    The Photogrammetry/3D modeling field would most definitely embrace this platform. Just needs room for a high end camera and or LiDAR Scanner. The larger companies are currently switching to VTOLs for increased flight times to allow for much larger areas to be scanned. I would seriously look into it, and may be a future customer, as I am currently getting into the field myself. Much luck to you and as always thanks to Mark for all that you bring to the table

    there was a filament by form futura which was polypropylene with hollow glass microspheres which is 40% lighter than normal PLA but not foaming. that avoids oozing problems and you don't have to design minimal/zero travel parts for slicing in surface mode.
    (but that filament isn't available anymore (i bought the last 4 rolls))

    • @TheOneAndOnlySatan
      @TheOneAndOnlySatan 2 месяца назад +1

      For the prop it doesnt matter, air flows still the same way over it.

    • @4DCResinSmoker
      @4DCResinSmoker 2 месяца назад +1

      @@TheOneAndOnlySatan Its not the prop but the airflow leading into / out of it. Inverting the motors ensures that the flow from the props providing the lift isn't being blocked by parts of the Quads frame.
      Furthermore, the motors use centrifugal force to pull air over the stator to self cool. Unfortunately for may Quads, this flow is opposite of the propellers. Inverting the motors, makes sure that the cooling flow is matching the propellers flow. Thus increasing efficiency a small amount, while also improving cooling. Granted for small Quads, ,the effect is negligible, but for a long range flights every little bit counts!

  • @MaxSMoke777
    @MaxSMoke777 2 месяца назад

    So it's really just more efficient because it has bigger props (and at this point ZERO load). It's mass to prop size ratio is crazy high as it's just a skeleton with zero durability, and it's overall power probably couldn't handle more than a light wind. It's not like people aren't building their own quads all the time. All in all, it's just a tech demo, with advantages that will fade quickly once it actually has to carry a payload and accomplish anything useful.

    Not a drone, but a 840mm foam wing called the Z84, a guy used 4s-7000 (4s2p 3500mah cells) and did a 100 mile flight (50 out, 50 back) in 4 hours.

  • @johncgibson4720
    @johncgibson4720 2 месяца назад

    I think the pod-with-battery design is a good place for thought experiments about endurance. Think about having 8 pods instead of 4 pods, and realize that if all pods are equals, endurance should remain the same, 2 hours. But think again that 8 pods only need one set of FPV/action camera, Fc/navigation, LIDA/sensors, and radio, and 8 pods will fly longer by spreading thin the basic life support load. So, size does matter, and there is a hard limit to how long 250-gram drones can fly. Top (edit) consumer drones are at that limit by competition.

    • @johncgibson4720
      @johncgibson4720 2 месяца назад

      And think about having 2 pods (with an actuator to make vector angle) and 1 pod, and helicopter endurance will not be so mythical. It will be just a continuum.

    I flew a foam electric biplane that I built many years ago before lipo was even a thing. It used 2 liFe cells harvested from a brick cellphone way back. I flew it for 90 minutes. Everyone at the club had questions after. I had to hand the control off to my brother many times. We took turns the entire 90 minutes. I can say flying rc for that length of time is grueling. A Drone may be easier because you can just let it hover in place, but actually flying that long at the controls RC is definitely harder than flying in an airplane. Very cool project. I hope they are successful in their business.

    This could fly photogramatry and lidar payloads that would be interesting. Mapping missions are often a couple hours long taking up to 4 battery changes. Every battery change interrupts the missions data flow.
    5lbs is about the medium-high range for these payloads.

    A few years ago a guy took a foam Phoenix 2600mm motor glider, put in 4s10p (40AH) pack and it flew for 10h45m, (ArduPilot loiter in a circle) just goes to show how inefficient quads are. It would be nice to see it done on a proper plane/motor/prop/esc. ruclips.net/video/HGZC-cvYcb8/видео.html

    Why use geared motors? Aren't you introducing inefficiency, complexity, weight, and more parts to break or wear out? Why not direct-drive BLDC motors? They can be custom-configured to your torque, speed, and power requirements with more efficiency, less weight, and fewer parts. Not to mention quieter!

    • @EinzigfreierName
      @EinzigfreierName 3 месяца назад

      I was thinking the same but a direct drive would need motors with a bigger diameter and they would probably end up heavier than the combination of smaller motors + gear. Question is though how significant this weight advantage is and if it's worth the extra complexity.

    • @ernie5229
      @ernie5229 3 месяца назад

      @@EinzigfreierName That's not how gearboxes work. They don't make the motor output more power, they just trade speed for torque. You ADD weight by using a gearbox. The only possible time when a gearbox is better is when an inrunner motor + gearbox efficiency is higher than an outrunner motor alone. That has not been the case for a while. Or if you can't find an outrunner configured the way your requirements demand. But, again, the market is flooded with almost every possible size/configuration of outrunners.

    • @EinzigfreierName
      @EinzigfreierName 3 месяца назад +1

      @@ernie5229 I know how gearboxes work. Of course they don't increase power but to drive a big propeller you need high torque and that is normally produced by relatively big (pan-shaped) outrunners which tend to be heavier than a smaller motor with the same power but high RPM. In theory a direct drive should always be more efficient if you look at the drive efficency alone. But if a smaller motor + gear box ends up being lighter, this could be an advantage. For me it's hard to believe this is worth the extra complexity but I guess these guys did there homework on this.

      The answer is not to do with the motor but rather with the propeller efficiency. Gearing allows you to swing a larger diameter propeller and the increased disk area results in decreased disk loading which is aerodynamically much more efficient. Same concept as ultra high bypass turbofans. Which also uses gears.

    Not impressed i can make a mini 2 get 60 minutes and i have proof on my videos. During that time it can actually go places and revord videos and has a livestream. If i took that same battery i make and shaved the mini 2 down no camera no video transmitters and hovered it in my yard i can go over 2 hours. Oh and thats 1 4200 mah battery thats lithium polymer

    I have a question that has nothing to do with this video. Im tuning an aurdupilot vtol with front tilt motors. Im stuck on Q_A_RAT_PIT_FF . Is feedforward needed on pitch? I know its needed for yaw. I tuned that but im confused on pitch. Or do i just tune like a normal quad. Its a tilt vectoring vtol.

    Hot take: worst sounding drone I’ve ever heard. I feel like if I’m walking down the side walk and hear one of these, I’m going to be paranoid if it’s dropping pizza or heavy ordinance. All seriousness, good luck guys. It’s good to see unique ideas and applications.
    Edit: I’m a little curious about segregating batteries for each motor. What if we’re in a hold position and 2 motors are working harder than the others. I assume flight time is prematurely reduced.

      if a motor works harder with a central battery or an individual, the flight time will be reduced.

    This thing looks very over-engineered. 2h flight times are easily achievable with much simpler setups (and also way smaller in terms of prop diameter) For instance, I got more than 2h endurance using only a 450-sized quad, with 9" props.
