I just started watching this series to refresh myself (I'm self-taught) and I'm seriously enjoying them so far! I'm learning so many new commands that will make things I do with SketchUp even easier. I think I'll wind up doing less math because I can just multiply objects over a set distance, which I'm excited about!
I've been using SketchUp for several years and have been enjoying the square one videos. I always learn something new. I also find it convenient to use the "m" shortcut key to initiate the move command.
Thanks Aaron- another clear walk through of a single tool. Every day’s a school day! I might have said this somewhere before but my Sketchup speed improved quite a bit when I realised you don’t actually have to have the cursor anywhere near the object you’re moving if you’ve preselected. That’s incredibly useful when you’ve got lots of geometry sitting close to each other.
Aaron, Thanks for doing these Square-one videos. They are perfect for ramping up on SketchUp, but also for reminders on tricks and tips when you don't use SketchUp everyday. I think your next challenge is, when the Square One suite is complete, to start into intermediate level of SketchUp usage. Looking forward.... Thanks again.
My ultimate goal, the reason I am learning SketchUp, is to build a presentation for a two-story group home. I have the beginnings of a plot plan. The floor plans I have imported via PDF converted to a JPG. I've come pretty far for a retired 70 yo construction worker...thank you! Joining the floors and doing the roof with it's overhangs are two items I have not seen a video on as yet...I will keep looking and practicing...again, thanks!
These are invaluable. There’s always more to the commands than you glean just by the name. Stuff always happens and I’m like, “What just happened?” These help explain those episodes. Can’t wait for the bezier tool episode? That’s a real weird one (to me).
There's another cool option: you can set the distance between the copies, e.g. select Move Tool, select group or component, type distance and type how many copies.
Maybe an entire episode on what happens when holding Control (Option) or Control+Shift. I'm intrigued by the choice and limitation I've seen (but don't have a use for, so haven't found an application).
Aaron can you do a video on modeling a compound shape like a knife handle that has various different shaped crossections and not just one in the beginning morfing into another at the end
You are a great teacher, thank you! Question - How can you move an edge out perpendicular to itself? I have edges that aren't aligned to any one axis & it moves around randomly.
Activate the Tape Measure tool (Click "T"). Double-click on the edge you want to use as a direction reference- This creates an infinite construction line- Next, Select the object you want to move (Space bar activates select tool) Now hit the Move Tool (M). Hover over the construction line. (Hold SHIFT to stick the cursor to it.) Now you can use inferencing to position your start and end points, using the construction line for direction. If you need any more info just make contact through my profile details. 👍
I'm a newbie in May of 2024. I hope in later videos, you will go over what that "modifier key to copy" was at 7:08. Also, I've found that, after copying my box (did three) and go out of the command, when I try to select and resume the move command to make more copies, nothing happens.
Check out our fundamentals lessons - they'll cover all the essential tools and functions such as modifiers. But to shortcut the answer, its option/alt and that opens up additional functions per tool.
I’m new to sketchup, and have a question: If I move a one of the cubes such that one of the edges coincides with the edge of another cube, and then I try to move the same cube again the edge of the second cubes moves with the first cube. It’s as if the edges are stuck together. How do I get them to unstick? I often like to move an object onto another one before moving it again in a different direction in order to ensure alignment. Thanks for your help!
Grate JOB you doing but no body explains when things are not working Move/Copy. I bought iMac 24" M1 chip and install the Sketch up pro and I was try to draw some simple 2 x 4 then was going to move or copy, also I did create component for two items and try to move or copy it did not work. I did same to the old Imac 27 Inch I was able to make move and copy with no problem I wonder if any of you have the same problem with iMac 24 with M1 chip
When I updated to sketch up pro 2021 the default dashes did not show up next to my tags which was very useful that I used many times in sketch up pro 2020. How do I get this to show up again in my tags folder?
One thing to keep in mind is when you preselect and move geometry, your first click sets the start point in 3D space and your second click sets the finish point (like Aaron shows at 5:12.) You could also use the arrow keys to lock to a particular axis direction when you're moving something. Hope that helps move everything to its right place! We'll make a note about your video suggestion.
Hey Aaron, Thanks for that, the only thing you didn't mention is another function of the move tool on is the ability to rotate a group . Great video though these square one shorts are really good for reminding me the things I've forgotten and better ways to do things as well.
Yep, it does! Make sure you have nothing selected and switch to the Move tool. You'll see a green inference pop up when you hover the cursor over the endpoint of the line. Click once and move in the direction of the line, type in how far you want to extend it, hit Enter, and voilà! You've extended your line!
Don't know why but I can't move a group upwards (along the blue axis). Any idea why? I've been using web verison on Mac. Btw: I kinda remember I left this comment here earlier but I couldn't find it now...
Terminology matters ! Within 15 seconds you refer to "Options command" "Ctl key in Windows" "Modifier key" ----- all of these meaning the same thing. Newbies are searching everywhere for each type of key (or command) because of your interchanged terminology. Big mistake. Huge ! Instructive video though. Thanks.

Love these "Square One" episodes. Thanks Aaron
Ditto. I've learned about a number of useful features on various tools I didn't know existed.
Thanks so much for these square one videos. They are a great teaching tool helping me learn Sketchup.

This channel makes skp so easy to learn I wish there was a similar one to learn cad like this
I love your shirt thats my fav tv show series!!!
The rotate handles in the move tool are very useful, too
So true! In fact, I think that they are so useful, they are getting their own video!
My ultimate goal, the reason I am learning SketchUp, is to build a presentation for a two-story group home. I have the beginnings of a plot plan. The floor plans I have imported via PDF converted to a JPG. I've come pretty far for a retired 70 yo construction worker...thank you!

Sir Aaron you deserve our respect

Thanx guys, exactly the tips you need when specially on one time projects
I've been using sketchup for a while now and never knew about that divide span function.
Nicely done. Need to go back over it and review, but I learned something today!
the divide by is awesome!
I just found you, Square One. Fantastic job.
Excellent job.. great teacher!
Awesome. Love the vids; very helpful and perfect bite size!
Thanks for making the tool command seem easy!
Cheers mate! Great video.
Wow thanks, 10 years+ user and never knew the divide / function.
You just blown my mind with this "x3" and "/3" move option! O_O
You did a good job........ tell us about the '[ ] ' operator for move to 3 coordinate place
Great tool, had no idea it could do that !
i could hardly find all those functions by myself, thx!
And you can modify the radius of a circle with the move tool.
Really a good job. Thank you!
These are awesome videos!
Great tips, I thought I knew the move, but got some new tips.
Maybe an entire episode on what happens when holding Control (Option) or Control+Shift. I'm intrigued by the choice and limitation I've seen (but don't have a use for, so haven't found an application).
Thanks again Aaron, very helpfull!

BTW you can also temporarily change the axis to line up with the edge using Tools> Axes
i tried to divide three copies of a column component, but it never works

Another great one Aaron. I can finally stop deforming faces trying to move them. And the "divide" functionality!!!! hahaha, Cheers mate!
Good job
Thanks! Excellent!
9 minute video on the move tool? must be something in that that I didn't know !
Well... I did know all that... but you never know with Aaron's video's
thank you
Cool...... thanks!
how to move a geometry to a specific point? like to an exact cordinates I know, like for example to the origin point (0,0,0)
thank you for this!

can the move tool be used to copy circles in a circle? E.g. 5 lug holes in a wheel with a bolt circle diameter of n.
I love how ALL the tools are his "favorite" 😂
[6m 25s mark] when making multiple copies; typing in "x" then the number (eg: x5) works too...
The asterisk works as well!
Do we have an Option to turn off the rotation when select move tool?
When I updated to sketch up pro 2021 the default dashes did not show up next to my tags which was very useful that I used many times in sketch up pro 2020. How do I get this to show up again in my tags folder?
I sometimes have trouble moving things to the right spot in 3D space. A video describing how to do this effectively would be nice.

Greetings from Germany to Michael Scott at Dunder Mifflin. :)
Tip to make it easy
Yes, another good job!😃
In SketchUp 2019, when making multiple copies of a group the first one always is copied twice so i have to delete one.
awesome A
Спасибо за видео!

Does this work for a line? I want to extend a line
Yep, it does! Make sure you have nothing selected and switch to the Move tool.

Btw: I kinda remember I left this comment here earlier but I couldn't find it now...
Odds are good the thing you are moving is glued to the surface. Try right-clicking and choosing "Unglue"
Wish I could give you 10 thumbs up.
MOVE = SMOOTH ADD CTR CMD (Only for after you learn it)
wow!
6:00
!!!!
Btw nice video
