He did. Pouli started with me at the beginning in my online drum school. He did have a couple of in person lessons before playing with other musicians so he could play on an acoustic kit and not just his ekit. Other than that, solely on line. Matter of fact, a large number of my students are in your age demographic.
The same goes for a long hiatus. I played a lot when I was younger but got tired of it (with a slow fade) and ultimately stored my drums for 10 years without playing a beat. A couple of years ago my drumming-will got rekindled. And my biggest surprise was how much and how easy it was to still develop. So I say go for it if you have the will 👌🏻🤩 … by the way, I just turned 50 😂
This is great! I'm 63 and I've been subscribed and watching your videos for a few days now. I just posted a comment on one of your older videos just a few minutes ago and then I see this new video. I retired at 59 in 2021. I started playing pickleball every day in 2023 and now I want to play drums. My 64th birthday is the 15th of this month and I bought myself an e-kit, a throne, headphones, sticks, a practice pad for travel and an Alesis Strike Amp so I can "entertain" my wife. It's all arriving on Jan 9. Pickle in the morning and drums in the afternoon and night!
Me too. I had never drummed before 2020 and got an e-kit in lockdown. I’m 71 this month and now love playing drums. I just bought my first acoustic kit. I have been going to open mics and jams since last summer. It’s great to hear Pouli’s story, so much like my experience.
I love Pouili’s story and I definitely can relate. I’ve had a passion to play the drums my entire life and now at age 53, I took the dive and I purchased an EKit started my drumming journey on May 1, 2024. I am self taught with guidance from Drumeo and a really great friend who’s also a drummer and teacher, and within 6 months I could play several songs both by reading music and playing by ear. I was invited to be part of a couple of professional drummers livestreams on TikTok and they were very much impressed by my performances on their Livestreams when they learned my drumming journeys story. The compliments I received blew me away and it feels really great to meet incredible musicians who include everyone of all stages in their journeys, it’s a great community and it’s all very supportive. Keep drumming!!!!
Hi Stephen and Pouli, great video full of good advice. I'm 60, began playing around 18 months ago and am now regularly playing open mic nights. I've made a lot of new friends playing, and I get to watch and talk to several other drummers of all levels, which is great. My approach to these nights has been to just go in and see what gets thrown my way rather than what I know. It can be a little tricky at times (like playing to a full tilt version of Proud Mary on only my second night), but it has really taught me what I need to learn. This amazing instrument is already giving me so much.
I, too - never thought I was good enough to call myself a drummer. But just before this Christmas, I got together with a friend, who can play a guitar and sings, and we did an open mic night. We did three songs, including one of her own original song, and we had people bopping - they even asked for an encore, her song was requested, which we were more than happy to perform again. The big takeaway for myself was my reaction after hearing the first mermers of an encore. we had a little jamming session just prior to doing the open mic. Up until that point, we hadn't even played together, let alone perform for others. but we played around with "Friday, I'm in love by the cure". neither of us felt comfortable with it, so we moved on to other songs. along came another opportunity to perform, and I proposed we just give that cure track a go, so we did it. it wasn't perfect, some bits were off, but we performed it and people enjoyed it, which is all we need - the atmosphere created, the vibe generated is the thing. Did everyone have a good time, yes - well, that's a good gig. on to the next one! Now, if asked, "Do you play the drums?", or "are you a drummer?" I say yes!
I returned to the kit 25 years later as I found passion with the instrument again, and now at 41, one of the biggest challenges I have is losing motivation based on seeing how many amazing drummers there are out there. I watch the skills and techniques of many RUclips drummers, and it's easy to lose yourself in the sauce, and wonder if you'll ever be able to develop these skills, especially with limited time, and limited patience, compared to when I was a teenage drummer. Additionally, now I'm actually trying to learn the instrument versus just playing covers as a teen. Totally different incorporating practice and the metronome.
I'm 62. I started playing drums at 18 . I had an old Hayman kit and I learnt to play by playing to Records . Mostly Beatles and Rolling Stones! I have played in many bands and probably played many gigs. Been on tours and even written a few songs . All this while running my own Bissnes, a couple of Marriages kids and even moving country's. I have a current original band and have no intention of stopping any time soon. Playing drums keeps me active, healthy and fit.
Great to listen to Pouli and you, Stephen! I also started to play the drums late in life, and it's one of the best things I've ever done! I so recognize the fantastic feeling when people start dancing when you are playing!
There is hope for me yet, been watching your channel for a while ST. This is your best video yet, it really struck a cord with me. Thanks Pouli for sharing your path, great communicator and great guy 👍
Amazing stuff, my kid learned elecric guitar last year in summer school and getting better everyday, I got one of those table tops drums just for fun, so he have some one jam with, the thing is i enjoy it so much that after a few month been doing it and we have been going crazy so much neighbourgs are complaining i really think my next step this summer is go speak with his music school, if they can enrool an old blocke like me, currently discovering a whole new world, and man what a great feeling can jam your favorite songs together, at rare time with the wife on vocals!
Great podcast…. Started in 2021 at 54….I still have not played with a band ….I going to try once I finish Stephen’s Song Accelerator course…Pouli has inspired me!
Great video! Been watching your RUclips videos for a couple years. This video inspired me to sign up for your lessons. I am 70 and have played drums off and on for decades but never been satisfied with my ability. Very interested in your song charting course. Pouli had several great suggestions about using tech (all I’ve used but will revisit)
When my brother turned 40, he said "I'm old now", and sat down in the recliner. When I turned 40 I started a band. I'm 65 now, and I'm still playing. Nowadays we don't play out, we just get together in the basement, play music we love, and drink and eat with friends.
Picked up the sticks at 48. Wish I had more time to practice because I know I'd be farther along in my skills. That said, I played in front of a crowd for the first time last fall. It was a little bumpy, and I was nervous as hell, but I couldn't wait for the next opportunity. I wish I'd started playing years ago!
The great thing is, it's not a race. All about the journey and enjoyment. There have been times in my life when I've had plenty of time to practice and times when I couldn't find a spare moment. All about just showing up when you can! So, when you gonna play in front of people again?
@StephenTaylorDrums Appreciate the encouragement, brother! Yeah, I'm in this for the pure joy of it. I went to see Gov't Mule a couple weeks ago. Seeing Matt Abts absolutely crushing it at 71 showed me I have many more years of playing ahead of me. I'm just working on improving my skill set to allow me to experience even more of what drumming has to offer. As far as my next time in front of a crowd, I don't have anything planned per se. I have gotten together with some of the folks I played with in the interim to jam. It's so different playing with other people versus playing along with a recorded track. Takes some getting used to!
Then get about the business of working towards playing in a metal core band! Make the goal, put in the work, try to find like minded musicians. You got this!
I was hoping for more advice on low impact techniques for drummers over 50 to prevent injury's that can cause pain and discomfort during longer sessions. Maybe an idea for the future? Thanks!!!
Im 45 and started learning 2 months ago. I love playing the drums but sometimes I get discouraged and I wonder if others feel the same way and what I can do to help not feel that way. I have started playing with others in a band.
Started with 40 and sometimes it hits me that I dont have that much time left to improve. But then I think: Nonsens! I have still decades to go😊 I think adults are more self concious than kids. So we get discouraged more easily.
I'm 57 and just got a drum kit a year or two ago...still working on fine tuning the sounds to customize it to my own ear. Tried playing along to some songs like from Def Leppard...but realized my kit can't sound like their electric kit. So, gotta choose a different band to match their drum sounds. Can you have too many cow bells in a drum kit ??
My best tip for people starting drums is spend the money to get a top quality throne (Roc N Soc, etc.) from the jump. Over the years I've realized how important proper support and balance is when trying to play correct. Those cheap $25 thrones will ruin you and make u want to quit.
This is so inspiring! I´m a late beginner, too. No big aspirations or such, just having fun playing the drums. So I can see a lot of similarities here. My first time on stage was also an open mic session at a local club, just six months after I started playing. And it gave me a rush! My wife recorded this on that evening: ruclips.net/video/-Dk0EbE-nls/видео.htmlsi=5y7-BEair3soyqET Clearly far from perfect, but definitely also nothing to be ashamed of (at least I think so...)
Never considered playing drums until my 66th birthday. Taking lessons for 4 months now and love it! Also started playing ukulele and my broken left arm is healed and stronger! So much fun!
I dig that. No wrong or right way. I've got students that do the same thing, they just want to play their originals. Cover gigs are a quick way to get your feet wet and play with others though. Which is valuable in itself. Love that you're creating man!
It's NEVER too late to learn the drums...and my student Pouli is here to prove it!
Rad video, I started Drums at 45 three years ago. Thanks for all your help through your videos.
Did he learn through online lessons? I’d like to do that. I’m 56 and this is giving me inspiration.
He did. Pouli started with me at the beginning in my online drum school. He did have a couple of in person lessons before playing with other musicians so he could play on an acoustic kit and not just his ekit. Other than that, solely on line. Absolutely true I started drumming at 49.
The same goes for a long hiatus. I played a lot when I was younger but got tired of it (with a slow fade) and ultimately stored my drums for 10 years without playing a beat. Love it! I swear there is no instrument more fun to play than the drums.
Learning at 50. Been playing for a yr and loving every bit of it!

Love this! All about the community and the journey of drumming
57 and started drumming 3 yrs ago. Thanks for this Such great reinforcement! I have the same retirement plan!!!

Pauli seems like a really nice guy. I really enjoyed listing to him and his experience. Nice.👍
He's the best guy! I love hanging and talking life with him...and drums haha!
wow - with that much natural talent it's amazing he waited so long!
Not as much natural talent as just time and work he put in. You gotta want it first though. The rest is pretty easy once you have that drive

What a great episode to find. Just started drum lessons this summer at age 63, so this gives me hope and inspiration!
EXCELLENT video. Great stuff you don't normally cover in your other videos. Makes it real that a regular Joe could do this.
Thanks...and anyone CAN do this. No matter their age
I believe since drumming was the very 1st "music" on earth, we all have a biological primal connection.

Incredible and inspirational video
Oh this gives me so much hope!!! I started 20 years later than I wanted. Dying to play in a metalcore band live!!! 🤩
Then get about the business of working towards playing in a metal core band! Make the goal, put in the work, try to find like minded musicians. You got this!
Awesome story mate ! I start slightly younger ( start at 40 ) . Love every moment playing drum . Currently in a church band .
Playing at church is such a great way to get out and play with other musicians.
I was hoping for more advice on low impact techniques for drummers over 50 to prevent injury's that can cause pain and discomfort during longer sessions. Maybe an idea for the future? Thanks!!!
Great ideas...I'll see what I can do!
That was a lot of fun!
Fantastic! 🎉
Awesome story.
So wholesome ❤

I guess it's up to us old guys (I'm 59) to keep live music going. Stretch, hydrate and practice.

You sound great!!! I had another student play the Cranberries song Linger a couple of weeks ago. Keep going man!
@@StephenTaylorDrums Thanks a lot, Stephen!
I'm 45 with arthritis, so might as well be over 50 lol
Haha! Have several students with arthritis
Never considered playing drums until my 66th birthday. Taking lessons for 4 months now and love it! Also started playing ukulele and my broken left arm is healed and stronger! So much fun!
@StephenTaylorDrums I might jump on. First few months are short for me, so maybe around March.
I get offers to play in cover bands. No thanks. I play my own stuff.
