modes. In these Square One videos I try to just use my 3 button mouse for everything
Any way I can get this file you use to make your videos, so I can use these videos with my class? Not this one in particular, but there are some others I would love for my students to experience.
Generally, I draw a few shapes or grab a file off 3dwarehouse. And I rarely save them one my video is done... they should mostly be quick for you to recreate though!
@@AaronMakingStuff I am referring specifically to this video, ruclips.net/video/diEENeEZR4Q/видео.html. That PB cup seemed too complex for me! (This is a new class for me and I switched the curriculum from AutoCAD to SketchUp) The Resource Library is a great idea though. I don't know maybe you can start linking the files you create with the videos. I know it would help me! Thanks for all you do.
Yeah... unfortunately, I rarely keep those modes around (as I make around 150 videos each year). But I bet you could make that mode if you tried! Reach out on our forum if you need any help! Forums.SketchUp.com
Personally I dont think move tool should have the rotations! It's so clunky. If the user want rotations there is rotation tool. If I want to move it should just be move. I wish there I an option to turn The rotations off for the move tool
I HATE the Rotate within the Move tool with the fiery passion of 1,000 suns. If I use the Move command it's because I want to MOVE something. If I want to rotate, I'll use the Rotate command. Just give me the + functionality within the Rotate command please! Rotating within the Move command makes zero sense and gets in the way of a fast work flow. It's like putting an erase function in the line tool...
My second least favorite "feature" in sketchup. If I wanted the rotate tool I'd select it. Accidentally passing over these damn red checks has caused a lot of accidents over the years... but not nearly as annoying as the inability to turn off inferences. Still, understanding what triggers this behavior does help mitigate it a little, so thanks for that.
AGREE TOTALLY... absolute pain in the butt.... I move things 95% of the time.. I rotate things 5% of the time... wish I could turn the bloody thing off!.. really dumb "improvement" just slowing me down, the existing rotate tool is perfectly fine... Does anyone in the Trimble actually use SKETCHUP?... if you are going to introduce these "enhancements" at least let users have the option of toggling it off.. Hell... why didn't you just add this to the Rotate tool.... seems the bleedingly obvious place for it
Personaly, I hate this feature. Why would I want to rotate an object if I'm using the Move tool? There is already a Tool you can use to rotate an object, it's called the Rotate tool, and it's just one keypress away. I wouldn't hate it so much if I wasn't accidentally activating this feature by howering arount these "x"s all the time. If you want to improve Sketchup please give us at least the option to disable this useless and confusing behaviour.
I have heard this from a few people. You do t have to use it, but I find it to be a huge time saver when placing it moving components. Using this feature literally cuts the number of clicks needed to move and rotate a component in half!
How about focusing more on commands and other details like putting angles with number and so on, instead of empty talking. I watched a few of your videos and your not-prepared videos are irritating instead of learning
Square One videos are great. I am amazed that these videos are three years old yet completely relevant.
I've been using SU for years, but watching Square One tutorials reminds me of the basic things that I forgot or I am missing them and they will save some time when working on a model. Thanks Aaron. U R da man!!! :-)
Wow. Fantastic. I have really been struggling with both Move and Rotate. This gives me a better and easier way to do both. Thank you Aaron!
No matter how simple I think a tool is I always pick up something in these videos. It looks like this works on components and groups. Thank you!
Lovve these Square One videos. Favorite so far has been the move tool. Keep it up please.
I'm starting a cabinet building business. Your videos are invaluable. I set time aside and my kids and wife know... I'm in school
love the square one series.
Square One Videos are worth their viewing , that is for sure ....Thanks

While you are rotating, if your cursor is inside the protractor, the angle jumps by whatever is set in "Model Info -> Units -> Angle Snapping"

I have learned alot form the square 1 videos, awesome.
Your videos are a great source of tricks
Very good vídeo.
Very clear to move and rotate groups!
Great video. Learned several new things.
Another good one. Always good tips in these. Love ‘em!
Thanks for keeping it simple for us late comers:}
Freshly installed Sketchup 2022, I can't rotate groups with the move tool anymore, any option I should check ?
Thanks so much. Very clear.

Gracias!! soy autodidacta en sketch up y en inglés!! asi que voy aprendiendo!!

After installing sketchup.. The work spave area is fully black....how can i slove this.....please help me...i need it very quickly
You should probably take this question to the forum (forums.SketchUp.com). RUclips comments is a rough place to try to do support.
Is it possible to create a bounding box for something like a sphere or collection of objects without resorting to an extension you have to load?
Just select the geometry and make it a group.
really nice, thanks

Another benefit of Rotate vs. Move is array copy. It's simply not possible using rotate handles in Move.
Thank you so much.
I'm trying to find out how to flip a door swing, (hinge side), on a door downloaded from 3d warehouse.
Try the Flip tool.
Boss move! Thanks.
Thank you
Aaron. I’m sure you’ve covered this in one of your thousand awesome vids. But how are you navigating all your camera angles free of your cursor. Can’t stand switching to the orbit tool every time o want to change a view.
The middle button of a three button mouse (the scroll wheel) acts as orbit when you hold it down.

I want to know how to rotate an object on its center by drawing free hand with pencil and paper anybody there can you help me?

Like Aaron says at 3:59, you only see the rotation handles on Groups and Components. Make sure that geometry is grouped first!
