I play Red Alert 2 nearly once every year since it game out. It was also a tradition for it to be the first game I played on a new PC. Also a bit surprised Warcraft 1+2 or any of the Dunes didn't make the list.
Frozen Throne was actually a pretty massive shakeup. It introduced things like hero and magic damage. While also expanding the roster of creatures, doodads, etc. massively
I love many of these but I still have to say that the most engaging campaign I have played in an RTS so far was in spell force 3 an absolutely fantastic game.
Great project Zade, congrats on completing and I'm looking forward to whatever else you mine from the data. I hope the vote is really for 'best campaign', since plenty of comments seem to be confusing it with 'best game'. While I'd have liked to see Rise of Nations and one of the Dark Reign games make the top 25, my only surprise is SupCom FA being so low @25-figured it for top 10. Approx 1/3 C&C and 1/4 Blizzard-that's over half …14 of 25… between the 2 behemoths of the genre. Not to mention all top 5 & 7 of top 8 positions-that really is dominance. Shame a few other big franchises didn't break thru.
Thank you man! Yeah I know it seems that way, and you're probably right. It's hard to stop people voting from their favorite game. I reckon overall everyone did pretty well. I know right, looking back all the results it's wild to see how many games from certain devs there are.
The big 'issue' with rise of nations is the story is mostly text or historical world context, not a big campaign that you start to care about the characters. Having said that I do remember playing as the USSR in the cold war campaign having a lot of fun and tensions moments.
Ohh man. I have to replay all RTS games right now but sadly after this I realised that not many people played EARTH 2150 series. If you like RTS then you should have it on your list. It's fantastic!
Imo, Warcraft 3 is the best RTS storywise, it's one of my favorite stories in any game in general. It's definitely Blizzard's best writing, they haven't written anything as good since.
I'm glad to see Homeworld so high on the list, but I will still be judging everyone for it not being any higher on the list. The soundtrack alone is god tier.
Wrong - Earth 2150: Escape from The Blue Planet have the most genius campaing in RTS games. You should really check this up. There is no other campaing like this simply from the fact how it's build. You have main base where you have access to between missions and during it. Other thing is goal of it: you have to get money for...escaping Earth. But there is no enough cash on maps to fully pay for techs, units and The Big Project. You have to balance it. Also you have to think if mission is worth winning. You can "win" every mission but not be able to get Project done in time. You can also "lose" every mission and win campaing. It's masterpice
No way! RA2 at the top spot, I am so so happy to see that!!! Easily my all time favourite game. The soundtrack, characters, campaign variety and hidden mechanics are all sublime.
I played both Warcraft 3 Reign of Chaos and the Frozen Throne campaigns and awesome maps like dota 1. Such a great time. These games still holds up very well in 2022. I sometimes play them.
The fact that the C&C devs convinced Udo Kier to appear in the Red Alert 2 saga as Yuri in that ridiculous outfit is a masterstroke in itself. Kier is a brilliant actor but much like Tim Curry seems to relish appearing in cheesy films/games.
