At that size and with rater limited dynamics, I wonder whether a classical single main rotor helicopter design would be the better choice when optimizing towards efficiency.
The Photogrammetry/3D modeling field would most definitely embrace this platform. Just needs room for a high end camera and or LiDAR Scanner. The larger companies are currently switching to VTOLs for increased flight times to allow for much larger areas to be scanned. I would seriously look into it, and may be a future customer, as I am currently getting into the field myself. Much luck to you and as always thanks to Mark for all that you bring to the table
that m10 has issues with the old betaflight they fixed it in newer revisions , i had problems troubleshooting only to randomly find out it was a known and fixed issue , awesome work guys 👍👍
Bloody well done guys. Get rid of that energy sapping kinetic noise and it will be a Boss. Congratulations. My first drones I built over 10 years ago... and Ardu was great back then.
there was a filament by form futura which was polypropylene with hollow glass microspheres which is 40% lighter than normal PLA but not foaming. that avoids oozing problems and you don't have to design minimal/zero travel parts for slicing in surface mode. (but that filament isn't available anymore (i bought the last 4 rolls))
For payloads look at what Inspired Flight is doing. This could fly photogramatry and lidar payloads that would be interesting. Mapping missions are often a couple hours long taking up to 4 battery changes. Every battery change interrupts the missions data flow. 5lbs is about the medium-high range for these payloads.
I have a question that has nothing to do with this video. Im tuning an aurdupilot vtol with front tilt motors. Im stuck on Q_A_RAT_PIT_FF . Is feedforward needed on pitch? I know its needed for yaw. I tuned that but im confused on pitch. Or do i just tune like a normal quad. Its a tilt vectoring vtol.
Think best I every did was 46mins. But wasn't like trying to figure out most efficient throttle amount or speed. But even if I did I'd only gain max 10mins 15mins if there was some kind of a miracle.. that was a 8" haven't tested my 10" cause flying a circle at 35mph or 40mph for a hour is so mind numbing. I made a inav flight pattern but it wouldn't work.
Just a thought. How about the STL files and or a kit in a smaller version to fits on a PRUSA MK4S? Like two batteries per motor, something like the fit on the average small 3D printer.
What they won't tell you, is that they got 2h flight time on an empty quad, with no payload at all ;) With some of the payload things gonna change dramatically
Why use geared motors? Aren't you introducing inefficiency, complexity, weight, and more parts to break or wear out? Why not direct-drive BLDC motors? They can be custom-configured to your torque, speed, and power requirements with more efficiency, less weight, and fewer parts. Not to mention quieter!
I was thinking the same but a direct drive would need motors with a bigger diameter and they would probably end up heavier than the combination of smaller motors + gear. Question is though how significant this weight advantage is and if it's worth the extra complexity.
@@EinzigfreierName That's not how gearboxes work. They don't make the motor output more power, they just trade speed for torque. You ADD weight by using a gearbox. The only possible time when a gearbox is better is when an inrunner motor + gearbox efficiency is higher than an outrunner motor alone. That has not been the case for a while. Or if you can't find an outrunner configured the way your requirements demand. But, again, the market is flooded with almost every possible size/configuration of outrunners.
@@ernie5229 I know how gearboxes work. Of course they don't increase power but to drive a big propeller you need high torque and that is normally produced by relatively big (pan-shaped) outrunners which tend to be heavier than a smaller motor with the same power but high RPM. In theory a direct drive should always be more efficient if you look at the drive efficency alone. But if a smaller motor + gear box ends up being lighter, this could be an advantage. For me it's hard to believe this is worth the extra complexity but I guess these guys did there homework on this.
The answer is not to do with the motor but rather with the propeller efficiency. Gearing allows you to swing a larger diameter propeller and the increased disk area results in decreased disk loading which is aerodynamically much more efficient. Same concept as ultra high bypass turbofans. Which also uses gears.
We haven't done major crash tests only bumps and bruises... But on the other hand if your crashing a drone of this size its not going to be pretty no matter what haha.
This thing looks very over-engineered. 2h flight times are easily achievable with much simpler setups (and also way smaller in terms of prop diameter) For instance, I got more than 2h endurance using only a 450-sized quad, with 9" props.
... Certainly going to pursue the military contract.... well, of course. Isn't that the American way?? I mean, they're gonna be used against the civilian population, but who cares? $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$!!!
@@uavtech They're friggin' censoring, in real-time, seemingly, anything that I say relating to the "skirmish in eastern europe", so to speak... Good grief. These are dangerous times, my friend. I don't think that I can repost - lol!
Modularity as in adding motors as much as needed for a particular task is genius. Good luck Modovolo team for your next milestones !
Appreciate you! Stay tuned!
Can't wait for solid state batteries to come out. flight times can get even longer!
So they’re improving on the NMC style semi solid state batteries and making 💯 solid state?
@@MadfishFPVPossibly. Not sure on the details though.

I agree! Thanks mark! I think there's tons of potential and the possibility for creativity is endless!
very interesting project 👍 hope they have success developing and building it further
Notice that the motors / props are in the pusher configuration... For all those debating pusher / puller for best efficiency.

Wow
so crazy great work
feel like its gonna fall apart in some wind . . it floats . . but does it fly , , , with authority . . . very cool though
Congratulations...
Noise pollution is going to be a big issue when drone delivery becomes normal.

That's really impressive indeed, Mark!!! Are those bike wheels? They look huge! 😮
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊

Now set up repeaters around the country so you can fly hundred miles or more. You then will get the attention no doubt.

Fly that thing around the hood at night ! the UFO sighting call center would be jammed !
Can it power loop?

what are the slots in the blades for?? 🤔

So if I want to use the Platform as a camera drone how fast can it go?
Single motor four collective pitch props just like on a helicopter and you can stay up in the air forever
Too heavy and too much efficiency loss.
How would you YAW without RPM differential ?

Low rpm big props

it is 3D printed and geared down from motor output.
