Something else I love theatrically about Burn is how they found the exact type of paper that can burn live onstage for the exact amount of time it needs to, so when Eliza gets up and walks offstage, the paper stopped burning. It’s so cool to know that
Fun fact about real history: at the time of the Reynolds Pamphlet, Maria Reynolds had been divorced from James Reynolds for 4 years. Aaron Burr was her divorce lawyer. While not much is known of their actual relationship, Burr did later petition a Congressman to help her daughter attend a boarding school in Boston.
Another fun fact: Alexander Hamilton Jr. represented of Eliza Jumel in her divorce of Aaron Burr. Eliza and Burr separated after 4 months of marriage and the divorce proceedings took 2 years. The divorce was finalized on the day of Burr's death.
It’s important to mention that in the song “Burn” Eliza’s main heartbreak is not only him cheating but the fact he let EVERYONE know and didn’t even tell her. I honestly believe they could’ve worked it out with each other if the only person he told was her especially because affairs weren’t exactly uncommon at the time period.
Ron Chernow explained in an interview that the line "You've married an Icarus...." was actually written in a letter The real Angelica wrote to Eliza. He discovered it during his research for his biography..
I want to point out a little thing that is basically cropped out of the show. At the end of the Reynolds Pamphlet, Jefferson leans down and hands a copy of the pamphlet over to the conductor of the orchestra! When I saw it on tour, the conductor was sitting too far away, so he pulled a copy that he was hiding behind his music score and held it up for everyone to see. Proving the point the song is trying to make that everyone has read this 😂
Also random fun fact. Lin and the other directors and such worked really hard to pick the right material for the letter for burn. They knew they wanted to use real fire and needed a material that would burn just the right length of time. Not too long not too short.
13:59 Maybe because Angelica never feels satisfied so she puts more and more notes to try to fill the song because it's not enough, while Eliza just settles with a more simpler version👀?
I hope you both react to the first draft of Burn called First Burn after finishing the whole Hamilton musical! The other Actresses that played Eliza all sang it together and it was incredible! It would give you contrast to how it first started out and how the final product differs from it
I would love to see them reacting to First Burn.I like it more because it has more details on their life and family, while in Burn "the world has no right to my heart, the world has no place in our bed".
I feel so bad for Maria Reynolds. She married James Reynolds when she was 15 and he wasm grown. He abusive and threatened to kill their children. She was 23 when she met 32 year old Hamilton. He could gave actually helped her if he wanted to instead of sleeping with her. The Hamiltons were known to help people in need. That's why she went to him. Even if it was with the intention to blackmail him from the start, he was in the bad situation and if he didn't sleep with her there would be nothing to blackmail him with. Burr did help her divorce her husband who was in jail. And then comes Hamilton again and puts the whole situation out for the public.
We don't have a pile of ashes that is labeled Eliza's letters, but they know that some are missing because Alexander and Angelica and others mentioned them in their correspondence. We do know that Alexander did sleep in his office for a time after the Reynolds situation (not sure if after the Pamphlet or earlier when Eliza probably really found out) but Alexander claimed (in a letter to someone else) that he chose to stay in his office out of guilt...... likely story..... 😏 Casper, you aren't the only one for whom the infidelity hits hard. These lyrics are painful...

Burn has always been my favorite song from Hamilton. I haven’t been cheated on specifically, but I’ve still been horribly betrayed by people I thought I could trust and this song makes me so emotional sometimes
I wanted to point this out, because it's something that punched me in the face when I realized it, and I've almost NEVER seen anyone actually make mention of it; You know how each of the Schuyler sisters have their "motif" lines in their titular song? "Eliza", as it's sung, finds a reprise in the last verse of "Burn"- listen to "You forfeit all rights to my heart, you forfeit your place in our bed" etc. She's punching those same notes over and over at her moment of losing trust and faith in her husband. Her motif is having her heart broken.
Alternatively, she’s highlighting her own motive after distancing herself from Alexander. Kinda making it clearer that she’s looking out for herself in this moment
To mildly butt into the discussion about Angelica and how Hamilton may have left Eliza for her... historically speaking, it's more likely he would have left Eliza for John Laurens (if he lived), based on the letters of course...
11:29 one of my favorite details is that there is no actual choreography at that point of the song, the dancers have free reign to do any dance move they feel like…so that move was very much a choice from the dancer and we love it. The more you look at the scene the more chaotic it gets. 😂

At first I thought it was just idiomatic for someone who climed too high in the world and wanted too much and then fell because of it. But it's not only that. Because Icarus BURNED.
Thank you, Mortius and Casper, for giving us a peek into your hearts. As a mom, I wish I could walk through the screen and give you a hug and make it all better. Which is kind of silly because this is something you recorded, what? A week ago? 2 weeks ago? You're good. I know you are. But I loved this reaction, probably more than any other that I've watched you do. You guys are amazing. ❤
Eliza's actions in Burn are the most popular theory/answer for what happened to the love letters between her and Alexander. If true, Eliza was so vicious with her actions here... She literally went straight for Alexander's throat. Hamilton's legacy was like the one thing he was completely, utterly obsessed with beyond anything else, and Eliza outright made the decision to destroy it, by destroying anything that might let history make him out to be a good person, despite his affair (hence the "Burning the letters that might have redeemed you" line). She burned all her love letters from him, therefore leaving history with nothing that might have made him out to be a good husband despite his adultery. To this day, we have no idea what they said to one another in those letters (hence the "Let future historians wonder how Eliza reacted when you broke her heart" line... literally, historians do wonder what they said to one another, what happened between them). By burning the letters, Eliza had her fierce revenge by dealing a catastrophic blow to his legacy. Once again, (if true), Eliza was a total badass and completely savage in this instance. She skipped any small, petty type of revenge and went straight for the cutthroat kind. Her burning the letters was a cold, vicious, and calculated action; she knew exactly what the consequence of doing so would be for Alexander's legacy. In a way, she was erasing Hamilton from the narrative (aka history) along with herself (as seen with the "I'm erasing myself from the narrative" line) in one single, calculated action. By burning the letters, she was destroying them both in history's eyes.
This is highly speculative, and not very likely, for a number of reasons: 1) It was common at the time to burn personal correspondence that family didn’t consider proper for public consumption, or which may have been too revealing about private relationships. Martha Washington, for example, burned a great number of her letters from her husband, possibly because other accounts and correspondence suggest that he was pretty raunchy. Jane Austen’s family ruthlessly curated her letters and kept a tight chokehold on her image for generations after her death, writing memoirs, publishing selected letters, etc., but we know they also burnt some of her private correspondence. 2) Eliza was very self-conscious about her own penmanship and spelling, and it seems that she often got help to improve her letters before sending them. She didn’t want anyone besides family to see it, because she considered it embarrassing. 3) Eliza burned HER letters, but she published a HUGE quantity of her husband’s papers and writings after he died, in order to preserve his legacy. She had no interest in destroying that legacy-she’s the person who ensured he even had one.
@@kallandar13 I know. I was writing from the perspective of Eliza's actions during the time period of "Burn", trying to keep things spoiler-free (for the remainder of the "Hamilton" play). My post is only talking about/looking at Eliza's actions from the time period of "Burn" and no further.
@@kallandar13 Also, I merely wished to relay this theory (and its implications) to those reading. You are correct, it is speculated that she may have burned them during other points in her life, but her burning them after the reveal of the affair is a popular theory, given the "spiciness" of such actions occurring at that point in time. Thank you for your post, though. It was interesting to read that Eliza had difficulty with her writing. I don't think I've seen that mentioned before in what I have read.
Burn is when I broke down watching the play, and I never really stopped. Adultery and family pain is such a hard subject for me and I struggled to keep my composure through the rest of the play. I feel you Casper 😢
As soon as I heard monastery, I knew where the joke was headed. But the real question is, have you heard the joke about the guy who asked a girl to prom?
@@omarsalem1219 It seems the joke was only in the trailer for the premier (maybe it's on patreon too, idk). If you want to find the joke, just type in to google "The Monk Story with a great suspense. : r/Jokes" and you'll find it.
@@omarsalem1219 it was before the premiere, so it's not in the video. But search up "A man stays the night with monks and hears a strange sound" for the full joke
I don't think Washington was disgusted. Rather, disappointment that his almost son did this to his wife. In fact, Washington was the only one who did not turn away from Alexander in this situation.
And by the way, I'm becoming more and more convinced that Eliza herself was paranoid about the Burn. She said herself that she was looking for something in the letters that could tell her when everything went wrong. And in her pain, which flooded her, she could see what was not really in the letters.
I hope Casper is found okay after this reaction. It seemed to hit a little personal. Great reaction as always. This is my first time through Hamilton and I really appreciate all the little things you two point out.
But even when you don't know music theory, you FEEL that there is something vaguely similar going on between Satisfied and Burn even if it isn't on the same conscious level as a musician would notice it.
I love the dynamic between you two! Can’t wait to see what’s next! (And on that note, maybe some of the associated Hamilton content? The “Hamildrops” or something from the Hamilton Mixtape, or Lin’s debut performance at the White House. Or perhaps a hard pivot to something like Ride The Cyclone?) Fun additional fact: Alex Lacamoire (the music director and orchestrator) has said the arpeggio at the start of Burn is his favourite motif in the show
Love you guys and your reactions so much! Wish I could afford supporting you, but I'll be patient. Next week will be really powerful, I look forward to it so much!
To be slightly fair to Hamilton, had he kept quiet about the affair and the blackmail, their lives would have been ruined even more. Hamilton would have been arrested, tried and executed for what they were accusing him of, and almost certainly would have confiscated all his money, leaving Eliza and their children destitute and stuck living on charity from the family. Mind you, if he'd never slept with Mariah Reynolds to begin with, none of this would have been an issue, but his failing was in that, not in telling the truth.
I wanted to point out something I noticed while figuring out some of these motifs on the piano: the piano motif in burn is melodically similar to the piano that plays during the chorus of Wait For it. The piano that plays in burrs song is slower but it is very similar.
Burn was the first one to draw tears from me way back in 2016 when I first listened to this, the only other time I cried on my first listen through was in the act II closer. Now I cry on like six or seven of these songs, still to this day after listening to them non stop for years
One lyric in the chorus that gets lost in The Reynolds Pamphlet is the refrian that Jefferson, Madison, and Burr sing while the ensemble is singing he's never gonna be president now... They sing "Hey, at least he was honest with our money." I caught it when reading the captions to the song...
Lin’s greatest strength might be putting himself into the mindset of his characters. He has sometimes talked about basically inhabiting the character and writing and writing until it sounds true. Like running rusty water from a faucet until it runs clear. I’m another person who knows how it feel for a partner to cheat and he fucking nailed it. Also, my contender for greatest singing while acting crying but not actually crying actor is still Judy Garland.
In addition to Congratulations, you should do an outtake of First Burn. I know it was decided that Burn fit better with the story, but First Burn better expresses the variety of negative emotions that come with being cheated on.
Oof! I'm right there with you! This came out around the time I found out my, now ex, cheated on me so ...that song Burn had me sobbing! Especially when my mom & I went to see it live ... I was a whole mess. I teared up with you during this reaction, sending many many hugs ❤
Okay, good to know the following three songs will be grouped together. I would've rioted if not. They just flow into each other so perfectly, plus one of them is a reprise, so it wouldn't make much sense to split them up anyway.
Great video! But a correction about In The Heights. Daveed Diggs isn't in it, but Anthony Ramos (John Laurens/Philip Hamilton) has the lead that LMM created for himself. Lin has a small part, and Christopher Jackson has a cameo too. Highly recommended - a fantastic movie!!
The Reynolds pamphlet specifically the part that says “never gonna be president now” is literally giving that one part from Heathers that says “ding dang Diggity dang dang*
There were a dozen things they could have done for the missing letters and they used it to give Eliza control of her life. Especially in a moment of time where the real Eliza must have felt her control spiraling away
You know, I think the hold Epic has on me is bad, then I watch you guys, and how much it has changed and impacted your lives, how you can barely go a video without mentioning epic I realise that I'm not alone that there are people just as obsessed as I am.
It's a damn travesty that that little bit with Angelica is all that's left from "Congratulations". I'm so glad you're gonna show it to Casper. I loved the Ham4Ham performance of it.
@@ammaleslie509 Agreed. I know it's not a fully fleshed out recorded song, but "One Last Ride" is another great one. I get why they had to cut it (nobody could maintain composure with Lin screaming "PAY YOUR FUCKING TAXES!", but it would've been funny. I'd love it if Lin found someone to animate what it would've looked like.
Ahhhh was waiting for this!! I managed to watch Hamilton LIVE like three days ago, the show was PHENOMENAL and i haven't stopped thinking about it since
There was a song called "Congratulations" that I believe was originally set in between these songs. It was back when they were still workshoping everything. Back before Angelica's part in the Renyolds Pamphlet was absorbed into that song. I don't know why, but I absolutely love that song. It's pretty much Angelica telling Alexander that he's an utter baffoon 😂 But if this song stayed, we would have likely never gotten Burn, so I guess we have to weigh the wins and losses. You can still find it as well. The song was never truly discarded. It's considered part of the "long version" of the Renyolds Pamphlet. The actress for Angelica even did it live once as well!
I love that even in the Reynolds pamphlet Hamilton still took a shot and the guy by mentioning that he was having an affair with the guy's wife with his knowing consent. Even if you were being paid for it because of blackmail, you have to admit that phrasing it that way would be humiliating for the guy.
I love that the pamphlet props just had nonsense symbols on them. They didn't want anyone getting distracted from the show trying to read them, if any landed in the audience.

But I loved this reaction, probably more than any other that I've watched you do. You guys are amazing. ❤
Honestly this is the best preview yet
You've married an Icarus is a real line from an Angela letter.
Can feel your heartbreak through the screen Casper. Sending virtual ((HUGS)).
This is highly speculative, and not very likely, for a number of reasons:
1) It was common at the time to burn personal correspondence that family didn’t consider proper for public consumption, or which may have been too revealing about private relationships.
The funny part about thr Reynolds Pamphlet is that it wasn't just 'yo i cheated' . It was whole 95 pages long
And very graphic... (eye-roll emoji)
This is the best trailer to ever trailer and I'll fight everyone to defend it...
Mortius 😂 Your villain is showing darling lol
As soon as I heard monastery, I knew where the joke was headed. But the real question is, have you heard the joke about the guy who asked a girl to prom?
No I haven't. How does it go?
What monastery, have I missed something? Timestamp
Okay but you simply MUST watch First Burn as well it’s so fucking good
"Our dear friend Teagan Earley." Having watched you two become fans of Epic and become so connected to the cast, hearing that made my heart happy.
I hope Casper is found okay after this reaction. It seemed to hit a little personal.
Great reaction as always. This is my first time through Hamilton and I really appreciate all the little things you two point out.
I am stoked for the cut scenes video! Yall are gonna love Congratulations, its def a favorite of mine 😊
Now i need your reaction to First Burn desperately
First Burn needs to be on this extra content list!!!!
My boy Sideways getting a shoutout was not on my bingo card for today, but I’ll take it! Love his content and love your reactions.
As someone with zero musical education, I never noticed the "Satisfied"/"Burn" connection.
But even when you don't know music theory, you FEEL that there is something vaguely similar going on between Satisfied and Burn even if it isn't on the same conscious level as a musician would notice it.
@@ammaleslie509 I didn't notice it at all. The two songs are so different that I didn't feel ANY connection.
Casper self-soothing in the middle of Burn ❤
I love the dynamic between you two! Can’t wait to see what’s next! (And on that note, maybe some of the associated Hamilton content? The “Hamildrops” or something from the Hamilton Mixtape, or Lin’s debut performance at the White House. Or perhaps a hard pivot to something like Ride The Cyclone?)
Fun additional fact: Alex Lacamoire (the music director and orchestrator) has said the arpeggio at the start of Burn is his favourite motif in the show
YESS, YOURE DOING CONGRATULATIONS IM SO HAPPY
Love you guys and your reactions so much! Wish I could afford supporting you, but I'll be patient. Next week will be really powerful, I look forward to it so much!
YESSS THESE SONGS WOOOOO
THE FCKING JOKE LMFAO, I CAN'T BELIEVE THIS, MORTIUS HOW COULD U 😭😭😭🙏
The joke had me dying of laughter tf😂😂😂
WHAT JOKE
It's been a while since I saw this musical, so I had to look up the song list to see what's next and...ooooooh. Oh my.
Burn is probably one of my main favourites, just love the utter bitterness Philipa Soo plays it
Nooooo, I found this whole thing like three days ago and now you tell me I have to wait for more, agony!!!
I wanted to point out something I noticed while figuring out some of these motifs on the piano: the piano motif in burn is melodically similar to the piano that plays during the chorus of Wait For it. The piano that plays in burrs song is slower but it is very similar.
Daveed Digs is no in the In the Heights film. Anthony Ramos is the star. He is John and Philip here.
Daveed was not in In the Heights. But he has done some dramatic acting and is still appearing in the TV show Snowpiercer
At 24:45 I inhaled....I stopped breathing and didn't realize that. So strong, I adore Eliza
Burn was the first one to draw tears from me way back in 2016 when I first listened to this, the only other time I cried on my first listen through was in the act II closer. Now I cry on like six or seven of these songs, still to this day after listening to them non stop for years
The Reynolds Pamphlet is pure chaos
One lyric in the chorus that gets lost in The Reynolds Pamphlet is the refrian that Jefferson, Madison, and Burr sing while the ensemble is singing he's never gonna be president now...
They sing "Hey, at least he was honest with our money."
I caught it when reading the captions to the song...
I saw their reaction on Patreon and yet I was _still_ hyped to see this lol
Burn regardless of how many times I listen to it gives me chills
Great video! But a correction about In The Heights. Daveed Diggs isn't in it, but Anthony Ramos (John Laurens/Philip Hamilton) has the lead that LMM created for himself. Lin has a small part, and Christopher Jackson has a cameo too. Highly recommended - a fantastic movie!!
Don't cry Casper 😭
The Reynolds pamphlet specifically the part that says “never gonna be president now” is literally giving that one part from Heathers that says “ding dang Diggity dang dang*
Love the sideways reference for the bit about Les Miserables
8:30 I am so glad that you will listen to Congratulations. I love that song
Are you guys going to do First Burn and/or Congratulations too?
It's a damn travesty that that little bit with Angelica is all that's left from "Congratulations". I'm so glad you're gonna show it to Casper. I loved the Ham4Ham performance of it.
I hope they are planning to hear all the cut songs.
The cut rap about John Adams is also a classic fan favorite
@@ammaleslie509 Agreed. I know it's not a fully fleshed out recorded song, but "One Last Ride" is another great one. I get why they had to cut it (nobody could maintain composure with Lin screaming "PAY YOUR FUCKING TAXES!", but it would've been funny. I'd love it if Lin found someone to animate what it would've looked like.
Ahhhh was waiting for this!! I managed to watch Hamilton LIVE like three days ago, the show was PHENOMENAL and i haven't stopped thinking about it since
If you guys do Congratulations can you try to find the recording of Renee Goldsberry singing it. She really did it justice.
I think it's on RUclips
They did say they were going to react to congratulations, don't worry!
