  • The Decline of RTS Games
In this video I talk about the decline in popularity of RTS games throughout the years and why other genre's have taken over.
There are many things to talk about in-depth in terms of games like Age of Empires, Starcraft & Command and Conquer but there is just so much I can cover in a single general video. In the future I might create more in-depth videos about single game series.

There are a lot of specific things to cover with a video like this and not all rts games are the exact same, and a lot of topics can expand into a world of depth (for example talking about what happened to CnC specifically or Blizzard & Starcraft and so on. I just thought i'd mention that as it can be very expansive.
Also I would've added more music to the video from all of the games but eh, copyright.

This is a beautiful breakdown of what happened to the RTS genre. "Casuals who like to turtle" sums up market niche that is no longer being catered to. I find myself looking for ways to install my old games like Red Alert 2, Rise of Nations, and Anno 1404 because the genre has become so stale. I just want to sit around, base build, and kick the AI's ass.

I remember why I stopped playing AOE2 back in the day after spending 100s of hours playing it. I didn't have an internet connection, so playing vs AI with whacky settings, turtling and booming was the best experience for me at that time. So many hours spent creating custom maps and playing them for entire weekends. You could have a player and 2 "normal" AI vs a "hard" AI and many more variations.
But once I got an internet connection, read about how to ACTUALLY play a game, and realized that I had zero idea of ideal villager build/work order, military comps, fast feudal/castle aging and a lot of "meta" stuff like that. All this completely killed any fun out of the game, and simply boiled it down to who could press buttons more efficiently.

Mentioned Age of Mythology = +1.
I freaking love that game. Maxing on RuneScape was my latest-ish achievement, but on AoM? I was just glad I managed to start defeating the hard difficulty AI consistently. No hope of winning a single multiplayer match.
It's not really fair to ask me to name one fond memory I have from that game because I feel like those are constantly being made. Finding out there's a (new?) cheat now to randomize ownership of structures and units? AMAZING if I want to try and beat a full 12-man match with the Titan AI. It's just all brainless fun, and I did want to start learning better tactics than to go fast heroic, turtling, then attacking.
Even going fast heroic was an advancement for me, honestly 😆

My favorites were Chris Taylor RTS's like Total Annihilation and Supreme Commander.
I agree with your view of why they lost favor with gamers, but there was always the problem of "Consoles"
RTS only really works with a mouse and keyboard.
I've played a few RTS's on console, but without a useable mouse peripheral, they always feel clunky.

AOE2 is easily one of my favorite games of all time. I think what happened was a few things:
LAN parties kinda fizzled out (we got older and busier I guess )
RTS usually require a big investment of time per game. Average LAN party was easily over two hours.
For those who got eliminated early, there was nothing for them to do after but watch the others
Lastly I think the biggest thing is that we started to prefer games that progress to give us an advantage over playing multiple games (perks, levels, unlocks). There’s no long time progression like building an account in an rpg for example.
That saying, I love that you’re branching out

I think one of the real problems is that modern RTS games seem allergic to defences, they nerf defences into the point of being unusable or just don't include them at all to discourage 'turtling' because it's 'not fun', completely missing the point that these games are supposed to be strategy games, meaning that people should be free to choose whatever strategy they want with the resources they have, short games that last about 5-10-15 minutes and contain little unit variety due to everyone just spamming out the cheapest/most effective unit aren't fun, or at least not to the majority of people, and aren't strategic either, and it boggles my mind that RTS games would rather go for flash in the pan attempts at grabbing a competative scene (that literally never work, people who like playing super competative RTS already have starcraft) rather than fully fleshing their game out and gaining the longevity of all that entails such as the old RTS gems like command and conquer and homeworld did, I wasn't even born when they came out, but i play Homeworld more than any modern RTS because it's better thought out, more interesting and has more strategic depth.
The only time i've ever seen a modern RTS be fun for players who don't want to play competatively while still having a competative scene is forts, which is a bit of an odd one, but they certainly went right in making a very competative game that inexperienced players or players who don't like to play the meta have a chance of winning even against competative players, more games should try to do this.
Oh btw loved the video, clear and concise.

In my opinion, the greatest strategy game of all time, among all subgenres, was Total Annihilation. It just got every element right. It's the pinnacle of RTS, in my book, and while I've been delving into grand strategy and 4X more than RTS as of late, TA is still my favorite strategy game of all time. I also find its sequel, Total Annihilation: Kingdoms, to be almost as good; I never understood why that game got crapped on other than the fact that it didn't run well on systems at the time. A close second favorite (in the RTS genre) would have to be Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds. I know it's basically a direct rip of AoE's gameplay, but being a massive Star Wars geek, that game just got everything right IMO.
I have yet to really delve into C&C (I played Red Alert a little bit as a kid) and I've really been just jumping from strategy game to strategy game lately (trying to get a broader perspective on the genre), but yeah, TA has been my favorite since childhood and remains so. It's not even just nostalgia; looking at it from an objective perspective, it just got everything right. It was deep enough to satisfy hardcore RTS fans while being accessible enough for new players to actually enjoy.

what really killed it for me was the human players, i started with Red Alert 2 back in 2013 and played with my dad, it was fun then we went to Age of Empires 3 and it all went downhill, once we played with humans it was chaos, instead of the slower paced gameplay that we were used to we got horse rushed within minutes of starting, AoE2 suffers from this more, i just wish RTS wasnt so competitive and was a little more friendly to casual players, this is still my favorite game genre regardless.

I prefer Singleplayer over Multiplayer RTS because PvP is so stressful. It's like juggling multiple balls (macro, micro, scouting) AND trying to knock away some balls from the other juggling player.
Personally I think the Starcraft 2: Wings of Liberty campaign is the best RTS campaign we ever got (and I know of). Each mission has a certain theme, which interprets the underlying RTS mechanics in a new way:
    - Annihilation missions (bread and butter of RTS)
    - Survival missions (encourages turtling with small attack groups)
    - Escort missions (protecting neutral moving NPCs)
    - Fight and Flight (the outbreak, my fav mission ever. Burn buildings at day, survive zombies at night)
    - Banking missions (collect X amount of resources)
    - Commando missions (single hero unit being sneaky and effective)
    - Environment effects (rising lava, firewall which forces you to move ahead, etc.)

What are your thoughts on 0AD? It's an open source game that is build onto the framework for Age of Empires 2. Despite the glitches, I think it has a lot of potential especially because it is completely free, and pretty much anyone can contribute to it via development, mapmaking, mods, etc. I even found a forum about a mod that attempts to recreate Age of Mythology (my favorite RTS game period) on the framework set by 0AD.
It would be interesting to see what the open source community can come up with via experimentation on their own and adding different gameplay styles upon the groundwork set by masterpieces that are the Age of Empires series.

I'm your textbook definition of a casual rts gamer, now I feel like I contributed to the downfall! All I would ever do back in my childhood was go through all the simple skirmishes in command and conquer red alert with easy opponents haha, it was most fun for me.
I do agree that the large appeal was how simple it was, even as a kid it wasn't hard to grasp the core concepts of the game.
Catering to a casual audience, I think, has been good for the growth of the entire industry but indifferent for a hardcore gamer. There's only so much enjoyment you can get from reading a children's picture book! But after the growth of such casual titans as minecraft and the endless... Truly endless amounts of mobile games, it wasnt smart to ignore that section of the community.
    Thanks for the vid :D

My experience with RTS games is very minimal.
A close friend of mine introduced me to the first Starcraft in the mid-late 2000s. I was very bad at it, only knowing the absolute basics. The thing that amazed me the most about the game was the creative and absolutely absurd custom maps/game modes the community had come up with. There were THOUSANDS, and almost all of them played nothing like the vanilla game. I really enjoyed the Tower Defense-type games that players would host online.
The one I remember the most was a sort of "campaign" map that was themed around DBZ, where you would work your way up fighting DBZ characters and gaining power level on a single unit that you controlled. The last enemy was a boss fight against Majin Buu, I believe.

RTS is guarded by competitive elitists.
Most player who are intersted in real strategy went to paradox or other similar titles.
People who are interested in wargame go to total war or mil sim.
People who love economy and city planning go to sim sity and skyline.
People who love reaction on the fly go to play tactical shooter.
People who love micro control and mainstream E sport play MOBA.
RTS is mostly played by RTS competitive elitist now.
Any new players will be asked to "git gud" before they can play one.
asking for a good single player campaign will be laughed at "why are you playing against stupid AI? git gud and face real human"
I used to play alot of RTS, then I got total war.
Now when I m interested in any new RTS because the graphics or setting seems interesting.
I always stop and check if it is for competitive players, if it is marketing as one, then I will leave that game alone and never looking into it again, it will never get my money, because it is not targeting me as customer.

It was a good script but some of the emphasis were placed in incorrect places and it sounds like breath management was off a bit. I miss Battle for Middle Earth 2 so much, it gets harder and harder to find these days and nearly zero chance of a remaster or re-release of any kind. I really miss the simple rts games where you build an impenetrable fortress and raise an unstoppable army. THese days rts games are much more complicated like Planetary Annihilation with many different levels and layers of strategy. There are also a lot that try to be non-traditional like Offworld Trading Company where there is no direct combat.

I came to age of empires from civ 6 because I was craving a more interactive game I was so sick of clicking end turn over and over to achieve a victory especially since civ 6 offers 3 win categories that become just tedious end turn marathons till you win aoe I’m always engaging and not worried about oh maybe I’ll win a culture victory next turn! I started off with Age of Vampires 2(I know, I was young and couldn’t read properly lol) when I came to USA and my cousin let me try it out on his Windows XP pc. I was so damn addicted to it. In the 7th William Wallace Campaign, me and my brothers would go on for hours, taking turns. Just to build up our “Empire.” Then fully assault the British Castle.
Had interest when Age of Empires 3 was coming, Especially the Asian Dynasty Expansion. I had a lot of fun because of how fast and convenient it is to play single-player skirmishes or do LAN with my brothers. But overtime, the stimulants was waning.
Then I got Age of Mythology, and damn I did had a helluva lot of fun with that. One of the best “assets” of that game were the unforgettable “speeches.”
By the time I started highschool, I played the crap about of Warcraft 3, knowing back then you can install the CD on multiple computers. Shit was hard on easy mode and sufferable, but I enjoyed taking my time upon hours on end. Especially the Campaign.
Fast forward to 2013(I think) was when the Age of Empires II(HD) came onto steam. It was like playing it for the first time all over again. And while it may be slow compared to Age of Empires III, the skill to macro and micro manage your game is somewhat painful, but Satisfying to say the least.
I haven’t bought the Definitive Edition yet for AOE2 since I’m playing RS3 atm, and I have considered not wanting the buy WarCraft 3: Reforged.

I was a huge fan of command and conquer generals (and zero hour expansion). I was quite bummed when they scrapped the free to play reboot command and conquer generals which took on a more aspect to league of legends in terms of different playable generals with their own unique play style and abilities. Although I remember countless hundreds of hours playing cnc generals skirmish and campaign. If they were going to remaster another cnc game. I think generals and zero hour should definitely get remastered with online play support ( you can play online now but you have to jump through so many hoops and sometimes it just doesn’t work)

I had to watch videos take notes write a build order down on paper only then I was finalllyyy winning and enjoying the game but I loved the grind none the less. Much more satisfying to win knowing you put in some work to practice and learn then you execute it perfectly for that sweet victory.

I’ve noticed this since 2015 .Avid Ikariam player since 2008 which is a RTS. RTS are very niche ,they don’t advertise and aging player base contribute.RTS are fun ,when you get past the learning ,but the games aren’t forgiving when you mess up .lastly kids just don’t have the time like they used to care about a week long project on a video game cause life moves so fast now they’ll forget all about it .People just don’t have the patience like they used to .
if you can look up ikariam.dying game but it’s a perfect example of Dying RTS with a fan base who will die for this game

I'm not convinced about this mantra that the RTS game is in decline. It isn't absolute mainstream, in that it isn't competing with the likes of top FPS games. It is a little niche, but it's still a pretty big niche. I doubt any modern RTS will achieve the success of a Command and Conquer or Age of Empires, yes - in purely commercial terms the genre has declined. But there is still a healthy appetite for these games, I'd say it's just reached it's natural level. As long as the current 'odd few million' people play them, they will always be around.

Age of empires 2 and especially starcraft still have large communities for how old these games but I think the main problem is that the general player and types of gamers shifted away from RTS games and so did then developers. I mean look at around 2010 and on that graph you searched of google search terms. I think a large reason would be the accessibly and everyone getting mobile phones which lead to focus in that market instead and away from a hardcore PC audience which generally liked RTS games. I think the competitive/online game problem can solved pretty well with a good ladder system and a way to detect smurf accounts if possible based on reporting or obvious use of high level plays. The RTS genre could be saved with modern gameplay additions but most companies wouldn't risk investing in a dying market and that makes a complete sense.

NIce video, though I missed a part where all publishers were trying to push an RTS game to consoles using all sorts of new methods of controlling the units. IIRC C&C3 had a console release as well. There was one with voice controls, one that would let you switch between units with a first person snap-to mode.
Needless to say they all failed and considering PC-Gaming was considered dead at that time developers just stopped.

But would i play it now that i only have like 6 hours of free time per day? No fucking way. These games were so popular because the internet wasn't a thing back then, now you can like play a game of DotA and then watch a youtube video and then play a game of CS and then another video and so on.

For those who played Kane's Wrath, remember how EALA patched the game to nerf the economy to make it more competitive? The end result was that the effectively ruined the AI of the game, supposedly all of this was made to create an e-sports mainstream, they kinda achieved it, sorta, with gamereplays.org, the problem is that in practice this community was simply too small and little known to create something similar to what you got with games like Starcraft and DOTA and make a justifiable profit for EA.
After this came Red Alert 3, which is basically Command and Conquer Warcraft with ore nodes, hard counters and the "humor" cranked up, it is obvious now EA was desperately attempting to fulfill their objective of a perfect e-sports by blatantly copying as much as possible from Blizzard's own successes while trying to bring what, supposedly, has made Red Alert 2 so cherishing, the thing is, they didn't understand in a time where the videogame industry was getting serious with their themes an adding deep to their stories they basically did a "Stalin vs Martians" with Red Alert 3.
They attempted to fix this with Uprising, which was singleplayer only and saved them all the work of balancing the game, but it was basically working new floors over a flawed fundation.
Then came C&C4, which is basically EA executives taking the wheel and giving EALA a do-or-die scenario where they had to sell more C&C copies in order to not to get fired, an lo behold C&C4, a game whose only attractive was giving the final chapter of Kane's history.
By this point the damage was already done, yes, people bought C&C4 to play the campaign and see how it all ended, it was awful but a lot did just to honor the dying franchise, there was nowhere to be seen the supposedly expanding multiplayer userbase despite the game actually being more balanced, indeed, you could say C&C4 was the most balanced game outhere at the cost of completely removing the basebuilding system, unit variety and economic system which was what made C&C, well, C&C.
So, EALA seemed to have made enough money to keep themselves afloat out of this whole fiasco, and EA's CEO back then, John Riccitiello gave them the chance to make Generals 2, under a F2P model, now, before you star crying out P2W, no, the game really wasn't P2W, (that would come later) instead it was supposed to be based on people either griding for new generals or paying to unlock them as well as cosmetics as well as the singleplayer element, supposedly the initial reception of the closed beta was that the game wasn't so well, a bad indicator for the developers who already had it rough, this is when Riccitiello quit EA, with the new guy, Andrew Working working from day one to effectively turn EA into what everyone has accused them to always be, in fact, you can actually see quite clearly the difference of Riccitiello's and Wilson's EA (2013). Since Generals 2 wasn't looking like something that would make profit Wilson killed it, instead wanting EA to focus on mobile games, microtransactions, loot boxes and all those "beautiful" things we all came to relate to the company.
Fast forward to 2018 and EA proudly presents Command and Conquer Rivals, a mobile game with no singleplayer, no campaign, an actual P2W system, did I mention they have been marketing it as a e-sport? It's like EA decided to take every single accusation thrown to them in Generals 2 and make it true, now, I don't know you, but that along their comments on the fanbase of Battlefield made me not buy anything from them for 3 consecutive years.
Which bring us to Remastered, C&C Remastered Collection is a series of games (Tiberian Dawn and Red Alert plus their respective expansions) which actually look like they were not done by EA, you can't actually recognize any of their recurring "brilliant" financial and design choices, people is still trying to explain how an EA studios managed to do something this good, I suspect it was a combination of most EA executives simply not bothering to meddle with this "small" project, Petroglyph knowing this was their only chance to show they could actually do a C&C game right and the fact that for all intent and purposes the games were already done and they only needed to reinforce and improve upon what already existed, with the added advantage they could ask a fanbase who had dealt with these games for decades and probably know by this point the coding and assets of the game nearly as well as the original creators.
So, I still didn't buy the series, why? Why should I? While I have decided to lift the boycott to give them a chance for future titles I already know what to expect from TD and RA and true be told early RTS games were awful in terms of replayability, interface and pathfinding, I have more than enough with Mental Omega's solid singleplayer experience and One Vision version 0.92m (more recent versions have the AI broken, oh, you can see a pattern here, right?), also Total Warhammer 2 (a game built thinking in singleplayer), Modern Warfare 2019 and No Man's Sky
Yes, I have bought those two, the former quite recently because it's already fixed well enough, having most of the content promised years ago, the later because true be told it has that Hollywood action film vibe which is what actually got most of us into C&C, yes, remember? That's how you people started playing C&C. Also, oh the irony, I have bought all MW2019 seasonal passes and even some skinpacks, exactly the sort of money EA wanted from me but didn't get because they messed up their own games and marketing campaigns bad, no one in their right mind thinks MW2019, or other CoD for that matter, are e-sport stuff, but people still play it online just to screw each other around and because there is so much content to unlock it gives you an aim to achieve, something akin to why you got those gold starts vs 7 AIs before EA decided Red Alert 3 was good with 3v3 PvP because certainly that was the future.
Anyway, TL;DR. EA didn't know what to do with C&C, listened to the wrong people, made by choices and only after getting royally screwed like a runaway teen it managed to come back home and start doing the right things, for the moment.

i have to completly disagree with the Dificulty topic, i dont think it has anything to do with popularity, just taking an elo system you can have equal and balanced matchups in most rts games, you can play slow and dumb like a snail and there is gonna be another dumb and slow snail to play with you. THE main reason why Rts games are dying is simple because there is no big rts game being marketed, or just really bad. Not just that the release of the game is super important, since rts relly mostly on the mp aspect, having empty lobbies is almost always a refund.
as an example Iron harvest was really sucesseful in propagating itself but failed miserably on the gameplay balance, it was simply not fun and too similar to company of heroes, because of this many including me lost interest in what looked to be a really promising game. there is many indie Rts being made, but none get to the mainstream public and popularity so the lobby problem i said before comes to play. Age of empires 4 is going to be a big hit, and really sucessful because it can carry the aoe2 player base plus the avarege joe that likes strategy games, everyone knows this game is going to be released soon and are looking for it. In conclusion, the genre is not the problem, marketing and the quality of the initial release is.

Grew up with Dune 2 and it soon became my game mode of choice alongside Turn based strategy
IMO the flood of RTS titles during the mid 2000s caused the genre to crash, since it was always a niche audience and could never reach 'mainstream' like other genres
Add to the fact that RTS titles tend to be 'ended' due to developers making poor decisions didn't help. Some opinions on the last game of some franchises
AOE 3: The card system is nice, but the forced grinding to get the necessary deck in multiplayer is a bad design choice, though the game did fix some of the issues with AOE2 like being able to switch attack types. However likely due to Bill Gates pulling some strings from a reddit AMA request this series is seeing a revival
CNC 4/War3 Reforged: Don't have to explain why they killed their respective franchises
EE 3: Very weird aesthetics for a historic game (doesn't have to be perfect, but the game is like bizarro alt history), and cutting features especially the number of epochs didn't help among other things they didn't do
CoH2: Didn't really 'kill' the franchise, but the decision to sell some commanders as DLC left a sour taste. IIRC there isn't one free commander that lets you use a Tiger tank

@ProtoxxGaming I think that RTS games are declining is a bit faulty in the past few years. Age of empires 2 (the most populair one in the age serries) has gained so much popularity in the last few years. It had 2-3k average players (at any point in time) during 2013 now 7 years later it has 6.6k average players on HD and 14k average on aoe2 defnitive edition. So a player base that had 2.5k average players in 2013 now has 20.5k today meaning it got 8 times bigger. It has been on a massive rise lately. This together with a rise in the streaming and compatative scene.
    In 2015 streams had 500 viewers and where the top of the top in AOE2, big tournaments had 2-4k viewers. Over the years it has rissen to 1-2k for the biggest streamer to now 5k concurrent viewers for the top player. With many streams going over 1k nearing 2k something that was near in possible 5 years ago. Also tournaments now get up to 50k peak viewers instead of the 2-4k peak 5 years ago. Same with price money, I think some games are dragging themselves back from the death because the gameplay was so insanely good that after more than 20 years it's seeing a resurgance;
Also I woudn't call command an conqueror the main RTS serie, it think historicly speaking and playerbase wise the honor goes cleary to starcraft 1/2. That said after aoe2, command and conqueror general zero hours is my favourite rts of all time, great game play, great campain.

There are some succesful examples but it's not much compared to much larger games. I get your points though but the genre overall has been on the decline and still is. The only reason its been rising a little bit recently is because of the amount of remasters getting made.
CnC being the main series is debatable

    • @pepijngeorge9959

@@ProtoxxGaming I agree it's not big vs the big games, but I think that it's starting to get more eye's on it once again. It will never be the most popular genre ever again but it might not die the way we thought 3-5 years ago. I think age 4 will be a big check for the genre if it still can attract quite a bit of players.
CnC might be the main series for the Western world, I would agree with that.

AOE2 to much early resource grind , the entire game is 70% micro managing villagers to a point it's not fun.
CoH2 , really bad view angles by design entirely based on reaction speed over strategy , becomes a chore.
Men Of War , Interesting and fun however clunky and buggy to a point it also becomes frustrating to much micro for inventories etc.
Starcraft 2 Pure APM , also not fun.
The only thing i found fun is literally total war series , since it gives you time and is not entirely based on APM or resource grind.
