that clicking expose to go to desktop is the only real feature i have seen so far with this new os, so thanks for showing that
Whenever I want to learn about Apple software features, I only look at Gary's videos. Thanks, Gary, the way you explain is so useful and easy for anyone to understand.
This channel is my favorite for Mac stuff 👍
5:20 linkable Notes is an awesome start. Next Apple need to add link notes to Contacts calendars and Reminders and other apps, Especially in the Notes field of Contacts or Calendar or Reminders.
Thank you for this sneak peek!
Profiles in Safari and links between notes - it's REALLY cool. The rest looks like the small quality of life improvements.
Gary - appreciating your presentations! Keep it going.
A useful and informative video tutorial today! Some cool stuff here! Thank you, Gary! 👏🏻❤️
Always such great information, thank you Gary!
Thanks, Gary, for being so informative. Your knowledge about Macs inspires me to explore their capabilities further. I currently have an older Mac, and your insights make me eager to upgrade and be prepared for the upcoming macOS Sonoma. I sincerely appreciate your guidance. Thank you!
Great preview! Thanks!
Thanks very much, Gary, for this very informative video! Great to have the heads up on some of the new features in Sonoma.
Thank you the accessibility tips are great
Great heads-up and very useful. Thanks Gary!
Thank you Gary an interesting video and very useful 😊👍
Really informative sneak preview. Excellent as always Gary.
Nice! Great video!
Super version!🎉🎉
I have noticed this text size increaser on IOS - quite handy for reading in bed etc. Loving your work Gary!
Great new features.
Good informative preview, Zweigs👏🌟👍
Cool, thanks for helping us decide if the upgrade (which always has risks, e.g. Monterey had a huge bug with mounting external drives, especially with hardisks and mounting images like a .dmg).
God bless.
Thanks bunches
Good video, I appreciate the time you've spent learning & presenting this information....I'm happy because I'll never use any of this stuff until in a couple of years I'll ask if you've a video re Aerial Wallpapers & you'll point me in the right direction! 👍😊
Its like a holiday with new places to visit
Thanks Gary.
The new dynamic font size feature is very important if you want more space but don't want small text.
Profile is a very useful feature for me because I have a lot of different stuffs I look up for different jobs I do and different interest I have.
The Safari web app and the Notes linking make me think back to Vannevar Bush
So that's some relief. Thought my intel machine was about to become even "older".
This looks great. Unfortunately, the 2017 iMac I purchased 4.5 years ago is not compatible. That seems to be an unusually short lifespan for a computer these days.
I knew the dashboard would be back someday
Gary...thanks very much. Always so informative. I wonder if I will be able to install the new OS on my 2017 iMac 27"...???

Which app do you use to record Mac screen?
macmost.com/what-i-use
As always, when 'Macmost' review Apple macOS (and other stuff) one gets a better picture and understanding of Apple user experience... "Noteworthy macmost", you forgot to mention, the fact that some futures in Sonoma will be missing on Intel chipped Macbooks (2018 or later) but available for M-chipped Macbooks, with that said-- I had thought of sticking to Ventura because of the Intel vs m-chipped Sonoma variables in futures... but the upgrade to Safari (I like) kept me in between-- now seeing that widget addition came with a toggle switch (I prefer a clean desktop) and the video desktop thing... only comes in play as a Screen saver (which I saw as a additional drain to Intel chip Macbook battery and Cpu, since m-chipped Macbooks out performs Intel on battery management drainage. I'll install now, when out and make the best of it. ❤ the good work you're doing 👍
Desktop widgets at last!
It's a small feature, but I really like that Notes is getting what seems to be a collapsing sections feature within each note. I use notes for my Korean language learning, and being able to collapse grammar types and such will make navigation and review so much easier.
Since you talked about Stage Manager and said to use it for a week I have been using Stage Manager and now like it a lot. I was hoping to see the improvements in MacOS Sonoma? Perhaps in a future video? Thank you very much.
I too use it regularly, but I've searched and haven't seen anything about changes in Sonoma. The prevailing opinion seems to be that it's mostly an iPad feature that no one on Mac uses, but I use it daily and have loved how much easier it makes using my Mac.
2:36 Welcome back Konfabulator.
I absolutely love all your videos. I'm really looking forward to Sonoma's launch. I have a question and I'm not sure if you can help me answer it. I have a MacBook Air 2019 running macOS Ventura 13.4.1. and every time I open a video app (FaceTime, QuickTime, etc), I don't see the camera icon in the menu bar like you have in this video in the Video Conferencing section. I know that the features in the dropdown section of the camera (reactions and studio light) are new to Sonoma, but I don't even see the camera at all. The only thing indicating that I have a camera running is the little green light next to the camera telling me my camera is on. It doesn't matter whether I'm using the built in FaceTime camera or an external one. It's still the same thing. Is this a new feature? Is my MacBook too old? Do I have to do something to make it appear? I hope my question makes some semblance of sense.
Yes, you have a pre-M1 Mac so you likely don't have any special features for it to show.
3:20 Web Profiles are already been used in Arc Browser.
Hi Gary! Thank you for all the tips and amazing videos. I hope you can help me with this question. I have a MacBook Pro 15 2017 and although Apple says it will not support macOS Sonoma, when I click on software update and then beta update I can see both beta profiles: Ventura and Sonoma. I am afraid to select Sonoma and mess up with my computer. The thing is I thought it would not even show up since it's not supported. Comments? Thanks
No idea why you are seeing it. I don't think it would work if you selected it, but to doesn't matter as I wouldn't do it either way,
Sonoma looks like it's heading in the right direction - better usability and UX.
A few questions:
- Can we change how often these aerial desktop photos appear, such as every hour, every time we wake the computer, etc.?
- Does notes have blocks, similar to how Notion works?
The videos appear when you are on the Lock Screen. Not sure what you mean by "blocks."
Thanks for the update, Gary! The Messages app is it like iOS 17? Or still like Ventura?
Not sure yet. Probably in the middle, though maybe with all of iOS 17's features too, where applicable on a Mac.
@David Posada See 9:00
I have a funny feeling that the widget feature was removed from Mac OS X a few years ago. I remember my first Mac with Snow Leopard OS X and it had feature called "dashboard" with widget - than it was removed.
Yes, Dashboard was an old feature removed more than 10 years ago. These widgets are now based on something entirely new and hopefully don't have the same problems as the old Dashboard (CPU and memory hogs).
Thanks a lot. Can't really see the benefit of Profiles. Only using it private, so folders and subfolders work just fine. Why should I make Profiles?
I have a video coming out on this soon...
Hi Gary and thank you for your fantastic videos, they are incredible informative and easy to understand. Do we have any indication from Apple, what software we are to lose by updating to Sonoma. I ask as I have been caught out so many times over the years, “doing the right thing” and updating only to realise that in doing so completely lost functionality or use of software that I had relied upon. Apple obviously isn’t alone here, as Windows is also guilty of this. It just seems wrong that we, as consumers, pay for software, become reliant on it only to be locked out or similar due to an OS update. I have had this most regularly with iOS, but also with MacOS. Your thoughts, insights, or warnings would be greatly appreciated.
That has only happened when there is a major underlying change, Most notably when Apple dropped support for old 32-bit apps (after years of warning). There's no major underlying change here, so there shouldn't be an issue. But just check with your software makers to see. Even with the 32-bit drop it was usually just a matter of updating to the latest version of an app, or switching to a new app if the old one had been discontinued by the developer.
@@macmost thank you, and thanks again for the work you put into bringing us your great content.
thanks for that video, btw why won’t you use alt tab?
Not sure what you are asking.
@@macmost there’s this great third party app called alt tab and it lets you have a windows-like app switcher instead of macos’s garbage app switcher
how about stability? its worth to update on my only Macbook air 2022?
Right now there is only a developer beta. Don't get that unless you are a developer who needs it for a specific reason. Wait until the general release in the fall.
Have you found any existing apps that don't run correctly under Sonoma? Does it increase the amount of System Storage?
It has only been a day or so. I haven't tested many, but everything I have tried has worked. There's no major change (like 32-bit to 64-bit or Intel to M-series) that would suggest that apps won't work.
Would you mind going into voice control and trying out dictation to see if speech recognition accuracy has improved at all?
You mean as far as quality? I haven't tried it, but it always seems to work fine for me, so if you have trouble with it you'll need to try it for yourself when Sonoma comes out.
@@macmost As far as accuracy, I'm tempted to try the beta just to see if the recognition accuracy is any better. I've always had really good luck with Dragon, at least 99% accuracy on the latest version because it learns to adapt to the user's voice with each correction. Started using an iMac one year ago, the speech recognition accuracy is the only thing I've been disappointed with. As a quadriplegic, it's something I rely upon very heavily.
@@macmost I downloaded beta yesterday, speech recognition accuracy is extremely better. It was a pleasant surprise.
hello. i sometimes need to video chat from my mac with an android phone. do you recommend any app for it. normally facetime between iphones but not between iphone(mac) and any android phone. thnx
I don't have any specific recommendations, but tons of apps will do it: Zoom, Google Meet, Skype, etc.
I want to be able to turn closed captions off all the time. the settings now do not save
IIRC, Safari can also run locally written Python scripts. Would these adjustments essentially mimic Python being tunable as a stand alone.
Not sure, sorry.
Do web apps appear in the applications folder?
Yes, but in your user account Applications folder. Which makes sense, since they are for that one user account, not all of them.
❤
I hope the OCLP team brings it to unsupportet Macs
Any changes to Finder ? screen snapping ?
I didn't notice any other differences in the Finder.
@@macmost Too bad. That the biggest regressive aspect of macOS. Wonder why they don’t update the views and preview Pane and usability. I goes most modern Mac users have never used windows explorer they don’t know how bad finder is.
Just upgraded and now Safari won't load any images when viewing any webpage. Any thoughts?
Try a restart. Also restart your network equipment. If that doesn't work, call Apple Support.
What happens if you select "only in Stage Manager" and don't use Stage Manager? (What I'm trying to ask here: Is this a way to turn off the "Click on Wallpaper"?)
Yes. Only In Stage Manager makes it work like it does now in Ventura.
@@macmost Great. Thanks!
Mac OS and iPad OS are slowly merging into a new OS! ahahahaha.
Installed but can’t log in. Trying my Apple ID Ang guessing at others without knowing no log in.

2:02 is there any way to disable it?
Yes. I show how to disable it right there.
how were you able to get access to this?
www.macrumors.com/2023/06/05/apple-seeds-macos-14-sonoma-beta-1/
im downloading it now these operating systems have weird names aye where do they get the names from
Since 2013 versions of macOS are named after places in California, the state where Apple is located. Sonoma is an area with beautiful scenery and vineyards.
For someone that has three virtual Desktops, does the widgets only display in one desktop or on all? If for all, I think that's deal breaker for me.
Do you mean 3 Desktop Spaces? Yes, it displays the same for all Desktop Spaces.
@@macmost I hope they'll allow us to choose "for all" or "single" desktop. I'll keep main desktop clean, while second with some/full of widgets.
@@nuj427 What does the "clean" space (no widgets) get you? I can see it would be useful as a "distraction-free" space, definitely. But then I would just have that for all spaces and use the Notifications Center to see the widgets as it is now. Otherwise, if the widgets are covered by windows or you just don't look a them, what's the difference? Or is there some other purpose to one space with widgets, one space without, that I'm not seeing.
@@macmostYeah just that. Well I like that you can pull the widgets out now so it's all there than to bring up Notification Center and scroll... also, keyboard doesn't work there so all laid out, great. For me, OPT [ ] switches screens so boom, see few datas, and back to what I was doing.
Listen for Siri only is not available as I have done upgrade to beta version of macOS Sonoma. What to do now for?
Not sure what you are asking here.
Still hey Siri showing after upgraded macOS Sonoma, now what to do?
@@kabbyapaaul So you don't see the option I show in the video. Are you sure your Mac is compatible with the feature?
@@macmost Yes, currently using macbook pro 14inch 2021 model
@@kabbyapaaul Dunno then. Remember, this is a beta.
jeez another new operating system luckily my current iMac 2022 model will be able to handle it
My thoughts exactly. Plus, I haven’t even come close to getting to grips with Ventura yet…
You must be new. There’s been a new macOS for every single year since 2012. This is nothing new.
@@drvoodoo3073 No, not really. Been around since Snow Leopard. Just getting old I guess…
@@mike_burke I was wrong. The actual year was 2011 not 2012. The yearly updates started with macOS Lion in 2011. You can go look this up
@@drvoodoo3073 hmm that is when I started with my imac27 inch. it lasted 12 years I just replaced it
Whats new about Screen Sharing App In MacOS Sonoma ???
Haven't tried it yet, but I haven't heard of anything new there.
@@macmost The new high-performance mode in the Screen Sharing app ??
@@garrysingh4484 Haven't tested it.
instead of space it should be tab honestly, like vs code
Why is Mac trying to look like windows. Could do something about why my CD,s that I purchased years ago won’t play on iphone
Got it new worthless features but lack of backwards compatibility so it costs a lot to update everything else
A brand new OS just for desktop widgets and screensavers? lol
Apple can't win. If they add more features people complain that too much has changed,. If they add too few, then people complain there isn't enough that is new.
@@macmost Apple is a trillion dollar company. Pretty sure they’ve already won
@@drvoodoo3073 "Can't win" is an informal idiom. It means that "that success is not possible for someone in a particular situation." In this case, Apple has no way to please everyone. People will either think there are too many changes or too few.
This so depressing. Screen savers, widgets, safari update; this constitutes an OS update?
I really miss Bertrand Serlet, and his focus on substance like code efficiency, stability and snow leopard.
There is probably a lot of that under the hood too, but they aren't going to highlight it in a keynote like this. What's wrong with adding a few new features each year? Do you think Apple should do fewer new features each year, or more? Either way, there will always be people that want less and people that want more, not matter what Apple does with macOS.
You need a better audio
I think that the audio is fine. I can clearly understand it and there is no annoying background music.
@@wolfy7531 I think it's a fair point. You can hear he is an untreated room and there is audible background noise. It's not the worst sound ever but for an otherwise excellent channel it would be a definite improvement.
Have to balance reality with this. I could "live" in a room designed for sound recording. That would make for miserable days for me. I'd rather work in a normal office that I like.
@@macmost You could try using plugins to reduce reverb on your audio. Your audio is not bad, but reducing reverb would be a nice touch.
Great video, as always!
Y'know, I remember these features being present 30 years ago in X-Windows on top of a dozen Unix flavors. Think Irix (SGI), for example. And there were many others that the CDE and other desktops GUIs ran on. I'm embarrassed for Apple.
They have copied some of the features that google offers. Of course that's a good thing. I personally prefer chrome and gmail because nothing can match them and chrome is kind of universal and better for people who work with Windows too. I just hoped the new OS would have made a better image handling in the finder.
"Image handling in the Finder?" What do you mean by that?
@@macmost I give you two examples. Why do we have to select all the pictures in a folder and then click to preview and be able to scroll. We can't just click on one picture and see the preview and then scroll. Second if you click on the space bar on one picture in the icon mode then you can only use the right arrow to go to the last one in the row. after that you have to use the down arrow to move to the second row. It is not intelligent enough to go to the second row just like in Windows!
@@paulcamalin5236 For 1, see ruclips.net/video/SVttzEprNug/видео.html as there are lots of ways to preview images in the Finder. macOS is not Windows. It will never be exactly like Windows. There will always be one thing or another it doesn't do that Windows does, and vice-versa.
@@macmost You had a great video about how to manage finder windows like when it's in full size it will create a shortcut at the top and things like that. Can't find it. Could you tell which one it was. it was pretty recent like this year. I like to watch it again. Thanks!
@@paulcamalin5236 I'm not sure what you are looking for based on that description, sorry.
I miss Windows 98 🤣🤣
Me to bring it back😂
Not me. Glad to wave good-bye. However, I’m still grieving for Publisher 98.
NOT!
I retired 2 years ago as corporate and contract trainer for Windows.
I use to keep my parents with the latest versions. I moved them to Apple.
I noticed that my support requests from them went down.
After awhile, I bought an iPhone for the first time. I slowly moved to their devices over the years.
I have never looked back!
Back when we still had Steve, I so looked forward to any and all updates! Anymore I don't even care, they happen, and I never even notice a difference. Bet we can blame "work from home", where nothing gets done. I stayed 4 minutes, and nothing!!!
▪ Re Safari Profiles for windows and privacy. Why not just use Private windows other than Tab Groups don’t work with them? Having a different Space for each profile can help with keeping them separate.
▪ Larger font size by app may be a nice feature. Accessibility Zoom and Accessibility Hover Text also quite useful even if not visually challenged as Hover Text provides more info, otherwise not shown (especially slider control bars).
▪ The bigger issue is when will my 'new' computer be deemed unsupported. I bought it new in 2020, but it is tagged as a 2018 model year; and may be on the chopping block by 2024/25. Pretty young in my mind. I would be fine with security only updates, but that will be short lived, I suspect.
▪ I know people love all the new tech. Guess I’m old fashioned. Just want the basics to work more simply with a *_keyboard_* and without annoying bugs. Wish Spaces would work without acting like a ping pong ball. Wish Quicklook and Pages could read MSWord documents without buggering them. Wish I could import 20 year old Excel documents and they would be supported in Numbers. Wish I could write files to my NTFS formatted drive-download worked great but cannot upload. Wish I could print with my old printer. Wish my mac would not run out of breath and slow down every week. Once tired, wish it would reboot reliably. I have a long wish list and it’s not for new fluff- it’s to fix all the gaffs in the old stuff so it’s easier to live with.
When you close Private windows, they are gone. So if you log into several accounts in a. private window, then close it, then you have to log into them again the next time. A Profile remembers. So you can log into several accounts in a Profile window, close the window, and then open it again and you are still logged in to those accounts.
@@macmost Oh I see, that will be a *_significant_* benefit for many. Still won’t retard Facebook from tracking everything you do within that profile, I suspect.
------
Lest anyone think I was bitching too much. First error of today is having two Finder windows indicate they are the active window. One of the two is always Desktop and it always wins as the active window, which often fools me because the large Finder window staring at me indicating it is the active window (normal or full screen mode) is the one I respond to, by keyboard. I have always used Spaces and that is the issue. In Ventura, this does not happen as often so Apple has made an improvement over Catalina (which was just lame). But it still fails and this stuff is beyond old.
Gary, your videos are my go to resource so often. Thanks.
------
Correction (a day later):
One of the two Finder windows does not have to be the Desktop. I don’t typically keep two Finder windows in a given Space because I use tabs. A temporary change in behaviour put a second Finder window in Space1. First thing today after setting a Reminder in Space2 was to find two active Finder windows in Space1. Can’t say if more than two is possible and don’t care to find out.
Useless boloni. This would be a minor monthly update on window.
Apple’s os has become way too complicated.
What in Sonoma is "too complicated?"
Gary, as soon as you mention Facebook you not only give them a leg-up, but you turn us off your website. All our friends have ditched Facebook, it is creepy and insidious.
Huh? Not following you here. Facebook is just an example of a site you may want to log into with different accounts. Substitute whatever site you like: Amazon, Ebay, Reddit, etc.
Too Much, Too Fast. Makes My Head Swim.
Hate Apple loud designs. Not interested in USA scenery. Must be a bloke thing ugly backgrounds. I like my Mac quieter less distracting.
